Dude donât ever doubt yourself when teaching. Your idea here, simple yet totally effective. As others have said I totally got phrasing for the fist time today. Thanks so much for sharing your genius. Seriously.
Stitch - itâs human, but youâve been at it SO LONG and WE ALL love you! You are a fantastic person and a huge inspiration. Itâs HARD work and we notice and showcase it at our levels. Thank you! Love these
Totally I agree don't doubt yourself man your good and this helped
This is a great approach, really makes a lot of sense. Thank you very much!!!
Agreed !
This video has completely changed the way I approach lead guitar, and I have watched countless videos that never seemed to help me improve. I watched this video about 6 months ago when I bought my electric guitar and I have improved drastically just because of this video. I am self taught on acoustic and had some lead guitar basis there but I could only play one style/sound (very Jack Johnson like). Now because of this video I can play lead phrases that can match various genres that Iâve been trying to create in. Thank you so much for sharing this lesson with all of us.
I can stress enough how many âlead guitarâ or âguitar soloâ tip videos Iâve watched and of all them yours was the key to my progression. Respect đ«Ą
I'm gonna try the phrase "these pretzels are making me thirsty". And a call back of "no soup for you".
đâ€ïž
"Vandelay Industries"
These work well lol
Youâre not only the best teacher, but you make me happy just watching. Youâre obviously a great human being. Thanks for doing what you do.
That's a nice thing to say
yes he's a wonderful human bean.
You are the most humble teacher on CZcams Thank You so much. You make learning so enjoyable!
One of the best piece of advice ive heard in my 16 years of playing guitar
Great now I'm going to me singing "I like pizza" every time I pick up my guitar now.
I like pizza too!
....better that than mindlessly worrying about practicing scales, shapes, and sequences
@@Feverdream7777 Yes, but I sat down to practice guitar but I ended up ordering a pizza instead.
Now I'm singing 'I like the colour green' to the tune of 'Centerfold' by J Geils Band
@@gregoryvanderpas4176 HAAAAđđđ€Łđđ€Ł
Guitar player of 10 years.. I cried watching. How simple the phrase, "I like pizza", yet such beautiful emotion, such raw energy that just makes me happy and made me remember why I love playing so much. "I like pizza, too." Thank you for this, this truly did help my playing.
I cried too, but from laughter at how every phrase I legit heard "I like Pizza" every time and it was just funny lmao. BUT, it actually worked and I get what he's saying so it's working great as a teaching tool.
@@kagenotatsumaki I did the exact same thing and I canât stop laughing and crying at the simplicity and the beauty of this whole thing nothing has ever clicked more with me
Iâm not here to master, Iâm here to shed light. Love it
You've just explained one of the hardest concepts so easily; which most guitarists usually fail to execute properly. The technique is to just let go, be calm and feel the rhythm. This concept is very deep yet very simple. Thank you! Keep going!
The Bob Ross of guitar. I appreciated this video all the way around. Very interesting
That'd be Marty Friedman
This is the first lesson on phrasing that I can actually execute. The crazy ideas are often the best! Keep your creative genius flowing! Thanks.
Exactly! The best thing I get from this is your trying to sing on the guitar. Nobody may know what your saying but you do!
Im 60 years old, been playing since I was about 17. Iv played alongside _a lot_ of musicians, and this is the first time that anyone has suggested anything like this, and its brilliant! So simple and _so accurate!_ Awesome job, much respect.
Incredible, sub consciously I'm doing this but I could not make any sense of why. Now it all makes.
My grandma that passed played the guitar and she always said to sing. I finally get it now
Sing with the guitar , people may not know what your saying but you already know that "you like pizza".
I usually don't comment on youtube vidoes but I couldn't help myself. I am mostly taught guitar through youtube and there's so much information out there that it can be overwhelming. But your videos are so simple and concise. I have been playing seriously for only a few years so I know all the basic chords and the pentatonic scale and that's about it. I just got finished practicing over a backing track with the pentatonic scale as I usually do and always find myself repeating the same licks or phrases and try my best to step outside the box but your "creature of habit" comment is spot on. As soon as I finished practicing I came on youtube and this video came up in my recommended and it helped me so much. I want to thank you. You have a gift for teaching.
Brilliant technique. This is often overlooked. so many people hum and grunt when they play this is a grat way to become one with your guitar. Great video
I like to try and harmonize and sing it at the same time : D
WOW !....Just wow. After all of the books, videos and lessons, this youtube video brought it to me. I cant thank you enough for bringing real such an awesome teaching method to us.
I just came across this video and this truly opened my eyes to phrasing. As someone who played scale-based solos, this opened a new door for me. I did âI like pizza, i like pizza too,â and added a âdo you?â Every fourth bar and I cannot believe how melodic it sounds! Great stuff! Thank you!
I believe Frank Zappa talked about spending time doing this. Just having normal conversations with people and matching your emphasis and timing on one note over and over.
He did this interesting experiment where he had Steve Vai notate his speech and then play his guitar along with it. His song Jazz Discharge Party Hats does this. Love Frank Zappa, best musician of all time.
@@jan_Travis also the dangerous kitchen! i love uncle FZ
@@caffeinebean2238 yes me too! Frank is the best.
Ian. Thank you for being my guitar teach man. You never disappoint. Ever. Enjoy your travels bro.
This was a really good lesson. Most times you just wanna pick up the guitar and jam out some random notes. This gives you that phrasing factor that you were going for. You nailed this lesson, extremely helpful
Genius in its simplicity yet effectiveness⊠the part of the puzzle I was missing đâ€ïž
I'll be damn!!!
Never looked at phrasing like this before. My game just got much better
Wow, this is a great idea. There's a reason you're the best teacher on youtube. How does the quote go, if you can't explain it to a child you don't know it well enough. You know it very well and know how to teach it. I like pizza, too!
This maybe the greatest idea for conveying this idea I've ever heard..
Iâm a little stoned right now but I just had the insane realization why I havenât been moving forward in my guitar journey and itâs because I needed a lesson like this. Idk why I told you this but I feel like you and I really realize how valuable this is. Play on man
Iâm excited to try this. Been playing for a while now but Iâve never seen phrasing explained like this and it really clicked with me!
You're the Bob Ross of teaching guitar. I feel so calm watching this.
I love when you get in that zone....eyes closed, gigantic smile on your face :)
Ian --- You, my man, are brilliant! This is the finest phrasing lesson -- EVER... thanks again, Man...
Just spread the word my man!
This is stupidly simple yet brilliantly applicable.
I've been playing for over 50+ years professionally. This is brilliant. Well done.
if Students could sit with you around a fire and listen to you, just listen to you they would be a better musician the very next day. not only a musician but a better person. thats the kind of Teacher you are. â€ïžâ€ïž
You have solved the exact problem I was having with my improvisation, and it only took you a few minutes. Thank you so much for this! đ
Watching your videos have really opened up the possibility of improving almost ten times faster than other methods.
A Stich in time saves nine.
Duuuuuude! Guitarist for 14 years here, it took exactly 10 seconds for me to sub and like! I have somehow never thought of this. I'm not particularly good at guitar, but I am going to find a new jamtrack and explore the crap out of this exercise!
Thank you for existing man
I've been playing guitar for 40 years and this is the most brilliant breakdown of phrasing I have ever seen. Great job! ('Course, it helps that I like pizza...)
do what he says next time you order a pizza...
Absolute game changer..
I am self taught and from the south of India.. And this has opened my mind soo much.. Please don't doubt your methods..
In my opinion you are probably one the greatest guitar teachers on CZcams.
Iâm a software engineer with aspirations of collecting and gamifying the best practices and principles and this was always one of my favorite ways to think about improvised melody. A true classic and great for younger players IMHO đ
Holy hell that's brilliant! I'm sure a similar idea to this comes naturally to all of the great soloists but almost 10 years in I hear this and first try I'm already more musical.
StichM, how many times must I thank you man, you're bring joy, all the best to you and the family. Thanks
Ian just started listening began to laugh and then realized what a cool idea đžđĄ
Hay man dont pay no mind to what people say about talking to much . You are the best ! STAY COOL BRO
I'm fairly new to guitar. This is where I was stuck. Now I'm not. I can jam now. Don't doubt yourself brother. This is fantastic I sent it to all of my friends.
Great lesson! This is such a great help, youâre a genius!
I kept smiling the whole time when he played I like pizza. This example is nice I think I apply it to the bass
'I'm not here to master just to spread light' that you are my friend, that you are. I wish you'd been my guitar teacher growing up! Thank you for your lessons!
Yes!
Beautifully put.
This is a great lesson! thank you for sharing!
Thanks Zack...oh yeah, and thanks Stich!
Love your videos my brother! So good to see you out on the road! đđ€đ»
Love it! So simple and helpful!
This is the most valuable tutorial Iâve ever seen. I always had this problem on guitar and since Iâve started playing piano Iâve really felt trapped by my phrasings. Iâd kind of resigned myself to that but this has opened my eyes. Thank you very much.
Call and Response!!!
Sometimes it looks like people are talking to themselves while they're laying down a lead. I've often wondered if they weren't using this very approach. It's probably the best way to come up with a lyrical sounding solo for those of us that aren't blessed with being natural born virtuosos.
that is the key to lead playing..if you cant hear a phrase or lick in your head..you cant play it. The better players just have a knack of tuning into a song that then leads to a solo..I do try !
Ive been waiting for this lesson for so long. Cheers mate
Love your approach! Really helps clairfy!
For crying out loud donât ever stop teaching. This was my roadblock! Thank you.
Damnit, this is actually brilliant.
This is a great concept and I will be practicing it. Thanks Stich!
This was absolutely amazing. Thank you!
Music is about saying something, else why do it? Great lesson!
This makes sense, totally. How else do you make the guitar talk but by practicing this phrasing. Super!

"not here to master. I'm here to shed light." Okay mister terrapin haha
Really love the concept, Thanks alot!

Brilliant! You are a great teacher! Thank You!
"I like doughnuts and cronuts," a longer phrase.
Ha, now , what's a cronut?
@@harrygarcia8749 The cronut is a croissant-doughnut pastry. It resembles a doughnut and is made from croissant-like dough which is filled with flavored cream and fried in grapeseed oil.
Crushed that lesson. Well done Stich.
Just beautiful. Iâm constantly astounded at the simplicity of these concepts and the magic you create with them.
Thanks for this Ian! A half hour lesson flies by so quickly. So happy to see this idea laid out in detail. I'll be adding this to my practicing routine for sure.
Brilliant! You are a superb teacher.
Love the background. Makes your videos way more chill
Iâve now watched two random videos of yours after they showed up in my suggestions, and both have helped me learn to play with feeling better than any of the other CZcams guitar lessons Iâve seen. The way you teach is personal, unique and accessible. Subscribed now! Please keep it up!
Well done! Simple clear message and easy to apply.

Hello from Australia! I really enjoy your lessons and this one just absolutely nailed it. Thanks mate!
So simple and yet so awesome. Thanks for making this simple.
Really awesome lesson brother. Appreciate ya.
Great lesson, material and presentation are awesome. Thanks
Thank you Zack! And thank you Stitch!
Listened to this getting ready for work, Iâve been waiting all day to try this out!
Stich you are a blessing! I improved so much just by the way you explained this concept. Communication is key, and I'm picking up what you're putting down brother. Where ever you are out there I'm sending love. My goal has always been to sort of "sing" with my guitar, and this really hit home. Keep being awesome!
