Thanks so much for supporting TomoFujitaMusic!! - Hudba
I signed up for your guitar wisdom and I’m loving it so far. I even ordered the book you recommended for your sight reading series. Been doing video a day followed by practice. Definitely see and improvement.
So happy to hear that! Thank you so much! Good job!
I love how Tomo's eyes stare into my soul telling me "yes, you're shit now, but study, practice, practice and perform, and you will improve"
Thank you!
🤣🤣🤣
Folks, this is the BEST lesson on improvisation you can get. He's just given you the secret. I have a degree in music, and this person humbly distilled it all in 11 minutes.
Thank you so much!
I have a degree in music and I'm telling this professor of berklee kinda knows what he's doing...
@@wellington66440 he’s considered as top tenure lol look his biography
He wasn't just a person he is a Master!
Triads?
I can’t believe I can access such compelling musical insight for free. As a beginner to early intermediate guitarist stuck in the pentatonic shapes I have no business being taught like this one on one and the fact that we’re able to get these snippets from Tomo for free is just awesome. Thank you Tomo!!
So great to hear that! Thank you so much!
coming from someone who's been playing for a very long time. this is the last CZcams guitar subscription you'll ever need.
Dude I feel you. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years and lived in penotoic shapes for half of it lol. I learned a lot of different scale patterns early on but stayed "noodling" and wondering why all my solos sound the same haha. This is a great resource for sure! How's your playing going? I feel like I'm finally getting the sound I'm looking for.
I’m just sharing an idea here but for me the thing that got me out of Pentatonix boxes when I just was disgusted with myself, was to just decide to do single string playing for everything for like 3 to 6 months. Play melodies on single strings, play everything on single strings, and then play on two strings. I did a lot of practice for about two years they added advantage you get to play horizontally up and down because it’s the only way to get the notes you need. I’m just sharing a thought that worked for me not that I’m Pat Metheny, but I’ve had to bust out of a lot of ruts and the thing that works best is having a love and constant curiosity, and knowing that there is an answer that would simply lead to another question.
So what I found to be the "5 Tips" from this vid were:
-Make a more patient decision on what to play. (Don't just play B minor pentatonic scale, play B minor pentatonic SOUND)
-Play your instrument with respect. No need to play it HARD and loud all of the time. Spice tastes better when mixed with other things!
-Shapes should be known. Try to locate multiple voicings and locations of triads, for example. Then your playing is easily more about notes than scales.
-What are you thinking?! Think about things that can distract you while you can still play. Food is a great thing to think about! (Side note: I think its always fun to associate flavors with sounds we can make, so try to cook up some riffs!)
-? Try to repeat licks over chord progressions. Applying similar shapes to the progression will add familiarity of the same movements, but variance because of the shape moving through the scale.
Thank you so much! More detail lessons are at my Guitar Wisdom.
Yes and a good way to know where to go and what is possible on chord progressions, before going creative with solo is also to see the connections between the chords, this make the difference, and a way to practice it is to endlessly arpeggiate the chord progression and try to spot where it resolves with one or two steps between a triad note and the next chord triad
I really appreciate that he doesn’t treat the learner like a dummy. Most of what he says is implied through few words and a practical example. I really dig that about him. He doesn’t waste time with over explaining it. Good teacher.

You are like an enthusiastic friend, showing a new thing and then one more, and yet another helpful hint. Great teaching, tnx!
Tomo is the best of the best.
But it means you have to find his lessons exactly at the right time in your journey. There’s a lot you need to know to get this.
I love Tomo! But in real life i'm a guitar teacher (Learned the old school style before internet) and some times there's a new generation of guys who needs over explanation and tabs for absolutely everything, it seems like a generational way of this era of super information, most of the things i learned was from the records and from fellow musicians who play with me over the years, maybe i tried several years to explain in a detailed way something i could play without thinking long time ago. When i became a teacher kind of wrap a lot of knowledge myself on what i was doing. Glad you can apreciate this way of teach and this is the most voted coment too!! I think that i was starting to stay alone in this idea.
(Sorry my english)
You are the first person I've heard suggest not visualizing pentatonic shape, but hearing pentatonic sound. It's so refreshing to hear it suggested sonically instead of visually. There's absolutely nothing wrong with visual referral when you're just beginning, but there comes a point where you have to start trusting your ears and allow them to lead you outside of your comfort zone. It's okay to make mistakes along the way. Mistakes bring growth.
Thanks for sharing! Very easy to teach & learn pentatonic visually! Then anyone happy 100% of their playing? Thank you!
I wish there was a major school of guitar instruction that didn’t involve playing across all six strings in these visualizations at all but I think it’s our society where people want quick results and they want a system and when you do that people thinking gets very rigid and they’re stuck in the system. I’m actually glad I learned how to play guitar guitar before the Internet! All we had was cassette tapes and frustration! But you couldn’t just get tabs for everything
"Think about food when you're performing" is sincerely some of the greatest musical advice I've ever heard. I went to Berklee for piano so I never got a chance to meet you, but I really love all your youtube content and I'm so appreciative of you uploading so much knowledge for free.
Thank you so much!
Dude. As a bass player I figured out triads to help me walk around. As a lead guitarist, I never considered the triads on the first 3 strings to help me solo. Best advice I've heard. Thank you.
That's awesome! Thank you!

I like the way the HC style slide caught me off guard at 10:19 to then hit again at 10:31 and start to bring everything back home. The lesson was awesome, but the demonstration shouldn't be underestimated here, great fun solo.

Love the way you teach, very nice pace and simple explanation. Thank you so much for this.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much! You're very welcome!
Triads are it. Just cant go wrong. Any underlying chord tone works, And the diminished arpeggios get you moving up and down the neck linking to another voicing position or idea as well as ad an element of harmonic sophistication to the tune (particularly against the minor which is already a "bit diminished" :)
Tomo this lesson is juicy breakthrough territory. Well done.
Thank you!
Yeah the diminished arpeggios sounds like a neat trick to help add "spice". Really cool stuff

I fell into the trap of the box about 10 years ago. I got out of it by learning as much as I could about music theory (still learning; endless journey). Then I avoided the box like the plague (too soon? :P).
BUT
recently, I’ve come back to it, and with all the additional knowledge I’ve gained about modes and triads and chords and so on, not to mention having better overall technique, I find the pentatonic box to be rich and amazing with the proper flourishes.
right! leave petatonic connections out and you are f%^&ed. just my take. i like all the notes, but a pentatonic is a great friend.
@Ian Agreed
thanks for your advice master tomo. i really appreciate your lessons.
You are obviously an intelligent man, in addition to a great guitarist. This lesson is worth more than many jazz lessons I've taken, as it is directly applicable. If I had a gig later today, I could very easily use what you just taught me. Thank you for this awesome lesson, that teaches more in10 minutes that most hour long lessons. Also, that Strat is beautiful. Something about a red Strat is always cool!

Thank you Mr Tomo! Any attempt to express my appreciation will fall short miserably. Your genuine love for life, people and music is pure joy to my heart.
All the best to you and your family.

This is a real guitar teacher. Rather than launching into an amazing solo in order to show off and intimidate his audience, Tomo puts himself in the students shoes and shows it like it is in real life when you practice. I've learned more in 5 minutes here than in the previous 100 hours from other so called teachers. And not only is this a valuable lesson, Tomo actually goes through all the chords of the piece. I hate it when a lesson shows you what to do with one or two chords and then leaves you hanging. Thanks Tomo 😊👍

This humble person truly provides me an inspiration to become the musician I want to be. And there is a big reason - although there are many notes and many scales that go well with each other, these are mere models that human beings have made to _make sense_ of the beautiful audio perceptions that our brain makes. Unlike many youtube channels out there, @TomoFujitaMusic really focuses on teaching you _how_ one can break those models or barriers and explore beyond. IMHO, this is where one's true musical creativity lies. Please keep sharing your ideas and thoughts, and continue to be an inspiration for us.

I've gotten super awesome at doing that, but I find my own guitar playing to be boring after doing that for so long. Great video man, this really helped me view my own playing in a new perspective.

Tomo you are the man! Love how you spread information, wisdom and the idea to stay true to yourself when playing. You are everything a music teacher should be and my life has been soo vastly improved by your lessons and musical mentality. When I become a prominent guitar player, it would be an honor to jam with you one day!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
Thankyou buddy ✌🏾❤️your helping my playing lots
Glad to hear it! Thank you!
I'm a gypsy jazz double bass player, and this is PRICELESS. All of your videos resonate for me, because they touch on the thinking behind everything. Which is almost everything, other than practicing and practicing the ideas. Thank you so very much.
Thank you so much!
I've been Looking at 4, 5, and 6 note Arpeggios to Identify the Chords that exist within the Arpeggios and I've been practicing using those big extended chords as Pentatonic and Hexatonic scales 🎸🎶⚖
I've been experimenting with using the pure Triads that exist in the extended chords and playing those Triads as Arpeggios over the extended chords and vice versa
Your tips are very helpful 🙂
I've been playing for about 40 years and I try to learn something new each and everyday .. Today you were my teacher Thank you 😊

Tomo,
I have seen this video one year ago and again today and it makes more sense now. I used to stress out about playing the chord changes thinking I had to know every triad and map it out to play it. While this isn't untrue, it's also not the complete answer. Now when I am put on the spot I play the chord changes by 'changing directions' melodically with each chord change. Even if it's not the exact triad, if I play just *one* note from the triad/ chord and work around there with other notes it goes smoothly.
Thank you for this!
Thank you so much! Most people think "Practice Stage" and "Performance Stage" Same process! That's impossible to achieve it!
Thank you Mr. Fujita!
Thank you!
