    • @Wahaller
      @Wahaller Před 7 lety +13

      I think it's because of the DS' major limitations when it comes to quality, like video and audio, because it is a pretty small device and they were still testing with stuff. If the game came out on the 3DS/Wii U the quality would be a lot better. But still, the music is horrible.

    • @brendoncurry581
      @brendoncurry581 Před 7 lety +8

      Alex Harris I definitely agree with what you're saying, but the more I'm thinking about it, I honestly think the majority of the problems in the game was due to rushing something that wasn't ready. The DS was fairly new at the time and I think there was a big rush to make a remake of the game and make money. They definitely had to make changes to the music to conform to the Ds's limits although honestly no idea why they changed some of them. Anyway I believe in the end due to rushed development time and the limitations of the first Nintendo DS, the remake ended up like... this.

      im wondering if its because of the same reason the soundtrack for the gba remake of dkc3 had to be redone.
      dkc3's music in the original is really really bass-heavy, and the soundchip for the gba isnt. good enough to deal with it properly, so they were forced to make an all-new soundtrack.
      the original dkr's OST has a lot of bass, maybe the DS cant handle bass very well

  • @cravdraa
    @cravdraa Před 7 lety +55

    Hey, I was a huge fan of Diddy Kong Racing and played both versions pretty exhaustively.
    Let me share some changes and differences you missed.
    First off, it should be noted that this is most definitely a remake and not just an enhanced port. The DS version might have the same tracks but it's running on a completely different engine. The physics are completely different and as a result the vehicles all handle very differently from their N64 counterparts.
    While the N64 favored the lightweight characters, the DS game heavily favors Heavyweights.
    Character stats have changed a little too.
    While in the N64 game every character was unique, in the DS version there are a lot of clones. Notably, All three kongs drive handle exactly the same as each other, the only difference being visual.
    The two new playable characters are amazing, but kinda broken in multiplayer, both being just as fast fully upgraded characters while still in their base vehicles.
    You covered the sound differences pretty well but didn't touch on the graphical changes. Models tended to be higher poly in the DS version and everything in the game got brand new, more detailed and higher res textures.
    However the N64 version had more dynamic lighting. Driving under a green light would tint your character green for example. Going through a dark tunnel would cause your headlights and tail lights to turn on automatically. Sadly these little touches were missing from the DS version.
    The new stage 4 weapons were actually horribly overpowered in multiplayer. I'm going to guess you probably didn't get to try it while it was still online, but all anyone had to do was get the lead and a level 4 green balloon and the race was more or less theirs. those fake coins home in if you get close to them and you'd get 10 of them. They'd just place them on the zippers and make them completely unusable for anybody that followed them.
    The stage 4 magnet worked like Mario Kart's blue shell and you could guaranty getting it once per lap on most tracks.
    Finally, the biggest difference in multiplayer was that everybody has to use the same vehicle in the DS version while you could mix and match in the N64 version.
    This was presumably done because otherwise the online would have been dominated by people that just picked the plane every time, but it would have been nice if the option at least existed locally.

    I didn't like the DS version at all. I tried enjoying it, but the bad changes, like the gimmick boost and soulless music, and poor added content like the balloon touch challenge made the game feel like a poorly done cash in. And I believe the AI was dumbed down for the normal racers (although it could be the same AI but the overpowered weapon system changes made it way too easy), which made playing the single player feel pointless. They should have remade it for the Wii/GameCube instead but I believe Microsoft only made games for the GBA and DS because they weren't competing in the handheld market.

    A common complaint is that I'm showing a lot of nostalgia bias in this video however this is only coming from those who didn't listen to the conclusion. Did I not say that I don't completely hate the DS version because of nostalgia? If I apply nostalgia bias then I would be praising the DS version more for reminding me of the N64 version, something I felt in my youth. Playing both games as an adult opened me up to understanding why the original was great and why the remake was a train wreck. The whole point of this video was about not riding on nostalgia while making a remake. Also keep in mind that I do criticise the N64 version and point out positive changes in the DS version like not playing the tracks 3 times in each world.
    PS: I love both Ocarina of Time and its 3DS remake.

      The difference here is the presentation was done better on the original. Presentation is something that a lot of gamers would easily miss. @@ChiefMedicPururu I still don't see how Luigi's Mansion is a demake because it's still the same game despite a lower resolution. To me it's a remake in the same vein as Super Mario 64 DS. It isn't like _this_ where a chunk of the game was cut for gimmickfest 2004 (i.e. replacing the silver coin races with the balloon tapping bullshit) and some of the gameplay experience was at it's core altered in a negative way (i.e. having to rub the genie lamp with your stylus pen). Luigi's Mansion on the 3DS is more or less the same game with quite a few enhancements. There's the 3D which while it is a gimmick, it's not intrusive. They improved the hidden Mansion for US and Japanese players, they added a boss rush mode, they added a multiplayer mode (though tbf it is laggy as hell due to lack of optimization), they added portrait battle, they added platinum paintings, and they tweaked the gb horror. Like Super Mario 64 DS, the worse thing about the game is the controls but even then, for being a game designed for twin sticks it works find in most to all cases and if you absolutely must have that twin stick experience, the CPP is an option. I guarantee you if the 3DS version got ported directly to Switch exactly as (which means laggy multiplayer, 30fps, 240p, dual screens for display) is people wouldn't call it a demake. The only reason why people call it a demake is because of slight graphical downgrades to what was and still is a great experience, whether you play it on the 3DS or GameCube.

    This was really well done. One thing I could say, however, was when showing off music, is to show of the tracks from the music were from with the song name at the bottom of top of the screen.
    That being was, this was really well done! I'm interested in seeing what else you're going to cover in the future (SM64 v. SM64DS is a given).

    Hey hatwearinggamer, I have to say this is my first video I saw from you and I really enjoyed those 42 minutes. It must have took you a lot of time back then I can imagine, but I can tell, watching this was really.. "soothing"? I don't know. I just really liked it. I saw that you did the same "Original vs. Remake" for Super Mario 64 (DS) and I'll watch that too in the next few days. I really hope you're continuing this video series. Well done mate, well done. Man, I adore Diddy Kong Racing as a kid but I lost my in 64 and all my game sometime in the early 2000s. I got excited when I heard they were remaking it for DS. I felt a little deflated when I found out they removed banjo and conquer because I adored those characters. Hearing what else was wrong with the game now I'm kind of glad that I passed on the remake. I recently ordered an everdrive and just beat Diddy Kong Racing the other night, you just can't beat the original.

    I like the concept of the review but I feel there's already a strong bias immediately from the format of the video (Good to bad), granted the remake was underwhelming. It would be interesting to take two roads. Either keep the Good vs Bad and just focus on the main elements of the game (faster pace video, systematic). Or review the original and then changes of the game (variable format). Overall I was entertained by the video although I had to watch it in pieces because it was quite a long video. Can't wait to see the next VS.

    Interesting video, but I prefer the DS version. The extra features make the game for me. While characters like Banjo and Conker didn't make the cut, the features is what recover it for me. There was a lot nitpicking, which isn't bad, but it is pretty biased if you played the N64 version first. I tried the N64 version and I really love Conker, but I couldn't handle the dated framerate and the Adventure story was pretty long compared to the DS version. Not to mention the missing features. The music is pretty subjective as I prefer the DS remakes.
    Overall, I think the DS version is the definitive version over the N64. Sure it changed a few things, but they weren't bad. I think they changed for the better. Can't beat making custom tracks! I still find the 64 version fun, but I really can't deal with the framerate as it does hurts my eyes...

    • @lalas3590
      @lalas3590 Před rokem

      Necro-reply, but I agree as well. Both versions have their merits.
      One of the interesting parts about Nintendo first party games is even if they are remade/re-released, the newer version usually doesn't invalidate the original version.
      Something that the video never mentioned though is that with the DS,2DS and 3DS consoles being out of production, eventually people won't be able to experience the DS version in its original hardware which removes a lot of entertainment value (DS emulation is fully compatible with any title software-wise even by low-end devices, but the PHYSICAL dual screen layout can't be replicated). The N64 version on the other hand doesn't have any "special" hardware integrated in its gameplay and therefore doesn't have that issue.

    Has anyone in the ROM hacking community done anything with Diddy Kong Racing DS? Transporting the original music, the original key challenges, Taj's original voice, and Banjo and Conker complete with their original voices, eliminating most of the newer DS content and going for a N64 to DS port would make this probably better than the N64 version especially on a repro cart.

      CORRECTION: Blame Microsoft.
      Seriously, they bought Rare, and not only Banjo-Threeie turned into "Cars...CAAAAAARS?!?", but also why they couldn't add in Banjo and Conker (Both of them were by Rare, and since Rare was owned by Microsoft it wouldn't be possible, like Link not appearing in Soul Calibur 2 HD since it was released only for X360 and PS3, and Link was property from Nintendo, considering that he was only in the GC version), but only Conker had any reason to NOT be there even if Rare was not bought (Bad Fur Day), but that is only half the case.

    Great video, man. This was some quality stuff.
    I've got some suggestions, though so please don't take this the wrong way and I apologise before hand if I offend you.
    The audio levels need to be checked since there was times the music was too loud and others when I couldn't quite hear your voice so I had to constantly controlling the volume throughout the video.
    Another suggestion is more like a "you really should do this" kind of thing lol but this right here, this video...is what you should be doing. I was checking some of your older videos and none of them came even close to getting up to 200 views. This video alone got you more likes (556 so far and counting) than you ever got views on your other videos...plus...this one already has over 20k views. I'd say that if you really want to make this channel grow, you should definitely take a bit more time to make these kind of videos until your channel grows a bit more and maybe then start doing let's plays and walkthroughs. But I'd really suggest you focus almost exclusively on these kind of videos. There are already way too many let's play channels on CZcams but this is the first time I've seen such an in depth comparison/analysis of a game that was entertaining for 42 minutes straight.
    I know these videos can take up a lot of your time but, man...quality over quantity is always better and this was top quality.
    Keep it up, man. Really enjoyed this video and I hope to see more.
    Oh and, again, I'm sorry if I offended you in some way lol just my two cents.

    Yeah. I'm a BIGGER fan of the N64 version than the DS version. The intro of the N64 is more epic, the adventure mode is more fun to ride around in, the challenges are less for you to draw your own and more for you to battle your opponents in, the music has more meaning of having experience especially more fanfares depending on the position, and the characters are more OK with their own colors. All and all, the 64 version is LOTS better than the DS version.

    This was one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. I remember back when I was around 11 years old I wanted this game so badly so I could relive those classic moments, with the added bonus of being able to create your own custom tracks and change the color of your vehicle.
    I was hoping to make my own remakes of Mario Kart tracks and the like, and had over a hundred ideas running through my head about what tracks I would make, only to be met with that dream track garbage where all you do is draw a loop and you drive through an empty void.
    The color customization for your vehicle is just a color multiplier, and doesn't allow you to selectively color the body and stripes. I had ideas for personalizing my vehicle, and they were squashed by the lack of features.
    This game wasn't only bad, it was borderline deceptive. What it promised it gave the absolute bare minimum. If the game is crappy, fine (not fine), but when a developer promises something only to give the absolute bare minimum effort, that's is just sleazy.
    This remake is an absolute insult to the original. Removing that Pirate Lagoon theme was the straw that broke the camel's back. That was one of the best songs Rareware ever made and they replaced it with that monotone beach boogey crap.
    I know it sounds petty to complain about some old obscure DS game but I really looked forward to it. I think Diddy Kong Racing deserves a better remake. Would love to see one for the Switch.

    People should always improve the bad parts of a game (or anything in life really), not 'change something that is liked'. For example, the coin challenge should not require all coins but perhaps 7+ coins and first place. The extra boosters for Wizzpig are fine as well. The final boss more challenging seems fair though. Additional content is always welcome in the form of good special DK maps, Online play, map creation and fine-tuning bad parts are the only things that was required.
