The story behind that fight is a good one. He and Ketchel were friends. Ketchel was a light heavyweight and had no business being in the ring with such a big fighter. They agreed beforehand to put on a good show despite this. Midway through, however, Ketchel started feeling himself, decided to try to win, and knocked Johnson down. Johnson was like, “Oh, it’s like that now huh?” He immediately got up and knocked the guy cold, knocking out two of his teeth.

@@yoking1202 Considering how incredibly racist and segregated America was at that time, I very highly doubt that story of them being friends is even remotely true. Not to mention the fact that you can see in the actual fight footage that Johnson and Ketchel were both fighting very hard to knock the other out the entire fight, that alone shows that they had no interest in prolonging the fight or "putting on a good show." Just because people perpetuate or re-tell the same legend, that doesn't mean that it's true. It's usually, more often than not, complete bull shit just like in this case. Just a made up story and nothing more.

Jack is those ideals personified. honestly there’s probably dozens of other black men at the time who could’ve done this if they were not in jail due to racist laws. but Jack was the one who had the chance and decided to be a trailblazer. his struggles changed people’s views on what not only black people, but Americans were capable of.

@@akashnadar1449 How baseless !!! Before Jack Johnson, blacks were supposed to fight within themselves only. At that time, world Champion meant only a white-skinned sportsman, and blacks were engaged (say, forced to be engaged) in sports separately. And the champion among them were called "coloured champion". If at the time of Jack Johnson, one black was not supposed to fight another black, why the hell Johnson had to become a "coloured champion" before becoming undisputedly world champion i.e. beating the-then white heavyweight champion? After becoming universally accepted world heavyweight boxing champion (beating both black contenders and afterwards, white contenders) Johnson, for the reason best known to him, refused to fight another black pugilist and hence, was reluctant to give his fellow black gladiators the chance to win championship among all races (both blacks and whites). Previously, already Jack Johnson got a bad reputation in the society of whites by romancing, marrying, then even physically abusing his wives who were all white ladies, and afterwards, his unfortunate decision of not facing black boxers made him unpopular in the society of blacks also.
Where have you got this amusing news that at that time, two black boxers' fight wasn't promoted? I would like to know about the source of your THIS information.

@@squeegeedaniels2105 Exactly. Jack Johnson proved the so-called myth as "BOGUS" that whites meant invincible. He broke that falsehood. For a true gallant gladiator like him, it's very unfortunate, you know, to achieve bad reputations in his own black society. He could remain an all-time role model, as well as, great inspiration to all black kids from their childhood (which has later been done by Ali, Joe Louis, Carl Lewis, Alfrederick Joyner, Jesse Wens Owens) which opportunity he intentionally lost.
