- The inagural NBA In-Season Tournament is officially in the books. The Los Angeles Lakers took home the very first NBA Cup and the general consensus from fans is the the In-Season Tournament was a success, a sentiment that we share. That being said we feel the the In-Season Tournament still has a lot of unrealized potential. The NBA In-Season Tournament was good... But it can be better.

The tourney should definitely start the same time but end on Christmas Day when everyone is watching already that’s just more incentive.
Then ball picks up fr in January then right into the all star game and then big bang boom The playoffs are there before u know it
My thoughts on how to make the In-Season Tournament a bit better (edit: I initially wrote this like 5 months ago, so the parts that I added in the later edits will be marked):
1) rename it to "In-Season Cup"
2) home-and-away aggregate score format for the knockout games (*in hindsight, maybe not the best idea)
3) play the final in bigger stadiums like SoFi Stadium (maybe not within 5 years
*4) rotating host venue based on division (e.g. 2024 final is hosted by one of the venues in cities that have teams in, say the Central Division, let cities like Indiana, Chicago or Milwaukee bid for the hosting rights; then in 2025 maybe the Pacific Division cities can bid to host, and so on)

I personally am fine with the neutral site part. I think if the NBA expands to Vegas though that could be an issue. Maybe they could run it like the All-Star break and have the city announced ahead of time and at least get packages for fans of the qualifying teams to get out there.
Also making it a home and away game against each team in your pool would 100% improve the tournament.
Yes, neutral site is awesome. It doesn’t provide any home court advantage and i think they could switch to non nba cities every year. Seattle, Vancouver, Montreal, Mexico City, Baltimore, Jacksonville, Raleigh, nashville… there are so many cities who would love to host it to get some nba action in their cities who lack a franchise.
I think the In-Season Tournament is one of the NBA's best ideas so far and I agree with a lot of your suggestions here. Especially about the crowds. Man that Las Vegas arena was DEAD.

I agree with the IST finals should switch cities every year similar to the All-Star Game. This year Vegas, next year Montreal the year after Jacksonville etc. But all locations should be neutral sites so the no home court aspect is preserved.
Also maybe Extending the tournament to the end of December or beginning of January would be interesting if possible.
AND PLEASE GIVE FANS T SHIRTS AND TOWELS THAT WOULD BE AMAZING.
Definitely agree with some of y'all's ideas. Even if it's not the "NBA Cup", there should be at few more group games. That and maybe give away ticket packages for fans. I agree with Roxie Roll that maybe they should announce the city beforehand, and have giveaways for the fans. Also, maybe take some notes from how the WNBA does the Commissioner's Cup. Especially having wins result in donations for charities in the local area. Overall, the In-Season Tournament was a good foundation, now they just gotta build on it and expand it more.

I liked the Fact that the 50k was motivation for the players to play harder. If Anthony Davis can play the way he played in the In season Tournament in the playoffs, the Lakers are gonna be a tough team to beat. 💯

The courts have to go. They’re so bright they completely mess with the TV viewing.
I 100% think and I’m glad they modelled this basically after football cups. The FA cup or Copa de Rey. Are amazing for smaller market teams, or smaller teams to get a chance at winning something and getting a prize of money with it.
This happens often in football where a random team in the 3rd division somehow gets to the semi final or even final and they usually lose, but they get a huge sum of money they wouldn’t have gotten for years. And I think the nba could up the prize money even more and more teams would try, especially similar teams to the pacers. Also I think they should maybe play more games? Ending it in December is a good idea, but it definitely felt short, and a little rush although for a first time tournament it was pretty good.
If u think bout it MJ would never leave Vegas with 500K lol. But he would definitely compete for this cause he’s a competitor and it’s big money back then even more.

In terms of location for the final game, could've had the team with the higher ppg given home court for the final. Encourages more offense from teams. Also as an english person, its not an FA cup/ league cup comp but it defo added more intrest to the games over here i think. Credit the NBA and of course Silver for doing it, massive success
I think instead of the in-season tournament being a lot longer (I think 4-7 games per team is fine) I want to see multiple In-season tournaments. Imagine you have the NBA Cup in november / december, then another tournament with the finals at All-Star Weekend or something. It would give another event to fill the dead space of the NBA season (And make all-star weekend fun again)

A video suggestion: A franchise I wanna see you guys cover are the Pacers. Since the IST and seeing that Pacers team reach the finals, I got to thinking about all the great Pacers teams that could have won a title, but couldn’t because they had the bad luck of running into Jordan and the Bulls, Shaq and Kobe, and Lebron with the Heat and Cavs.
To me this was the best thing Adam introduced even more than the play in and has WAY more potential than the play in.
Think about all the possibilities you can do like divisional group one home one away

i think if they rotate the arena around every year to every nba stadium that would be cool. Kinda like how they do it with the superbowl. One year its Chase center and then the next its like Moda Center etc
I think they should definitely expand to 32 teams and set up the group stages very similar to soccer like in UEFA and the World Cup. Have at least 8 from each conference to qualify and do it maybe at the start of January that way they can get more fans from different cities to come rather than have been all dominated by one home crowd like the Lakers. Overall this was a good experience and I hope it improves to be more than just "another cup".

My whole take on this is this could be a good "first test" for teams to see who could possibly contribute in the playoffs. Hey if one of my guys didn't show up for this tournament - what's to say that the same won't happen in the playoffs?

What if every team played 6 games. Like the heat plays the pacers at home vice versa with every team in their division. The team at the top of the division gets home unless the other teams from the other divisions have a higher statistical advantage. Then once the actual tournament starts every team plays on game to move on. Honestly if the finale is on Christmas Day it would probably put in more numbers if that’s a risk Adam sliver is willing to take to make this tournament better.

Firstly mix the groups don't make it east and west it'll just be like the playoffs if you mix the groups then you'll get matchups we aren't used to seeing and it'll differentiate the tournament

I enjoyed the IST. They could make pool play longer maybe 8 games, possibly have the #1 seed host the final & push the IST back a little so the final is right before AS break. Outside of that I wouldn't change anything. I watched at least one game from every teams pool play not once did I care about the fans not being hype enough. Not every fan base is gonna be hype

Yes it was good, but it was just the first year. It could also be that a lot of the buzz around it was simply due to the novelty of the idea.
I don't think there should be too many drastic changes. Play it another year, and if it still has the same hype then you can start to implement any big changes.

Just a thought. Instead of doing the In-Season Tournament Semi and Final every year in Vegas why not make it a revolving or traveling thing. Like next season's should be in Seattle, then the following in Vancouver or Paris. Idk could be a great way to spotlight the game and grow the international presence.
Went to Celtics first In season tournament game vs Nets and they gave everyone in the Garden a In season tournament t shirt. Dope as hell

I think that the reward needs to be better like, for being the champions you get like a top 10 pick for the draft guranteed or my favourite getting a guranteed spot in the playoffs being the 8th seed if you make the finals. The reward is great for the players but people like lebron and kd dont really care about the money, give them a better reason to really care about it.
Hopefully they can have more Simple courts. Just put the NBA cup in the middle of the Floor or something and have some Logos or something on the floor to indicate it's the tourney. Cause these Colored courts are an OFFENSE to the human eye.

Yea I mean you guys kinda touched on it but really the only reason the finals were in Vegas was bc they wanted to see what it would be like if they were to expand and have a team there. And sadly which you can tell with the raiders, it will make them money but no one would care ab the team that lives in Vegas. Also it's a sort of neutral spot(not as much bc LA was playing) but still technically neutral

Honestly it was hideous courts gave me headaches because of the pixels and color on tvs also theirs so many elements that went along with it To make it better, why not have a tournament like champions league let the teams of the world compete, this in season tournament they should of allowed the g leauge teams participate.. at least make it more interesting. But we all know it was a tournament for bron bron I seen things that questioned how much more the NBA is like the NFL 😂
The IST also added single elimination games that some of these NCAA fans wanted to see in the NBA

I am a big proponent of fewer games for elimination rounds. So, what I would do:
1) yeah, in the "group stage", one away and one home game between the division teams. NBA needs to brew local rivalries.
2) In the elimination games, akmalbasyhaazis gave a good suggestion: 1 game home, 1 game away. If both teams win one game each, the one with best aggregate score takes it. This would incentivize teams to be 100% on both ends of the court.
3) I would implement the 2nd point on the FINALS too. I hate that European's Champions League and South American's Libertadores both have just one game, it does take away from the feeling of watching your team. BUT, yeah, I know how exciting one games are (my team just won the Libertadores).
4) The biggest one: the winner will go to the playoff. Maybe, the winner gets the 8th seed position, but can fight for a better one during the season.
All of these would need testing, OBVIOUSLY.
Im have not as much knowledge to the copa libertadores final like you do, but isn’t it that when the final ends with a draw that there is a second match. Atleast the one I watched was like this, the super Clasico in 2018.
@@melihoezcan Not, the Copa Libertadores is just like Champions League: in case of a draw during regular time, there will be prorrogation of the game (30 minutes divided in two halves). If the draw continues, there will be a penalty shoot-out.

In season tourney not needed they need 2 do real euro style instead of jus the group idea. Our players n teams lazier because our league reward losing. U get a good pick 4 bein a bad team but in euro they demote u 2 the lower leagues. Back when the lakers were 4-5 (and everyone was rightfully talking about how flawed and garbage they were) I bet on LA to win the IST. Not because I’m a Laker fan, I hate them, but because it was obvious the NBA was gonna put their thumb on the scales for them. Thanks NBA!
The Lakers were an 8 rotation team during most and after that stretch. Once key players came back, we saw what they could be as a team. After what the Lakers did to the Pelicans and the Pacers, you can't say the NBA "put their thumb on the scale for them."

@patrickmontie9583 if it was "random" it wouldn't go by Conference lol and teams like the nuggets, timber wolves, OKC, and the Suns (whom they beat twice) Rockets all had the same chances as the Lakers. The Pacers beat the 76ers ,Celtics and Bucks with Tyrese Haliburton has insane games with 10+ assist with 0 turnovers and once they meet the Lakers even with the free-throws they pacers got cooked and the Lakers shut down Tyrese Haliburton all game something the Celtics and Bucks and the 76ers couldn't do. The Only team in the league that has arguably better team defense than a fully healthy Lakers squad is the wolves.

I believe the In-Season Tournament should be called the All-Star Cup, and should take place during the middle of the season. Having historical accolades like All-Star Team selections on the line could increase the competitiveness of the tournament. The All-Star Cup final could be during All-Star Weekend. Also, the tournament should be based off of Divisions.
