  • These are the first 5 Things I fix with so many of my students. These common practice mistakes create long term bad habits. Those bad habits will keep you in a rut. If you’re a beginner you’re lucky because this will save you a lot of lesson fees and time. If you’re an advanced player and feel stuck this is the key!
    0:00 Intro
    1:20 Problem 1 - Noisy playing
    3:47 Problem 2 - No dynamics or picking control
    6:21 Problem 3 - Too fast
    7:35 Important tip about tempo settings when using instructional videos or books!
    10:05 Problem 4 - No space for guitar to breathe
    16:42 Problem 5 - Too aggressive

      @@binayathulung4343 I've adopted a strong mindset towards practice and developed the understanding that perseverance and patience are key. This lesson alone has A LOT of information that will greatly help. I make sure that I warm up and practice everything I'm taught (spiderwalk, 1212 3212 ..., arpeggios, alternate picking, scales, modes, triads, songs ect...) to the absolute best of my ability with No cheating! Tomo said "Do something until you are so good at it! Then next level!" So I do.
      I also make sure I don't just nonchalantly watch what I'm being taught just because I can pause it and come back later. Thanks Tomo! My 5 things I wish I was told as a beginner:
    1- Get a good guitar teacher before you develop bad habits! They're easier to correct earlier on.
    2- Stop ONLY using Tabs to learn song, try learning them by ear or watching the guitarist play.
    3- Learn others genres! They'll make you a better guitarist.
    4- Learn another instrument, it will massively help you to develop music theory knowledge (specially piano!).
    5- Don't play too much in one go! Give yourself a break every other week.

      @mathrockmaniac7643 Před 3 lety +8

      This is a lot of stuff especially if you have a family and full-time job. I guess if you're serious about it you can but some people don't have the time, they just want to get in and jam so they use tabs, play their favourite songs when they can, and that's it. It's good enough for some. It all depends on what you want to achieve and what you're happy with I guess.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX Před 3 lety +2

      "1- Get a good guitar teacher before you develop bad habits! They're easier to correct earlier on."
      "2- Stop ONLY using Tabs to learn song, try learning them by ear or watching the guitarist play."
      More absolute nonsense. A beginner guitarist will have NO IDEA where the notes are at. Even playing Mary Had a Lamb by ear will be a total struggle. Yes, if you wish to learn how to improvise you HAVE to learn to find notes by ear for sure. But this is more so something for an intermediate to advanced player. Anyone trying to rush past the basics, will develop a bad play style for sure.
      "4- Learn another instrument, it will massively help you to develop music theory knowledge (specially piano!)."
      5- Don't play too much in one go! Give yourself a break every other week."

    • @arthurfranklin9315
      @arthurfranklin9315 Před 3 lety +2

      I would add to #2 - try learning songs by ear, watching videos of others playing, and learning to read real music notation. Like your #1, it's easier to learn early on.

    I have been at a plateau in my guitar playing for 20 years. Tomo Fujita and his Guitar Wisdom lessons taught me to really concentrate on learning to walk really well before trying any running. Not only has my playing ability increased significantly (with lots of work, and a continued commitment to reducing distractions on all levels), but I have not experienced any injury or tension that I used to face when playing so much daily. Also a huge gift to my practice is to stop looking at my playing as suggested by Tomo. Closing my eyes or directing my gaze away from my playing and allowing myself to hear and feel when something is right or wrong---that in itself might be responsible for huge "gains". I am not going to pretend to know any wisdom at my level, but I can say that approaching the guitar and the practice every day with humility, slowing everything down, and listening and feeling has worked for me.

  • @arthurfranklin9315

    #1 - The reason strings ring is sympathetic vibration (the open A and E strings ring in sympathy with notes an octave or fifth away). There are times where you may want sympathetic vibration to work for you, but the goal should be control of that choice.

    It doesn't matter if people are unable to play the basic examples adequately. At least Tomo makes these good points about what it sounds like if a player is unable to mute the strings adequately, have little sense of dynamics, or over-use repetitive arpeggios etc. The guitar isn't difficult to play badly, so we really need Tomo's lesson to help us realise where we need to improve.

    I think with phrasing, on any instrument, the problem is people want to demonstrate the ability to play fast, no pause, no rest, because they want to demonstrate a high level on the instrument-so it becomes like touch typing, it’s about how many notes a minute you can play. Musicians like Louis Armstrong, Eddie Van Halen, John Coltrane, the greats, they can play fast of course, but what really sets them apart is their phrasing. So I tell people, put down the instrument, and sing a solo to the changes to develop phrasing, then try to do the same thing with the instrument.

    I joined your subscription about 3 days ago and I have already made connections that I never would have made because for some reason the singing part really made it easy for me to learn the notes of the major scale. I never have tried singing ANYTHING EVER. I am really enjoying your teaching style. I have tried 4 other teachers and I just couldn't learn their systems, they are all shape based systems and I'm not good with them, I like the theory part of your course that goes right with the fundamentals part. I also love the way you approach playing in general, it has really had me thinking about what I am actually good at. Not just focusing on some super fast lick or song just to make everyone else happy or impressed. That is a very valuable lesson, until now I have felt great pressure to learn quickly, but now I am sitting back and asking WHY? Thank you very much for all you do, I can't wait to see where your course takes my playing.
