    In 2006 Tottenham Hotspur were on the brink of qualifying for the Champions League, for the first time since 1962. All they needed was a win on the final day of the season.
    Instead, they got sick.
    The cause - a suspected poisoned lasagne. Seb Stafford-Bloor retells the story and the investigation that followed. Illustrated by Craig Silcock.

      Spurs had more than enough healthy players to fulfil the fixture, and that was the main thing. The Premier League followed their rules. What do you think Arsenal would have said if the Premier League had set aside their own rules and it led to Spurs qualifying for the Champions League instead of them?

And the Prem let them reschedule matches so they'd be able to field a more competitive squad.

    I don't think a replay would have been a good idea, once it's been played it's been played but the failure of the premier league to postpone the game when West Ham were gracious and understanding enough to accept a reschedule just goes to show how ungracious and unaccepting the premier league were and often still are with some of their poor decisions over the years.

    • @belve10
      @belve10 Před 10 měsíci +17

      I'll start by saying I am an Arsenal supporter so my bias is clear. Had this game not been the season finale, there is no doubt it would have been postponed or possibly replayed. But the last games of the PL season are played simultaneously to avoid backroom deals. At that time, causing Arsenal to not make the Champions League the next year would have been a win for every other London-based team. It would have meant taking down one of the Big Four (Arsenal Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea) at the time. Any of the other 15 teams would have jumped at the chance to bring one of them down.
      The ONLY fair change that could have been made would have been delaying ALL other kickoffs. And that was near logistically impossible as it would have required Arsenal to agree as a hosting location.
      I still chuckle whilst at a restaurant and I see lasagne on the menu to this day.

    Just realized that Chelsea were also involved and decided the fate for both North London rivals and the Champions League after this scandal:
    2012: Chelsea won the Champions League (at that time, UEFA only allowed 4 clubs from each countries to participate instead of 5, while Chelsea were 2 places below Spurs).
    2016: Spurs drew with Chelsea to give Leicester a historic Premier League triumph, then somehow lost the last 2 games, surrendering their 2nd place finishes to Arsenal.
    2022: North London Derby on January was postponed to May because most players were either infected by coronavirus, got injured, or participated in AFCON for the case of African players. As such, Arsenal lost the derby, then to Newcastle, allowing Chelsea and Spurs to play in the Champions League.
