In the past a player like Zach Edey, the x2 naismith player of the year in college would be the #1 pick in the NBA draft. But in today's NBA, tall centers like Zach Edey who dominate the NCAA have become underrated, and in this video I breakdown why people are sleeping on Zach Edey's potential at the NBA level and scouts are wrong about the former Purdue Boilermaker star.

This man is so undervalued. I hope he gets drafted to a team that allows him to develop. I think Zach Edey might be one of the sleepers in this draft class.
Though the NBA is looking away to draft slow and big centers in exchange to the likes of versatile like Wemby and Holmgren, I don't think we can write Edey off right away.
The man is continuing to improve. He performed well in the draft combine and he has a potential to be a play-making big (though not closer to a Nikola Jokic).
I really do hope Zach would get his opportunity and gets to showcase his overall repertoire and what he can bring to a team.

Edey is definitely worth taking a chance on. He has a ton of intangibles and his steady improvement is EXACTLY what every NBA team wants to see in their picks.
With that said, Edey’s success is a long shot. Today’s NBA is a 3 pt shooting league. Many of today’s best bigs can shoot the three. Those that can’t are a huge liability for their teams, because it congests the driving lanes, making it much harder on the offensive end.
Today’s bigs fall into one of three categories- athletic freaks, unicorns and specialists. Your freaks are Wemby, Giannis and Chet. Guys who possess the size, speed, athleticism, shooting abilities to make a huge impact on both ends of the court. Those three are capable of d-ing up guards coming off of a pick.
Your unicorns are Embiid, Jokic. Embiid is a physical specimen and offensive juggernaut. Too big, too strong, too skilled etc on both ends to have an equal. Jokic is the unicorn of unicorns. He’s the greatest passing big ever, who possesses an offensive bag of skills so deep, that he could easily drop 40 a night if he chose too. He prefers getting his teammates involved, which ironically, makes him even more of a unicorn.
What people fail to remember though, is Jokic was a HUGE liability on the defensive end up until last year. Jokic doesn’t have the speed and athleticism to defend the pick and roll heavy offensive schemes so prevalent in today’s NBA. For the Nuggets to win their championship, they had to implement a special Jokic defensive scheme. A scheme that required the Nuggets to put a roster of players around him, with the skills/agility/intelligence to switch and rotate defenders constantly, on the defensive end. If Jokic wasn’t such an offensive juggernaut, this would have never been considered.
Your specialists are Gobert and Davis. Gobert is only in the league for his defensive prowess. Davis’s greatest strength is on the offensive end. When healthy, he’s one of the most offensively gifted centers to have ever played the game. He’s not bad on defense but in my opinion, Davis lacks the heart and competitiveness of a Giannis/Gobert to reach his potential on the defensive end of the floor.
Edey’s biggest problem is he’s none of those. I don’t think he’s quick enough to guard the better centers, let alone the 1-4 positions. I don’t think he shoots well enough to stretch the floor. He lacks the athleticism to fulfill the role of rim protector. So unless he develops his skills, I don’t see him fitting in today’s NBA.
He definitely deserves an opportunity though. If he truly has a good work ethic and is devoted to his craft, I think he could definitely end up being at least a solid backup for many NBA teams and I’m rooting for him.

Game is moving away fast from traditional centers. The reason Chet and Wemby are so good is because of how tall they are AND how insanely skilled and athletic they are. Edey is tall, heavy and slow. That doesn’t translate to the modern game at all. He would’ve been top 3 in 2004 but I doubt he’s top 20 in 2024

Edey is not the equivalent he’s bigger and slower but if asked to play a specific role and not be the guy he may be able to do something. He’s not going be able to camp out in the paint like that in the NBA and remember Lively isn’t asked to do what Jokic or Wemby does in Dallas in 4 years a Duke I believe he only scored in double figures a couple of times so despite what people believe sometimes you’ll thrive if you buy into a lesser role.

The only players to win multiple unanimous NPOYs are Bill Walton, Ralph Sampson, and Zach Edey. Big men who came to basketball in their teens and became college stars after playing another sport in their youth include Tim Duncan, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Zach Edey. His game is dated, he would need to be the focal point of an offense to be effective and in this generation of analytical basketball that would be a death sentence. On defense, he would be hunted by guards on switches every possession he is in the game. I know this draft is weak but I think ZE's ceiling would be 2nd/3rd string center.

About Zach Edey's shooting, overall traditionally the guards and small forward had to have a jump shot while the power forward had to face up and pass and the center camp in the paint. Now it's the guards and forwards who have to shoot and the centers who have to face up and pass. However for the bigmen who can shoot from 3 well, like Wemby and Chet, they are probably better assets on teams then small forwards who have a similar skillset due to their height.

Good thing Klingman has a couple teammates with obvious NBA capabilities, as Edey, that the majority visionless NBA scouts more correctly felt in their souls and saw through the sounds, on that grande stage Klingman exited right, early, often, and appropriately as the truth was told, while the sounds and feels were distorted or misheard.

For the record, Zach edey is a million miles from Bill Walton, R.I.P. Walton was an freak in athleticism...once he grew ca. mid-high school to 6'11" he was unbeatable. The closest comparison is to Wilt Chamberlain. Unlike Wilt, though, he had the worst joint problems of anyone who ever made it to the NBA by *far*.. His knees were both unstable and very painful by junior year of High school, requiring reconstructive surgery. He endured constant playing minute restrictions the rest of his playing days. It's hard to believe when you look through his long list of amazing accomplishments, including leading teams to championships at every level. Just the fact he kept playing as a teenager despite how much pain it incurred is nuts, let alone that he was the best player on the floor bar none.

In a word: Defense. While he's very good offensively, he's average at best defensively. He might be an adequate defender around the basket if he plays physical smart team defense but he is helpless on the perimeter trying to contain the dribble or stop the 3. Of course, most players his size are not good perimeter defenders but some are quicker than others and can at least put some pressure on 3 pt. shooters and cut off a drive once in a while. Garza is a sieve out there and the modern NBA game is not just about hitting the 3 but stopping the 3, or at least reducing the other teams 3 pt. percentage. The NBA wants big men versatile enough to have some defensive impact when teams run plays trying to get slower footed big men ISO'd with quicker perimeter players. That's why big men who put up big numbers in college on offense, but have average foot speed, are no longer getting selected with the top picks.

If you have 2 players who offense is under the rim. the Defense can collapse more effectively. None of these 3 big men have a 3 pointer to be threat to open up the court.

Its hard to compare him to nba players but i would say he is a lot like clint capela or Daniel Gafford, Robert williams III or shaquille oneal. The playstyles matchup with these players and they made it alright in the league without that much of a jumper

He has improved a lot from last year and showed he can at least contribute at the next level. I don’t think he will ever be anything more than a quality off the bench center or a decent starter. Maybe he can continue to really improve his outside shooting but as of right now he seems to have an okay ceiling and high floor.

It is partly because teams look one dimensionally nowadays, instead of filling the bench with someone who can drag down 6-7 rrb in 15 minutes off the bench. They will take yet another 3&D wing with mediocre defense and 25% 3P shooting. Is what it is.

College offensive systems are built around their best talent. There is something beautiful about the offensive systems, coaching, and strategy. That is why a lot of purist love college basketball more than NBA basketball. NBA teams have been fooled too many times by this and have drafted overrated players based on their college success for decades. I think they are afraid, because of this. That being said I think Eudy has a bright future, maybe just not a lottery pick.

he isnt fit for current nba, college basketball and nba basketball are very different, but I feel edey focused too much on being good at college basketball. There is also the fact that there isn't an nba team where he would fit well, he doesn't fit well in the current era of basketball. We are in a perimeter centric league, and edey is a paint centric player. Also, we are in one of, if not, the weakest college basketball eras, this is most likely because of the huge college-nba basketball difference I said before, college players aren't tuning their game for college basketball, they're tuning it for nba basketball. Another reason is that, many players that are projected for the draft aren't in ncaa. sarr, risacher, buzelis, salaun, topic, holland, klintman, t smith, dadiet, flowers, djurisic, chomche. sarr for example, is better than edey in most ways, and is very close to edey in the things he's worse at. most importantly, sarr can defend in the paint, and on the perimeter. edey lacks severly in perimeter defense. kel'el ware is edey but with a perimeter game. There is nothing that you would want that would make you pick edey over ware, ware is just better.

Great video and helps put things into perspective. He’s a beast who has improved dramatically each year, showing his killer drive and motivation as well as tremendous potential. And if you are good enough, you end up molding the style of play and rules around you, rather than being a victim of the style and rules. NBA scouts and haters are truly delirious.

First of all, Edey's agent should be sponsoring this video. He's way more skilled than previous giants like Tacko Falls, Hasheem Thabeet, Roy Hibbert. He's a new-age Yao Ming, and he's only played six years. I hope he doesn't go lottery. I hope he goes to a team that has a need but also can be patient and let him develop. Maybe Toronto and learn playing behind his countryman Kelly Olynyk.
