Just want to come here and state that I recently ran into a good mount of people that for some reason has hate towards car wizards work. I have serious confusion on why arguably the most honest mechanic on youtube, actually has an audience that doesn't like him. Car wizard consistently trying to warn against the many mechanics that try to scam customers. Mr. And Mrs. Wizard runs one of the best, most honest shops in the entire nation.

Reliability is dependent on the owner. Presently have 2 cars, 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI and a 2018 Toyota Corolla LE. Had the Corolla since new but 4 owner on the Beetle. Used cars for me are OCD on the vehicle. Always keep a 5qt jug of oil and a gallon of coolant around. Plenty of coolant for the vehicles.

I've had an alternator actually overcharge and take out a battery as well. Its important to test because it ruined a second battery I put shortly after.
Always get an OEM alternator. Cheap aftermarket ones don't last. Also you could rebuild it or find someone who only does alternators and starters; they are usually older and wiser than the parts store guy.

When I started my career in 1974 I started buying the batteries that had the highest cold cranking amps and they were usually $35 or less. I did run some oddball setups like propane and I had a Triumph Spitfire with twin DCOE 40 Weber carburetors and they all had to spin over a bit to fire up during the winter here in the Texas panhandle.

Interesting timing on this video and the last video. I just had to have starters replaced and mine AND my daughter's car recently. Her car was fine, but mine had some funky issues. Mine had intermittent start issues; I replaced the battery. Still had intermittent start issues. Took it back to shop that put starter in. They said I didn't put the battery cables on correctly (not completely on posts) when I replaced battery. They put them on correctly and sent me on my way. A week later, intermittent start issues again. I could deal with it once in a while, since it would eventually start. When it finally left me stranded twice and forced me to walk home, that was it. Took it back to them, it finally happened to them while they had it. They called me up after they found a ground wire loose that they apparently knocked loose when they replaced the starter. They tightened it up and put a lock nut on it, apparently. It's been good ever since.

An additional option that _might_ be a solution: if your gas car ran fine in warmer weather, and suddenly is very hesitant to start after a cold night, it might be your engine oil is too thick. I had some 10w40 in the engine during the summer months, and recently the car had quite some trouble starting up during colder mornings. Changed the oil for 5w40, and the car starts fine now. This will most likely be an edge case, but maybe it help someone diagnose another possible cause of starting troubles...

Even the dealer has only Reman Denso alternator. It is pretty common with older cars, over 10-15 years. Keep the receipts when buying one even from the dealer. Take picture of it with your phone to save for warranty. Usually a reman Denso alternator has lifetime warranty.

I had a situation during the summer where the car ran fine, no warning lights, but there was a loud buzzing noise under the hood, that went up and down in pitch with engine rpm. I thought it was a bearing going bad somewhere. But using a hose I located the noise to the alternator. Removed it, and took it to the shop for repair. Turned out that a rectifier diode went bad, and all the load went to the remaining diode, causing the noise. Had it rebuilt, reinstalled it and it and no more noise.

My father-in-law and I changed out the in-tank fuel pump in my 1998 Chevy Lumina (3800 Series II V6). He's done them before and knew what he was doing with me helping. It took several hours but we got it done. No leaks, and I ran with that fuel pump until the day the engine quit and I sold the car to a scrapyard. That said I wouldn't want to try to tackle it myself - there are so many pitfalls and little things to keep track of. One false move or forget something and you're replacing not just the fuel pump, but also the tank and/or one of the lines running from the tank to the engine.

Mercedes is notorious for throwing up 100 faults if the battery voltage dips down. Charge the battery clear the codes drive the car and see if any come back. Also brake pedal switch causes ABS or ESP faults. Lastly, any dirt on the windshield sensor will give out faults with lane assist or cause headlights or wipers to activate. Edit: good reason not to fill up past the first click is to avoid problems with the EVAP system especially the purge valve.

I had a 2003 VW Jetta diesel. The overrun clutch on the alternator went bad, causing the battery light to flicker. Replacing that beast was a chore, to say the least. It was located between the A/C compressor and the power steering pump, very close to the radiator shroud. It took me hours.
I currently have a 2020 Subaru Outback. The fuel pump was replaced under a recall, so obviously I let the dealer do it. I even got a free loaner car while it was in the shop. This is one of those cars where the access is under the rear seat, and the cabin had a lingering odor of gasoline for a few days. Even the pros are going to spill a few drops of gas doing this procedure.

I have a 2013 VW Golf. One morning, last Spring, my wife went to start it and there was this rattling sound, but no crank. I immediately suspected that the battery was dead and the rattling sound was the solenoid trying to engage with insufficient voltage. While my wife arranged a ride to work, I called my friend to come with his booster pack. We got the car started and all the systems were working off alternator power, but the battery would not charge.
Before calling for a new battery, I had made sure that:
    1) The alternator and starter were good.
    2) No accessories had drained the battery.
    3) The battery would not charge.
    No parts cannon here.
As it turned out, the battery under the hood was the 10 year old original from the factory. A little bit of meter work showed that one of the cells in the battery had shorted out. Instead of 13.2 volts, it only held 11 volts. And this after 10 winters in Canada. Not bad.
So I bought a new battery off the CAA truck. including electrical system diagnostic, road-side replacement and a new battery, the service was $250 Can. I suppose I'm good for another 10 years.
No panic. Careful diagnostic. I didn't even have to take the car to the shop.

After three trys (with one game of solitaire on my phone between trys) it woukd fire right up.
I saw a video from my other favorite CZcams Mechanic discussing cleaning the Mass Air flow Sensor and Throttlebody.
I used CRC sprays, rags and toothbrushes.
Its been almostba year and has never not fired up since.

Great x 10 Video !! I watched this VERY carefully. When in University, I drove a 1983 Toyota Corolla which wouldn't start at random. It cost me many a batteries due to continuous cranking. It was crank, no start. Motor turns strong but it just didn't "take" - and then sometimes it would. If I removed the air filter and put a few drops of petrol in the carburetor - then voila it started! The booster and HT wires had spark. No fuel pump issues as when it ran it was fine. I would also like to know if disconnecting the battery has the same effect on the car's electronics and requires a reset as CHANGING the battery as I sometimes disconnect the battery on my 09 Honda, 2014 Lexus to save it. I've not done this on my 2016 Jaguar though as the battery is hard to access. Thanks Wizard !! You're the GOAT. Thankfully I've learnt that the fuel pumps on our Honda, Lexus and Mercedes is located under the back seat, so no having to drop fuel tanks.

If you have a full battery when your alternator goes out, you probably could drive a good 50 miles easily. I had a situation where my alternator went out and I got stranded about 75 miles from home. They "fixed it" there with a "rebuilt alternator" by the time I went home the battery light was on again. Turned out the part they used didn't work either. So I charged the battery overnight with my home charger and had them redo the job the next day driving the 75 miles with no alternator.

we had an alternator play reindeer games with us for a couple weeks. the car would randomly chime to tell you "look at the cluster!" and there'd be no warning light. after a couple weeks of thinking i'm going mad hearing things, it chimed and I caught the battery light come on briefly, then go off. I start poking around but everything says "no problem here, boss!" voltages all look good, while off or running, oscilloscope across the battery didn't show any evil rippling. Finally on a multi-day inlaw trip visit, the damn thing lit and stayed lit. I'd at that time had a lighter socket volt meter installed, and the wife happened to catch it go from 14.3 to 12.8 briefly, at the moment the chime and light happened. very quickly though it would go back to normal voltage, but I guess now it had lasted long enough the ECU was now commanding the BATT light to stay on. a vehicle restart would clear the BATT light. we finished the trip (with a couple more glitch incidences), and I swapped out the alternator when we got home. something internal must have been randomly open circuiting briefly, causing the alternator to shut down. luckily it never fully died on us.

In no way am I a mechanic but I've been fortunate to carefully go through forums where other people have similar issues with Saturns to find the problem. Battery and ignition coil module has been my two issues I've been able to fix without professional diagnosis. Anything under the car or inside the engine I'll leave it to the professionals though lol.

2001 Subaru Outback LL Bean with the H6 engine. I bought it used in Memphis as an airport car, and brought it to Fort Lauderdale where I live. For years I drove it without a battery hold down strap, thinking that the battery doesn't move around much anyway. Well, one day, I climb in, turn the key....And everything goes dead. And of course, this was first thing in the morning after flying all night and I was in NO mood for this crap. So I get out, pop the hood, and look at the battery. Just as a point of standard operating procedure, I wiggle the wires, then get back in the car. It starts right up!
Turns out the negative battery harness had been damaged by the battery moving around slightly. I bought the part online for $40 and installed it myself. I discovered that the coupling at the battery negative terminal was bad where the lead end connected to the copper wire so I suspect I could have fixed it, but I secured the battery properly and now the problem is solved.
    Great video!

Cars that use chips in the key can also have problems if a spare key, not properly coded, is tried. This can cause the car's immobilizer to brick the car. Sometimes you can recover the original key's functionality by inserting, removing and inserting again to reset the immobilizer.

I live in southern Arizona. I'm lucky to get two full years out of a battery in this heat. With a truly quality battery, battery tender and a bit of luck, I can get three years. I also get to use the warranty on every battery for every vehicle. They will not give you more than one replacement. LOL Any car dealer sucks for battery warranty. They require a four hour test to verify your battery is no good and then want to charge for diagnostics. Piss off! I buy all my batteries at places other than the dealer. LOL
When I replace the battery in my Ford I have to reset a module or it won't play nice. That's dumb also.
BTW, my Goldwing has a starter/alternator that is $4,000 for the part. I can't imagine how fun it would be to replace. I've only ever heard of one failing.

That's a great question and I can answer if you like. Driving with low fuel can damage the fuel pump because the fuel cools and lubricates the pump as it flows. The pump does use fuel as part of the cooling / lubrication process, but a quarter of a tank is way more than enough for this.
Hope that helps you out some.

If the engine cranks it has to be fuel or ignition. You can check the alternator by using a voltmeter, When the engine is
running you should get around 14v. I had an earth strap corrode on an Audi many years ago. I didn't realize until the
music on the cassette player slowed down and stopped, then the engine just stopped. I was lucky as I was way out into

One can extend the life of a fuel pump by not habitually running the vehicle low on fuel, endlessly having the low fuel warning light on.
The pump is immersed in fuel to cool & lubricate it. Low fuel level exposes the pump. Keep fuel level at 1/4 tank or higher.

Customer came back a day later car again no start. Turns out that the new battery the customer bought recently went bad as well!
