      So true!
Really bugs me when everyone’s jumping on his videos saying “you need to get a van” “a van would do a much better job”.
      I mean state the obvious!!
Unfortunately not everyone has the luxury of spending 10s of thousands of pounds on a new van and have to make do with what they have and what they already own!
This video just proves you don’t need a fancy van to make it work!
      Just a shame Alex isn’t a foot shorter 😂

Very true, I agree it doesn't have to be a big camper van . I have converted my small astra van into a micro camper that blends in nicely for stealth camping 😁czcams.com/users/shortszUNWh5Z0F_4?feature=share

@@elenapill7542 You can get a used van in working condition for less than 2000 pounds. I don't think anyone was suggesting that Alex should buy a brand new van. He could sell his car and get a van for that money no problem. But he mentioned that he doesn't want to do that because he likes his car too much, which is fair enough I guess.

For anyone saying your not doing your bit for society, you are !!, I’m currently going through the toughest patch of my life after losing the biggest part of my life just days ago, I found this video late at night after struggling to sleep and it made me not feel better but eased me a little, I know that may not seem like a lot but after feeling like crap for a little while that means the world and I tell you that I am definitely not the only one who has been effected (helped) like this.

Caravan travelers or whatever they are called (commercial bought vehicles) are WORSE then someone having fun in a cheap and productive manner. Alex is truly the first one I have seen that tries to camp in there vehicle before buying a van and making a heavy wood mess DIY camper here on CZcams. Journey from the begging that is. Not forced to live in there car just having fun. Really joining the army is mindless and dum. Picking wild garlic and making CZcams content displaying real life not made up shit is about as good you can get in life. Not going to war or school doing stuff for others interest. Being a good puppy and doing others work for them as they sit in there boss chair with 3x the earnings. That is the right thing?
Working with bees and going out in the woods picking food sounds dull, but to call it not productive or mindless is just wrong. It is living a dam life as a peaceful animal. And not some Smart society war/hate no care about real life matters drone.

I'm in the process of changing my car into a camper: I'm almost 69yrs old, I've worked or studied all my life, raised 3 kids, have 10 grandkids, and I'm no longer beholden to anyone or anything. I fully intend to devote the rest of my life to doing exactly what I want to do. My lifelong plan for retirement was to visit every village in Scotland that had a pub and at least one shop. Unfortunatly I left it too late, as I always envisioned it as a walking/ public transport project: now I'm disabled and that is no longer possible. So, on to plan B. Driving around the country, camping in my car, a Citreon C4, which is an estate-type car, with my mobility scooter and my 2 dogs, occasionally accompanied by various lovely grandchildren. The point of the story is this: follow your dreams while you can, don't leave it too late, and adapt as you go along. Nothing is impossible if you still have some spirit. Oh, and the most important thing: if you're car camping you MUST insulate your windows. I've used the reflective yoga-style mats, cut to size and they are perfect, cheap, and easy to store. Also, cover any exposed metal on the interior with the stretchy car carpet fabric you can buy on eBay or Amazon and that will dramatically cut down on condensation and heat loss. Good luck.

The stove problem might be because of the cold. I'm guessing that you're using butane, it has problems with cold performance and pretty much stops working once you get down to freezing temperatures. Campers/hikers tend to use Isobutane fuel for cold weather camping as it will work down slightly lower (down to about -11C) but I've only ever seen Isobutane fuels in those tiny bottles that is used with pocket stoves (Jetboil and MSR Pocket Rocket type stoves). If your stove can also use propane that would solve the problem, propane works well below what isobutane will do. Might need to search and see if a propane adaptor will work for your stove or you might need to buy a new stove that uses propane. Since it's car camping, you probably have plenty of room for those 1 pound propane canisters.

    • @MacTX
      @MacTX Před 2 lety +1

@@niche.quiche It's not that economical for me to replace propane with MAPP. I can buy a 1-pound (16 ounces) bottle of propane for $5 while a bottle of MAPP (14 ounces) is $13, it's a pretty substantial price difference. The savings using a 20 pound propane bottle and an adapter is even more substantial than that. I'm also not going to be using it anywhere near the temperature (-43F) when propane stops working so that's not even a consideration. At or near freezing is the lowest temperature usage consideration.

I love to be in nature by car camping like yourself, it's such a lovely way to do it, get outside and enjoy the flora and fauna, healthy lifestyle, better than anything else I reckon. Ignore those who think they have the authority to advise you what you must be doing, we have enough of that with the policy enforcers/revenue raisers (Corporations includes fake Government, Police, Military), people can be so evil, worse than any other living thing on the planet, best to keep living, as that is what you are doing, you're actually living.

To the person that questioned what you are doing and whether you add to society - how about you focus on your own life and what you are doing rather than others?? If everybody lived by this principle, we would have a much kinder more tolerant society. Alex gives plenty to society by creating great content for thousands of people to view, by paying his way and being kind to others. He also shares how to forage of the land and how to make the most of what you have which is invaluable and a sentiment often lost on todays society. If his videos give others hope to make similar experiences and memories, then that is a great contribution on my eyes. Keep doing what you are doing, keep to your journey in your lane and hope that others will stay in theirs!

Great little set up that proves you don't need anything big. Might be useful to get a rechargable light rather than use your interior car lights, just in case you run down the car battery. The lids into the space under your bed would give you lot of storage and I agree, a drawer unit gives better access than boxes. For the window covering just get some insulation on a roll, cut to fit the windows and cover with black cloth to be more stealth like.

Haha I did this but in a Daihatsu Cuore from 2001. Went more then 2000 km alone in Sweden. Even camped out in the wild, encountered a bear... which was scary. I did not even have a matras, I slept on a wooden chair with a garden pillow and 2 other thick pillows from another chair. I started with lots of doubts but it ended up being a crazy trip I will never forget. Not very relaxing, very challenging, especially the heat wave and not having a air co turned out very hard on me, but a real adventure. Making friends along the way because of unexpected things. Just go out there! And yes people, even the tiniest car can be used for camping. I also removed the passenger seat, but slept the other way around. I found a sun chair metal frame, which I adapted to fit in the car. So the bed had a back section that was able to tilt. Underneath I had the cooking stuff and seating for travel brakes. That is why I slept the other way around. I only needed the minimal amount of wood, leaving enough room for all the camping gear under the bed. Incl a spare wheel. I never liked having the gas in the car. So at night I put it outside or under the car. Neither did I cook inside. Yours is not working due to the cold, I think, you need a different type of gas then. I used a wooden crate as storage, with a lid on the side and with a additional lose top. Both could be used as additional tables. I sat on the ground outside using the pillows from the bed and the casing of the stove to raise the lose tops a bit. Adding a pick-nick bag with all things kitchen, a spare tent just in case. A plastic bag as emergency toilet. A a4 size solar panel charging the a small battery like yours. Solar lights. As the only wise advice, don't go wild camping without proper prep. I had a GPS and always plenty of water ensuring I could take care of myself for 24 hours to wait for help. The Swedish forest are not harmless... In the end I needed that GPS because a solar flair hit us that summer and through off the navigation, while I was overheating my car with my sleeping bag... how what?! yes... I had no internet and so GPS was the only way to tell people my location. In the end my car needed repair (for a different reason while the overheating was looked into, which turned out fine) and I slept in a farm house from 1600 on top of a hill in the middle of the city... Thanks to being a scout and just calling a local group for help. I made it home safe, with my car and very enriched.

For cold nights, have a clear plastic water bottle that you can fill with hot water and put inside your sleeping bag. It helps keep you warm. During cold weather camping your head will lose a lot of heat, so learn to sleep with your head covered for when you need it. Lastly, you can buy heat pads for muscle pain that give off heat for 12 hours. Sticking one of those on your torso really helps.
Remember, just because you're camping doesn't mean you have to be uncomfortable. :). Good luck!

For covering your windows for privacy, try getting a sheet of rigid foamboard insulation, maybe 1" thick or so... cut it to fit snug, and then either paint them nice, or cover them with fabric. then they are easy-in easy-out lightweight, and insulating.

I think what you're doing is actually really clever, your starting off at the (very minimal & basic) beginning. As you grow you can make more videos and provide viewers with a "timeline" a story to follow, something to look forward to, and for potential new viewers to look back on. But also you maximise your video content potential.
Imagine you started with a full camper van... you'd instantly lose the sense of growth & experience.
Initially I did think, oh man he's not doing any research and is coming off a bit hap hazard with a hint (don't hate me) of "cba" lol ...but just because that's not how I'd do it, doesn't mean it's not the right way.
Then I realised you're learning as you go and bringing us along for the ride.
I can't wait to see the growth in the future. Keep up the good work!
P.s. if you live life without a direction then you're not limited on where you can go ;)

Great video as usual for privacy rather than wood buy some bubble insulation and cut it to size and attach with velcro, that way you can fold it up fir better storage plus it will insulate the car better and keep you warmer. You could always cover it with some 4 way stretch carpet to make it look better👍

I had a 2000 Ford Taurus Wagon that was ideal for sleeping on trips or camping when arriving in a bloody downpour. The rear seat folded down to a perfect flat deck 3 meters long and pretty wide. The deck had a lower storage (pretty big) under a flat hatch.
I just stuck a twin or double inflatable mattress back there. On long trips with my wife, one could sleep while the other drove. No changes to the car at all.
Miss that car. Lasted 16 years. We have a Focus Saloon now...so no way.

Great videos Alex, keep them coming please 👍 A little request if I may; please don't cut all the leaves and flowers off a garlic plant. The plant makes a lot of its nourishment via what grows on the surface. If you remove all the foliage it weakens the plant and wild garlic doesn't have a large store of food in its small bulb. Thanks

ive found that no matter what you do in life you will always get people that dislike or have an opinion on what your doing wether it be a good or a bad one and i think we just have to learn to filter the opinions or just not listen at all and do it your own way. dont listen to the ‘drainers’ because they dont think on the same wavelength as the ‘radiators’ that will say keep doing what your doing 💪🏻👏🏼

Marvellous. Wrt storage issue, don't do a cupboard as in hinges etc. just get yer man with the tracksaw to cut you a hatch , with a finger hole so you can lift it up, and Bob could very well be your uncle. Some areas of the country have issues with 'Foragers' 'harvesting large quantities of Wild Garlic, because it's trendy in restaurants at the moment. Thanks for posting.

I'd love to see you go back to this build. I think the bed needs a latch system at the front half so you can access underneath it. Your storage space needs some work and maybe a better way to cook. If possible, a roof rack with one of those storage box things would be really good and would clear up that inside space for you to possible make a kitchen. Otherwise it's actually a really neat lil space and that bed looks great.

You are doing something with your life, you are being creative and pushing boundaries in your quest to create the smallest camper.
I have a Nissan Elgrand camper conversion, a fairly small camper. Not small enough to dismiss but not big enough to spend too much time in comfortably, it also drinks fuel. I'd like to travel to Europe in a camper but one that isn't going to cost too much in fuel initially.
I also own a VW Polo, which is very economical and which I love. I started wondering if it would be possible to create a tiny camper in a Polo and I came across your channel. I have been thinking about this a lot recently and if you plan to keep moving around whilst travelling and the weather is decent, a Polo is ideal. In terms of cost, it is probably one of the cheapest ways of driving abroad and with a small awning and some window covers, you are set. A roof box, or even a roof tent is also a possibility to help with space.
You are designing a prototype VW Polo camper conversion, ideal for people on a tight budget and I love it!

It was interesting to hear you talk about that comment that wound you up, and I think when I was your age I felt very similarly. As you get older your perspective changes a bit though ... and to be honest, I wish someone had taken me aside and gave me the benefit of their wisdom a little earlier. My parents were very easy going and permissive, and just let me find my own way. I now find myself 41 years old, with a 3 year old daughter. Having fun is important, but I've found a new depth of meaning, purpose and responsibility as a parent that I imagine to be a pretty universal response. Honestly it makes me sad that I left things so late ... we're too old now to give my daughter a sibling, and if she leaves it late to start a family too then I may never live to see grandchildren. These things matter so much, so advice I would give to younger folk is have fun, but don't leave it too late to get serious.

Totally amazing Alex, could you make a shelf to fit where the parcel shelf would go and mount some boxes up on there for easy access and make more room on the floor space to use ? I am an old time camper and have seen people come up with simple but brilliant ideas, windows can be covered with blackout fabric and use rubber suckers to hold them to the windows, just simple ideas do work and at a very low amount of money, just my thoughts really hoping that might help inspire you on further, you enjoy your life and do things as you want, works for me. Kind regards.

I’m only watching this video now and little did they guy who commented and said you’re being directionless would have imagine you have videos surpassing the 1 million views. But more than that, you’ve built on your story telling skills, sharing other people trades and passion which raises awareness, improving on your editing and filming skills. So if you choose to do something different you have a lot of skills in your arsenal to go do whatever the hell you want! You’re doing exactly what you should be doing! Having fun and enjoying yourself!

No one should live life based on other people's expectations or idea for what a meaningful life is. If it is reassuring to you, your adventures brought me so much entertainment, I definitely have gotten some good value from it. Best of luck to you and may you continue enjoying your life.

  • @GETGRIP
    @GETGRIP Před 2 lety

hey alex, for the privacy, try limo tint on your windows you can get it from Halfords for less than £30, or try buy some blackout film from ebay, or get some Velcro and instead of wood use material from any haberdashery shop, as wood would take up far to much space, and of course space is what you need most, and for the storage for your food, you could try a material storage, like a seat tidy that goes on the back of the front seats for children in the back, any half decent fabric person could make you one at a small costs, maybey even your mother? ive had lots of cool ideas for this as i make van conversions to sell and alot of it is keeping it basic, but space saving, large plastic boxes are not ideal, and we know you love your wooden cabinet but it does take up at least 25% of your useable floor space. as for the storage space under the bed, how about a pull out draw/worktop, it would make for some great outside cooking. i hope this helps, im happy to offer to make some drawing ideas for you to use as plans if that helps you out. along with links to the items i mentioned. have fun on your adventures and pop up to north wales some time. the weather is currently good. :)
