How To Convert a Small Car into a Micro Camper

- I have road-tripped and lived in, or out of, trucks, SUVs, RVs and now a Ford Fiesta. She isn't bigger than a standard 4-door Fiesta but she does have some unique innovations inside that mean I can camp out of her and sleep comfortably in her when I take a multi-night road-trip in the UK.
See how I make this conversion work for me (someone shortish) and still live comfortably for days on the road. Life has to be simple and stuff has to be minimalistic...and this has been a much requested video in people asking how I make it work.
So this video is how I use my Ford Fiesta as a micro-camper, comfortably, with me and two 30lb border collies. And yes, we all sleep well.

Apologies for the sound at the 2min mark. Not sure what happened but it is short-lived. What I am talking about is where I keep my head-lamp and how it is extremely versatile in that location. In the door I keep a blue shower curtain as seat cover for the front seat and also where I keep my stove and spoon.
Thank you! That head lamp use idea, as a reading or task light is super. I’ve been storing the headlamp on the headrest and only just started using it in situ, without removing it and strapping it on my head. Your suggestion to remove the 60% seat is a good one, then my living area is bigger than my sleeping area which mirrors life in an apartment and makes more sense, I appreciate your time and ideas.
Big respect to this lady.. and 2 dogs.
Who would ever thought that possible in such a small car.
This is fantastic.
Weldone ... very inspiring
Thank you :-)
I have a Ford Fiesta hatchback and I’ve converted it into a camper as well! I did mine slightly different. It’s cool to see that I’m not the only one camping out of my lil Fiesta! 😁
Good deal. It certainly takes some thinking outside the box to make it work...but I like that it's so stealthy...most people aren't going to think someone is camping in a Fiesta when parked up for the night. Less obvious than a van.
If you can make a video!
Why are earth do you put yourself through something like this living in that little car I feel sorry for the dogs that’s just the craziest thing you do I just can’t believe you show where your laundry is where your food is just would be ashamed to show all that can’t you just rent a little apartment and live like a normal person does with your two dogs
@@gordonfinch4446 dude go work your ass off for a house and than come back crying in your debt. Don't judge other's people choices, most of the time they have another point of view that's years away from yours. Learn to respect.
And btw what you're saying is insane cause food and laundry stay together even if you're backpacking, this shows how little you know
@@gordonfinch4446 way to go making the assumption that they live in their car, you can own a car and own or rent a house at the same time, they aren't mutually exclusive.
I guess you've never spent a night under canvas either Gordon, too much effort for you I imagine.
It's no different to pitching a tent in terms of hassle, in fact one could say its considerably less hassle given its literally moving a seat forward and rolling out a bed vs unpacking and pitching a tent and it clearly works well for her and her dogs.
Appreciating nature is not about luxury. With minimum provisions and your little friends, you redifined the GOOD LIFE. Thank You, I am inspired.
Agree, in every way. Thank you for your lovely comment and glad you found yourself inspired by this video...hope you get out for some great adventures :-)
I tried this in a fiesta.... the best item I purchased was a volvo v70 estate.
This is without doubt the best ( non van ) micro stealth camping vehicle ever made .
I also fitted a tow bar with full electrics enabling the addition of a caravan ...GAME CHANGER .
Nice. I moved up to a Touran and love it. It's like the VW Caddy but with windows
@@WilderhopeAdventures
Impressive, I like the touran......much more room than my v70 ..I almost bought a Ford galaxy ...I like the v 70 because my dad had one .
Ingenious. It's truly amazing that you've achieved so much in such a small space and even your two dogs get to travel in style. Really enjoyed your enthusiasm for this way of travelling, so well done. Stay safe.
Thank you for the lovely comment and the feedback on the conversion. Have some improvements to work on over the winter before I head out again
I dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the login password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Princeton Merrick Instablaster :)
@Salvador Keaton i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Salvador Keaton It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you really help me out!
What a clever set up for a tiny small car
Wow. Can’t believe u got it all in. Great setup
Thanks. It has taken a year to get it to this point...got some upgrades to do over winter, now that I'm working fulltime too
Very inspiring, we all need an escape route! I toured Scotland in my Ford fusion for 10 days and I was so comfy. I want to make it more stable like you have. I might end up living in mine full time so I want a roof rack and box eventually. As I was alone in my trip I was able to pee ok in the car, and do a full body wash, but I missed showers, as everywhere was closed on my trip. Thank you for being such an inspiration to us out here. You are appreciated very much.
IS I just subscribed to your channel!
Thanks for the sub and the lovely words. Sounds like your Scotland trip was pretty amazing. I have two road trips currently in editing that will be posted between now and June. Scotland is still on my list to do though
Ford Fusion owner here! How did you do your sleeping set up?
@@rooeykate Hi, sorry it took me so long to reply.... I have a 2' 6'' bed on the passenger side. At night I just push the front seat forward and the back rest too.. I was very comfortable indeed. I cooked outside and kept my stuff behind the drivers side in boxes and I had my mattress on top of storage too. I am 5' 6'' so height might be harder for you if you are very tall.
Yes she is a practical down to earth person. Refreshing. Can’t be doing with solitary hermits , who have room for nothing but themselves and their Buddhist prayer mats.
That's a clever set up, I'm really fond of this. My car is extremely tiny but I want to try something out, and you definitely gave me ideas for a good start. That's great, and so cool the dogs have their own space ❤️🐶
Go for it! Really glad to hear this helped you out with some ideas for you going forward.
Thanks for this, great ideas. Have bigger car and am only 4'11", so sure can make it work. Awesome that you get both dogs in too.
Great to hear. Anything bigger is a plus...I miss the size of the estate I had, but not the mechanical issues. Thanks for watching :-)
Like with minimalism generally, there is something calming about doing things simply in life.
I've just started playing with a simple setup in my Berlingo car 👍
Couldn't agree more :-) Good luck with however you get your car set up and may it lead to many adventures
Love it, everything has its place and it's so neatly organized.
Thank you. In such a small space it has to be extremely organized but it works so well
Very informative and a great set up. I was pleasantly surprised at just how effective it all seems to be. Best wishes, Chris
Thank you. Crazy what you can fit in a small space if you try
Looking at doing something similar in my small car and you’ve really inspired me with your wooden platform to make a. More storage and b. The boot level with the back seats. Also your rolled foam mattress looks great. Thanks for this video.
Really good to hear that the video has been helpful and given you ideas. I ordered my mattress in a custom size measured to the space from GB Foam Direct and can highly recommend them...super comfortable and fits great
Maybe a tarp with magnets when it rains to put over you while you cook a bit...would help a lot...😊
This is great. Love the storage in the back. I have a fiesta that I use for when I go fishing so that has definitely given me some ideas 🙂
Thank you. Love to hear when my set up has given others ideas to make use of that have. I can fit my fly rods in the gap between the folded seat back and the floor since I took the base out...useful little spot for fishing gear
Lovely idea! I have a three door but would love to give it a go. Thanks for posting 😊
The three door Fiestas are actually pretty good as the front seats move/tilt further forward because if access. You can definitely make it work :-)
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! I got some really helpful ideas from you. Brilliant!
Glad it was helpful :-) Happy adventuring
Priorities 8:10 😂 ... Super micro camper! I love that platform that you've made so clever for storing your gear 👌
Thanks...lol. And appreciate the feedback...glad you liked the platform. Was an interesting project...took some thinking outside the box
You could do with a tailgate tent for shade and shelter … they are great … and you can cook in all weather … plus use a bladder shower and loo in privacy …I car camp regularly … very cheap … wishing you well … 🙏☘️😘
I've actually been looking into them, although not stealthy for the kind of camping I do (99% non-campsite camping). Would be good for campsites or just up for day time bad weather though.
@@WilderhopeAdventures
Understand completely … I use the Dongbin hatchback/ tailgate awning/ tent ish thing … fits securely in most weather, waterproof, has a fly net and an optional put up awning (thus isn’t sturdy, but good for sun) …cost around 60e a few years back … now this I wouldn’t be without.
… I use my tent version only when I’m staying at friend’s land … the very odd occasion when I use a campsite they’re great to leave up to “mark my territory” 😀 when I go shopping or whatever !
Like yourself I travel off the beaten track and being stealthy means I can sleep anywhere, even in main streets of major cities … and down or up narrow twisty paths … this is the advantage of car camping …
I’m not long back from car camping in Portugal, Spain and Ireland (in a Santa Fe) … Im 60 plus solo female intending to go full time nomad … I’ve been looking at loads of camper vans … they have got so expensive … and I think I probably need a self build as 4wheel drive, higher suspension and all terrain tyres is what I need to go fully off track and fully nomad, so it needs to carefully designed for full-time living … more time and money is required !
So as an intermediate compromise (coz I’m planning Portugal again in November) just picked up a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, for a couple of thousand (cheap) … so I’ll do some adjustments to exterior of this, but, currently designing its interior … (my Hyundai Santa Fe may look big but interior so awkward not suitable for long term travel and it’s 18 years old ! )
I am so pleased that younger solo females are beginning to have the confidence to get out there and live on the wild side … there wasn’t the opportunities for nomadic living and working in my younger days … so from 17 I’ve had many car campers, camper vans, even a couple of small caravans … I travelled at every opportunity (during holidays and week ends) on the ‘Continent’ (as it was known then, now Europe) … later with two children I travelled around Ireland and UK … this was long long before nomadic living was in vogue and solo female travelling unheard of !!!
Being over 60 I’m not as bendy as I used to be !!! 😀 so I know soon I’ve gotta upsize, especially for full time travelling … I pass this ‘potted history’ on to you by way of supporting your adventures and hopefully on those days when you’re feeling a little cramped you’ll remember as a young , fit , healthy , adventurous woman you are so blessed to be car camping for real hard to reach , spectacular nooks of the country you are in … leave the bigger rigs for us oldies ! 😅😂
Embrace your lifestyle as time sure does fly in … sending you love , light , happiness , health , positivity and peace … 🙏☘️😘
@@portugalonawingandaprayer473 Hi Hazel and thanks for your reply. Love a little bit of sage advice to share with others...while no spring chicken myself anymore I do appreciate being able to crawl into a Fiesta still, although my recent upgrade is to a Touran...mostly for a fixed bed and the ability to sit up in bed, as well as less faff for setting up and take down, esp in bad weather. The Touran isn't much bigger than the Fiesta in reality so still fits in some of those great nooks others can't go in bigger vehicles (just barely long enough for a fixed bed for me at 5'5").
I'm going to look into the awning you suggested so thanks for that 😃Take care and have a lovely day😁
Brava!!! I'll do it with my Fiesta! Thank you for sharing
Glad you found some inspiration in this video :-)
I have a Ford Fiesta too and this is perfect because I’ve been thinking of converting my car! Thanks for this great video!👏🏼

Really ingenious, very well thought out. Good luck .....Take care, Jack.
Thank you. Appreciate the comment :-)
Absolutely loved this video, and you have inspired me to go out in my fiesta this weekend, lovely to see you take your dogs as well, bless your soul, thank you
Thank you...glad it was helpful. Hope you have some epic adventures in your Fiesta
Very clever conversion 👍
Thank you. It's been fun using it too :-)
Wow! It's great! Not expensive and yet of good quality! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Yeah; I like to work with what I have and upcycle what I can if I have it. Have added some window shades since this video and I've done lots of nights in it...and been very comfortable. Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing this video and your insights!! You've literally inspired one person here on earth ✌️ I had been traveling on my motorcycle with all the stuff till last December. But now I think I'm gonna use the small car n experiment with it ✨
Have a wonderful life ahead 👍 keep shining 🌟
Thanks for leaving such a lovely comment. I hope you are able to make the small car work for you and that there are many adventures ahead with it. Take care
Absolutely fantastic video! I like your setup, your matter-of-fact presentation, and your enthusiasm. Many thanks!
Thank you...very kind. And a lovely comment to wake up to on a Friday morning
I love that you go camping with your dogs. I want to go camping with my dog in my SUV. I’m inspired!
Definitely go for it...dogs make everything better
Must have missed this video when you first posted it. This is really creative CJ. Certainly nothing stopping you from travelling anywhere for your adventures once Covid restrictions allow.
Definitely been the one that has brought the most traffic to my channel. Been out with it a lot....Yorkshire, Devon, Cornwall etc...all upcoming adventure/roadtrip videos. And hopefully more to come in the not to distant future
This is great and very helpful as I have a Kia Rio 5 which seems to be around the same size as your Ford Fiesta. And I measure 64 inches. You’ve given me great ideas on how I could sleep in my car while I’m camping. Happy trails to you!
Glad this video was helpful and happy camping
Wow 😳 I have a 2019 fiesta and I’ve wondered how to make it work, now I know. Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful and happy adventuring :-)
That is super cool! Fiesta is a great car! I once converted a 3-door hatch into a full on coffee car! )
Thank you. I kinda miss it a bit now I've gone for something bigger. That's pretty cool about your coffee car
love your camping stove set up
I've had a thirsty Fiesta in the past, now in a 6 year old ultra eco Bmax with acres more space, seats go flat but basically same chassis as a smaller hatchback
Recommend a 12v plug in shower for those out of the way spots, one end suctions onto car,the other in bucket of hot water..I think mine was around £15 online
(Or Indian style bucket wash inside largest IKEA storage unit works too!)
I have been tempted by those but with limited privacy and space I have put the idea of a shower aside for now. I used a solar shower when my truck was my roadtripping vehicle in the US and there were millions of acres of public land to find privacy. I like the Bmax though...when it's time to sell I will look at something bigger
Love it. Wicked reminds me of wot Americans do at wall mart and stuff. With blackout window screens and so on Watch a few channels on boon docking and so on carcamping there all in America some some of them live all year round doing it as well I think it’s awesome myself great video Cj
I used to be a full-time nomad in the US...only ever lived in one place longer than six months and to this day I still consider it home.
Making the best of it while you can ..like the way you set it up ..Don't know how you manage with 2 dogs but works for you ..That's for sharing..
Thanks....it's a tight squeeze with two dogs but at least it stays warm!
Very inspirational video, thanks for sharing your experience and tips 🙂
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it

Nicely done, I used to have an old Honda Civic Areodeck, it was great for kipping in. My next car is possibly going to be a mini van like a VW Caddy or similar.

Greetings from UK :)

@@lukejefferson7822 Nice. Hope you can make it work for you...sounds like a good trip
Great setup in your Fiesta! You could add a tarp over the boot when it’s open to the ground with pegs while you are cooking/changing etc.
Thanks
Thanky you. I had thought about something like that, especially for days when it is raining and I want to be able to cook. I haven't quite figured out how to do it yet but it is a concept in the works. Thanks for reminding me
I use a simple car cover and some magnets to fix it on one side of the rooftop. When I open the back door to this side, it creates a small covered space. Enough to change clothes and have some kind of privacy.
Some shower curtains have magnets in hems, wonder if those could attach upside down to outside of hatch?

I got stuck in a room with a freight-train snorer at a bunkbarn this wknd and decided to escape and experiment with sleeping in my car for the first time ever. I have a Suzuki Alto and you couldn't get any smaller really, without it being a smartcar. All i had the first night was a pillow & my wildswimming dryrobe and it was a revelation that it was actually so comfortable (i tend to be happy curled up anyway) with no special set up at all. On the second night, rather than have everyone switch beds (which they did offer to do to be fair), i chose to just sleep out in my car again. This time i had a duvet under me folded over in places to provide cushioning for the slope of the seats (not super successful but a bit flatter at least) and wedged some stuff in one of the back footwells to give myself a bit more room for my legs. Absolute luxury compared with the first night and on both nights, about a million times better than dealing with a freight train in the room. I'm sold on tiny car camping.
Nice. It's like traveling with a bit of home with you; no sharing room space, or dealing with snoring people. Make it your own :-)
Loved it. Very informative. After 5? years of Suzuki Altos I'm now the proud owner of a 2006 Vauxhall Meriva. Looking fwd to attempting some sort of conversion on that. My problem is I can watch hours of fantastic videos like these, by which time it's dark outside and I'm less inclined to get up and go and do something. I think it's termed laziness 🙂
Thank you. Sounds like you have a good plan there...those videos are addictive though...easy to get distracted
Just start out to live in my car for about 2 weeks now and doing okay so far ! I don't know how long I will have to live in my car, but as long as I have to when I don't have other options. The thing I love to rather live in my car than living with family's members on their property is that freedom. Even living with my brother still not okay sometimes because he has his own family and his own life and sometimes we still have a little disagreement between each others, so I think living on my own even in my Toyota sedan is still a better choice so I don't have to rely on anybody and have to live under their rules. I am free like a dove now !!!
There is definitely a kind of freedom that comes from living that way. Good luck to you and I hope everything goes okay. Take care of yourself :-)
You’re a legend! Great video and nice setup.
I appreciate that! Thank you
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you :-)
I love your video and your spirit!❤️
Awe, thank you :-)
Excellent and with large dogs I could imagine what you would do with a minivan 👍
Thank you :-) I just upgraded to a VW Touran which is a small mini-van...video tour of that was released 2 weeks ago
@@WilderhopeAdventures oh your going to make a mansion out of that ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Oh my God it was so much more room your so lucky I wanted a nizan access quest because they can add ramps to it but I think 🤔 this is better
@@marthagonzalez5528 Absolutely. The VW Sharan has sliding doors and is slightly bigger which would be perfect, but I love my Touran
wow ... im impressed by you fair doos
Hi and thank you :-)
I have a Subaru xv and have done something similar.....it is a blessing being shorter 5"1 makes it easier to sleep in a car....thanks for sharing 🙂👍
Totally agree! Glad you enjoyed the video
I’m about to do same in my 2007 Ford Focus. Plenty of room with seats folded down, thanks for a few ideas I’m going to be taking into my car camper! See you around UK!
Glad I could be of some help...hope you have many adventures in your Focus
Great video thankyou . Really good ideas and layouts 👍
Thank you. The Fiesta build was really helped me narrow down what things were priority (fixed bed, no faff) in the Touran
