    As a woodworker myself. Not currently, but I stole dabble in from time to time. I want to reassure you that your skills are amazing. Except for the very beginning. But you taught yourself and you remembered so there's nothing else that needs to be said. With that also your commentary skills and video recording are top-notch. You get your point across with a standard guide with easy listening. So with that I say Bravo awesome video. Great commentary great style and you also make sure that people feel comfortable and even if they do make mistakes it's okay. But you make that reassuring and easy to say well you know, we'll just have to do it again. You don't make it so it's one way. That's it. So again congratulations!! A great video

    I had an ‘06 Forester, which I loved, but, for me, there was not enough head room for sleeping and that’s just with 3” of memory foam directly on the floor. I’m in a pop-top micro van from Japan now with an 8” air mattress on the not-exactly-flat rear seats. This works and when I’m not using it, I have 2 small, rear bench seats. So it can function as my daily driver as well as camping van. Still, If I had the skills, (and energy) I would be building something myself. In the meantime I’ll just enjoy your video and others like it. Thank you 🌸

    Interesting...very nice mod, and you gave me some good ideas to think about. I'm doing the same modification to my 4WD Suburban for use in my photo expeditions...8 feet of sleeping room, plus much more for storage. Slide out drawers will give me concealment to keep photo gear hidden from prying eyes. Luckily, due to the interior height, I can go with deeper drawers and still have enough headroom.

    I love it. I did something similar in my Subaru Impreza Hatchback... I have one suggestion - put some support/legs at the front of the platform going all the way to the rear seat passengers floor. The foam in rear seats will colaps a little bit under the wight of the structure so after couple of day/weeks it can be un-level or wobbly. It happened to me so I´ve removed rear seats all together and made support structure/with extra storage instead of them. The other great thing about that I have excuse for not driving my mother in law with us since the car is 2 seater now :D . I wish Nathan good luck with his car. Car camping is cheap, comfy and huge fun. Cheers :)

    • @joanies6778
      @joanies6778 Před 8 měsíci +1

      That is what I am thinking about doing... but only remove one rear seat, on the driver's side. I discovered if I remove the headrest on my front passenger seat, push the seat all the way forward, the back will go all the way down, and lines up exactly with the back seat. That rear seat back also reclines a little, too. I just need a filler pillow for my feet to keep them level. It makes a good sized bed, though. Had my Lexus suv for 20 years and just now finding this out.
      Anyway, I will leave one seat and the middle piece, and remove the second rear seat if I do long term camping, but still have a rear seat for my dog when not using it as a bed. It will give me tons of extra storage space and a little leg room sitting sideways when the "bed" is laid out.
      Leaving one seat will counter balance weight from all the storage on the driver side. I also think about quick getaways if being harrassed... I think it's better to have the driver seat up and ready to roll, if necessary. I do lose a little storage capability, but thinking I can gain it in the back by moving my tire to the roof rack. If I have a flat, I won't have to move all that stuff out of the way, and there's a ton of storage under there. I 'll just have to build so I can access it.

    Love the video, but some ideas if you do it again. Use 12mm ½ inch ply. If you can get light weight ply go for that. That is what the custom drawer builders use here in Australia. And we do have a lot of 4WDs here down under and we all have or need drawers in the back. Also consider Teflon drawer slides, light weight, low to no maintenance, and gives more room for drawer storage. Also I would like to have the unit anchored to the car ror a cargo barrier. Again what we do here, sure beats getting a head full of ply in a frontal collision.
    That fridge sure won’t hold much beer. 😬
    Again keep doing what you do, love your work.

    From experience he may find hinging the cupboard door the other side is more useful so you can reach into it from outside the vehicle more easily. I actually subscribed to your channel some months ago to learn how to make cupboards for my second van build. I have learned so much from you during lockdown here in GB. Varnished wood is so practical as a sand and re-varnish deals with scuffs and scratches.

      Good tip. That’s exactly the addition I’d like to make to that cover where he tucks the Coleman stove. I’m going to hinge it as well as adding like a triangle shaped piece of wood beneath for support... or something there to support the weight of sink filled w water...then do a cut out for my collapsible sink. Then it’s outside the car for draining without lifting it. But then u just smash it back flat in the cutout and close cover and Bobs your uncle!

    This kicks butt on the sleeping platform I built in the bed of my Ranger w/ camper shell. It was perfect for a college kid working in the driveway of the apartment. The platform sat on top of the wheel wells with the perfect space for Rubbermaid storage tubs. One for the kitchen. One for dry food. One for the dry clothes. One for kayaking gear. Plus extra room for paddles and an 8’ bed and fatty mattress. Aaaaaaa, the good ol days.

    If you would have made a door in the top of the bed part, and taken the top of the spare tire compartment off, you could access that compartment and made it available for more storage. The drawers underneath could have also been long and wedge shaped, again increasing storage. Of course you would also have had to make a door in the bottom of the one drawer to access the spare well. Mount the solar panel on a rooftop box and......voila, more storage as well! Nice job!

    However I would have taken out the back seat to avoid d having to raise the platform... thereby giving more headroom & storage under the platform where the seats had.been.. it would have also allowed for access to the now empty spare tire space for storage by creating an access panel...
    Of course not taking the seats out allows for a quick change back to a regular vehicle..

Make camping a breeze when everything you need is in the truck already... just grab some food, your keys, and hop in and go. Mine ended up being permanent though... 2 large drawers, a full size bed on the platform, all rear (2nd and 3rd row both) seats removed, a set of cabinets up against the front seats, etc. Nothing like a 4 wheel drive tent to really camp anywhere you want to... lol.

You learn very quickly that sitting up inside is an absolute must, along with being able to cook inside when it rains all day (cooking under the tailgate just does not work in heavy rain), oh and being able to access the storage without popping the tailgate every five seconds, found all that out after my conversion and ended up stripping it all out to address those problems. Still, as I said, yours is good for summer camps/warm climates.

      Hi. Where can we see your build?
      Do you think a large awning is good enough for cooking in the rain?

Minivan are crazy useful and I will look to them for value buys for the business in the future. They actually really go when you put the peddle down too

    Brilliant. Me and my dog car camp in our Ford focus estate. No conversion.. I would love a small box unit though like part of this for storage. I just have fold up table and chairs strapped to the side, large dog bed behind the passenger front seat. I sleep on 2 fold up waterproof three section camping mattresses on the other side. A well insulated cool box which can keep food cold for 48 hours with the freeze packs in it. A plastic lidded box holds everything else needed - cooker, utensils, dry food spare gas, lantern etc etc. The fold down oblong wash up basin holds the dog's water bowl from spilling when driving. Light at night by solar garden wall lights - very bright! Put string through the holes meant for screws and you can hang them up a inside or out. Emergency toilet a tight lidded round plastic box that stores under driver's seat. A few power banks for recharging phone and tablet. A tarp and some plastic electric fence poles for making an awning off the roof rails over the rear door if wet. Front passenger seat and well area holds two 5 litre water bottles, rucksack, boots etc. Have opening roof window for ventilation. Bubble wrap cut to window sizes for insulation - spray windows with water and that holds the bubble wrap to them. Also gives a little privacy in daylight if you want that. And I carry a two person tent. Can bring my bike mounted in the tow bar if I wish. It's basic but it works.

    Ok well another old lady here chiming in!!.. I think you just made my kids dreams come true! Thank you so much for that! Did you know there's this crazy sugar beet thing?.. well you HAVE to send them a pic of your setup before they'll hire you. So I'm getting Loganberry a Honda Pilot (I hope) and with your setup she's gonna be sugar beet QUEEN! And after, she can finally fulfill her dream of living in her car (I guess that's when we call it a "micro-camper") thanks again from my soon to be Millennial Nomad ❤️

  • @500846

    Why didn’t you utilise the spare wheel well? The perfect place for a water system. Make a fibreglass water container or even just some water jugs hooked together with hoses. You could get all fancy and put an air compressor in the wasted space behind the tail lights and pressurise the water tank to have running water.

    • @Mr.StealYoBacon
      @Mr.StealYoBacon Před 2 lety +3

      @@geographyinaction7814 @Geography in Action It would probably be another 50 lbs. to add/create a 5 gallon or so water tank filled up with a portable water pump set up. So I'd say it wouldn't be an issue to build that into the spare tire well.

    This was cool! I'm in the middle of building out my camper van and while it won't be anything like this, I love seeing how others "make it work". I only have one question - is the baltic wood in the long drawer going to hold up to constant use? Seems to me it might be a little bit too lightweight, but hey, what do I know?!? Anyways, just a question - love the way this turned out! I've been binge watching your vids and they've helped me out a ton since I'm no woodworker and doing this all myself. So THANKS!!!

    • @johnlee7085

      Baltic birch is a hardwood. It is much more durable than basically any other plywood you can get. It’s great to work with as well but definitely heavier.
