Vasilije Micic and Sasha Vezenkov were MVPs of the EuroLeague, but they have struggled so far in the NBA. Sasha Vezenkov isn’t getting many minutes with the Sacramento Kings, and he isn't playing as well as he did with Olympiakos. Sasha Vezenkov was a perfect fit for the Kings offense alongside Sabonis and DeAaron Fox so it makes no sense why he isn't playing more.
Vasilije Micic is playing even less, he was a 2 time MVP at Anadolu Efes and he finally decided to join the NBA at 30 years old. The OKC Thunder were one of the NBAs best teams, but Vasilije Micic wasn't getting any playing time. And he was just traded to the Charlotte Hornets in a deal centered around Gordon Hayward, who now plays for the OKC Thunder. With the Hornets, Vasilije Micic will probably get more playing time, as the backup point guard for LaMelo Ball. But the lack of respect and playing time that these two European stars have recieved, is exactly why so many EuroLeague stars don't come to the NBA.

  • @SerbLawyer92
    @SerbLawyer92 Před 3 měsíci +6

First problem is that Euroleague stars often land in teams which already have their best player (or franchise player NBA speaking) who is dominating the ball and score usage. Vezenkov had that bad luck to land in the team which has one of the best guards in NBA along with very good PF/C and yet there is no room for him. Add to this the fact that other players are fighting for their minutes and ball touches and scoring because their future contracts are depending because of their production. Few years ago, Nemanja Bjelica signed with Timberwolves which were very awful team back then and in that moment they had KAT, Wiggins and LaVine as their future stars and they were fighting for ball between them.
Second, coming to NBA as a experienced player (Micic came when he was 29, Bjelica 27, Teodosic 30, Vezenkov 28) is not good. If Euroleague star doesn't come in NBA by age 24,25, he is pretty much doomed. Bogdanovic came at age 24 I think and he is right now very good 6th man. Just look Doncic who was 19, Jokic 20 and they had room to grow and make mistakes while experienced players coming to NBA don't have that kind of privilege because it is expected from them to adjust to NBA quick.

Great analysis, I’ll be following this channel. It’s really hard to argue that either one of these players deserves more playing time, given the big leaps and greater success of the Kings and Thunder this year with younger lineups. (Forgive me for referring to them as Players 1 & 2, checking the right name is hard when commenting on my phone)
I also think it’s a bit of a stretch to compare Player 1’s equal/superior FIBA tournament performance with Jokic, Giannis, etc and kind of place him on their level. It’s a very small sample size to go off of and you then actually prove that this sample doesn’t really show Player 1 is in their category.
I also wish you would have discussed this question more: what would have happened if Player 1 or 2 would have come to the NBA as a Rookie? Especially Player 2 who was drafted and didn’t come. Luka is a rare breed, but maybe they could have had a similar path to D. Sabonis or Jokic, where they show early promise and evolve into a top NBA player over 4-5 years. I’m thinking about Coulibaly. Yes, he was drafted high and so there’s more incentive to come and play immediately since you’ll make a ton of money and the team is committed to playing you a lot of minutes early. But Bilal is earning minutes and turning heads as a rookie while getting the NBA “training” you need for your game to flower BEFORE you reach your athletic prime. Coming in at 30 yrs old like Player 2, I think it’s fair for teams to expect immediate results. You’re experienced, a champion, an MVP, so you don’t have the same runway to get your game going as a younger, less experienced player.
Anyway, I enjoyed this serious take on this topic and the depth of knowledge shown on both the NBA and Euroleague.

That's why all of the "unathletic" Euro leage players drop crazy points all the time. Luca. Giannis, and Jokic says the NBA is so much easier. I think the NBA is only slightly better than the Euroleage as of now. In the next decade or so the Euroleage will have the best talent once more players are incentivized to play in the Euroleage. Basketball is becoming more and more popular in Europe, and that just means more talent for them to grow. I do agree the NBA is better now, but not really by that much. Sooner or later (unless the NBA expands it's popularity into Europe) the Euroleage will become the best.

@@TheBuffaloFlats The only thing that needs to change is the way that the US develops talent. The system of going from high school to college to the pros cannot possibly compete with a system of having professional teams involved in the development of young talent from the time the players are 15/16 like you have in Europe. Once that changes the gap may open back up again.
Ultimately, Europe is benefiting right now from having the best development system, not the best talent. I don't think the Euroleague is particularly close to the NBA. I think any NBA player could play in that league but only about 10-12% of Euroleague players could make it in the NBA.

Teams that are have been contending like the Kings now don't want to give them too much time because they're gonna be focusing on the core that they think will help them win, not a guy who's accomplishments came under very different rules/playstyle. Teams that are tanking aren't gonna want to give too many minutes to a guy who's 30 because he doesn't fit into their timeline, and they could use those minutes to try to develop a diamond-in-the-rough that's a decade younger.

    The NBA has a hierarchy:
    1) Franchise player/players aka your stars
    2) Long stay borderline all-stars
    3) Promising rookies
    4) Free Agents
    5) G League talent
The thing is that Luka and Victor have age on their sides, but also space to grow where you draft needs for your team. The problem is that a 30 yr old "rookie" is more like a 30 yr old "free agent". This is talent brought in to fill out the bench squad (the 5 guys outside of the starters), but are promised a starting role if they "play good enough". They're not starting. They have to do something otherworldly to impress management, coaches, and influence a change of chemistry on the team, and that's if coaching and management doesn't change hands while they're there.
I don't know the best way for european talent to break through without being a draft prospect yet. The best case scenario is finding a team teetering on competing and in desperate need of a starter still. Maybe being traded to an awful team can also get them the playing time they need to get noticed or turn that team around.
The best "blueprint" right now is probably the Lauri example. Look at someone who was drafted really high, but was thought of as this shooting specialist on a deep team. It wasn't until he was traded to a team in need a star after losing their own that he exploded and became an all-star. Now, the Jazz aren't competing for a championship yet, but at least Lauri lengthened his career.
The only other blueprint I can think of is Jokic, but he was still young when he broke through. He did have to outplay a potential star is Nurkic to get to where he is now, but that journey took a new coach, a number of high level players around, so much so that some of them needed to be traded away, and 8 years of playing to get a championship. These guys don't have 8 years.
So, my best bet is finding a team, in need of scoring and a forward, on a team in need of star power that doesn't have that much money available to spend. Also finding a euro friendly system would also help. Teams like the Spurs, Nuggets, Mavericks with good systems or teams like the Kings (sorry Barnes) or Warriors (sorry Wiggins) in need of more forward talent. Then you have the best options with teams like the Cavs, Hawks, Wolves, and Rockets who are trying to win now, but need another piece to push them over other more favored teams.
A lot of it is just luck of fit and I hope Euroleague finds a better pipeline than free agency to demonstrate their talent to the league.

Vezenkov has 2 or 3 good games in a row and suddenly next five he is DNP. Imo there are inside things , politics and favoritism which play a big part in Vezenkov's minutes. He is not a starter level for high-level teams in NBA for now but for sure is a back-up . I dont think the fit is there too. Its surprising why SAC put so much effort to recruit and convince him to come over and then suddently he is out of the rotation in consequitive games. There is something behind the scenes happening. Defense is a big enough issue as of itself (by the way what happened to the NBA has no defence argument? How come Euroleague players regularly go to NBA and get exposed defensively?) But the biggest issue is that Sasha doesn't seem to be strong or fast enough to get into his spots consistently. When your whole game relies on Catch and shoot it can be the difference between being a Star,a role player or a bench warmer.
I agree the Playoffs will make or break his NBA career at this point. The pacing slows down significantly and he'll either struggle and thus get cut from the rotation entirely or he will benefit from the slower pacing and have his chance to make an impact

The third best option for him is the Nuggets as a backup for AG. He would fit perfectly in their system and am sure will have an amazing understanding with Jokic.

Sasha needs to get more minutes, Keegan hasn’t been hitting 3s like last year we really need someone to spark something I think after the all star break he’s gonna get more minutes.

I remember Sasha from when he played for the team I support (Aris Thessaloniki), when he was 20 years old. The guy is a really hard worker.
American players have a hard time in Europe during their first season, until they get acclimated, and my guess is that the same goes for European players moving to the NBA. Sasha needs time.

I believe it's all about marketability. Creating a brand out of the player is what the league and teams care for. And you cannot create a brand out of 30 years old foreigner who does not seemlessly fit into the culture. That's why Luka was given the chance. Luka is young, brash, charismatic and a tad bit arrogant. He is no less American star than most American stars. Micic and Vezenkov are not cut out for that. That's why Jokic was so clearly rejected for numerous years until he and his team made his case undeniable.
All of the players we watch in the Euroleague and the NBA are unbelievable athletes and minds and the gap between the best and the middle of the road is not that far at all. Under the right circumstances most if not all of them could shine. And under the wrong circumstances all of them could look mediocre. Imagine if Wesbrook went into Europe and got assigned a 3&D role because that's what his team needed and because he's shown good prospects on defence. He might've adapted at some point but it would have taken years. Would have he had the patience? I don't know? Would have he gotten to his full potential? Like hell he would.
But after all, it's not necessarily the job of a NBA team to win games, its job is to win money. And marketable superstars is what brings in the money.

Lifelong Kings fan living in Sacramento. Great Video! Worth a mention that Fox and Lyles played in the same college system.
I think my only critique would be that a statistical analysis doesn’t tell the full Trey Lyles story. Dude is a stud. Always in the right place, and is an underrated enforcer. He is legit unafraid. I feel more comfortable when he is on the court than Sasha. But I will admit… when Sasha is on the court he can be pretty fun to watch.

Micic game ONE with Charlotte dropped 18 points on 8/13 shooting. Given how injury prone the Ball brothers seem to be, I think he will have plenty of opportunities if he stays in Charlotte
Vezenkov needs to go somewhere where he is really needed. The Kings don't need him, they have people who fill that role. But put him somewhere that needs that floor spacing, somewhere like the Lakers or even my Spurs, and give him some 20 minute games to prove himself over 5-10 games, and I think he proves himself.

Sasha should get more minutes 15+ per, he has high ball iQ and great hands. He’s always in the right spot for a rebound, blk and steal/deflections. Mike Brown gotta him more minutes! He always pulls too with no hesitation.

Should have gone to the Wolves, solid defensive team that needs more spacing and ball movement. However, no one predicted them to be this good.

At this point is more about playing style. If you can't play 1vs1 offense and create your own points you are done in the NBA. That is why Euroleage point guards like Micic have no business there, he is a great playmaker but in the NBA plays are mostly 1vs1 or pick and roll... Also players like Vezenkov, heavily dependant on teamwork end up relegated to shooters ( if they can shoot)😅

Sasha needs more minutes, for real. His off the ball movement is very good, but he shouldn't play starter, Keegan and Barnes are just better. The Micic situation is Micic not being good enough/having to adjust to a different playstyle. He can't have the ball in his hands like that when Shai and Giddey are his teammates. But I don't think he NEEDS the ball in his ends, he has a good enough skillset to be a good off-ball player in the league.

@@clan_o be a good role player, I guess. Sasha is talented but was only MVP because he was in the ideal situation. Was he in any other team in the Euroleague he wouldn't be an MVP. Of course, he would still be a starter on any team in the Euroleague.

The fact that Mike James is one of the best guards in the Euroleague says volumes about the difference. Guys like Shane Larkin and Facundo Campazzo are some of the top players... guys who stunk it up in the NBA. The difference in athleticism between the NBA and Euroleague is why he's considered a specialist. He can get exploited too easily on D.
