    The DS version is the superior one for me. It has better graphics, improved level design, new stars, new stages, more playable characters, better camera controls, mini games and it's portable. I don't see anything it did worse than the original. And yes, the original was revolutionary for its time and had a much greater impact on the game industry than the remake, but why should that matter when deciding which one is the better game?

    I played both and the remake is 100 times better, besides the fact that the graphic is perfect compared to the original but it also fixed some of the flaws of the original game. plus I don’t truly understand the point of complaining about some characters flaws, that’s literally the point of being able to play different characters, other wise they’d be all the same and not special. Also, when it comes to the story it makes completely sense that Yoshi is the only available character at the beginning, he is innocent and not a threat towards Bowser, so of course Mario and the others got kidnapped and Yoshi was left alone.

    Before you start a level with Yoshi, you have a choice to pick a character hat to change into whichever character. That’s why I stick with Yoshi. And did you know the only mandatory character you need to unlock is Mario himself. Pretty bizarre, right?

I do find that playing some of the classic levels as different characters can be interesting and I think they were going with a ‘play how you want to play’ style I’m giving you the choice of who you want to play a level as but then forcing you to play as certain characters in order to get certain stars. I can excuse most of this games issues, even the vastly inferior controls that were augmented to the D-Pad, so that even an analog stick can't fix them.
    But the run button, oh the goddamn run button! In a game where most of the time you wanna run at full speed, making you hold a button is the dumbest choice ever.
    I can somewhat excuse it for Mario Kart, since it's supposed to simulate pressing the gas pedal and for New Super Mario Bros because at times you may not want to go full speed because there's obstacles at every corner. But not Super Mario 64 DS, where all you basically do is running in these big 3D environments. Instead they could've made it so that holding the run button made you slow down. In fact I was desperately looking for mods back then, that allowed you to invert the Y button specifically just for this game.
    For the time period SM64 DS was a very impressive feat and it's still a really impressive concept, but it's not a game that aged well.

    The change to Whomp's Fortress more than makes sense as it's supposed to only be the 2nd Level in the game. Having the forgiveness of the lower area if you fall was a good decision & there's still 1 of those 3 that does still drop new players to their death. As well as that you couldn't be more wrong about the GameCube dying in 2004, it still had another 2 years before Nintendo abandoned it & the sales were by no means abysmal. GameCube was quite successful considering the fact it was going up against the PS2 & is generally viewed as having been the 2nd best 6th Gen Console these days.

      @@ThomastheDankEngine8900 Nintendo got screwed over by Sony & Xbox entering the console war. GameCube had a better game selection than Xbox & was notable for having much better hardware than PS2. Had a few things happened differently GameCube would have actually won the console war.
      PS2 got extremely lucky with Microsoft choosing to market against Nintendo in a way that allowed it to appear to be the best balance in terms of games offered. All in addition to having extremely popular exclusives like Kingdom Hearts. Sony pulled some serious crap to get ahead in the gaming industry like Corporate Espionage to destroy Sega during the 5th Gen Console Era.
      These days it's absurd that people ignore Sony being every bit as anticonsumer as Nintendo in addition to being antideveloper. For some reason people often get angry at Nintendo for taking down CZcams videos of music even when Sony does the exact same thing just as often. People also tend to forget Sony's success with PS2 was the entire reason Nintendo stopped trying to have cutting edge hardware for consoles starting with Wii.

      @ThomastheDankEngine8900 Před 2 lety +1

      @@WaterKirby1994 it kind of feels like you’re one of those Nintendo fans thats stuck in the past and have a bitter hatred towards Sony. As someone who likes all three, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, I can safely say that if it weren’t for Sony, gaming would not be nearly as mainstream or accepted by masses today.
      Nintendo didn’t get screwed over by Sony or Microsoft. A lot of their downfall was their own doing, and they made a lot of mistakes that cost them.
      Refusing to work with Sony and making a CD add on for the SNES was greedy, and cost them, as they caused Sony to enter the console market, and Sony has defeated them in (handily might I add) almost every generation.
      Refusing to use the CD Rom format (which could hold 700 MB as opposed to a cartridges 64 MB, and was much easier for third parties to develop for) allowed the PlayStation to sell over 100 million units and have over 4000 games developed for it, as opposed to the N64 selling 33 million units and having less than 400 games on the system.
      Nintendo’s arrogance and bad treatment of third parties also had most of them jump ship to Sony, and later on, even Microsoft.
      Refusing to use the CD Rom format a second time, with minidics that not only hold less data (1.4 GB as opposed to 8 GB on a dual layered disc) but also disc rot faster than normal CDs. This was bad for both developers and consumers, so again less games were made for the GameCube than its competition.
      Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles also function as multimedia devices beyond games, so that’s another strike towards Nintendo. Their consoles are for games and games only, which limits their utility and market value.
      This was obvious with the fact that both the PS2 and OG Xbox could play DVDs at a time where DVD players were expensive and allowed it as a solid plus towards the consoles that the GameCube didn’t have.
      The GameCube also had the worst online feature of the sixth gen consoles (and even today Nintendo has terrible online).
      The GameCube was marginally more powerful than the PS2 but the media format of the GameCube is what really hurt it. The format made games compress their memory and as a result the power advantage was squandered and many PS2 games ran better than GameCube games.
      Even still, if you wanted power the original Xbox was vastly more powerful than the other two consoles (almost rivaling PCs).
      For your point about the Xbox, did you know it was actually Sony’s dominance that caused Microsoft to enter the console arena?
      Plus, Nintendo was definitely the weaker link between the two. They made very few M games while Microsoft made very few kid games so thats why Sonys console had the best balance and library, and why it had easily the broadest appeal.
      The dumbest mistake of all was Nintendo marketed the console in purple. Nintendo went out of their way to make the GameCube as uncool as possible, and for a lot of people buying games at the time, it was a big deal.
      I’d say the GameCube has the worst marketing of any console ever (console itself is great though), as Nintendo tried to go out of their way to say it was a toy, and that’s why it got criticized as for kids.
      Even in the best case scenario, the GameCube would have still been soundly trounced by the PS2, although it could have easily outsold the Xbox if Nintendo wasn’t so arrogant and hellbent on trying to screw over their own console.
      In order for the GameCube to succeed it needed to use regular CDs, play DVDs, be marketing in a different color, and have better online. Some of those are easy fixes but for most Nintendo just stuck their head in the sand while the game industry was leaving them behind.
      They learned the wrong lesson from the GameCube though. It being powerful wasn’t why it failed. It was the marketing and Nintendo’s arrogance.
      The GameCube is way better than the Wii and Wii U which are terrible. The Switch is my favorite Nintendo console but my favorite console of all time is the PlayStation 2.

    • @WaterKirby1994
      @WaterKirby1994 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ThomastheDankEngine8900 GameCube had the best controller ever made, Purple is a wonderful color & if you don't like it there were plenty of other potential colors to choose from including Black, Silver, Gold, Orange, & even Blue. GameCube wasn't a kiddy console by design, rather a console designed to be enjoyed by all ages. Microsoft's branding as the mature console resulted in a lot of the M rated games leaving Nintendo.
      Also you fail to understand the minidisc format & it's brilliance entirely. These smaller discs cost much less for Nintendo to produce & games could easily have a 2nd Disc if they needed them. Most games of the 6th Gen Console Era didn't even completely fill the GameCube Disc. The smaller discs allowed faster load times which was the entire reason N64 went with Cartridges instead of releasing that addon Disc Drive.
      Nintendo wasn't threatening developers the way Sony was. If you don't develop for PS2 you won't develop games for any of our future consoles. Also keep in mind that I mentioned what Sony did to Sega. Switch is good, although it has 1 fatal flaw with its controls that ruins it for me. Joycon Drift is the 1 bad thing about Switch. Had Sony not done so many scummy things I would be praising them.

    • @ThomastheDankEngine8900
      @ThomastheDankEngine8900 Před 2 lety +1

      @@WaterKirby1994 i’m sorry, it just seems like you fanboy for Nintendo and hate Sony because of their success. Most of Sony’s success was because they made smart decisions and are willing to change with the times while Nintendo has been stuck in the past.
      The GameCube controller is nice, but it really has its flaws. Asymmetric shoulder buttons, the face buttons are different sizes, and the D Pad is awful. It’s a good controller but even by Nintendo’s standards I prefer the Switch Pro controller. Overall I think the consistent and symmetric design of the PlayStation controllers are better, and what I prefer.
      The color was a problem because it opened the door for really easy criticism that its competitors could use to say the console was a purple lunchbox for kids. I don’t agree, and the small size is nice since it takes up less space but they should have marketed it in black. The N64, PS2, and OG Xbox were all black consoles so it would have been a better choice. This one decision probably cost them a few million sales since people felt that owning a GameCube was uncool and for kids because it was purple.
      As for the mature games, Nintendo since the NES has censored games and Mortal Kombat during the SNES era is a great example. Nintendo consoles and mature games never really mixed but it hit its fever pitch with the GameCube. The N64 had less than 10% of its library as mature games and many times Nintendo refuses to advertise them anyways (Conker’s Bad Fur Day), so many companies just don’t bother putting mature titles on Nintendo’s consoles anyway.
      As for cartridges and minidiscs, yeah, you’re just wrong here. Considering the fact even Nintendo, who are very stubborn, never used the format again, speaks volumes about its flaws. The minidiscs rot faster than regular discs, are more fragile, and fail more easily. To boot, they are harder and more expensive for developers to make games on. Of course Nintendo during this era only cared about themselves and thought they were the center of attention because of their arrogance and thought their costs were the only thing that mattered.
      Regular discs can hold more data, are cheaper to develop and mass produce, are less costly and much easier for third parties to develop, and take up less space than cartridges. Plus many other functions come with DVDs. The original PlayStation could play music CDs like the Sony Walkman, and the PS2 and Xbox could play DVDs, when DVD players were expensive. Due to Nintendo’s dumb decisions during the era, their game consoles could play games, and games only.
      As a side note due to how expensive cartridges were, used N64 games cost more than new PlayStation games. So not only was it more expensive for developers, but consumers as well, so you could get more games for cheaper on the PlayStation.
      This was also a problem because the PlayStation had over 10 times as many games as the N64, so if you’re claim is your a game console, and you can play way less games than your competition which is also a multimedia entertainment device, that’s not good. It’s also why the PS2 and Xbox got more games than the GameCube, and had appeal to families who also wanted a DVD player and a console for their children.
      I’d take load times any day over my console having fewer games and serving only the purpose of playing games. There is a reason every home console from the time the CD Rom format was introduced, barring the N64 and GameCube, used the format, and still use the format. It’s objectively speaking better for everyone, and better than using cartridges.
      The space issue was a problem and the reason their aren’t any GameCube games that use multiple discs is because games with lots of data or were more mature or online oriented just skipped the console.
      Now, I’ll be fair. The N64’s analog stick was extremely revolutionary, and the GameCube’s GameBoy Player is an excellent and unique selling point, merging Nintendo’s home console with its much stronger handheld success.
      As for Nintendo vs. Sony when it comes to scummy behavior? I’d say Nintendo wins for sure and they are way more arrogant to boot. They started the trend of treating third parties terribly (can only make three games a year, only develop for our console, can’t make the games you want, just what we approve of), whereas Sony opened the door for a lot of game franchises to be made because they allowed developers to make the games they wanted. Nintendo has gotten better in this regard, but Sony is who allowed these companies and developers to thrive. I’ve never heard of them threatening people, nor the Sega thing you’re talking about.
      I think Sega kind of screwed themself with the Saturn as it was. Nothing their competitors would do would make a difference, as they messed up themselves.
      I don’t have an issue with joycon drift myself but I think the bad online is my issue with the Switch and Nintendo in general.

    One DS game I would like to throw into the ring is Okamiden. It's more of an adventure game (like Zelda) and less a platformer (like Mario or A hat in time), but it offers 3D enviroments to walk around in. Trust me. I've never let go of this game or Mario Kart 64 since my grandmother gave them to me *and* the N64 console as well. I believe the *N64* version is SO MUCH BETTER than the DS version as the N64 intro makes SO MUCH MORE sense than the DS version does and the world of the N64 version is SO MUCH EASIER for you to explore also, as well as the analog stick being better for you than the control PAD. Overall I'd rather stick with the N64 version than the DS version even though DS has more characters.

      Hey, that's your opinion. And just because a game is newer doesn't mean it's better. Super Mario 64 is still better than Super Mario Odyssey, in my opinion, because the bosses and the storyline are better in Super Mario 64. Also, the character design is better. I don't like it that SMO has goombas and koopa troops with moustaches. Plus I don't like the possessing/capturing gimmick in SMO with the use of cappy.

    • @ThomastheDankEngine8900

      Personally I think its a matter of preference. Some people might like the content of the DS more but others might like the much nicer controls of the original (even if later entries control better).
      There were some nitpicks but he also brought up some really good points. It’s fine if you like the remake more but to handwave his arguments and say its just nostalgia is being unfair.
      As someone who believes that each 3D Mario Platformer that came after is better anyways this argument is kind of a moot point. However, it just seems like people who like the DS version always resort to saying anyone who likes the N64 version more only likes it because nostalgia when there are definitely reasons that it has in its favor.
      I’d say the controls complaint is very valid since the whole point of the original was showing off what analog movement in a 3D environment could do and is one of the most revolutionary games of all time. Even if you think the remake is better you can’t ignore how important the original is when industry impact is discussed.
      Basically, there isn’t really a need to attack him and dismiss his arguments just because you don’t agree with his opinion. It’s also ironic that you say he’s biased when you’re clearly biased towards the remake.
