To mark exactly 1 year after uploading my first video at Rufford Ford, I travelled back up to the ford to see what has happened to it since its closure last December. I heard that not much had happened, but did not expect it to look so abandoned and derelict. I discuss the impact that it has had on the local area, as well as the extreme costs the council has had to pay for its closure.
As well as all that, I meet up with @midlifecrisis101x to discuss its history, and get some information from a councillor about its potential future.

The minute it became infamous, it was doomed, the amount of ruined cars and lack of responsibility from both car drivers and spectators/locals meant it was always going to shut.
Adam's fanbase rapidly contributed to the downfall. "Lack of being sensible" is apt. Adam saw a local upcoming youtube oppertunity to boost his channel, and screwed other youtubers by it. Watching videos of the ford wasnt the problem, it was the idiots attracted to it by the Adam C "send it" mentality and pop-bang map crowd (No, your car is not a rally car and the backfire makes you look like a tool).
As one that has filmed there since the lifting of lockdown it’s dramatically changed over the past year before it shut. I’ve been coming here for my whole life and like with the rest of the people that say to me from all over the world it’s a real shame it’s closed but thankfully not forever or forgotten. People just need to drive responsibly through a Ford, especially with a 30 mph speed limit here with children everywhere. We would never encourage drivers to speed through at ridiculous speeds nor would we ever encourage people to drive into 3 1/2ft of flood water, we just record what happens, THAT IS IT!

How much would a couple of breeze blocks and a few metal plates to raise the road really cost the council?
I was somewhat entertained by the videos.. at first puzzled by why drivers would drive through such, then realised it is largely just out of ignorance - most people don't know an engine works, breathes or how and why water can damage engines.
But you know what.. you lot who spent time there, watching and making videos, could have instead tried harder to warn people not to drive through it. Perhaps produced some flyers. Encouraging it, as many of you did, was mean spirited.
Even at 1.5ft, at 30mph some cars would suffer damage.
As a Brazilian i discovered Rufford Ford videos last month, and i was amazed how Brits run very expansive car$ throught it, made me sad knowing it was closed a long time ago :( , i was planning to visit in my next stay on UK....so please, bring it back Brits!

Don’t forget the people don’t take responsibility as their cars are rented at 300-600 a month. Again they didn’t take responsibility for anything let alone their rented car, to buy a car they would never be able to afford, instead they just rented the most expensive they could not afford to make sure the joneses knew they were in fact richer then them 😂 then cause they don’t actually own the car and it’s everyone else’s fault they decide to drive said car through a flood to save 5 mins on their very special day cause they re the only person in the world that matters 😊

I live locally and been visiting for near on 18 years, used to always take my daughter to watch the cars splash then have a long walk round the abbey, it’s such a shame to see it closed as it used to be a really good day out. It’s like a ghost town most days now even around the rufford grounds, so we don’t bother going anymore. I have pictures from 15+ years ago of cars flooded there, people sat on the roofs of their car etc. It’s a typical knee jerk reaction by the local authorities, they’re the same with car meets etc, much stricter than other counties. I really do hope they open it back up.
I agree with you about the UK being much more strict than neighbouring countries. Tbh when I first stumbled across the vids of Rufford I remember thinking it would be a matter of time before it got closed. I don't blame people for getting content out of it, but once those vids went viral it was always going to end eventually.

It's important to note that this is NOT the council's decision. Under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, specifically s14(1)(b) the police identified the ford as presenting a real risk to both drivers and the public who were gathering to watch. The council were therefore required act to remove the risk so closed it while they looked into ways to permanently control the risk.
I am somewhat conflicted though. I did enjoy some of the content myself and I have always been fascinated by fords as a seemingly unique British phenomenon, but sometimes I did cringe at how fast people were driving through, how narrow it became with all the parked cars, and how many people (especially kids) were just milling about on the road. I think the problem comes back to the responsibility that influencers (and that term really does apply here) need to accept for the content they share. Just like the cars leaving shows who do silly things for the cameras, people were driving dangerously at the ford. This ford existed for decades without incident because there was no social media. Certainly people weren't travelling there JUST to send it through the ford a bunch of times. It's not a coincidence that shortly after this and other similar large channels started covering it, there was a swell of popularity, and then Tiktok got hold of it and it went nuts.
You just need to look at @midlifecrisis101x's videos over the last few years to see how the driving and crowd behaviour changed. To try and argue that it wasn't getting dangerous is patently ridiculous.
Of course, I'm not saying the people filming it are completely responsible for the closure or for the dangerous behaviour. But they are not completely free from responsibility either.
Maybe technology will develop far enough that some means for vehicles to one day pass over the water could be developed. Like a bridge.

Live about 15 minutes away and always used to come here as a kid. Easy solution, speed bump either side and reopen it. If the speed of idiots driving through it is what causes the safety concerns, that just about solves it, no?
I found the videos of people wrecking their cars to be quite amusing. I live in the northeast US and while we have some "unmaintained" roads that have water crossings, a maintained road like the ford would never be allowed. Even on the unmaintained roads, the states have a tendency to threaten enthusiasts with huge fines for damaging the environment, claiming that vehicles contaminate the water. I hope they find a solution that works for everyone.
I sell those concrete barriers and the red/white water filled barriers and the irony is it would have cost a fraction of that cost just to buy them outright. Off the top of my head the cones are about 5 quid a pop and the road closed sign about 15-20 quid
Probably more than that at council prices. They probably paid some firm owned by a family member to hire them and then they triple the price and hire them to the council.
They painted the lines on a roundabout near me (4 times) £15,000 every time they painted it... Main A road (dual carriageway) out of a City 1% turn left 25% turn right and the other 74% go straight ahead so what lines did they paint? Left lane is left turn only... MASSIVE queues and accidents daily as people used the left lane to go straight on and people not wanting to let them do it because they were angry having sat in a massive queue....

People driving like idiots for their 10 seconds of youtube fame would only be a matter of time till someone got hurt then everyone would be complaining the council didnt stop it
Concrete barriers may have been hired but from experence most councils have these taking into account they use them for highway schemes as for the red and white barriers they had them stored at rufford when it was flooded in the shed along with the signs so sadly think you figures are some what out. Do agree something needs to be done but really do they spend couple hundred grand on a long term solution to stop idiots driving through the ford in flood conditons or spend it on highway surface improvements. I know what i rather have.

The cost of doing something is going to be a lot more. The council, like all councils, are strapped for cash. They will have no incentive to fix a problem that stupid drivers have created. As for the businesses, maybe they should subsidise a solution.

There's a railway bridge close to us that's had "temporary" traffic lights on it. Those "temporary" lights have now been there for over six years and cost more than 200 thousand pounds.
If only councils reacted this quickly on things that actually mattered.

@@HowtoMakeThingswhere I live they just come out in a flatbed, spraypaint a yellow square around the potholes, get back in the van and then just drive off. Usually the van is full of council workers too. How f'ing much does that cost??!! They could just fix it, right??

I mean, like you said, they are usually in groups and have a couple vehicles to protect the 1 man with a spray can. It’s a joke. Fix the ucking potholes!!

Tell you what @AdamC3046 you’d make a great news reporter, great video mate that road should be open regardless wether it’s to help local businesses or for people to pass through to get where they did to go, that local council shouldn’t have to closed a road if it’s still useable for motorists to get through 👍

I’m amazed no one got killed. People were driving through that water at ridiculous speeds with kids running around. All the CZcams views brought people from mikes away to have a go.
Surely it wouldn't cost a lot to put a row of concrete pipes across and level it over with hardcore, bringing it nearer to the level of the pedestrian bridge? It would probably still be a ford at times, but a raised ford. I've seen a number of these around the country.

That's exactly what was done here where I live in West Devon: there were two fords on converging streams, which many years ago had concrete culverts laid in the stream beds, with concrete slabs over them. These have tarmac on top, and one winter a bad flood lifted one of them off...so could still drive over it. The road signs say "road liable to flooding, but it now very rarely does...
They should put a raised metal grid under it so cars can drive over it but at a slightly higher level but water can still flow

Just for clarification, the signs were locked shut because of clowns changing them from “road closed” to “open” the farmer put a fence up, because it’s his land that was being used as a public convenience (there was someone found deficating on there) and if you had just turned around when filming the “dumped wood” you would have seen they it had come from the new fence the Rufford mill had put up, no shops have closed because the ford has shut, 1 moved to a bigger premises in ollerton the other had a short term lease that ended, the space is now used for the brides to change in, and the route you took around from one end to the other, maybe if you actually went the recognised route and not one Carl had made up, it would have been easier and quicker.

Shame about the local businesses ending up closed and I get why people are annoyed by all the visitors to the ford and the entertainment it provided online.
The council could have put down speed humps on either side of the ford and resident parking only along the side of the road to deter people, I suppose.

A camera could be put there and maybe have a 10mph speed limit there to stop drivers bombing it through?
How is driving extra miles on the detour better for the environment? Surely the council should be reopening the route to allow farmers and residents to go about their day normally without having to use extra fuel and creating extra emissions?

The thing about these ford videos, and im not on about the time i lost my focus, is that whilst simple they tell you a lot in the moment, be it someone driving a expensive car and watching them get a tow and a debt to pay, or using a 208 as a boat, can partially show how good or bad a car can take on water, but most importantly how the typical driver will act in the scenario, and the more people that see that the more people learn from others, alas, some do not.
Also i find it rather important to document fords as they change depending on the weather, if you need to go a route past them then its nice to have an idea of what you may come across, assessing the danger to yourself and what you personally drive, and they are just quite scenic overall.

I'd imagine that would cost millions. Our local council put in a similar sized bridge here and it was £2.4m
They shouldn't have to fork out that much money just to make a pissy wedding venue happy, especially at the cost of other people like the farmers that need to double their journey length, the businesses that have closed, etc.

Don’t also forget the cost of the traffic management ie diversions road closed road ahead closed .. the will easily cost way more than than the concrete/ plastic blocks
Easy to blame others, but the truth is those who glorify stupid driving have made a considerable contribution to the current situation. Having visited it in May 23 it’s easy to understand why local residents and authorities took the action they did. Love car, can’t be doing with some of the associated behaviour.

I live down the road from the ford. I used to love driving my Nissan Pathfinder through the water, very slowly and waving at the children. For anyone wanting a lovely picnic or a grand day out, the Abbey and lake is simply gorgeous!

It would help if they could do a 2 gate system of some sort, one opens while the other is shut so you cant just speed down through but I doubt they would employ someone to monitor the gates opening and closing.

we have a similar situation with a pontoon bridge (I don't know how old it is, but it survived WWII compared to its Po River counterparts) and the complaints that follow, they are "fixing" it using sheet metal (basically like give a rope to someone who wants to commit suicide) which cause more problems than the thin wooden planks used to replace the original oak planks. There are solutions, but no real and functional agreements are ever found (such as building a bridge similar to the pedestrian one present there for the ford)

The answer is pretty simple in my mind. Either side of the ford install a kerbed slalom, which can't be driven through quickly. Give one side priority over the other, so only one vehicle at one time can be going through it.
It’s now open. Someone uploaded a video 7 hours ago and they moved the concrete barriers to only let 1 car thru. It’s by Jack sparrow called “latest fail at Rufford ford” on CZcams
The local farmer illegally moved the barriers, they are now back in place at more council cost.

I personally think speed bumps are kind of usless as cars traveling on wet roads hitting speed bumps is dangerous and you know the 4x4,s won't slow down .
It's embarrassing how useless the local governments can be .

Actually it was the police, if you want to blame someone. They forced the closure under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, specifically s14(1)(b) because "of a significant risk to public safety". The council legally had to take steps to mitigate the risk and the barriers are there while the find a permanent solution.

I've heard local farmers are annoyed at the closure as it takes a lot longer for their machinery to go around. You saying the detour goes through a residential area explains it, a lot of the tractors and trailers wont fit down them so they have to take an even longer detour. So, possibly a couple shops have closed because of the road closure and for sure it is costing farmers more time and that literally translates to money for them so its costing farmers even more when they are already struggling so hard often making under minimum wage

Goes on all National Highways have some venerable parapets on the M5 when I was on the framework I recommended buying the VRS and TM as hire was 6-10k per unit and they had in 9 in the SW. They have must have spent a fortune as there are no plans to replace the parapits. However Temp Vehicle Restraints Systems for motorways are very specialist and if you buy them you need to have staff training to install and remove them so hire seems the only option but 4 years and counting!
Its common to hire even when they have no idea of the periods, its for short term use!!!!!

It seems to me that frequently the local councils solution to road problems is to just close the road. Near where I live last winter instead of salting the more rural roads round where I live, they just closed them all which meant my 20 minute drive to work became 50 minutes. I'm sure if they just put in some rubber speed bumps straight away, they'd end up paying no more than the cost of hiring the bollards.

I guess it's some crazy English tradition to drive like that... where I come from, we would build a bridge over the water-course. A bridge could be in place in about 1 week or less, made from concrete pre-cast segments. The Audi's are usually the most painfully entertaining to watch because the cost of a new engine... OMFG!
From what I've seen, the primary culprits contributing to it's closure are the idiots in 4x4 vehicles creating havoc by driving at speed through the ford. Although the 4x4 drivers are only a small proportion of those using the ford, the cost to locals and businesses is horrendous. I do hope a solution is found to open the ford soon.
£10k is a bargain vs the cost of policing, insurance claims, etc. You can guarantee that the first serious incident the council would get ripped apart and the "influencers" would be nowhere to be seen

I can understand closing the road during the heavy rain months in winter but in the summer it seems crazy to keep it closed.

If they placed a raised perforated surface across the ford, it could prevent the need to ford the deep water. You'd still drive through water but not as deep to cause issues. The novelty of driving through a ford remains, the viral interest would diminish and the local life can return to normal.😊
Land owners can't just just errect barbed where ever they want, it comes with rules and restrictions. Google is your friend here. . . . .Barbed wire or razor wire located within 2.4 metres of highways is considered a nuisance and potential risk and local authorities can issue notices for it to be removed. And this . . . . .Police forces advise against the use of barbed wire to protect residential buildings as the householder is likely to be liable for any injuries or damage caused if a trespasser or burglar attempted to break in. They recommend considering alternative, safe perimeter security precautions. Thanks Adam 👍

What is the case for putting in a very low 'bridge' about the level of the footway? The river is not a navigation with boat traffic. The Army could have built a Bailey Bridge as an exercise (tho' not quite so pretty ).

Presumably the cheapest way to "fix" it would be to raise the road level with various aggregates and whatnot, but I guess they would still need to somehow stem the water flow whilst working on it, not sure that's doable.
I was thinking the same thing. They would probably have to construct a new bridge structure. The ancient romans made some excellent arch bridges, i'm sure it could be done now.
Exactly, how do they build bridges in large rivers? It is possible.
Lay large concrete pipes for the water to flow through, and then cover them (conduits). This would also create problems of flooding upstream as the water flow is now restricted. No doubt the EA would be scrutinising the solutions for additional flood risk.
If they wanted to keep the road open they could raise the road. But they barely look after the roads we have currently so doubt it.
Problem is.....most "MODERN DAY DRIVERS WONT EVEN KNOW WHAT A FORD IS"

Why don't they just build a small road bridge over the water, like the walkway...and have arches underneath for the water to run through?
