Caron Butler’s story is better. Man came out of Racine,( the hood ) was surronded by drug dealers his whole life and was selling cocaine at the age of 7 to support his mom and his aunties, learned the game of basketball everyday and stuck to it and his job at burger king. Caron was laughed at by his old gang member friends everyday at Burger king, because they made 10x more than him with less effort but he kept doing the right thing. Caron made it to the NBA, and helped rebuild Racine with rec centers, new schools, and making many donations to improve life there.
That's was up I like caron ,wish he got to play in the playoffs with the mavs.

I am and have always been a Gilbert fan. But with the hindsight of history, the locker room madness fell on his shoulders. Gilbert had enormous talent and an amazing flamboyant personality perfect for television and early social media. However, Gilbert never "grew up" as a professional athlete. Instead of maturing into a senior player whose sole motivation was to win a championship and motivate/terrorize his teammates to perform at the highest levels, Gilbert was still into childish pranks. Sure its funny and you get to laugh, but why be a player at the highest level if you do not want to win. Its unfair to compare player to Michael Jordan, but the Bulls players were more afraid of Mike then they were of Phil Jackson or the Bulls management. He Jordan demanded that they play at the highest level or find a new team. Gilbert had the talent to lead a team but not the maturity. What if he had taken an immature Javaris Crittenton under his wing to help the team get better, maybe a young woman would be alive and young man's life would not have been wasted. Talent brings responsibility, but unfortunately most are not up to the challenge.

What a sad story. This young man seemed to have both academic and athletic success, and threw it all away. For what? For the imagined "street cred" of being a SFN thug, instead of the respect he could have earned by being an upstanding citizen and a great basketball player?
How can we teach our children not to fall for peer pressure and the allure of the thug lifestyle? If we could do it, perhaps we would lose a lot fewer decent, upstanding young black men to SFN-dom. Lots of boys whose fathers aren't in the picture are desperately looking for an example to follow. How do we do a better job of setting examples for them to look up to, so they don't fall for the same b.s. that this young man did?
