One of my favorite stories about Rocky came from Archie Moore. After his fight with Marciano, Archie was asked when he realized he was in trouble. His response was “in the first round”. The interviewer mentioned that since Archie knocked Rocky down in the first round how could he know he was in trouble? Archie said, “I hit him harder than I ever hit any man, and he got up mad”.

That victory over Valdez coupled with the running of his mouth saying he could beat Rocky earned him a title shot

When I was a youngster, I asked my Dad who his favorite fighter was of all time. Without hesitation, he said ROCKY! I asked why and he said, "Son, when I was in Korea, I saved all my money every time Rocky fought and I bet it all on him no matter what. Every penny. I would stay in the barracks that weekend and wait for the result. He never failed me. How can he not be my favorite fighter, son?" Right again, Dad :)

The Great authentic Heavyweight Larry Holmes referred to little Rocco padding his record by fighting his brother Peter Marchegiano on at least 3 or 4 occasions so as to boost his record, his brother fought under alias names ..this has also been mentioned in various books. Marchegiano's 49-0 record is FLAWED.

It's a water cooled fuel injected v twin with overhead cam and 4 valves per cylinder, it has 13.5 : 1 compression ratio, pumps out a little over 100 ponies and does 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. It taks a man to ride this bike, that's why I just sold it. Had to. My Mexican American wife Mexicali Margot made me. She's right because i only weigh a very skinny 137 pounds and have never riden a motorcycle. I also had to sell all my clothes, shoes, and my terrific collection of cigarette butts. But that's what my wife Margot wanted. And I do anything for her. Maybe little white Rocky could have beaten that circus clown Jess Willard who was paraded around for 4 years without a single fight. Or maybe he could have even beat that other circus clown Primo Carnera who was daily alcoholic (like Andre the Giant) and 100% mafioso controlled. The ‘ambling alp’ was an awful boxer with gigantism or acromegaly (like Andre the Giant). He was promoted as a monster because of his size, but he was really clumsy and couldn`t punch with his full weight, he was completely exposed by Joe Louis who easily battered Primo into submission.

Little white 184 lb Marciano had a featherweight arm reach of 67" inches. Imagine penguin🐧arms Rocky trying to fight authentic Super Heavyweights with 50 to 80+ pound weight advantages and 80" to 85" arm reaches? What an embarrassment Rocky would have been today.
The less said about 254 lb Humphrey Jackson the better. He only had 7 fights as a pro and had found a way to be KO'd by a guy with 1 fight. So this was little white Rocky's so called authentic Heavyweight opponent he faced? Another Typical Undercard C-Level
Factually Marciano would bust a payphone clean off the wall just to retrieve his 10 cents even though he had 30K in his pocket. He was half a bubble off plumb. It's in his biographies.

Joe Louis's speed power and precision between 1935-1942 would of wrecked Rocky.
People shouldn't judge Louis in 1951, 15 years after he destroyed Max Baer, king Lewinsky, Primo Carnera and other capable fighters.
Louis was a killer, ring terror, in his prime which was not the 1950s.

@@studentofsweetscience6922 Ali went toe to toe with Liston and got a TKO within a round... he may have an 84 inch reach but that's at most 4 inches more than the reach of someone Marciano paralysed, for Marciano's style all that reach does is mean he has to move across more ground increasing the power of his punches, it means when he's on the inside Liston can't respond as his arms are too long. Does this mean an automatic win for Marciano no, but reach is the wrong thing to bring up in Liston vs Marciano.

Marciano never slowed down, either. He moved with the same intensity in the last round as he did in the first. Incredibly disciplined and athletic fighter. He wasn't stylish, but he did have technique.

189lbs, shortest reach in HW history, one of the shortest in height, smallest hands in HW history, but also, one of the best chins, one of the hardest punches and all while fighting bigger opponents, some significantly bigger. He ran 5-6 miles every single day, 10-12 miles when a fight was announced, 12-15 miles on fight week, trained with a 300lb heavy bag, and never took a day off. Marciano was simply one of the biggest savages to have ever competed in combat sports.

Rocky was human. That is what made him great. What he did with his human nature is what makes him so compelling and inspiring. His will to win is something we all have. His will to win was forged deep in the furnace of his soul and many of us will never get close to approaching our inner fire.

My Mother grew up down the street from Rocky. He would walk by the family home in Brockton bouncing a rubber ball on his way to work. He's one of the greatest legends of sports and I'm glad his legacy is renewed here online.

What I find most interesting is the way his opponents described it. " He literally beat me to the ground" There was no excuses for losing, no blame on the trainer, or gloves, or whatever it may be.

If you educated yourself, and found out that Marciano was nothing more than a mugger and robber, who when to prison while in the Army for strong armed robbery. Was to get a bad conduct discharge, but they had him re-up afther prison then gave him an honorable discharge.He was controlled by the mob, hook, line and sinker. Check his record, in his 21st fight, against a fighter who had a record with 49 losses, he was ready to get knocked out in three differant rounds, only to have the fighter Ted Lowry back off, because he was paid $2,500 by the mob not to win! Rocky never fought a true heavyweight who had power, who wasn't past his prime. He started to make a comeback, until he saw what Liston did to Patterson. I like you, spent the last 60 years believing all the BS about this guy.
What he was, was a double tought meathead, who could take punishment; He was a dirty fighter, who either lost points, or was warned several times in almost every one of his fights for loe blows. Holyfield was lucky that Foreman wasn't just a little bit faster.. Foreman only landed ONE semi hard punch on him. Holyfield went back to his corner after the round, asking if all his teeth were still in, because he couldn't feel his mouth anymore, at all.
All those guys would get smashed to bits by Holmes, Norton, Foreman, Ali, Frazier.. heck even by Ron Lyle, maybe even Shavers... Sure, that's the 70s, not the 50s, but let's pretend these 90s and 2000s/2010s guys are all that special. Especially the latter two...

Yes, George ended up punching himself out, but he also wasn't in shape.
Not to mention that Ali and his team were notorious cheats (Dundee was seen tampering with the ring ropes. He lied about it for years and years, and finally late in his life he admitted it but claimed "I was trying to tighten them", which is obviously a lie. A) he has no right to touch them B) why not notify the people in charge of the ring/the commission or sanctioning body; not to mention them cutting open Ali's gloves to give him extra time to recover in between rounds, when he was knocked down and badly hurt by Cooper, his blatant fouls - well over 100 of them - in his 2nd fight with Frazier, etc...).
George beat himself in Zaire, along with Ali's faux rope a dope, never seen again after, that allowed him to lean back further thus Foreman only hit him at the end of his punches, losing most of his power.
George believed in his own invincibility and didn't train for a 15 round fight, and so he got tired, he got caught, and he got ended. That's on him.
He was an extremely good boxer, he just chose not to box. However he was extremely inexperienced, not just opponent wise, but he had a VERY late start boxing, short amateur career, and very short pro career considering the time it was.
They did built up a "dream team" around him, with Liston, Archie Moore and Dick Sadler.
But none of that matters, if it's only for a short duration, you can't catch up on the people that have been doing it since they were kids or very young (pre-)teens...

I don't care how big or small rocky was he had 1 thing no heavyweight has ever had and thats heart,desire,will...when u face pure determination,pure heart,pure toughness and somebody who can't be broke thats what wins fights...thats what champions are made of...as for ur list of who u think rocky couldn't beat I beg to differ....I believe rocky could amber any heavyweight..why???because the man had a heart like no other,he had a sheer will to win at any and all cost..he didn't know how to loose...he just kept coming doesn't matter what you hit him with or how badly u hurt him he just kept coming and his punches where vicious he didn't care if he hit your head,body,arms he just made you pay ...any part of your body thats legal to hit thats what rocky did...when a man like ali said himself rocky would give him the most trouble that speaks volume....any and every sport isn't just about pure athletic ability ..its about heart,will and pure desire to win at all and any cost ....when talent and athleticism goes out the window and it's a war ....its about how tough u are,how far your willing to dig down and how much more can you take and give...rocky knew how much he could endure ,how much he could give and he knew no fighter could match his will,his heart,his desire or his toughness ...rocky won on pure toughness and grit..he is by far the toughest boxer ever to live...the amount of punishment he absorbed was unheard of...those boxers you spoke of would break under rocky pressure and pure toughness ....you could knock the man down but you couldn't keep him down and look when he stood up he wasn't wobbly ...when you fought rocky it was a marathon and these fighters today couldn't last at that pace. That man's pace was brutal he just kept coming and throwing, he had no regard for his own body...he just left it out there dangling daring fighters to hit him with everything ask jersey Joe...he made the comment that the man is so easy to hit but what Joe didn't realize was it didn't matter what you hit him with he just kept coming and training boxing 83 rounds is crazy ....he was prepared for a marathon in every single fight ...round 13 when the man is standing in the middle of the ring waiting for you after taking round after round of punishment is crazy ....the man was made out of iron...his style was simple alot of fighters today would have loved the fact that you could hit him with ease but after round 10 they all would have Been gassed and left wondering what they have to do to slow him down,wondering how they could keep him off them ....he battered fighters body,head,arms...after 10 rounds of getting your body smacked,arms beat on ,head knocked around fighters today wouldn't know how to handle that kind of style ....pure bruising style,hit you anywhere he could...just inflict damage all over a fighter...thats something fighters never experienced until they fought rounds with rocky ....he use to like punching fighters in the elbows why?because as the rounds went on it became harder to hold ur arms up,throw punches then you where a sitting duck

I've lived in Rockys hometown of Brockton,Massachusetts for all my life, it's the city of champions. Marvin Hagler also grew up and trained here. The hard work ethics of both fighters still echoes throughout the city.

You have to respect a man who knows his body's limit and retires when it's time instead dragging it out just to add a few more wins. What amazes me is how well spoken he is. He was not the smartest fighter but he clearly is intelligent. He did what he knows works for him and did it for until he knew he was losing his edge and retired with pride. Good for him!
What always amazed me was the referees in this era never stopped fights but in Rocky's fights you can see the referee looking to stop them quite often and that is testement to how much damage he was causing to these guys

I think the point is being missed here. Rocky probably shouldn’t even have been a heavyweight to be honest. So comparing his power with others is a moot point. What he did though was put out more kinetic energy over time that almost anyone else. He broke people down. This was a testament to his preparation. To kill himself in camp so he could do this. As an ex boxer this is hard to do & to do it continuously through a career is almost inhuman. That’s what makes him great to me.

He like too many fighters get tricked into fighting that type of opponents fight playing right into men like Marciano's hands. 1 of the all time obvious examples of this was Julio Cesar Chavez and Meldrick Taylor. It didn't lack technical skill at all, that's a lie. Watch some matches, some analysis about his style, or same explanation of Cus D'Amato about him. Maybe he had a "browler" style not so fancy to watch, but he had tons of skill, and he was a great innovator.

Those dudes could get SMALL, and with head and body movement, be REALLY hard to hit. Also, being shorter, they probably had a neck-strength advantage/leverage advantage, which they now say a few extra pounds of strength in the neck gives huge protection from concussion. Your head just doesn't move as much when you get hit. Maybe there's something to the technique, where the only angles you're giving up are angles that aren't going to torque your head.

One thing people rarely choose to recall about Tyson is what a massive scholar of the fight game he's always been. He's probably watched more fight films than any other boxer in history; and can break them down with an eye even experts would struggle to match. I only know who Rocky Marciano is because of Stallone's movies. I always wondered why I never heard his name mentioned with the greats. This video surprised me because I never would have guessed he had such an impressive record and that he was such a great role model. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Stallone's Rocky movies are not about Rocky Marciano. It is widely known the inspiration for those movies was Chuck Wepner.
The heavyweight division was at it's weakest during Marciano's time. He fought and defeated both Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott when both were well past their prime. Can't knock the Rock for beating everyone who came around during his time, but he certainly was in the right place at the right time. Had he been born ten years later, he would have fought the likes of Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, Oscar Bonavena and George Chuvalo. Had Marciano fought and prevailed over these fighters, he would indeed be the greatest.

Truth is Marciano fans could careless about Walcott Charles Moore otherwise they would never denigrate Ali Liston Holmes Tyson Wilder etc. It's all about skin color. I've studied Marciano extensively for 8 months and it just dawned on me that this is exactly what's happening. Rocky fans always besmirch and belittle black fighters EXCEPT for Walcott Charles Moore. I've witnessed it hundreds of times, pure Hate for Liston Holmes Tyson yet pure Love for Walcott Charles Moore.
His exteme amount of training caused that.
That was something I always thought about with Ali. I remember when he said how Rocky could've given him one heck of match. I think Ali had such a respect for those champs that came before him. Tyson was the same way. Respect.

I constantly have to defend Rocco against the boxing history neophytes, who claim Ali was the greatest. Rocky would havre knocked him out first right hand he landed. His record is un-parelled 49-0. The fact he fought almost every month & managed the accumulate that amount of bouts in such a short amount of time is incredible. I went to the U.S.A. to Brockton, to see his gym at the YMCA, James Edgar playing fields across the street from his family home, saw the plaque commerating his achievements. Must be something in the water there, as Marvelous Marvin Hagler hailed from that town too. Brockton 2 for 2 for me! Rocky was a boxing hero for me & I named my son Rocco in his honour. I see Rocky's unassailing determination in my son as he grows, he can punch like a pro already, even though he is not going to tread the canvas, he has Rocky's confidence & pugnacious attitude in all he pursues! He was brave, good at heart, a great sportsman and he never forgot who he was and where he came from. Rocky Marciano was just a great person. A hero to his people and he was The Iron Man Champion who never lost. Imagine a guy like reapears in the modern time of boxing and he gets to learn a real fighting style yet he´ll be a rock, a Mountain in the ring to never quit, to always get up and returns the blows he takes back at his opponent 10fold. This man would be unstoppable!!!
Why the hell have I not heard much about this guy? Not only was he the definition of a tank, not only did people underestimate him, he sounds like heroes I’ve seen in tv shows and movies. Real big heart and not corrupted.

My father is 75 still connected as a coach to the boxing club he started at as a 9 year old kid , and Rocky is his all time favourite that speaks loads to me 🥊

Fans once littered the ring when Marciano won a decision against a nobody who kicked his ass in every department. The newspaper wrote an article stating that the judges had seen a different fight than everyone else. Look at his videos. Not one shows anybody other than an old washed up opponent or a punching bag that just stood flat footed against him. Fury and any modern super heavyweight would destroy him.

I always knew that he was a famous fighter, but didn't know how almost indestructible he became in the ring.
Every single disadvantage you could think of , yet he got through by sheer willpower, heart and determination to succeed along with training as hard as possible to beat people no one else in his position should've been able to beat.
That is inspiring as hell.
Will power is not enough. I think he was naturally resistant to getting knocked out. Scary as hell since he can punch and will trade blows. Impossible to beat.

He sounded like a great guy in and out of the ring. Smart that he quit early before he got anymore serious injuries. It's a pity he died too soon.

Many of Rocky's detractors say he was too small and could not possibly have the same punching power as the larger boxers of later generations. Cleveland Williams was one of those boxers. Williams and Marciano had one common opponent, 200 lb Keene Simmons. When asked who punched harder between the two, Simmons replied without equivocation, Marciano did.

What stands out above all for me is that, despite being the utterly formidable fighter he was, Rocky, like Jack Dempsey before him, appears to have been a genuinely decent and humble human being, who would never trash talk or otherwise be disrespectful towards his opponent.
Contrast that with some of the vile specimens we see fighting today, few if any of whom could have stood up to either of those giants.
The weigh in with Joe Louis vs Rocky Marciano is one of the most unique classic moments in American sports history. 2 great men with all the pressure from the world showed such class and the utmost high level of respect to each other. Very rare to see two of USA finest athletes ever, even if Joe was older at this time in his career. They both were put into this situation for the fans and money. They handled themselves so well. This doesn’t work with other fighters you put together nor can you copy this for future entertainment. Just real classic moment and situation in American sports history.
His restraint at 6:35 is the mark of an absolute professional! He knew his opponent was out as soon the punch landed and withheld any further punishment before they hit the ground. That's repect for the sport right there.

Excellent video, I can remember my father fondly speaking about Rocky Marciano. He saw him fight in NY in the 1950's and said that nobody could compare to him. He had powerful punch in both hands and arms and could take very punishing blows and keep fighting. He is definitely a legend and clearly was a good hearted man. Rest in peace, Rocky.

Either way, you underestimate Marciano's power in both hands and his incredible ability to take punishment. For what he lacked in weight and reach, those two things made up for it. Rocky is a misunderstood champion, he more than overcompensated his natural limits of height and reach, also he trained like a mad man to go down below 190, he could have easily fought at 205, old films are deceiving.
@@sergiomarretta3753 I like to compare prime to prime, or as close as possible. We have to remember that Ali didn't fight in his prime. He had to stop in his mid 20s, and couldn't fight again until late 20s. He likely wasn't training as hard during that period. So, technically, the best Ali footage we've seen was probably just a good version of his best. It would be a decision, but Ali could throw punches from all angles, so he would dance, slip, and counter all fight. Taking nothing from Rock though, he's one of the best ever. Ali had the advantage of being pushed by a tough heavyweight era, and Marciano had the advantage of being pushed by harsh living conditions. Ali fought too long, and Marciano stopped too early, but hey, that's how it goes. I also don't think Marciano fought anybody with Ali's hand speed. I love Marciano, but I think prime Tyson is the best brawler I've seen. If Cus lived longer, Tyson might have been undefeated.

One of my favourite stories about Rocky came from Archie Moore. After his fight with Marciano, Archie was asked when he realized he was in trouble. His response was "in the first round". The interviewer mentioned that since Archie knocked down Rocky in the first, how he could know he was in trouble. Archie said, "I hit him harder than I ever hit any man, and he got up mad".
