www.hobocyclist.com Upgrades and improvements to secondhand folding bike used for touring/bikepacking. All upgrades were made using secondhand parts. DIY style. The bike was bought secondhand for $40NZD (approx $30USD) and the parts were only a few dollars from the recycling centre. Total project cost $50NZD. After 1000km riding, my original tyres were worn. How I discovered Secondhand Folding Bikes for Bikepacking World Travel & Why you should Ride Too!
Oh almost forgot, toe grips sux dux nutx 😊
:) 👍🏆🦘☮️
I've used those toe clips. Mainly to keep my foot in the optimum contact position of the pedal. It does help. Usually I start with one foot in, then ride for a few seconds with my other foot using the flat side of the pedal. Then I've got time to put my remaining foot in the other pedal once I'm coasting.
I ride a bike daily and take the train and buses and I realized this problem early on I been searching for one but they are very expensive
I hate toe clips not for me
You got a system that works, mate. No need to change. Sure atandard sized bikes will be faster and even more efficient... But if one goes down that path, then you end up like those spandex guys with their racer bikes that cost more than a house. Just enjoy your rides and tours.
Ahaha. Man, the subtle jokes. That computer.... I am dying 😂. That's what its all about. Keep up man. One doesnt need much to have a great time. That sunset is epic.
I think you are spot on using the backpack over panniers. I've seen several youtubers ditch panniers because of the weight such as Tristian's video; "Packing for Bikepacking: everything I carry after 7 years around the world". His reasoning is compelling.
I like it.
The thing with panniers, is that one can just buy a pair and be done with. 50 litter. It's a good size for most people, waterproof is known to be reliable and they are convenient to attach and detach. That said. I love the set up you explain in other videos and did stuff like that when I was a kid and didn't have any other transportation means.
Get some thicker slick-ish tires on there too, 1.75 or more, will be more plush and less twitchy and roll just as well or better for adventuring.
I have used spd pedals, straps and clips. To be honest i am much happier with basic flat pedals. Had most of my crashes whilst clipped in. I have a 20 year-old mtb for bikepacking, works well and has lasted many miles. I am tempted to try a folder though.
Interesting to see your weather change at the same time ours does in the north. I rode with toe clips for years. They're useless without the strap so just delete them. Clip pedals replaced them. They allow you to pull up for 25% more power.
Pull up for 25% more power? This has been debunked. Stability & security yes, but more power - no.
Toe clips and securing the foot to the pedal , is about efficiency. A roadie thing. But, I agree. The hassle factor ain't worth it. The size of a folder and the ability to fit it in small spaces is a great feature, but I think the standard bike is easier to ride, in general.
You look more handsome when you re riding on your folding bike...terima kasih 👍👍
Thanks a lot for explaining everything very well about this bike. What is the price of a new one, and what is the name of it?
Giant is taking over the manual pedal bicycle world. I had my first Giant for 20 years until it was stolen. My second Giant is close to 20 years old. Giant quality is fine for commuting and easy paced touring. I agree with you about the pedal clips
I have a Giant Mtb as well and they are plenty strong. Now touring on a NorthRock bike from costco...the frame was supplied by Giant.
Flat pedals and old bikes forever! I have a 1987 kuwahara mountain bike and a 1985 Miyata Road bike for all the touring and adventuring I do. Up right swept back handle bars and the chunkiest tires I could fit on both. They will probably last another 30 years.
Ortlieb panniers are waterrproof and they should be for what they cost! Some great advice here -- thanks.
The main reason for a pedal clip is to keep your foot from slipping off the pedal if you are doing extreme mtb in all kinds of conditions, but you also don't want them to be fully clipped in so that you can still use your feet easily when necessarily. The second reason for clipping feet to a pedal is to get a bit more efficiency out of your pedalling, so you can not only push down but also pull up on the rotation. Clipping your feet to the pedal for this is better, but that makes it difficult to take your feet off the bike so strap pedals are an alternative. For relaxed bike touring neither of these are necessary of course. Although I will say, once you get used to it, clipping your foot in the pedal becomes easy and can be done without looking.
I have to ride clipless these days if I have any choice at all except for enduro or downhill mtb.
G'day Andy 🦘 you bugga ive binged your videos for two days now, never once considered a folding bike, always built my own ebikes since 45yrs old( heart attack) I'm in👍 if I find a scraped bike or near free, I'll build up a little bikepacking Monster. 😂 Got get back too my ebikepacking hobo tour, currently in Chichester state Forest NSW 🥶🥶🥶 Top vids hobo🏆🏆🏆☮️
Good on ya mate!
That is bcos Brompton ur Buying a piece of art n Human engineering. While convenntioal bike, just a steel frame with 2 wheels on it. So.... Country with lesson $$$ wont even talk about Arts.
I agree on toe clips. On my big Raleigh tourer I took the toe clips off straight away as after a few miles it was loads of hassle for reasons you mentioned! Very enjoyable video covering lots of items, thanks!
Have to be one of the strangest mods that are commonly used. I like to be able to get on / off the bike easily 😎🚲👍
Is the rear rack strong enough for a child you reckon?
Thanks for this great video. That is a great use of popped tires.
Want to sell my trinx folded bike
In the 1980s when I was a hard-up student, I mountain-biked around Cornwall for a couple of weeks , and never paid to camp anywhere. Mostly I wild-camped, but there were a couple of occasions when I arrived at legitimate campsites in the evening but found that reception was closed; so I pitched my tent anyway, slept the night, and in the morning when I was ready to leave, the reception still wasn't open, so with no honesty-box and no price list or anything on display, I just left. I did feel a bit guilty about it, but I soon got over it.
This folds way less than a Brompton. 😂
What is the wheel size of the bike shown here ?
Love this!
Inspiring videos. Keep them coming ;-)
I'm impressed with your very budget style bike packing! And enjoying over sea touring with a folding minivelo. Btw. could you teach me your folding bike brand? Tern? Dahon? Greeting from Japan.
Love all your videos hope to meet you someday on the road
Bromptons are such magnets for thieves, I'm thinking these bikes aren't cool enough to steal. 😊 Sorta. But I wouldn't push it!
Bloody legend 💯🚲🌏
👍👍👍
On this channel i prove thatbyou can travel qround the using a simple bike. In a low cost.
Yeah it works great. Bikes are inexpensive to purchase & the running cost is low. For a small price you can travel very far
This channel is a great resource. I got into folding bikes for many of the same reasons. I was looking for a simple, affordable and easy to maintain bike. I am also rather short and folding bikes also give me more options in terms of a bike that fits me well too.
Hey Andy , Thanks for another insightful video derived from hands on experience . I’m 65 . Once a year my wife and I travel to So Cal for a couple months to visit our grandson . I carry 2 bikes with us . 1 mountian bike , and 1 Dahon folder . 1 child carrier , 1 Burley travoy . The only change I’ve made to the folder was to replace the 52 tooth chain ring for a 60 tooth . I have 2 German shepherds on harnesses hooked to the bike . The mountian bike , child trailer , 2-50 # sacks of chicken food, my 230 # body weight amount is close to 400 #. The Germans pull it with ease . The only thing I’m worried about is wearing out the brakes trying to get them to slow down. Very little pedaling involved . When I go to the grocery store , I take the folder with the travoy . I fold up the whole mess and put them in the shopping cart . Less chance of theft . If I bring the dogs I lock the bike to a lamp post in the shade with a bowl of water ,and chain the dogs to the bike . I really can relate to your videos. Safe travels from Greg and family in Tacoma Washington .
Wow this is great! I like how you take the dogs to pull you along that is next level. What a genius idea!
Definitely don't undervalue food and blood sugar. I'm diabetic and had a scare one day. It wasn't with Biking but it was with Skateboarding. 100 is normal, 70 is low, 50 is medical emergency. I was feeling fine until suddenly I wasn't. My blood sugar dipped to 28. That is extremely dangerous. I bring candy and carbs just for that. Doctor said it was amazing that I didn't pass out, seizure, or go into a coma.
I like smaller wheels. The more tiny, the more cute they are. But unfortunately, if I want a bike for commuting, it's better to have bigger wheels. So I don't spend too much energy kicking the pedals for longer distances.
Any tips on repairing rust on the front fork? I bought a second hand bike recently with steel front fork. The side of the front fork has some rust on it. I would like to stop further rusts.
Mate what is you secret in long ride? Slow of fast ride?
I ride slow always. Having extra time so you don’t have to rush is the secret!
