    PART 1:
    • DYING MY HAIR PURPLE!!...
    Whoops, I did it again! I loved the purple hair in Part 1 so much that i've decided to come pack for round 2, but this time i'm trying out a brand called Dare. I bought this hair dye at Hairhouse Warehouse. The three shades I ended up using were shade 1 (Forget Me Not), Shade 4 (Forbidden Grape) and the "Pearl Toner & Pasteliser". In part 1 I bought a bunch of Schwarzkopf Live Pastels in Lilac Blush to dye my hair - things didn't quite go as planned with that product, so I decided to try a second time with a new brand, and i'm really happy with the results! I'll come back and update you on how many washes it lasted.
    What do you guys think about my new hair? Leave your comments below and let me know suggestions for what I should do to my hair next!
    If you're in Australia and want to try Dair temporary hair colour, this is where I bought them: (not sponsored or affilate)

    • @shelbycat8234
      @shelbycat8234 Před 4 lety +29

      Exactly, buy the darker purple and dilute with 3-5x the amount of conditioner or more. 1 tube of the grape, plus a few big 1L bottles of white conditioners = about 5 applications. $5-10 per dye job. 👌

    • @shelbycat8234
      @shelbycat8234 Před 4 lety +29

      Also by only shampooing first, you are technically conditioning your hair as you colour it when it's mixed with conditioner. I would sit and relax and leave mine in for hours. Deep conditioning and gorgeous EVEN colour!

    • @faerie888
      @faerie888 Před 4 lety +11

      Shelby Cat exactly! shampoo and dry your hair and the dye will go though the hair shaft easier since the hair cuticle is open plus if your hair is dry the colour won’t be diluted by the water and the colour will stay for longer. It’s amazing how much hair brands will basically scam customers who don’t know any better! I buy my pink tubes from Brite and they last me a year from diluting them with conditioner!

  • @Ilikeoatmealmorethanyou
    @Ilikeoatmealmorethanyou Před 4 lety +339

    your hair is patchy bc the hair porosity is different from your roots to your ends. colouring your hair over and over won't fix the patchy-ness. lavender is a really hard colour to get consistent throughout tips to roots and it's something that fades within a few washes. in order to make it not patchy you just need to have your hair lightened with bleach more evenly but even so - it WILL still fade unevenly. no matter the brand of lavender hair colour you use. YOUR HAIR STILL LOOKS AMAZING THOOOO!!!! 💜 lavender hair is just so hard :') haha

  • @catman6089
    @catman6089 Před 4 lety +176

    Hairstylist / Licensed Cosmetologist here! Loving the videos, but lemme answer some of your questions you had throughout the video, as well as some of my own thoughts.
    1) If you are going to lighten your hair with bleach, do it on unwashed hair, usually 2-3 days of wear. If you're only coloring the hair (like you did in this video) you want to make sure the hair is clean so the product can penetrate the hair. That's where the "no shampoo / no conditioner" thing comes from
    2) The brands you've been using so far are called semi-permanent color, or direct dye color. This means there is nothing you need to add to the color (like hydrogen peroxide developer) in order to make it work. This kind of hair color is very flexible. In general, you can mix and match, customize your own color, dilute with conditioner, etc.
    3) as you yourself realized, you need to section your hair. even just four sections (splitting your hair down the middle and then from ear to ear, creating an "X" or "+" shaped part on your head) is good enough for this kind of process. You also need to apply more color than you think you need to, because pre-lightened hair like yours loves to soak up color like it's nothing, which leads to dry patches
    4) I have not personally used Arctic Fox brand hair color, but it's probably your best bet in the future, if it's available in Australia. If not, there are tons of brands of semi-permanent or direct dye hair color, and some quick google searches will give you what you need
    5) I would stay away from the expensive, boutique-looking brands. They tend to be overpriced and underperform. For context, I can go to my local professional beauty supply and pick up 3 tubes of salon quality color for the price of what you payed for one tube of Dare
    6) the ends of your hair didn't take the color very well because of something called Porosity. Porosity is a measure of the hair's ability to absorb and retain any kind of water, moisture, or hair product. In this case, because your hair is bleached, and the ends of hair are always older, drier, more damaged, and more porous, it couldn't hold onto the hair color. The hair at your roots is fairly young, much more healthy, and has a lower porosity, so it took the color better
    Overall, I think you did a pretty good job given the supplies you had. In the future, I would recommend doing at least 4 sections, using a ton of color, diluting with conditioner, and maybe even distributing the product with a hair brush. If you have any more questions I'd love to answer!

      Luke E what you say about porosity is interesting. Is that what can cause frizziness? Nothing I try seems to work. I've never died my hair. I've tried drugstore brands like Garnier and Suave to salon anti-frizz oils and lotions. I follow the directions and even reapply within the hour. I live in a humid area 24/7/365 and once I'm out the door, it's like I didn't even condition, let alone apply two--three coats of anti-frizz/hair moisturizer/lotion-then oil to my hair. I tie my hair up and carry a comb to put my hair into some semblance of decent at work. I'll take any advice. Please and thank you.

    • @gothempress
      @gothempress Před 4 lety +2

      @@sekaihatsu I lived in Florida for a spell and have the same frizzy hair issue. That is more on your hair's curl pattern than damage, specifically. Usually damage will result in a more "bedhead" type look but it doesn't usually contribute directly to frizz, barring breakage frizz and a natural curl pattern. What I use for products that helped me tame my frizz was the following:
      -Biolage Shampoo and Conditioner: Hydrating formula w/o silicon or paraffin. Wash once every 3-4 days, only when your hair is in need. The first week or two it may take time to adjust to this schedule if you don't do this already. Use dry shampoo to help in the interim.
      -After shower, I put on Redkin Antisnap leave in conditioner from root to tip, more generously on tip and very sparingly at the root
      -Then apply Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny serum. This miracle stuff will sincerely help tame your frizz while letting you keep either your natural curl pattern or pin straight hair. Apply from tip to almost to root, avoiding the root. If you go up to the root, it can make your hair look unwashed very quickly.
      Use a flat paddle brush when brushing your hair and a wide tooth comb when it is wet or deeply tangled. This also helps prevent breakage to help alleviate frizz from that breakage. Try to avoid heat products, but if you do use them, use a heat protectant like Moroccan Oil Perfect Defense.
      Hope this helps!

    I’m a qualified hairdresser in the uk and would recommend next time you dye your hair to use manic manic or directions it’s a lot cheaper than what you used I would also recommend getting a darker than you want like the dark colour you used today and get some cheap white conditioner and mix it in with the colour and mix more than you think you will need also section your hair into four sections on your head and start from the bottom work your way up and really rub it into your hair so it saturates every strand and really rub it into your scalp the first time was the brands fault not sams don’t worry
    Also if you want to be more adventurous in the future you can mix a darker colour with conditioner apply that to your ends then add the darker colour too your roots and rub the two colour together between your finger and your thumb to create and ombré but only do this if your really daring

      Amen. Alex, you have the Tresemme brand in your shower, and the fact that it's white makes it perfect for diluting dye, since it doesn't distort the color- what you see mixed in the bowl is the final result. I mean, I once used green conditioner to dilute, and it worked fine, but only because I already knew the perfect ratio of dye to conditioner.

The best method for me is shampoo before with a sulfate shampoo to really open the cuticle, let dry, add color, and lastly rinse with ice cold water (I usually do multiple colors), add a little leave in conditioner, and let dry. Wash once a week.

      Sleeping in the color does nothing actually. Hair can only absorb so much product at once and after a certain period of time, the wet dye simply just oxidizes/loses the ability to penetrate the cuticle. Happens sometimes around the 60 minute mark.

    My biggest regret when dying my hair, was trying to bleach it myself. I used Lighting by Manic Panic, and i came out patchy and orange. Went to my salon a week later and got it done professionally, and haven't looked back. I'd also blame the brand vs blaming Sam. Everyone swears by Swof-*can't spell the name* because it started in salons and went 'drug store', from personal experience from shampoos to dyes, they actually suck. I've honestly washed my hair, when i've been greasy... I was twice as greasy after drying. And clearly their dyes are crap with that inconsistency between dyes.

    Purple haired person here! I've been dying my hair purple for almost a year and here's some of my thoughts:
    I think this purple looks lovely on you! Please know that pastel hair shades are very hard to achieve as well as maintain. They wash out quickly because they are so light. The lighter the base, the better the colour will show up.
    I have medium blonde hair myself and have been trying out a ton of brands. Had a lot of trial and error and learned A LOT from it. If anything, the brand I love and recommend most is ARCTIC FOX. It's seriously amazing!! No other dye has worked as well for me. They have tons of colours to choose from and you can mix them to get your desired shade also. I personally use Purple Rain mixed with Violet Dream and do not add any conditioner since I want my purple to be as vibrant as possible. A good thing about Arctic Fox is that it's a non-toxic and non damaging product, meaning you can leave it on for as long as you want without damaging your hair! (It's cruelty free and vegan too). I usually leave it on for as long as possible, around 3-5 hours, but around 1 hour should be more than enough. It leaves my hair super pigmented, really soft, shiny and healthy! It basically feels like doing a hair mask but with adding colour.
    The big downside about having coloured hair for me is that in order to maintain it for as long as possible, it's recommended to wash it with water AS COLD AS YOU CAN STAND IT. Since I'm cold all the time, I really hate this part :') but it definitely helps! Something about your hair "scales" not opening up in cold water. In hot/warm water they do, allowing any colour to wash out much faster. Also washing your hair as little as possible helps to enjoy your colour longer! Personally I'm trying to stretch it to washing once a week now.
    Another thing: I never bleached my hair and still Arctic Fox gets my hair extremely pigmented. I'm really iffy about not wanting to damage my hair so I'd rather not bleach it, but with this dye, it's not even necessary! I bet it would stick to your hair even better, since yours is much much lighter than mine.
    Just some things that I learned during my purple hair journey. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask!

    I have been dying my hair for about 5 years now and my best advices are:
    Section your hair the same way you section it to iron or curl your hair, then you can apply it with your hands just the way you did
    You can "pastelize" a hair dye with conditioner, people will tell you that it won't last but it's not like pastel dye lasts for more than 5 washes so, don't trust them
    Check the color wheel when you decide to change the color, for example, if you dye your hair pink and then when it's faded you put green on top you'll have gray hair in the end
    It can get expensive to dye your hair pastel colors, but it's really really fun, I decided that I'm with every single cent and I love myself more when my hair is a fun color
    If you decide not to continue dying your hair, you'll have to just accept the fact that the roots are visible and that the rest of your hair is bleach blond, I do not recommend to dye it with your natural hair color, trust me it's still visible, there is no box dye that matches perfectly your hair and if after a couple of years you decide to try a new color again you won't be able to remove the box dye

    • @evilxxfairy
      @evilxxfairy Před 4 lety

    For years I had colorful hair. The best way, I have found, is not only glopping it on your hair but use a wide-tooth comb or brush made for wet hair, and ensure the color is evenly coating your hair. I also like using the darker colors towards my roots and blending it into the lighter towards the ends. It helps to cover-up some of those problem areas. And, of course, bleaching prior to color also helps too.
    I think it looks great, however!

  • @elliew7117
    @elliew7117 Před 4 lety

    As someone who has been every colour ever, i would always reccomend going darker and more vibrant than you initially want. Usually the change feels more drastic and makes you love it more, and then it takes longer to fade to a pretty pastel, which saves money and keeps you happier with your hair for longer🥰 my personal fav dye is Luna Tides or Bleach London🥰

GOOOOODDDD i want to fly to Australia find you and just do your hair for you for free 😂😂😂😂 i love you so much and that would be a dream!! Also ALWAYS use cold water anything other will strip the color even luke warm. Luke warm is best after a couple days and you go to wash for the first time. Worst hair dye mistake I’ve made: A while ago, I wanted to dye the under part of my hair purple for the summer of 6th grade with my best friend. We used a cheap drugstore dye. We did hers first, then washed it out. Then we applied mine. Afterwards, we were too tired to wash it out, so I had to sleep with it in... the next day we washed it out. The color actually came out great! Better than expected. But, the dye stayed in my hair for over 3 years and slowly faded out... 😅

    I like how you have the top part of the hair darker than the ends because it does create some dimensions. Next time just blend the colors more. I learned from my hairstylist to wash my hair with cool water instead of hot because it will open the pores in the hair more and it will wash the dyes out more easily. If you are still interested to try other brands, I've been using Overtone to maintain my hair color. Get the color conditioner, that one leaves more color pigments. Plus they have a line for pastel colors and you can mix colors to get the color you want. It's not cheap, but it does help keep the hair from drying out more like most box dye. Love to see more hair color dyes in the future! Keep up to good work!

Which was upsetting for multiple reasons, the price of it being one of them. So I was concerned the same may happen to you but luckily it didn't. I had a bit of success box dying my hair a few years back but now I exclusively get it done at the hair dresser. I would rather pay the premium for it because I know it will come out beautiful and I know it will last me. Even when it fades it looks soooo much better than the box dye. Girrrl... you dont need to watch in a mirror the whole time. You need to section your hair (it's so important.... s e c t i o n y o u h a i r ... pleeez. This is how you avoid the patchy areas. you need to apply it evenly using a brush to really work it into each section... to work it in down the hair toward ends you can also use your gloved fingers. just go by feel and check it in the mirror to be sure you coated it well. Please watch Guy Tang and/or Brad Mondo. And you didnt need to buy that weird expensive dye. I feel like you were swindled by cute packaging. I dont think I have ever spent 20 bucks on a bottle of dye. Get Arctic Fox or Manic Panic dye. And you can use hair conditioner to thin out the color to pastel... mix your dye with something like Treseme conditioner or probably any other kind... that's just what i use.

      Arctic Fox, Manic Panic, and Overtone aren't really common brands here and can be hard to get. I don't know of many (if any) that have them in store to buy, and they are WAY more expensive than the brand she got in this video. The brand she got is like $22-24 AUD whereas the brands you're talking about are all $27.95-35AUD per bottle/tub/tube.
      Just a friendly FYI :) Australian brands are different!

      Sectioning is a must! But a dye brush.... No, not with temporary color you are putting all over your head, even brad applys them with his hands and tells others it's just easier

      He usually uses a brush. It wastes less product, and is more precise. He also says to work from the bottom of the hair to the top. I watch all of his videos while I dye my hair or aka aislinn.

      @@evilxxfairy I watch them all too, and he recommends to people at home to just use their hands if they aren't comfortable with brush, also if you are just doing one color....

      The brite organics brand purple is amazing, one tiny half teaspoon in a bowl of conditioner is enough to make your whole head pastel purple and lasts for a while. They sell it at priceline and woolies i think.
