I appreciate that you keep mentioning "but with the state of the world", but in fact, your situation is a prime example of the non-COVID effects of the Pandemic. So many people with medical issues are unable to get the care they need because of restrictions. And other people, whose care & treatment fits into the exceptions, are too scared to go to a doctor or hospital for fear of catching something. A nose job might sound trivial, but this is your breathing, your life, your face. It is important to YOU. You don't need to explain, excuse, or belittle yourself. Your surgery might have been elective, but that doesn't mean you deserve less.

    • @LyraShines

Exactly, she shouldn’t belittle herself because her breathing issues is a big problem to her. Yes, there are people going through worse; but that doesn’t make a problem she’s been dealing with for so many years any less. Especially with one of our main functions; to breathe properly.

    • @aura1475

For real! There also was no way for her to know in her healing process, a global pandemic would happen. While it could seem ‘selfish’ to be complaining about a nose surgery, this is important to be able to breath and not have the healing process go wrong. And this is all coming from someone who has a chronic illness and suffers from limited care right now. She’s totally valid for this and in the right timeline, she wouldn’t have had the world go to shit while she’s trying to heal from something that’s trying to help her breath properly. Heck, if you’re also gonna get the surgery to fix a breathing problem might as well go all out in my opinion.

@Victoria Frank Staph infections aren't a standard risk for nose jobs specifically. I feel like much of her healing issues are related to the staph infection not being handled for months. This is why you call everything out to your doctor even if it feels silly or unrelated (such as a funky smell that won't go away). Bother them all you need to, you paid them and they charged you for their time to start. It's not her 'fault', but you also can't fault the doctor for not being psychic.

    • @essi4133
      @essi4133 Před 4 lety +16

@Victoria Frank i actually had this exact surgery (not the rhinoplasty, but all the other parts) in february, and no one said anything about risks or complications whatsoever. i think because of it being such a standard procedure that's booked to be done on multiple people a day, it can become fairly routine to gloss over those bits. the ones who were telling me what to be careful of or look out for were the nurses later when i explicitly asked, not my dr. not saying if it's right or wrong, but just stating that this is pretty common/standard. when i went to get my tonsils removed when i was 21, they didn't list any risks or complications that could arise either.
i kind of suspect the reasoning for this is to avoid freaking out or worrying patients and allowing issues to be addressed potentially as they come out ? i'm not really sure. but just wanted to add my .02.
EDIT: actually, to add onto that, my dr preemptively put me on anti-biotics. i should say that i'm in the US however, so standard procedure is likely different everywhere.

Honestly if I was you I would consider contacting Dr. Nassif from the show “botched.” I don’t think you look bad by any means but with the breathing problems he usually recommends NOT going to the same doctor twice if they messed it up the first time. They usually fly people out for the show and stuff too but Idk how Covid would affect that. No matter what happens I hope you find some peace! 💕

It would be an interesting episode to do an online consultation. I actually wonder if maybe the first doctor didn’t recognize something that the second missed. Doing grafts along the nostrils might have prevented the skin from collapsing inward. Most people might do fine with the graft along the center, but her cartilage wasn’t the only problem.

Going to the same doctor I’ve heard is never a good idea but it’s her life and her nose so I just hope whatever she chooses it works well for her! 💐 i also think with her channel and past trouble with multiple breaks in her nose they would really consider her. Not the surgeon (who clearly did their best to advice a worried patient despite also having to wait for swelling to decrease to properly analyse the situation) and definitely not Alex. I also think that this series of videos is really important and might give people a bit of an insight into surgery and what it actually is. As well as all the variables that surgery deals with. Every person is truly different and therefore surgery sometimes comes with unpredictable results.
I also really appreciate that you mention the fact that people don't always show the whole healing process and it reminds me of only showing a picture of a fresh tattoo. It doesn't really show the end result and could be quite deceiving.

In the hospital we refer to that as “the infection/bacteria smell” - once you smell it you know it forever lol. But if it’s something like a cut or anything unrelated to a piercing that smell (esp
with discharge) is never “normal”, & should be looked into!

I've been made fun of about it for my whole life, and it's only gotten bigger as I've gotten older.
BUT I would NEVER get it fixed. Ever. It's my nose! I wouldn't like waking up to see someone else in the mirror. I've learned to love it because it makes me ME. My husband fell in love with and is attracted to this nose! He's never said "I love you despite your nose."
I wish I could give this feeling to everyone else who hates their nose. Now if someone insults it, I just say "yup, that's my nose" and move on with my day.

The time-lapse of photos at the end really got me. You can visibly see the change of emotions and how sad this whole process has made her.
For people saying she should've told the doctor immediately when she started smelling that bacterial scent and seeing white liquid, its really hard to tell when you're overreacting vs a valid concern. Especially when you're going through a rollercoaster of emotions. You don't really have the emotional distance to evaluate whether or not you should be concerned because that's all you are.
Its a difficult lesson to learn, but be the worried patient. Who cares if you're overreacting as long as you can assuage your concerns. Ask a ton of questions if need be because it is not on the patient to instinctively know the warning signs. But it is on the patient to be their own advocate (its just how the world works unfortunately).
You look as beautiful as always and I really hope the 2nd surgery works. 💕🤞

    • @gnu740
      @gnu740 Před 4 lety +16

Yes, exactly. Plus, all the other concerns she'd raised with the surgeon up until that point had been brushed off (not blaming the doctor either; most of the time it probably IS just swelling that goes down on its own). It's really hard sometimes to stand up for yourself when you feel like something isn't right, especially when you have a professional assuring you it's no big deal. After awhile you can start to second guess your gut instinct, and even feel like you're overreacting and wasting their time. It can be especially difficult for women - research has shown doctors tend to be more dismissive of pain and other symptoms in women than they are in men. Again, not saying Alex's doctor did this, but even one doctor doing so in the past can make it harder to seek help in the future, even from good doctors who listen to you.
None of this might apply, but people shouldn't be so quick to judge anyone's actions in this case. Sounds like a combination of mistakes, accidents, bad timing, bad luck, and general 2020-ness. Here's hoping the revision goes well, and Alex comes out the other side healthy and happier.

I'm terribly sorry this was your experience post-op, but also want to express tremendous gratitude for you being so candid and sharing it with people. I've been considering getting the same exact procedure, both septoplasty and rhinoplasty, and am now leaning toward not doing it because of your rollercoaster ride with it. I'm 33 - I have a bump that I've hated all my life (it became noticeable in 4th grade), and my sinuses are pretty terrible. I'll get migraines, frequent sinus infections, and can't really breathe well during workouts/ runs without my nose becoming literally a constantly dripping faucet.
I've thankfully found that breathe right strips every night while sleeping and during the day (when I'm not with people, I'll remove it and tolerate needing to blow my nose a lot instead) has helped TREMENDOUSLY, so I might just carry on with that for the rest of my life and just deal with it because I am just so, so sad for you about your experience!!! I know 100000% that feeling of wanting it all to be better, but now wonder if it's just as good as it will get, and am willing to deal with that.

I feel like this should have been deemed an essential visit to the doctor. Especially since you had a staph infection. Staph infections don't always end up great, you could have died. Plus, it's your nose and part of the surgery was to correct breathing issues and yours had gotten worse. Breathing is pretty essential and should be looked at as an emergent situation that justifies a visit. I am all sorts of angry for (and with you, I imagine).

I really admire how she was able to even wait that long.. I would have gone crazy... Seriously ><
They should have helped her right away instead of letting it get worse for such a long time. Especially since her issues had been constantly re-occuring and obviously NOT NORMAL AT ALL.
I had rhinoplasty myself and when she kept talking about all those complicatioms I just kept thinking 'omg no pls Alex you have to see a professional asap.. That's not normal.. Omg pls no, dont just wait'
Rhinoplasty in Australia is probably a lot more expensive than what I paid too.. Unbelievable how they treated her...

Tracking the healing process of surgery is essential--full stop. It doesn't matter if it was cosmetic, elective, or medically necessary; the only way things heal properly is through proper monitoring. If there was a definite timespan--such as two weeks or a month--I could see waiting. But when it's indefinite, the patient is fresh from surgery, and complications are being noted, a visit to the doctor is definitely essential and needed.

I'm agreeing with you, but I also want to put it out there that the smell and liquid seemed to be the biggest tell that it was a staph infection and she didn't disclose that until she had an appointment with the surgeon months later. Again, I'm not blaming either party, but the surgeon is not an oracle and I'm sure it's hard to catch something like that over limited communication through emailing. Just a really unfortunate situation I must say. Some speculation around the pandemic rules: There might be special rules that constitutes something as an emergency situation and I think that it might've been too narrow in what it includes. If that's the case I would say that the government made a mistake in their ruling of this and should've opened it up a bit more to at least include post-op appointments.

He said it was a major surgery and I was on my tummy for a long time, it will take some time to regain sensation. 12 years later, still no sensation. The doctors never listened to me and didn’t realize that I suffered nerve damage. I understand that was a natural risk of the surgery, and I’m okay with that. There is also some other sinus problems, with my sinuses completely blocked by polyps that need to be corrected and he said the drainage holes for the sinuses are too small too.
He flatly said if we go ahead there has to be an ear, nose and throat specialist to do the septum repair, remove the polyps and widen the sinuses holes, he will remove the slight hump and refine the tip.
I didn't even know I had a hump and thought the tip was droopy, but it turns out the tip is correct. I appreciate however that he was completely honest

I had a couple cosmetic surgeries that didn't turn out as good as I had hoped and it helps me to remember that I am probably the only person looking at the scars, and esp the only one seeing them with anger and humiliation. And I still think your nose is very petite and nice. But it's too bad you're having the breathing problems. I have breathing problems, too, and my nostril is a little crooked on that side probably because of what is going on internally, but I am terrified to change it even more. And nobody even notices the difference anyway. Hope you're inhaling better now. Would love a follow up video just to see how you're doing mentally and physically.

I had to go to the end. I was afraid you weren’t going to have a nose at the end! Spoiler alert Alex still has a nose! My God, yes please film the next operation. When you didn’t post for so long I feared much worse had happened.

Girl, you can’t just come this far & leave us hanging, we require a post October update. I have a couple of friends who have had sinus related surgeries, and the difference in their breathing was so much better like within the week. Hopefully the revision fixes everything for you, stay focused and this too shall pass!

I am so sorry you went through such a tough time, and I cannot believe you didn't present more symptoms with the staph infection! Most people would begin vomiting or running fevers with it, but you're like a trooper for having to deal with this at all.
I feel like your surgeon was neglectful with you, COVID-19 or not, you could have easily gotten incredibly ill from an unchecked infection.

I literally started shaking three quarters of the way into the first video. I love gross things, horror movies and the like.. but I almost couldn't make it to the end of your story.. I'm so glad that you have such an amazing support group in your life. I can't imagine going through what you did. You were incredibly brave.
I wish you would ignore nasty comments from social media. It's a jungle out there, and it really seems like people are mean to others just to get a rise, or are simply bored. If you see a negative comment, ignore it. Everyone who puts themselves out there (especially here on youtube) has to deal with these type of asshats. CZcams seems to be a breeding ground for it, then acts like flypaper.
Your nose LOOKED fine before. Having breathing issues is another story. All that said, I know I'd love to see this story through. Please film your 2nd (and hopefully final) surgery process. I understand that your current doc is going to do the work your insurance won't cover for free. But if possible, look for a different doc anyway. But if you stick with the same doc, film EVERYTHING, even when he tells you not to. He doesn't have to know.
I truly hope things work out, and please keep us posted. You're beautiful, no matter what you decide to do.

Shows how much people think having a nose job is simple and easy and within a few months you have this fantastic new nose.
I do hope the correction helps you breath better, but please remember, your beautiful. You always were.
The way your husband looks at you, with such devotion and love in his eyes..... I know that may not help when it comes to self image but try to remember that x

Mine was basically smooth surgery (well, considering that the doctor warned me about having a thick skin on the tip of my nose, and that he couldn't be sure of the result) and recovery, but it's wrong to expect for it to be the same for everyone.

I would not let that doctor anywhere near my nose until I got a second/third/fourth opinion.
You followed your instinct that the doctor wasn't taking you seriously, and even the online advice from a couple of pics was that the original surgery was botched.
I would seriously consider going to see other doctors for advice before going under the knife again.
Be safe Alex and keep smiling ❤
