Is fame becoming less sought after in today's society?
Thank you for watching.
Absolutely not. It's coveted more than ever.
People are getting dumber and less mature, not more.
@@brentharrington9235 Strongly disagree. It's more easy to get famous than ever via Social Media (TikTok, CZcams, Twitch, Kick, Rumble) - but the vast majority of people aren't interested in it.
if ive been wired to think its bad from an early age then im pretty sure more people have been convinced to that themselves, there are influencers doing anything crazy for clout , but more people have evidence of the bad aspects of fame than ever through stories weve learned. like weve realized smoking nicotine products are bad for you.
if i had something else to add to it is that people got to realize that people like matthew are the 1% who make it, the lucky guy who played all his cards right and survived, because every celeb is one step away from a will smith slap moment that they might not recover from.
People would go for fame if it means a better income. Rough times out here.
Personally I wouldn’t want to be famous. It didn’t work out well for poor Rebecca Schaeffer.
@@LilyGazou famous people love the perks and there are many. Former generations of very famous did not whine or seek sympathy for the less fun side of fame. The newer famous seem to think there should be no downsides to anything. Very childish.
I ran into Russell Brand exiting my local Walmart a couple weeks ago. He was pushing his cart and aside from being taller than most people, he didn’t look out of the ordinary here in SW Florida. I don’t think anyone even knew who he was or that he was famous. I said, Hey, I like your show. He replied, Hey man, I appreciate that. Seemed like a totally normal dude.
You like a show where every single day it’s a new conspiracy, fascinating.
@@fleafly70 Oh yes! I'm a conspiracy factualist. It's a big reason why I don't have myocarditis. It was either the FBI or the CIA who coined the term conspiracy theorist to describe people who didn't believe the narrative about JFK's murder. Funny thing, I knew an old retired CIA agent who said he heard a few other CIA agents talking about how they killed JFK while he was in Cambodia. He also flew drugs into the US during the Iran Contra deal. Said they all thought it was crazy but "they must have a plan." He's dead now. They got him with remdesivir and a ventilator. So, are you a regular troll, a bot, or an agent? 🤣🤣🤣
@@fleafly70we live in a time where many conspiracies have become reality, so there’s some merit there.
Did you apologise?
@@nicobr00 i assume you aren't American. We don't apologize for being friendly. 😆
Rich and private is 10x cooler than rich and famous
Multiply that by 10 minimum.
@@skillet9141 Agreed, even more really
A lot of those people are really really ate up though. That’s one thing about fame is it keeps you in check because the fame is the driving force not the money. I grew up in a wealthy area & there were a lot more ate up people that were rich & private than there were ate up famous people.
Bill Murray said it best. It was something along the lines of if you think you want to be rich and famous, then just try simply being rich first. Typically being rich is enough and is just fine. I thought that he put it succinctly with that statement. 👍🏾
Certainly more relaxing
"Don't do anything stupid for a while" has been my main motto since I hit my fifties.
72 hour rule ,after you hear something that could possibly go either way,by 72 hour you have a much better idea…
@@pauldavids7167I am going to remember this one, thanks.
Me too, but I still have trouble with it regularly ;)
How some people dream to be famous is beyond me because I can’t think of anything worse. If I bumped into someone famous I’d pretend I didn’t recognise him/her as a sign of respect for their space. It must be awful.
You can't expect to put so much out there and affect so many people without them attempting to reciprocate in some way.
@@iunnox666 Indeed. I was talking strictly about myself.
Cancers prob worse then fame
Same with me. It would be horrible. I have been near celebrities. I just ignore them. I don’t care that they are famous and there is always a flock of adoring fans around them.
@@SMaamri78 I would not ignore them because I am a VERY nice person 😆 but, seriously now, I would just briefly smile at them and move along. UNLESS it’s Peterson, of course 😈 ‘cause I would love nothing more than have a debate with him. In public. Of course, I’d have to get into deeper debt to afford to buy a ticket to one of his clownery shows. So, it’s advisable for him not to come or be in disguise 🤡
The most difficult thing I did was realize my parents were just human.
As opposed to... anthropoids?
haha same ! great comment
As someone who had plenty of friends in their 20s and 30s, very popular to having ZERO friends at 57 all I've learned during my life is that everybody is fake. Every. Single. Person. because people are selfish. You can have a best buddy for 20 years, but if he meets a girl that doesn't like you or is jealous of you your friendship will be over so soon it'll make your head spin. That lovely women you wrote wedding vows for and swore was your soul mate and the only one, will turn around and gut you like a fish when it no longer suits her. If fame meant I couldn't trust if people were genuine or not, the net change wouldn't be much anyway, and at least I might be rich, not that money means much to me but it removes problems. At 57 I'm retired on a pension of $100K per year for the next 7 years and I own my own house, so I don't need much. I think the biggest problem with fame would be not be able to just organically meet people. Matt looks great, finally grew his hair back haha.
I have one friend since we were 17. The kind you would give your kidney to if needed.
A lot of friends are in those outer circles. A lot of connections got destroyed over the v a x BS.
Enjoy your time 👍🏼
@@LilyGazou I don’t know how old you are, but when I was younger I had friends like that, that I thought would donate a kidney so to speak. They all just moved on at some point. One very close friend had his first sexual encounter with a girl, got her pregnant and just moved cities, never even told me. This was before mobile phones. I’ve never seen him again. There are others. My point is you can’t rely on most people.
I wish I could say you were wrong, but my husband and I have both come to the conclusion that the whole concept of friendship is pretty much bs. We both seemed to end up being the only ones giving more than we received, by a long shot. My husband and my late grandmother are the 2 humans I could trust with my life, and count on to be there for me as long as they're alive on this earth. I'm 54 so having known just 2 people like that in all this time ain't great odds, lol. I'm just grateful for them. Slim pickings out there.
@@thegentlelivingchannel Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not some depressed miserable person crying for the world to love me, just stating the facts. People's priorities change, people move around etc, they grow apart. What really annoys me is that I've spent my life with a strong moral code and a sense of honour, I don't lie, I don't cheat, I'm not violent, so if anyone accuses me of such things I'm utterly confused. A lot of people project their own insecurities onto others. I've always said that people who accuse people of lying are the most likely to be liars themselves, because to them, lying is normal. I don't lie, so maybe I trust people too much to do the same.
Friends aren't meant to last a lifetime, there their to help you grow and move on. Some stay 6 months some 10+ years.
Matthew is Real Texan and a Patriot that didn't Bowed to The Hollywood Insanity ❤ from Houston Texas
Except for his anti 2A stance.
@@crazyralph6386 yes. He is a real Texan but as a native I know that description means different things to different Texans. He and family are very libertine -
A patriot that allows himself to pimped by the demoncrats to take my weapons, spare me please
I’ll take the money, but you can keep the fame.
As the old saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for!”
When he said Ive only said that 4x in my life, its a word your not suppossed to throw around, i was sold on his true character
It depends. You are thinking of love in only the romantic sense. I love my spouse, I love my son, I love my cat, I love my dog, I love my garden, I love my home, I love a beautiful sunset and so on. I can LOVE Anything I want as much as I want.
Anonymity is a rich gift for me
I agree 100%. I am the type of person that like sparking up conversations with complete strangers while standing in line for something or meeting them in the street. I have learned a lot from total strangers. If I was famous I couldn't do that. Because of my fame the strangers would not be relaxed around me and we would not be on equal footing. Especially as I get older, anonymity is also a gift to me.
Peterson wants that gone
Hello Bert Reynolds!
He's pretty much describing social media. Everyone knows everything about each others lives these days even if they don't interact with them personally. It's so weird yet it's become the norm. Privacy is a virtue
I avoid social media unless it's work related or to share the gospel.
Damn what a compassionate source of wisdom Mr. Peterson is.
My Dad looked like Walter Matthau. We were approached regularly in public. Especially in restaurants. It was scary having people you don't know rushing toward you while you are eating. People are bold.
Americans are bold. That behaviour wouldn't occur in a private setting in Japan (in a sanctioned setting, yes, precisely because it would be sanctioned).
Yes, 'Resentment is toxic' but even better was, 'If flawed people were incapable of creativity, we wouldn't have any creativity'.
JP rides again!
So everyone is flawed? WOW how revolutionary
@@SithFam Post conversations you are having and let's see if you articulate and frame statements in a concise manner such as JP does! Don't worry...we'll wait.......

Love Mathew he’s grounded. 😊 he’s my Lincoln Lawyer & neighbor here on Austin. Love to shake his hand & meet his wife & kids. Solid dude; good roots. ❤
Couldn’t think of a more hellish cage than fame.
Brilliant actor, The Dallas Buyers Club actually brought me to tears. One of the best movies i have seen in a long time. And i could watch Jordan all day.🙏
I was face to face with Joe Rogan at an airport, I smiled, turned around and walked the other way.. you have no idea how badly I wanted to say something
He probably appreciated it tremendously
Matthew is so enlightened
There is a. Unhealthy obsession with celebrities in my opinion. Celebrities are people just like we are with the same issues in many cases. Matthew survived and thrived because he was a strong person with faith in God and family.
McConaughey seems like an interesting guy.... and when he said "they sure do through that out alot around here.... I have only said that to 4 people in my life" (i love you), that I could relate to lol. Seems like he really understood the depth of saying "i love you" and meaning it.
I usually find McConaughey a bit self absorbed but this was insightful.
lol
Yeah I wonder how much of that is due to his roles. Because I feel the same way but I don't think I listen to his interviews much.
He is more humble now than years ago. I could not stand him about 15 years ago. He was so cocky and arrogant back then. We all struggle with ourselves at any given point in our lives for different reasons.
+1
@@loripond1839 eh, people are young, people grow up.
I loved Matthew in Dazed and Confused and in We are Marshal...I know they might not be huge hits but his acting really spoke to me in both of those films.
I loved him in Dallas buyers club it's amazing he lost weight for this movie an he said he had a Dr monitoring it an a Dr had to help him gain it back .it's based on a true story an if you ever doubt drug company rule the usa this movie confirms it
Just what he mentioned….’I love you.’ ?
Freedom > Fame
👍🏼✅
So happy he’s like this… don’t change who you are… so much common sense and self respect ❤️
Beast actor & better human
The thing about anonymity is when its gone, it usually gone forever. People striving for fame should meditate on that more.
Years ago i read Harrison Fords autobiography. In it, it talked about him saying the worst thing about fame for him was losing his anonymity!!!
Jimmy Fallon and Met Bruce Springsteen . They always came into my CD/DVD store on Saturdays. Very nice guys! Chilled and very friendly.
This is 💯 on the money! Glad to see the good ones win.
I used to dog on Mathew because he’s Texas fan. But I really like this guy and his craft.
I adore Mathew. Very self aware human. The real fuckin deal
Love this conversation. It was straight up and authentic by both JP and Matthew McConaughey❤
I would rather be financially abundant and anonymous too.
They are so correct about not letting the resentment build in you over bad people . The people that your only an option to . Your only important when your of use to them . The best thing to do with these people is just let them drift out of your life . Also make a mental note in your mind next to that picture of them you hold in your mind . Take down the priority friend next to their name , and put fair weather friend . Do this with family as well . Family is not exempt from being toxic and using . If they are the people that only call when they want or need something even if they are family . They are only a drain on you emotionally and on your resources . Your true friends , the ones that will pick up the phone at 3 am and prepare for war if need be are your friends . The rest are fair weather friends only , and you do not have a priority sign next to your name in their minds .
True detective👊🍺
Loved this!
Matthew, you knew what was going on. You did ride through knowing what was going on, shame on you for not speaking up and telling the truth back on. Because you were older!!!!!
Great interview!
Great share!
I used to not like celebrities thinking that they thought they were all that, but I was wrong. They just want to do what they do and be normal. It's people who inflate them, idolize and become fanatical about them that creates their celebrity status and persona. I feel bad for them. I've seen a few famous people walking on the street and just left them alone. I respect their privacy, because they're human.
Matthew is great because he is constantly examining his own life. The idea of fame to me is that it is a tool like money or power etc. These things are tools to use to accomplish those things you need to accomplish. But our tools do not define who we are. What am I? Well, I like to think of myself as a tool in the hand of GOD. My only purpose is whatever my GOD uses me for. I have no purpose beyond that.
Great interview/exchange.
Jordons question was one I always wanted to ask a famous person if I was ever given the chance. His answer was honest with no bs. It reminds me of when I heard Howard Stern ask Bill Murray what’s it like to be rich and famous? His answer was “You ought to try just being rich”
Very interesting discussion gentlemen!!!
I make recordings for youtube and mostly extra i dont speak in my real language , that no one finds my channel when i want not. But i like it being known with it. I found 2 guys through it and i trust them the most and write with them. Its great
I once envied movie stars, then I was fortunate enough to be behind the scenes in Hollywood and very quickly realized, its producers who are the lucky ones. They live exactly like stars but can walk through the airport unfettered. Fame has few benefits.
My dad was a very famous artist. Friends with celebrities like Sidney Poiter. His clients were Debbie Allen, Halle Berry. He was deeply unhappy & a bit psychotic. The pressure was too great.
The reason WHY he got famous after one movie is because he is...an EXTRAORDINARY actor.
And in "Contact", he was completely different, kinda.
THAT'S a talent.
Two for the Money it's a real underrated movie The movie's fantastic.
Interesting perspective
I love Mathew. And I mean that sincerely and not romantically. I wasn't always a fan, although I did like A Time To Kill. I liked The Client better and the fact that the main actor is dead, gives so much value to everything Mathew is saying here. Funny enough, I'm at the absolute lowest point in my whole life and yet I feel like I've been asking the same questions, Who am I really? What's important to me? What can go without me even noticing, or what can go without much sadness? What and Whom do I really love (even if we fight like cats and dogs) and what is absolutely necessary? The answers were surprising. So much of what I thought I wanted was my Ego; what people thought of me and what will they say. I wasted all my savings last year trying to prove something I realized doesn't actually matter. Lesson learned. I'm moving forward now. Thank you for the interview. It was such a pleasure to watch and I'm taking real lessons from it. Thank you.God bless both of you.
I want to listen to Jordan Speak with Phil Robertson
Great video and great actor
I can see how one goes from knowing “love” from family and friends to being confused by emotional love by fans. Yes it would be easy to trade in the true love for the fake love because one needs not to work at the fan love. Easy peesy
Great actor and hi shold by Texas governor ...good chat gentlemans
Anonymity is priceless.
I started music in 2012 and started winning awards, and even a national competition. Bring 40 I knew the record companies want to cash in on it and leave me a slave. There's no money in music so I never signed any contracts. I don't want the whole world to know me and be completely broke on food stamps. I was going to tour DIY but COVID stopped me and now I raise chickens and build boats. I haven't played a show since 2017. Fame is overrated.
Good stuff. Both look healthy and sound it.
It’s not always the case that a father wants you to be better . Sometimes they want you to be lesser so they can feel superior and not inferior and scared like they really are deep down .
It would be difficult to become famous without money, a very generous person with plenty of resources could be famous just by publicly giving.
This actor is famous for a very similar reason,
2024 who still thinks fame is what it was in 1994?
It's a satanic club

Fame is a fickle mistress & erodes sanity.
Fame is definitely a seduction of Satan!
cool dude and pretty honest here. rough life in a way and blessed in another. I would not want fame. seems invasive as hell
As a european leftist. I still respect Jordan Peterson. Ive read two books by Carl Jung. His autobiography and Modern Man in Search of a Soul. And I respect his spiritual/symbolic view of what it is to be a person but at the same time I don't like the right wingism of Jordan Peterson's followers. You can be smart. And still listen to the Frankfurt School, Sartre, Foucault or Marx and not be an idiot. It just feels like america is still enraptured by McCarthyism.
Now write a paragraph summary on what Matthew McConaughey just said
It's got to be very difficult to maintain one's groundedness like Mr. McConaughey appears to have.
Your fame doesn't happen to you, it happens to everyone around you

I remember the game of actors from the 80s... Sike!!
Been the ( Grey man ) since I was 21. Give them the slip, zig when they zag, and live free. Dress modest in dull colors. Speak rarely and in hushed tones. Enjoy the everyday little things and nature, and the intoxicating presence of women. Works for me. And stir up a little trouble once in a while I think is a healthy thing.
His fame is overridden by his self-righteousness. He knows how everyone else should behave.
I have family members in movies. They are not mega stars or anything, but they still get bothered for the usual.
Being famous is the horror of life. You lose so many important things that equal sanity. The money wouldn't be worth it for me.
Yes my best girlfriend’s Uncle a very well-known character actor. We went to Disney World with them. No waiting in lines. Oh it was WAY fun ! He was old school though and told her he was never anything but grateful. How many get paid this well for playing on movie sets. John Wayne put up with a lot but his sons said he too never complained - he knew how blessed he was.
All the musicians Matthew has met over the years if they hear this, would be wondering if he's talking about them hahaha
Its good to know MM has only said “i love you” to four people. I have the same belief that it should be used appropriately, and when you only really mean it.
I was under the impression all americans just say it light heartedly to strangers.
Seeing all these (bad) influencers on youtube, its cringe when you see them say I love you to strangers… Its so fake IMO.. How can you say you love someone after one short interaction.
I don't understand why anyone would want to be famous. More money but famous ? No way.
Money requires no responsibility to those around u, you assume the money gives you sustainability
Interesting dazed and confused came out in 1993 and a time to was 1996. Then came the romantic comedies and some really good roles too. Fame opens up more evil doors than honest ones
Jordanus Interruptus (let the man speak!)
I think someone like Mathew McConaughey would feel more comfortable in public if a you just smile and maybe say g'day mate like a regular person. Peolple don't address a stranger by their first name.
Now many want to be Social media stars
Maybe 15 years back I would be out and people would stare at me. Cashiers would do it, and ask if I knew who I looked like. It got to the point they would ask and I would just say Robert Downey Jr and they would say YES! I thought it was funny but I didn't like it because it was weird and uncomfortable having people staring and approaching me. My gf hated it lol. I cant imagine being an actual celeb.
Matthew was one of the celebs who was pushing the jab. Ill never watch another of his films
I have no desire to become famous. I would not like people knowing or thinking they know me. I would feel at a constant disadvantage everywhere. It’s not for me and I’m not envious.
I miss the old JP
I can imagine fame maybe good at first, the travelling, gratitude from people, being around beautiful people but as you get older you realise and find it hard in normal society, who can you trust, does a person like me for my celebrity or money? Then you realise the people in you bubble in Hollywood are superficial and your sort of stuck? Not all of them.
Simple, realise before you get famous that all people are fake anyway.
Check out Nick Mullan reviews of Mathews book. HILARIOUS
Wanted to watch this but hot damn spit it out dude.. ask your question
I could never be a celebrity, I love my freedom and anonymity too much ...
All this navel gazing by famous people and the price of their fame is absolutely ridiculous. If I could hear just one of them say "I wish I could snap my fingers and go back to my previous life of desperate anonymity", I might take them a bit more seriously. You can go all the way back to the song "Fame" by Bowie and Lennon, they were guilty of the same kind of ridiculous hypocrisy.
Just shut up and enjoy it, nobody wants to hear wealthy, famous people whine about this nonsense, it's completely idiotic and disingenuous.
