JL SMOKEHOUSE BBQ - Welcome to Phoenix, Arizona, USA, and today weâre going to JL Smokehouse BBQ ( / jlsmokehouse ) where James Lewis serves amazing BBQ! He is so passionate and knowledgeable about barbecue and I canât wait for you to meet him in this video. Letâs go eat! #BBQ #Phoenix #Arizona
As soon as you enter JL Smokehouse you know itâs laid back and unique. JL as he calls himself, is the pitmaster, and knows his bbq. Although he offers brisket, chicken, sausages and an assortment of meats, his southern style bbq pork ribs and pulled pork are the true highlights and something you donât want to miss. âI have the best pulled pork in the country,â says Lewis, and when you see how the entire pork shoulder melts on the smoker, you know itâs special. Before serving it, they chop it up coarsely and then squeeze on a generous amount of their legendary bbq sauce.
I ordered the slugger combo plate, which included six different bbq meats and a few sides, plus I got an entire rack of pork ribs. JL showed me how he seasons the ribs with his own recipe dry rub, then smokes the ribs bone side down - never ever flipping them over. The pulled pork was indeed the best Iâve had, so smoky, so ultra tender and bursting with flavor when combined with the tangy bbq sauce. JL mentioned that he didnât like to classify his bbq into any US regions, but did mention that itâs influenced and similar to Memphis style bbq.
âPut Some South in Your Mouth!!â - JL Smokehouse!!
It was an amazing experience to hang out with JL for a few hours and learn about his process of BBQ and to eat an amazing BBQ meal. When youâre in Phoenix, Arizona, if you love food and BBQ, youâre not going to want to miss it.

Stopped by JL's a couple months ago after seeing this video and I must say the food was excellent. Everything was good... The pulled pork, ribs and pork belly was next level good and his homemade lemonade is the best lemonade I ever had. JL and his brother Kevin had a little extra time to conversate and these brothas were so down to earth and REAL - this is exactly how a restaurant should be run.. with Passion and Love!

The Guy JL is a BBQ artisan ....would love to go to his spot one day !
He so cold he can tell you how he do it and u still cant get it right!!!
JL is the man! He's absolutely right about the nature of regional BBQ. Too many dudes get into smoked meats like a hobby and run wild with amateur advice and their own cooked up bag of tricks, or get sucked into a regional style where they're trying to market their food, but JL is a professional and he knows good BBQ is good BBQ. You can take a little bit of recipe out of anyone's cookbook, combine it and make your own great BBQ with all the best elements and learning how to fix their deficiencies so that your BBQ doesn't suffer the dryness or lack of flavor that another pitmaster might suffer from.
This guy is not a chef, heâs a bbq scientist. đ„đ„

Plus he isn't lying. The pork is amazing. His collards and beans are A+. I live in Alabama, trust me.
He gave me the tour too! He is so nice and really spent a lot of time explaining to me how he built and designed his smoker himself. If you get a chance and you are in the area try Cocina Madrigal just down the road. Incredible Mexican cuisine.
