Let me guess, the car you just bought; was either black, white or grey, right? Well, guess what, even if you wanted a blue, yellow, or green car, you couldn't even get one. And that's because dealers and manufacturers don't want you to. America Got Scammed Into Buying Gray Cars and both new car sales and used car sales are skewed because of dealership and auto manufacturer BS.

I bought a new GTI and the dealer didn't want to find me one in metallic red... I told them I would take my money elsewhere and when they didn't want to find me one, I went to a dealer 1200 miles away and had my car shipped... I now have a GTI in metallic Red.
You should go to that dealer again and show them your new car!
@@lecoureurdesbois86 took I for service and the guys in back were pretty stoked about it
You and me are quite similar. I was adamant that my 1989 corvette convertible be a white exterior with a red interior. Truly a 80's Miami combo. Snow & blood.
The only one for sale in the country was 1100 miles away and I bought a one way ticket and brought thousands in cash. Drove it back home one way the same day.
1989 because its the last year with the 80's interior, and the first year with the bulletproof German ZF 6 speed. Convertible because I like them and also it has an x-brace under the car for rigidity. Still have the car and she drives like a dream.
Heck yeah, that's a great color on a GTI.
In Europe, it’s quite common to order a car and wait for the manufacturing. There are more colors everywhere. Most gray, black and white cars are business cars
While its more common, the majority is still white/silver/gray/black. The color offerings by most manufacturers are usually 50 shades of gray with one dark blue and red. I gotta give props to Peugeot, they have some really interesting colors one some models. But their cars suck in other ways sadly...
I concur. Here in Poland since last few years cars are either company car or leased with full intent of swaping it for another. Speaking very broadly, white is considered "business" color and on car forums there are plenty of jokes about this. Grey and black would be considered "timeless" and in case of silver it has the benefit of hiding dirt and grime to some extent as road crap usually dries to grey'ish hue.
I am from Europe, where are this colors?))))
I see like 85% of cars in Gray, black or white
Same in New Zealand
Same thing in France. Worse still, the color charts for models sold in this country are even more colorful in Germany, for example. So, colored cars are imports... A sad record.
I've caught myself sitting on a bench on the side of the road counting all the grey, white, black, and silver cars that pass - easily reaching into the 30s within a couple minutes - as well as looking around stopped at a light with 12 other cars to realize I am literally the only one with an actual color. It's depressing.
clever way to pass time, maybe I should try doing this next time I'm stuck in traffic. anyhow, yeah it's pretty depressing the number of monochrome cars on the road that even I sometimes forget that there's so many of them on the streets
A lot of people don't want cars in these dreary colors but buy them anyways because any color detracting from the current norm is considered risky for resale value. Same reason why so many drive around in SUVs/crossovers when they'd prefer something else, its what keeps their investment the safest.
@@narki86 I mean, as far as investments go, buying a new car is one of the worst ones you can make, considering the almost guaranteed 15-30% loss you'll experience in the first year. I don't doubt that's part of the reason, but it's hardly a sound investment strategy to begin with, so it's kind of funny to imagine anyone caring about the marginal gains they may hedge against their massive losses by going for a more 'resale friendly' color option. But people are people and it seems they'll do a lot to justify a purchase of something they really want.
But anyone doing that is...well, I would say 'putting lipstick on a pig', but in fact, they're actually removing lipstick from the pig because no one wants to buy a pig with lipstick XD
I usually count every car at a given intersection, once a day. Often, I count 10 non-colored cars, before I see an actual color worth looking at. As long as you chose a color, I don't mind which one, I'll praise anybody these days just for choosing a color! That said (and yes its opinion), I think its pretty clear that blue is the best color.
I've been doing that lately since I've started driving for work. Everything where I live is either white, black, or some shade of grey with the occasional blues and reds. That's why I appreciate custom paint jobs even if that color wouldn't be for me, I still appreciate the visual variety. I especially appreciate when people get colors that remind me of colors I remember as a kid, or even hot wheel colors I had as a kid. Things like racing green, orange, or tan.
Cars are just so just so dull today, we need more colors
Edit: Thanks everyone
Well it's like in the case with the bright green Huracan going over 150 some center State of the country... easily spotted from the chopper...
The driver learned his lesson and wrapped it in some grey... becoming significantly more successful at not going to jail.

Car colours on today makes the car more look like sad asf
Yep.. that is true. But that's mostly because for most people cars are just tools. The sad part is people that buy cars for entertainment and get them in some boring colors. Though for me, I wanted a Camaro and got it in Satin Steel, and could have possibly picked a different color if it would have been in a Satin looking finish. The Satin Steel looks so great in the cloudy days. Makes the design of the car look great.

Same year, my brother in law wanted to wrap his silver Benz, and I steered him into a nice satin purple, instead of the usual grey black... then I only got blue color cars...
@@MaverickPhantom Got it! 👍
I never realized that before, but right after I watched this video, I started to observe the cars driving by my house for a minute, and more than half of them were grey😂

Really? Where the fuck have you been for the past 20 years buddy?
it's true. It's hard to find good colors. Some carmakers don't offer any bright colors on any cars. It's sad.
@@DroneStrike1776 Gray --- the color of more manufacturers profit.
Now look for motorcycles, truth is if you look for it you will notice it more
You hit the nail on the head, it's the feedback loop of the manufacturers and dealerships. They think those are the best colors because they sell the best, then therfore only get those colors, which inevitably makes everyone only able to buy those colors, which then artificially proves their point of them being better sellers.
Take the ultra high end brands Bentley and Aston Martin. Their cars have over a hundred different beautiful colors to choose from (inside and out), and what are at all the dealerships? Black on black, white on black, and gray on black. Boring!
I've custom ordered my last two cars because dealership lots never have the options I want and definitely never have the color combo I want.
Custom order is the only way to get your car spec the way you want it. Unfortunately it takes longer to get one post Covid.
Peugeot made the default color for their newest hatchback a shade of yellow I really like

DUDE! I COULD HAVE SWORE I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO'S NOTICED THIS! I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS THAT EVERY CAR ON THE ROAD IS EITHER BLACK WHITE SILVER!
It's been like that since the iphone came out. Apple pushed the metal shade colors into something that represented luxury, that's why most home interior is now light grey, most cars is a shade of grey, most phones, most laptops and higher end TVs have metal looking bezzles.
It aint only cars, its clothing, houses exterior and interior, and other products like phones. We need color damnit, I'm all about that color.
I got my first car about a year ago, and it's gold. 2008 Scion xB in the Gold Rush color. everyone waves to me, I've had kids ask me to do burnouts not knowing it's basically a corolla, and most of all, it stands out. My friends know exactly who is behind that wheel, and it's so sad to see cars lose that bright, fun, standoutish characteristic.
Funny story: My current car is white. My last car was red. I bought my white car bc I didn't want any eye-catching attention for police (I like to drive fast). So I deliberately opted for the white even though I wanted red again. I never got a single ticket in the old red car. Got one for speeding in the white car last year🤣🤣 It's my fault for sure, but I figured I'd share for a laugh!

New asphalt is black of course, as it ages it turns grey.

Black and especially gray cars blend into the pavement.

Let’s not forget about all the sick colors on the new TRD Tacoma’s, Tundra’s, Sequoia’s, and 4Runner’s
Oh yeah, finally some colors that look more entertaining
Till you get to that lot, and all they have is gray, black, white, and silver unless you buy the most expensive one on the showroom floor that is overpriced and it might be a pastel gray too.
Just got a 2024 TRD Sport 4x4 Tacoma with a "Blue Crush Metallic" coat. Oh and it has a manual transmission too. Love it!
in italy there's a "game" called macchina gialla (the yellow car) that is basically when you see a yellow car you shout it and you punch the arm of someone next to you, and this to emphasize how rare it is a yellow car
In Brazil, this is with the blue Beetle
Pois é!!! Só que agora ficou difícil encontrar Fuscas de qualquer cor!!
Not sure if about the rest of North America but I grew up on the Canadian prairies in the 70's and we had version of that called "Punch Buggy" where you would get to punch your sibling or cousin in the arm if you were the first to spot a VW Beetle in whatever colour it was.

I work at an independent car dealership and every car we get from auction is, yup, gray, silver, black, or especially white. My enthusiasm goes sky high when we get an orange one, which I lovingly call "orangeade"
I love how all carmakers. Have a "build and price" feature on their websites. SO you can custom build your car. Yet they don't actual allow you to get the car you built.
I tried replacing my 14 year old Tacoma that got totaled this winter. All the Toyota dealerships that I contacted said that if I wanted anything other than what was being allocated to dealers by the manufacturer (read: if I place an order for what I want,) I will be waiting months and months, as they're building them in batches, and all the popular non-colors are coming first. I could get anything I wanted in black/grey/silver, but nothing in blue/orange/red. I ended up buying something else entirely, used, in red. I'll look at new vehicles again when they offer actual colors on more than just the website.
I want a factory purple car
Didn’t one of the recent BMW M2s do that? I’ve seen a few by me, they sure know how to make a nice looking dark color.
You could do that in the 60's. You could buy a Dodge Challenger in the 60's with the color "Plum Crazy," a factory purple color
@AbandonedRaven yep beautiful color... but too bad it wasn't OK previous M2.
@strawberrymilk9767 that was nice.. and you could even get Panther Pink... also until Jeep got the Bikini Blue (I think it's a blue, more of a teal), good luck with finding Teal on an affordable car. I LOVE BRIGHT YELLOW CARS
I think a lot of the US market uses grayscale for average cars, and saves the color options for their more fun or interesting cars. Look at Ford for example: an escape’s color options outside of grayscale are only red and a muted blue; but you can get Broncos in green, yellow, multiple shades of red, multiple shades of blue and orange.
Same for F150s as well they have almost 20 choices some different shades of the same color however yellow is left out of that one.
Sadly, I see no shortage of fun or interesting cars in dull, boring colors.
Yep, and even though I loathe Suburu, I'll credit them all day long for their blue, orange, and yellow, and thank the folks who drive them!
Im the guy who show up to work in a red mazda hatchback with shiny wheels. Option red cost extra when buy new, so i went for a second hand option with 8000 miles. Cheaper in every way compared to buying new. But took me 3 months to find that red.
I may be part of a small percentage because I've owned 2 blue minivans, a red 4Runner, a green Subaru, and green pickup trucks. I've only had 2 cars in white or black. What I truly miss is interior color options. The royale blue, red wine, purple. The interior color options have completely disappeared, just beige, gray, and black.
Except some Japanese cars, theyre still doing red, blue, white, etc.
Yes agreed about interior colors. The things i loved about my hubs 135 i that had a black exterior, it had that beautiful red interior. Also, my white 1979 mustang had cyan blue and black houndstooth seats, it was beautiful. I wish they would bring back houndstooth or plaid interiors if you end up stuck with cloth seats because you can’t get leather.
My son and I just spent a month car shopping for him. Toyota lost a sale because of this no-color, no-orders approach. They couldn’t find a red one with his preferred options. We (he) ended up with a red pepper metallic tintcoat Bronco Sport.
I've had a red car, I now have a blue car. I don't mind gray or silver cars though. Some colors could be too bright and not look right whereas gray and silver might be dull, they are neutral colors that most people can tolerate
I'm the opposite, I don't really mind black or white but i absolutely hate gray/silver cars with some exceptions

Not just the exterior but the interior as well. I rented a Nissan Altima a few years ago and it had a touchscreen that jutted out from the dashboard. I see a Toyota Camry in the parking lot at my job and it has that same touchscreen sticking out of the dashboard.
Hi mate, I live in Australia and it is much the same here. I bought a silver Lexus myself years ago and to be honest it almost always looks clean. I think that is why people go for those sorts of colors as they rarely look like they are in need of a wash. Also if you get a car with a red leather interior it looks awesome and matches the silver exterior so well anyway.
Lexus call the color of my car ‘Titanium’ but I think in the USA they call it ‘Sonic Silver’ but it is silver and can almost look slightly green under certain light.
Just my take on it but white is cheaper and was often sold as discounted fleet cars making them very popular . Black was difficult to keep clean and shiny Colors often faded in the got Aussie sun, especially red.
Plus if you speak to many panel beaters they will tell you that certain Colors are a pain the arse to match properly after a crash if they require a respray.
For the record metallic Blue and metallic red cars have started make a comeback over here though.
It could be different in the USA but that was the main driving factor here no pun intended.
As a side note we actually spell colour with a u I just left it as the American spelling for context.
More people consider car just as a commuter. Nevertheless, I think if you gave them more options full of vibrant colors, they would maybe choose a Color more often. But only if its the same price, since spending fortune on cars isnt in fashion today (for most people). Just my HO.
A car is only considered "just a commuter" because all the soul has been forcefully removed from them. If cars were more colorful and bright, I think a lot of people would see them more as methods of self expression

She refused to let her insurance company total it and took it home to fix on her own dime because she loved it. It was more than a vehicle to her. One day, I asked her what she was driving and she bought a Altima and described it as "just a car'
There are way too many "Just a cars" being presented for purchase these days. And they are overdesigned, way overpriced and not reliable anymore.

Your comment about yellow, having the lowest depreciation doesn’t really mean much of anything if you stop and think about it. Just exactly what kind of cars come in yellow? It would be generally sports cars, and those tend to hold their value better. So this is how somebody can easily lie with statistics. It’s technically true that yellow cars hold their value better but if you buy a mainstream car in yellow, you will probably find out nobody wants it when you want to trade it in. I also don’t think the current color palette is really a plot for the car makers to save money. Have you been to a furniture store like Crate&Barrel lately. There’s no color in the store. Everything is monochromatic. It’s not to save money. It’s just what the current style is. Even the exterior colors on homes are grays and whites and blacks. Home Depot charges you the same price for any color of paint that you want, so it’s not because it’s cheaper . Eventually things will turn and color will make a comeback.
I was just thinking this the other day. I was wondering why the cars are all the same color. It’s all the same variation of black, gray, white.
Well said. I am so glad I have bucked the trend. My first new car was metallic purple or "plum" and both of my current cars are metallic blue and one is 2 tone with a white top. If I am going to be paying for a car with my hard earned money, I want it to have some color.

I hate when a car comes in five different shades of gray yet not a single cool color
When I get a scratch or chip (or rust spot), I want to be able to go to the store, pick up a can of Gloss 'Rust Check' spray paint and spray it onto the car's paint, instantly matching the paint on the vehicle, and stopping all rust from forming. This can only be done with the colors 'Black' and 'White' (mostly). All other colors, especially silver, are nearly impossible to get to paint-match perfectly from a simple selection of spray cans in a hardware store. 'Clear' goes with everything.

I've seen a resurgence of colours in Norway at least.
Especially a lot of yellow, green, red, purple etc for cars like the peugeot 208, but also other ones.
I live in Norway, here the other day I was at the store and 13 cars was parked there. All the cars was white, gray and black...
I'd also add, it's because of the rise of BMW and Mercedes becoming aspirational products in the late 80's and all through the 90's. They advertised their cars mainly in silver and gray, and were originally bought by businesses wanting sober colors. Other manufacturers followed their lead, trying to make their cars more "premium". That legacy lives on!

The rest of the colors offered on the Miata are boring beiges and shades of grey.
For safety’s sake, in a sea of SUVs a small car like the MX-5 should stand out, not blend into the pavement.
@@ScottALaFollette Oddly enough when the CX-5 was first marketing, all ads featured the Soul Red, beautiful color to me. Yet most cx-5 I saw were either gray, black or occasionally the really dark gray blue never that Soul Red. I love it in white too.
@@ReadyFreddie5523 It’s a fact that Soul Red Crystal costs extra, probably because the pigment costs the manufacturer extra.
It’s a shame to have to pay extra for a certain color on any new car.
I suspect many new buyers, because of the extra cost, compromise and settle for another shade of gray or beige.
every car on the road also looks exactly the same, sad that nobody ever wants purple cars cuz they look sick
All cars looked the same at one point or an other 1930, 40, unoqe 50's then back to same look.
Purple is nice but I like violet color 🌹
My sister had a purple mustang gt manual convertable
my favorite color is green for cars, glad i have a dark green car. its from the 90's which makes sense why its green.
I had that uk racing green bmw x5 and it was a cool color. I concur. I would have rather had black interior but for that year that tan was all the rage.
These are the colors most people want. I don’t know why, but it is. I worked at GM dealers as a tech for many years. We did keep an inventory of other colors; gold, blue, green, orange, red. The green, blue, and orange vehicles would sit on the lot, sometimes as long as six months. Black, white, and silver were like a revolving door. So, that is what we stocked most of. That trend started around the year 2000. The popular color in the 1990s was Metallic Polo green, at least on the Cadillacs. Teal for the other divisions.
Mfgs build what people are buying. At the moment, that is black, white or silver crossovers and suvs. At some point, that trend will change.
I was ridiculed at a Mazda dealership for saying a black interior MX-5 wouldn't be my choice 🙄 I'm over 50 and was told I wasn't mature enough for Mazda's 'sophisticated' colours 😂
Grey cars don't show dirt as much.
neither do metallic yellow ones lol
@bk2721 that's what happend to me
No white, just a darker shade of white. You really don't notice the dirt. Black is the worst, ten minutes after washing it, you can see the dust.
my uncle owns a bright yellow rivian and when we drive down a street all eyes follow the truck 🤣
I was just talking about this with my husband recently. He is looking to buy a classic Mustang. I was amazed at how many colors there were! I found a site that listed the colors produced from 1965-1970 and there were 15-20 different colors to choose from each year. Several shades of blues, blue-greens, and greens, as well as yellows, red, orange, gold, bronze. There was so much color to choose from just for Mustangs alone. Other makes and models offered the same range of colors
The roads must have looked amazing in the 1960s!
This explains a lot. I've been working in a car factory fpr years and have complained about this for years, all the interesting colours have disappeared. We used to joke about 50 shades of grey and that after 6 months this new car finally comes in a colour that isn't grey and it is... brown... And the times it does come in colour it isn't nearly as green as you'd expect, it is grey metallic with a hint of green, blue or red...
Bought my first car in a nice bright blue, which was discontinued by the time I wanted my second one. Ended up with a grey one despite telling myself I would never buy q grey car because... well it was what was available, I had to pick between plain white, plain black and a grey that was at least metallic and had some nice red accents.
If I ever do get another car, it's damn sure going to be red or blue, or hopefully there will be more colour options by then.
I was told as a kid that colorful cars came with way more expensive insurance, it's just never felt financially practical to get one
Yeah we were all told that... any of these awesome colors are harder to match after an accident... but then again so is silver. Could be more expensive to fix, but then I would repaint the entire car or find same color panels from a car recycling place... the issue is the rear quarter panel... that I would just paint the entire car....
Just a myth! Insurance companies have much more detailed systems than color to calculate premiums.
@@albonfilms indeed it was debunked, but too late for all the non-car people.
Gray and Black and white aren’t colors
This video made me want to paint my silver 2002 Cougar. Maybe Grabber Blue is in it's future.
Yes I'm the person who walked into the new car dealer wanted the yellow car option & when they said they couldn't supply it walked out travelled 800km to another dealer & got the yellow car.I hate grey, white & black even in house styles like curtains, carpets, tiles, benchtops & wall colors.Just won't buy it if it has no color.
this is why i buy cars that standout
If you are not in the financial market space right now, you are making a huge mistake. I understand that it could be due to ignorance but if you want to make your money work for you...prevent inflation

I miss having the leftover VW bugs from the 60s still around, that were painted all sorts of crazy ways.
Giving me a reason to respray my car San Remo Red. A long time ago someone showed me a picture of an intersection and asked "what is wrong with this picture?" I Said "every car is white" they said "No the traffic lights are all on, every single one of them". this was a 4 lane intersection seeing three of the routes completely and every single car was white.
Why did I see "gray" as gay?
Maybe because it is
my first car was a z31, black, but with a little gold pinstripe running the length of each side, I thought it was the pinnacle of class
When Henry Ford started making cars, he said, "You can have any color you want as long as it's black."
I love showing up to the office in my Neptune Blue GR86. After owning way to many white or black cars the wild blue was just what I needed!
I've been saying this for years
A) it is slightly depressing, and boring
B) it makes cars more dangerous since they're harder to see against tarmac background
It's because people think they look richer in grey or black, or dont want to stand out. They also worry unduly about resell value. Also, the cost of some of the better paint options is insane.
Hey man I got 2 yellow vehicles and 1 red one. The dullest car I own is gold and it used to be a lot brighter when it was new.
I have noticed this for over a decade, its is severely depressing, not just the cars but everything is going like this. Cities now are grey cars in a sea of glass, steel and concrete. The entire world has been in a style depression for the past 30-40 years. It really effects my ongoing mentality and view of the world, there is no hope left.
The same can be said for the interior of people's homes. Gray floors, white walls, gray or cream colored couches, white or gray drapes. Every refrigerator is the same stainless steel, with most everyone having the same countertops and the same chosen range of colors in all appliances.
Speaking from Europe: you can easily set up your car on the website, save the setup and give it to the dealer, then wait a few months for manufacturing. That's what I did. I chose dark gray because such a nuance deviates less as the car ages. I had some parts repainted over the years and it looks seamless.
I've been saying that going out driving it seems like I'm driving around in a black and white movie, I for one refuse to drive a car in a boring depressing color.
My Ridgeline is called "sonic gray" it's more of a pastel blue, I like it, they only had 3 colors and 3 trucks to choose from, black, white or sonic gray, if they had a real blue I would of picked that.
I just bought a gray Silverado I'm using for kayaking / camping. I like the way it blends in if I decide to do some stealth camping.
Being colorblind, I put a lower priority on color choice, as you'd imagine.
Also, I did spend time in Japan.
Not only that but they actually charge more money if you want colors others than gray.
Cars camouflaged the same colour as the road should not be allowed. Better than forcing us to have our sidelights permanently on.
There are entire neighborhoods where all homes are brand new and large, all white exterior with the same black roofs. The conformity is astounding and it's not like the builders using the exact same materials to save costs gets passed on to buyers.
I absolutely LOVE my Release Series 1.0 FRS. Yellow is such a fun color, and really stands out in our modern sea of depression gray. And it didn't cost me over a quarter of a million dollars like a Paint to Sample GT3.
This video is right on point! I am so sick and tired of seeing black, gray, and white cars. Either People just simply don’t have any imagination, or the Automakers shoved it down our throats (more money for them) just like they did SUVs.
I just recently got a brand new 2024 kia forte lxs in metallic deep sea blue. The dealer said that they only have a gray and white one available. I said that I want a blue forte and if I need to im gonna go somewhere else and I did find one, upon informing the dealer they bent over backwards to get me a blue forte. Dropped 4K off the car and they ended up traveling 5 hours one way to pick up a blue forte. I'm now happily driving my blue forte.
My vehicle colors through the years: White, Beige, Silver, Silver, Red, Blue, Grey. Years of said vehicles: 90, 02, 05, 07, 99, 22, 24; Conditions: Used, Cert Preowned, New, New, Used, Cert Preowned, Cert Preowned. Every one of these vehicles has been a case of getting what's available, and decently priced, within a 200 mile area from my home on various lots. (Yes, 200 miles.) We were very lucky to find the Blue one, then someone totaled it in a head-only collision.
The video covers it best: We end up with what's available.
An additional shout out to the people who develop automotive paint. Back in the 1970s, I bought a Mustang II with a light blue paint. The paint was shot after 7 years. Now you see cars that have great factory paint jobs that are so old that the undersides have rusted completely out.
I've been saying this for years. I just figured that all auto manufacturers got together and decided that it's cheaper to stock 5 colors of paint than 10-12 and then rephrased the Henry Ford quote to "You can have a car in any color you want as long as it's a shade, and maybe blue or red."
Ha, jokes on you, I don't buy from dealerships all the vehicles I've gotten have been private sales. Mainly because I can't afford dealership cars.
If I remember correctly, that whole silver / gray / chrome thing became popular around the end of the millennium became chrome was supposed to be the color of the future.
But the future is now, but we're still driving chrome colors 25 years later like it's still 1999 😅
I noticed this for the last few years and no one seemed to be talking about it until now. I would love to drive a yellow or orange car. I once had a red Cadillac. I hope that this trend changes. Thank you.
Lol I was just noticing this my wife and I where having lunch at here job watching cars passed I made joke of out living in gta cause there nothing but Grey black white cars literally back to back one right after the other
