- The Burns-Johnson Fight (or Burns-Johnson Contest) is a 1908 documentary film of the boxing fight between Tommy Burns and Jack Johnson at Sydney Stadium, Rushcutters Bay, on 26 December 1908 for the World Heavyweight Championship title, which Johnson won.It was produced by Charles Cozens Spencer at the behest of the fight's promoted Hugh D. McIntosh.
Some footage from the film survives today, chiefly of that showing some of the middle rounds of the 14-round fight.

Probably just evolution of the sport, nothing wrong with wrestling element of clinching - they thought at that time, punches will happen anyway, and there is no tv audience hungry for the action
Its wild to see how slow the action was. No wonder some fights went 130 rounds + in the 1800s. If you fight with constant hugging you can go all day. Plus they never move. The first man to discover sticking & moving must have been dominant.

A 6’1” man is not a literal giant. Compared to the diminutive Noah Brusso, perhaps a man of Jack Johnson’s stature could be considered as a figurative giant.
Now, if Noah had been in there against a man of Robert Wadlow’s height of 8 ft, 11.1 inches, then he could have been said to be in there against a literal giant.

Thanks for sharing. Jack Johnson's story (or stories) needs to be told to today's audience. His life would make a fascinating tv series or at least a good movie. He stood proud and unapologetic, in a society rife with racism, as an ebony obelisk in the eye of every racist. Forcing them to endure the fact that the were not superior. This socially disadvantaged black man routinely decimated the greatest white champions of the era--and often with ease. They cut the cameras when they saw it; but now it's time to turn them back on and give World Champion Jack Johnson his due.

Johnson weighed 212, at 6'1-1/2, versus Burns, who was only around 180, and also stood a mere 5'7. In this day and age, Burns would've been able to cut to 168 pretty easily. He'd be hovering between 168-175. Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight. Imagine Burns vs Canelo..!!! That would've been a Barn Burner of a Brawl..!!!

Johnson was very appreciative of Tommy Burns later in life, since he was the only heavyweight champion that would give a black man a title shot. And Burns obviously wasn't a real heavyweight, he would probably be a super middleweight nowadays.

One of the biggest myths in boxing. Cameras were not stopped at that moment. Film was edited later in the hopes it could be shown in the United States. How do we know this? The full film was showed on US Navel vessels in the following months as well as Australian theaters to sell out crowds. News paper reviews of these showings tell of the police entering the ring, stopping the fight and escorting the fighters out of the ring. This are easily looked up. So film was not stopped. Less than 50% of the fight exist today.

@@everettwilson1416 Boxing is a business, what did you expect him to do-fight Johnson for nothing because it was the 'fair' thing to do? Boxers didn't make as much in those days even considering inflation, they had to fight often and they got better purses when they won consistently. Burns could have continued to duck Johnson, but instead he gave him a shot. The money certainly was part of it, but only part of it. Burns was not a perfect man, but he was pretty enlightened for the times. He became a preacher later in life and Johnson gave him credit for giving him the fight.

Ok people, the NSW Police stopped the Camera but only AFTER they stopped the fight. They did NOT edit the footage, THAT was done by the owners of the film. This footage also does not show the knock downs Johnson scored. No doubt the NSW police were racist, and indeed we have had a long history with them of racism.... however... for whatever reason, they did NOT view Johnson in quite the same light as they viewed local Aboriginal people, for example.
If they HAD, they would not have allowed the fight at all, nor allowed Johnson be declared winner and thus WHC. They DID though. They stopped the fight because since the death of Otto Cribb in 1901, in a defense against the former champion, Mick Dunn, for the Australian Middle Weight title, the NSW police had become much more concerned about professional boxing. When Dunn beat, and in so doing, killed, Cribb to reclaim the title, he, the referee, Cribbs own manager, and the promoter were all arrested and initially charged over his death.
They were ultimately released and charges dropped, but it caused huge public outcry about the tyranny of Police involvement in matter. After that, the police decided to monitor, and preemptively act if needed.
That's what they did here. It was clear Burns was unable to continue, the pummeling by todays standards would probably have seen the referee stop the fight, or Burn's corner throw in the towel, but back then, it was rare for this to happen. If they had NOT ended the fight, it' highly possible Burns would have been severely injured at the least, and worse, no one wanted another death.
Fortunately someone had the foresight to stop this before it went badly, the ref was remiss in not doing so, Burn's corner was too, even if the fighter thinks they can go on, when they cannot answer the kind of pummeling he got in the last few moments, if they cannot defend themselves, and have nothing left, but to be repeatedly savagely beaten, the fight MUST be stopped. That's just simply the ethical thing to do.
If it was Racism, they'd stopped it a lot sooner and arranged the disqualification of Johnson from the match on some grounds.
No, they stopped it for valid reason, and they told the officials to declare Johnson the WINNER.
The editing was done by other people, and THEY were the ones who did not want to show Burns being more convincingly beaten than he is in this footage, or his ultimate loss, the moment a Black man became WHC.
Doesn't make it right, but do not go blaming Australian authorities for something they had no power over and did not do.

Tommy Burns was 5'-7" and weighed 163 lbs. at the time of the fight. (hardly a real heavyweight) He had lost 10 lbs. and was battling either infuenza or jaundice, according to historical records. Jack Johnson weighed 40 lbs more, was 6'-2", more experienced and in his prime. It was never really a contest, although I suspect Johnson made it look like it was.

Back in 1908 the average height for men was between 5'6 and 5'7 so Burns was average height and Johnson at 6'2 was a monster, despite that being a normal tall height today.

I felt like Burns definitely said something nasty during their encounters previously when Johnson was following him around the world trying to get a fair title shot or during the fight itself. The fight went from toying to very personal real quick

Nowadays, if "Tommy Burns" was boxing in this modern era, he'd simply cut 5 lbs and compete at light heavyweight(175).
He was 5'7 and weighed 180 lbs. He competed at heavyweight because there was much more money to make, in that weight-division. Nowadays, 180 lbs is a very small cruiserweight. Anyone weighing 180 is simply going to cut to 175 or less, maybe Much Less. Heck, nowadays, Middleweights(160) walk around at 180-190 before doing they're weight-cut. Speaking of Middleweights, "Stanley Ketchell", a 5'8 Middleweight took on Jack Johnson, a year after this bout, in 1909. Outside of the ring, Johnson and Ketchell were actually good friends. Ketchell wound up getting shot dead, in the back, by an angry farmer, in 1910, a short time after Johnson's win over Jim Jefferies, who tried to make a comeback after a near 6 year layoff. No one shut off any cameras in that bout, while Johnson was pummeling an exhausted beaten up Overmatched Jefferies. Ketchell was actually planning to cold clock Jefferies, before he entered the ring versus Johnson. Ketchell had watched Jefferies spar in his preparation training, and he didn't like what he saw. I think that Ketchell was hoping to be a fill-in opponent for Johnson. Boxing Trainers and such, got word of Ketchell planning to sabotage Johnson-Jefferies, by punching out Jefferies before the Reno, Nevada fight of the century, and Ketchell was promptly removed from the premises. Ketchell clearly knew beforehand that Johnson would be way too much for the obviously washed up Jim Jefferies.

Johnson had to chase Brusso for two years and promoters had to come up with a huge amount of $$$ before Noah would dare set foot in a ring to face the beating that he almost certainly knew was coming.
Also, Brusso hurled all manner of racial insults at Jack. Noah was fortunate that Johnson held back. Watch the PBS documentary about Jack Johnson if you have any doubts about this.

If Johnson had been really mad he would have destroyed him very quickly. Even leading ip to the Johnson-Jeffries fight the little Canadian still hurled racist insults at Jack. The little man was not too bright.
Johnson was just too big, fast and strong for Burns. It was a mismatch.
