  • Small car camper budget conversion using no-build method, producing an "ikea style" flatpack design that you can easily remove and store.
    hobocyclist.com/live-in-your-car
    This is a how to video showing how I convert a small compact hatchback car into a campervan for sleeping / living in your car. This method is simple to construct using basic materials, plywood and some old carpet. Simple tools were used in the construction process including, a saw, and a power drill to make the slots
    The budget for the build was $20, and materials were purchased from the local recycling centre. You can buy the materials new if you like.
    Materials: - 20mm construction ply, 1 sheet
    - some old carpet (optional: helps protect inside of vehicle)
    Tools: tape measure amzn.to/3rg36lN
    - pencil or pen
    - saw amzn.to/2TdLWIP
    - drill amzn.to/3Bku3tg
    The finished product is a lightweight, strong platform to sleep on in your car, that can be easily removed and stored.
    No need to remove the passenger seats or other parts of the vehicle. car shown is a Nissan Tiida, use whatever car you like.

      I see this as a better design of the usual seats removal then putting a supported board there. Lastly, Bo from @ Mountain Springs Adventures has lids to access the storage down below, I think that could also be incorporated here really quickly. :)

    you can also put a bunch of those sturdy plastic box containers in there, put a flat board of some sort on top and it would work the same without having to cut any wood

    Anything is better than sleeping in a tent! I occasionally go camping in my 2005 Pontiac Vibe. The great thing about it is that when the rear seats are folded down, the back of the seats and cargo area are perfectly level with each other. I think this feature should be required by law for all hatchbacks! Sadly, my Vibe is getting worn out. And it seems to be impossible to find another one that does not have a huge number of miles on it. Awesome vehicle!

    I am six feet tall and have a Nissan Versa Note. You can make far more room by sliding the passenger seat fully forward and putting the seatback as fully forward as possible. Then you need some support on the floor in front of the back passenger seat to create the same level as the folded down back seat and rear platform, and it makes room for a space where I can sleep quite comfortably on a rolling memory foam mattress tailored to that size.

    I do something very similar in my Skoda Octavia but have wooden planks screwed under the board - it is a shallower space than yours but l like your way better.
    I also only use the wider half of the back seat for my bed so that my cooking box sits in the boot space alongside the bed, or can be moved outside for cooking or onto a seat overnight.
    The small half of the back seat stays as a seat, with a seatback organiser on it and usually clothing bags etc. On the seat or in the footwell.

    Unlike many, your rear seats appear to drop fully flat, which is very important in order to sleep on a flat surface. In so many cars (hatchbacks and others), these rear sears fold but never collapse fully as to be flat. In this way you are lucky.

    I have basically the same car (Nissan Note). In my case the back part has already some specific corners and gaps to fit an official platform making it flat with the rear seats.
    Instead of buying it (about 1,000 dollars) I just made using wood (10-15 dollars).
    However how can you sleep only with that??? Do you actually sleep?? In the video when you lay down your legs were squeezing between the front seats. You even didn’t lay down the front seats.
    I am 5,11 and I have to put the front seat all the way to front and then lay them down. Plus I had to come up with another platform to fit between the front and rear seats.
    You don’t even lay the front seats down??
    Thank you!!!

    • @hobocyclist
      @hobocyclist  Před rokem

      I’ve slept in a few sedan type cars, best way I found was to sleep in the back seat with the seats pushed toward and my feet up on the seat like a hammock, kind of positioned diagonally. All the best!

    • @penguinvic9892
      @penguinvic9892 Před rokem

      Hi, I’m about the same height and have managed to grab a comfortable night’s sleep in a small Hyundai Getz. But it took a bit of trial and error to get it right.
      I simply folded forward the back seats like in the YT video. I placed cheap plastic storage boxes in the boot area to bring it up to the same level as the folded back seats. I moved the front passenger seat forward as far as possible, then tilted the seat forward. I placed a couple of cheap plastic stools in the footwell of the back seats, one with the sides cut out for the hump in the middle of the car. I placed a narrow children’s airbed over the lot, and put an old doona over the airbed. In the space between the stools and the tilted forward front seat, I simply filled with unbreakable thing at the base, carry bags of clothes, on top of that. The whole thing was still not quite level, so I placed a small number of old newspapers under it, in the low spots, and bingo, a cheap low tech bed, in my car. I found sleeping towards the front of the car, at a slight diagonal, gave the best sleep. The other way round was comfortable … until I lifted my head and bumped it on the hatchback door due to its curve. More headroom the other way around.
      Best of all with this method is it was relatively cheap to set up and all the things required could be used for other things, so no wastage.
      It also left plenty of room for other camping gear, essentials, and … okay … things to play with, like my game boy (100 classic books; solitaire; checkers, etc), my chess set, a few books, transistor radio and portable word processor with 700 hours working time on just 3 x AA batteries.
      Hope I’ve been helpful here.

      @@penguinvic9892 Awesome set up! Sounds nice and easy and possible to use in different vehicles too

    • @penguinvic9892
      @penguinvic9892 Před rokem

      Don’t know much about the Passat sedan but did see a YT video review that showed the back seats folded down in the forward position to give access to the boot. If the front seats fold forward, then you should be able to improvise a setup where a narrow airbed be inserted into the boot and various objects like plastic storage boxes / stools etc placed in the back passenger seat area footwell to support this. In the space between the plastic storage boxes stuff your carry bags with clothes or cushions. With a bit of luck you might cover your height. A problem might be the limited space height between the back seats and entrance to the boot area. You could only sleep one way in this set up, and that’s head toward the front of the car and feet in the boot area. That’s where hatchbacks have it over sedans.
      If your car is brand new or newish, I wouldn’t recommend anything that might damage the interior. Also, check to make sure your backseats will carry the weight required without being damaged. Somehow I don’t think the Passat was ever designed as a sleeping / camping car, so good luck.
      My Getz is quite old, so I’m fairly laidback about experimenting with it for camping purposes.

      @@hobocyclist Thanks for the kind reply. One thing though. My bed arrangement placed my body at window level, so something to block out people staring in would be required i.e. curtains or tinted windows. I used the plastic from a torn camping tent.
      Good luck with whatever you do.

      @@Veritasnetwork this design rather than being for getaway camping (although it can be used for that!) is in case of need for emergency housing and increases comfort when faced with living in a car. For bathroom access i would rather use public facilities at places like shopping malls- (often kept very clean). universities sometimes have showers you can use for free too!

    Nice design for installing platform bed with ample storage beneath. However, the problem of accessing the storage units arises with the necessity of having to remove the main plank in order to get at the cubicles - and having to remove the bicycle, mattress, etc. I envision would be on TOP of the plank first would present a real pain in the rare event that one might need something inside that storage. Sorry, but I much prefer designs with side access to storage - it's more convenient, albeit more expensive and more difficult to create.

      In place of this you could buy 2-3 small cheap plastic containers that were level with the folded down seats. I put 2 plastic stools in the back seat footwell, moved the front passenger seat forward, tilted forward and a small narrow airbed in the space provided. All I had to do was modify one of the plastic stools due to the hump in the centre in the floor of the car. I’m no handyman but even I managed that. Just stuff some luggage in the space between the tilted front seat and the stools, and you should get a reasonable night’s sleep.
