In the past a player like Zach Edey, the x2 naismith player of the year in college would be the #1 pick in the NBA draft. But in today's NBA, tall centers like Zach Edey who dominate the NCAA have become underrated, and in this video I breakdown why people are sleeping on Zach Edey's potential at the NBA level and scouts are wrong about the former Purdue Boilermaker star.

76rs better draft him
what happened to kaodirichi akobundo ehiogu? 48 inch vert at 6 foot 10. went undrafted 2023 for some stupid reason, then went to play in Germany for the tubingen tigers, they didn't ever pass him the ball when they should have, and now he has disappeared from everything???
If he gets a yao ming post fade hes gonna go crazy
Get a good 3 point shooter guard with him so he can set screens and then get the mismatch to post up on them
Lowkey him to Houston would be a great location for him
He already has that.
Crazy thing is, Wemby is the same height and he can contest that post fade. But he's about the only one who can
@stevenscummy1458 wemby is 1.5" taller than edey
Scouts say he's only good at basketball because he's tall, yet scouts have no problem saying someone will be good at basketball because they can jump high and have long arms. Make it make sense
Forreals
He can't stretch the floor. If he could shoot the 3 consistently he could be a generational talent.
He's slow
@@christurner5682 horrible take. Jokic, KD and Luka are not the fastest players but yet they are still superstars in the league. It's whether if his skills can translate to the NBA. His post game and footwork is very good, the question is can he develop a 3point shot and can he make them consistently!!
If you can jump, that translates to the NBA. Just being tall doesn't translate
Great college players don’t work all the time because the team doesn’t put them in a system they will flourish in.
because that system doesn't lead to wins
Luka Garza
If you need a whole system build around you to be great you shouldn’t be a lottery pick. Most nba teams already have a star and are looking to add complimentary pieces. Zach Edey is a big risk to pick for your franchise guy
@@majestyirving1372Edeys game translates a lot better
While true, it’s also true that players need to adjust to the system that the coach wants them to play. Unless you’re a generational top 3 pick, no NBA coach is change how they play for a rookie. The rookie needs to adapt
RIP Bill Walton
Wom… wait this is actually sad 😭😭😭
True RIP Bill Walton 🙏❤️🕊️🕊️
Rest in piss
Big bill not dead
Hopefully the Blazers' championship curse is over now that he's passed.
Portland did Bill dirty, and deserved not to win another chip while he was alive.
to me it seems his biggest upside is his coachability. started basketball late in high school with low expectations going into college, yet he went on to become a b2b player of the year. he also was expected to be a poor shooter at the draft workouts, and yet he finished higher than most players let alone big men. i see no reason why he can't make it in the league.
Do they even coach in the NBA? It seems players just get trainers for their skillset and ignore the things they do well.
Who’s the best X’s & O’s coach right now?
Crazy cause he had one of the best agility test in the draft combine, 7”4 and has good touch around the basket and blocks shots, organization actually takes time to work with he can be a good player
I will admit difference is his instincts ain’t there like most players cause he hasn’t played as much basketball, he needs to play a lot of basketball too
He'll get called for defensive 3 seconds in the NBA because he camps in the paint. There's no defensive 3 seconds in college so he could stand in one spot and block shots
It's his late coming to the game. I don't think he has play street ball and there are things like creativity he is has not developed like other players. you are correct about working with him and see enough progress 4 or 5 year down the road. They want someone they are expecting to be effective in the next 2 year for a number 1 pick. I can see he is a project and being effective in time.
@@faervas1234 joel embiid started late too

It would be so funny if he came in and started dominating lol
If only there was a team that is doing back to the basket post up plays now a days? That is the biggest problem. He will need a 3 point shot or he will be like Rudy Geberth who got killed when you know how to exploit his weakness. May me he can join the WNBA where I see that type of play.

@@faervas1234 All he has to do is be a PnR rimrunner. That 6'8" wing coming over to tag him when the big hedges isn't gonna be able to stop him. Trying to box him out will be hell for undersized bigs. He's also great at getting deep post position and sealing off defenders, so there will absolutely be chances to get him the ball for easy points off of standard NBA offensive actions. Also the mismatches would be hilarious if teams try switching against him. He won't be getting a lot of raw post-ups against traditional centers, but there are a lot of other actions used in the modern NBA that he can and does score on easily.
Saying he’s “too tall” makes no sense when Wemby is the same height. He’s too slow, unathletic & can’t shoot. Height isn’t his issue lol
The problem is nba teams and nba scouts are obsess with drafting generational talents like wembanyama, chet. He can be a solid center in the nba with his skillsets.
He outperformed nearly everyone at the NBA combine. Look past the books cover there are lots of pages you obviously haven't read.
@@SophiaGailecruz-pr8oo he can be a solid center in 2002 nba with his skillset lmfao. the game has a long evolved from big men who play with their back to the rim and no jump shot. @@VojvodaSloboda he has no jump shot? 🤣🤣🤣Did you watch the video🤷♂️🤦♂️🤣
This man is so undervalued. I hope he gets drafted to a team that allows him to develop. I think Zach Edey might be one of the sleepers in this draft class.
Though the NBA is looking away to draft slow and big centers in exchange to the likes of versatile like Wemby and Holmgren, I don't think we can write Edey off right away.
The man is continuing to improve. He performed well in the draft combine and he has a potential to be a play-making big (though not closer to a Nikola Jokic).
I really do hope Zach would get his opportunity and gets to showcase his overall repertoire and what he can bring to a team.
7'4", 300 lbs is crazy work. Clippers.....PLEASE
Edey is definitely worth taking a chance on. He has a ton of intangibles and his steady improvement is EXACTLY what every NBA team wants to see in their picks.
With that said, Edey’s success is a long shot. Today’s NBA is a 3 pt shooting league. Many of today’s best bigs can shoot the three. Those that can’t are a huge liability for their teams, because it congests the driving lanes, making it much harder on the offensive end.
Today’s bigs fall into one of three categories- athletic freaks, unicorns and specialists. Your freaks are Wemby, Giannis and Chet. Guys who possess the size, speed, athleticism, shooting abilities to make a huge impact on both ends of the court. Those three are capable of d-ing up guards coming off of a pick.
Your unicorns are Embiid, Jokic. Embiid is a physical specimen and offensive juggernaut. Too big, too strong, too skilled etc on both ends to have an equal. Jokic is the unicorn of unicorns. He’s the greatest passing big ever, who possesses an offensive bag of skills so deep, that he could easily drop 40 a night if he chose too. He prefers getting his teammates involved, which ironically, makes him even more of a unicorn.
What people fail to remember though, is Jokic was a HUGE liability on the defensive end up until last year. Jokic doesn’t have the speed and athleticism to defend the pick and roll heavy offensive schemes so prevalent in today’s NBA. For the Nuggets to win their championship, they had to implement a special Jokic defensive scheme. A scheme that required the Nuggets to put a roster of players around him, with the skills/agility/intelligence to switch and rotate defenders constantly, on the defensive end. If Jokic wasn’t such an offensive juggernaut, this would have never been considered.
Your specialists are Gobert and Davis. Gobert is only in the league for his defensive prowess. Davis’s greatest strength is on the offensive end. When healthy, he’s one of the most offensively gifted centers to have ever played the game. He’s not bad on defense but in my opinion, Davis lacks the heart and competitiveness of a Giannis/Gobert to reach his potential on the defensive end of the floor.
Edey’s biggest problem is he’s none of those. I don’t think he’s quick enough to guard the better centers, let alone the 1-4 positions. I don’t think he shoots well enough to stretch the floor. He lacks the athleticism to fulfill the role of rim protector. So unless he develops his skills, I don’t see him fitting in today’s NBA.
He definitely deserves an opportunity though. If he truly has a good work ethic and is devoted to his craft, I think he could definitely end up being at least a solid backup for many NBA teams and I’m rooting for him.
Game is moving away fast from traditional centers. The reason Chet and Wemby are so good is because of how tall they are AND how insanely skilled and athletic they are. Edey is tall, heavy and slow. That doesn’t translate to the modern game at all. He would’ve been top 3 in 2004 but I doubt he’s top 20 in 2024
(Not even trying to hate on the dude just answer the question from the video as to why no one seems to care about him joining the league. Hes gonna be a role player or backup center)
Embid and Jokic are too. They won MVP.
Dallas got that traditional center catching lobs and dunking all over the place.
I mean Chet would struggle against him on size alone.

@@Zemlja_je_ravnaDerrick Lively is more in the mold of his coach Tyson Chandler in Dallas what he’s asked to do is to his strengths be an athletic rim running big, that plays defense rebounds, and gets his off of put backs, tip ins and lobs. Edey is not the equivalent he’s bigger and slower but if asked to play a specific role and not be the guy he may be able to do something. He’s not going be able to camp out in the paint like that in the NBA and remember Lively isn’t asked to do what Jokic or Wemby does in Dallas in 4 years a Duke I believe he only scored in double figures a couple of times so despite what people believe sometimes you’ll thrive if you buy into a lesser role.
I am sorry, but Boban has the exact same skillset! He did the same thing Edey did the last 2 years... but not against college Kids, he did it in the Europe against grown ass man. Look up his stats before coming to the NBA...

I always hated when people say mid range jumpers are bad shots. Well the best scorers in history all feasted in the mid range their entire career. What a dumb take
The only college players to be 7'1" and score over 750 points in a college season are Wilt, Kareem, David Robinson, Shaq, and Zach Edey. The only players to win multiple unanimous NPOYs are Bill Walton, Ralph Sampson, and Zach Edey. Big men who came to basketball in their teens and became college stars after playing another sport in their youth include Tim Duncan, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Zach Edey. There are no serious Edey comps who've come into the league in the past 20 years. Boban only had one year in Europe in which he played more than 20 mpg, so he's never really had the stamina to play big minutes. We might not know exactly if a player like Edey will work in today's NBA, but we also don't know if it won't work either, and the scenarios in which it does work are pretty appealing.
And guess what each of those players you mentioned all had in common they were elite on Defense and were generational talents none of which Eddey is

Edey can't shoot. Edey's too slow. Ok... Clingan though?
In a year with no clear number 1 pick, edey seems like a fairly solid choice at #1. It's insane he's not even in the conversation.
ppl forget how fast the nba is. his only hope is to have a 3pter, so he can get back on defence to anchor. his speed, and being in the post, makes him a huge liability for fast break exploits. if height was everything, you would still have 2 left foot 7 footers out there, hacking, and shooting post hooks all day

It's because he can't stretch the floor. He's a tremendous post player and has good footwork, but it's really hard to be successful especially in the NBA if you cannot shoot the ball.
Did you watch the video he can hit a shot and their are very few good big men who hit their three efficiently

If you look up one dimensional basketball players in the dictionary, Zach Edey would be the example. His game is dated, he would need to be the focal point of an offense to be effective and in this generation of analytical basketball that would be a death sentence. On defense, he would be hunted by guards on switches every possession he is in the game. I know this draft is weak but I think ZE's ceiling would be 2nd/3rd string center.

About Zach Edey's shooting, overall traditionally the guards and small forward had to have a jump shot while the power forward had to face up and pass and the center camp in the paint. Now it's the guards and forwards who have to shoot and the centers who have to face up and pass. However for the bigmen who can shoot from 3 well, like Wemby and Chet, they are probably better assets on teams then small forwards who have a similar skillset due to their height.
College players forty years ago weren’t competing with foreign and one and done players. The landscape is way different now
Edey has no intangibles that translate to a modern nba setting besides his rebounding ability , he’s slow footed and doesn’t stretch the floor outside of 3 feet . You comparing him to Wemby and Chet is disingenuous considering both those guys are extremely tall but also are agile enough to hedge on to smaller players and also shoot the 3 at a high clip
Its just the american sports media who downplays this guys achievements and potentials ...next year when he plays in the nba, these exact peopple who call themselves "analysts" will be the same guy who wont stop praiasing edey for being so good

@@Griffexit's not because of his nationality lmao. People like Nikola and Luka have proven you can be the face of the league despite being a different ethnicity. To put UCONN’s Klingman above him appears most nba prospect scouts suffer from blindness when reviewing the evidence of their heads up battle, where Klingman watched mostly from the bench because of his foul, size, and skillset problems against the 37 point and 10 rebound Edey on the biggest stage of the year. Good thing Klingman has a couple teammates with obvious NBA capabilities, as Edey, that the majority visionless NBA scouts more correctly felt in their souls and saw through the sounds, on that grande stage Klingman exited right, early, often, and appropriately as the truth was told, while the sounds and feels were distorted or misheard.
Yeah, man. I seriously feel like there is some kind of mass psychosis epidemic in terms of how people are viewing Clingan over Edey. I'd take Edey over him any day of the week.
NBA scouts are dumb. They dont watch NCAA games.
Edey has flaws but if he plays for a team with elite defense, he will be an tough to hold.
Who has the personal to stop Edey today?
He would draw lots of fouls too.
Thats why I think that the Spurs should pick Edey at 4.
He and Wemby would be very interesting to watch.
Wemby is a 4 on offense and can roam on defense to clear Edey's inefficiencies.
How many teams would be able to box out both Wemby and Edey?
Somebody better grab Edey he really slept on
For the record, Zach edey is a million miles from Bill Walton, R.I.P. Walton was an freak in athleticism...once he grew ca. mid-high school to 6'11" he was unbeatable. The closest comparison is to Wilt Chamberlain. Unlike Wilt, though, he had the worst joint problems of anyone who ever made it to the NBA by *far*.. His knees were both unstable and very painful by junior year of High school, requiring reconstructive surgery. He endured constant playing minute restrictions the rest of his playing days. It's hard to believe when you look through his long list of amazing accomplishments, including leading teams to championships at every level. Just the fact he kept playing as a teenager despite how much pain it incurred is nuts, let alone that he was the best player on the floor bar none.
BILL WALTON WAS A SUPER STAR JUST INJURY PRONE BAD FEET...
I'm looking forward to seeing his match ups with the wemby and chet
If Zach Edey becomes key player on a winning team, a lot of NBA scouts need to lose their jobs or be questioned on their methods. We've seen 4 years of this guy and he's gotten better every year. I think PHX needs someone like this. He doesn't have to be the number 1 2 or 3 option and will rebound well for them, and with all the attention on the big 3 he could take time to develop even more.
They didnt win back to back Big Ten Tournament titles. Wisconsin bounced his ass in the semi

In the early days bigs were considered the first scoring option. In today’s League, bigs are now the second scoring option as most teams run a space and pace style of play. He’ll make the NBA but not as the 1st pick and he will definitely need to prove himself as the first scoring option for whichever team drafts him.
The league has changed and big men have to be more skilled than in the past. It is vital to be able to be quick and able to shoot or you will be a liability on offense and defence. He is gonna be somewhere between luke kornett and boban.
Centers are underrated
No they're not 💀 Alex Sarr is the consensus #1 pick in this draft, Victor Wembanyama went #1 overall last year. Donovan Clingan is the #3 consensus ranked prospect after Sarr and Risacher this year also a centre. Zach Edey is just not that guy 😂 don't listen to the media do your own research videos like this are just for views
The problem is there are like less then 62 centers in the NBA getting one of those spots you have to be worth it to knock off someone with experiences and stats.
That’s because most NBA centers now are really Power Forwards and some even Small Forwards. Real Centers get lost in the shuffle

Hops Nola gets him to replace Jonas
Agree
given that Jonas is already a really good low post scorer, Edey could do everything that Jonas could do and maybe even better with that added size, especially if he ever gets the green light to shoot 3s in the NBA, so you're not wrong here.
But the spacing with Zion might still be an issue
He’s not just tall. He’s extremely strong and has crazy energy for a man that large. Some contender is going to get him mid to late first and be very pleased when he comes in for 25 a night and is a physical menace wearing everyone down with his relentless style of play.
He also has great touch and can shoot from the line.
Collier and Edey are going to hook a couple teams up this year.
i honestly think he would be great at okc, they need a real big man that can rebound and block shots. it’s not hard to develop a three point shot or midrange shot, we’ve already seen he can shoot free throws so he’s not a complete liability on offense. him and chet would be a big threat if he can develop his midrange game because that opens up so much for the offense

Of course, most players his size are not good perimeter defenders but some are quicker than others and can at least put some pressure on 3 pt. shooters and cut off a drive once in a while. Garza is a sieve out there and the modern NBA game is not just about hitting the 3 but stopping the 3, or at least reducing the other teams 3 pt. percentage. The NBA wants big men versatile enough to have some defensive impact when teams run plays trying to get slower footed big men ISO'd with quicker perimeter players. That's why big men who put up big numbers in college on offense, but have average foot speed, are no longer getting selected with the top picks.
Bucks, you know what to do 🫡
Heat needs this kid and this kid needs Heat culture. Play this kid Center so Bam can actually play his perfect fit position which is the 4.
This is actually not an awful idea
If there's a place that can build a great player out of Zach it's Miami
Say what you want but DKM does he's research... I wish he gave out lottery ticket picks.
He’s Canadian, they never get love
Andrew Wiggins, Jamal Murray, SGA
lou dort, shai gilgeous-alexander, dillion brooks, jamal murray, andrew nemhard the list goes on and on
SGA almost won MVP.....
@@sfdko3291 Because Jokic was on the other side.
Shaedon sharpe
Can you imagine Edey with Gafford, Lively playing with Luka and Kyrie? Please Edey ...fall ... and go to Dallas.
I am trying to think how that will work. You need the three 3 point players to stretch the defense. that why Gafford and Lively don't play at the same time. If you have 2 players who offense is under the rim. the Defense can collapse more effectively. None of these 3 big men have a 3 pointer to be threat to open up the court.
Lively was shooting 3s in high school. Now all he can do is set screens and dunk
@@tainankinghe’s REALLY REALLY good at setting screens and dunking though
@@tainanking he's elite at both of those things and he's amazing at passing out of the pnr, in fact he's one of the best bigs at passing out of the short roll in the league, so its not just screens and dunks
The perimeter defense might be suboptimal.
DKM basketball knowledge underrated.
Nah took him under one minute to get something wrong 😭
Eddy inside the paint is yours. You can't let someone come in to your space and make you change your shot. You got to play physical, above the rim , and bully rebounds . Thats what they are looking for.
In the Euroleague he will be a monster
"Anyone shorter than that isn't tall enough"
Truer words have never been said before. 😂😂😂😂😂
Its hard to compare him to nba players but i would say he is a lot like clint capela or Daniel Gafford, Robert williams III or shaquille oneal. The playstyles matchup with these players and they made it alright in the league without that much of a jumper
He has improved a lot from last year and showed he can at least contribute at the next level. I don’t think he will ever be anything more than a quality off the bench center or a decent starter. Maybe he can continue to really improve his outside shooting but as of right now he seems to have an okay ceiling and high floor.
It's interesting that this is only the ninth year of his life that he's playing basketball. He WILL improve, and likely a lot
It hurts that he got really poor coaching at Purdue 😮.
You can only coach a player with less then 2 year of playing to being where he needs to be. You can only learn so fast and apply it. He is doing well but he is missing so much compare to others.
It is partly because teams look one dimensionally nowadays, instead of filling the bench with someone who can drag down 6-7 rrb in 15 minutes off the bench. They will take yet another 3&D wing with mediocre defense and 25% 3P shooting. Is what it is.
and a 7’6 slow footed center with no post moves or anything valuable to TODAY’s game is better ?
Honestly at a point I was just waiting for his fg% , 74% is good for his size. The thing about The Bucks you left out was Lopez having the best help defender in the game at the time and maybe still is named Giannis. This guy could be good , I wouldn't mind if my team grabbed him.
College offensive systems are built around their best talent. There is something beautiful about the offensive systems, coaching, and strategy. That is why a lot of purist love college basketball more than NBA basketball. NBA teams have been fooled too many times by this and have drafted overrated players based on their college success for decades. I think they are afraid, because of this. That being said I think Eudy has a bright future, maybe just not a lottery pick.
Are the NBA scouts braindead bro didn't they say Luka was a Ben Simmons caliber player but lack some qualities of Ben Simmons they are a few NBA scouts that I respect.
The Jeremy Lin of 7 footers.... No matter how he dominates, he ain't gonna be taken seriously.#imho
Rip jerry west 🙏
Great video and breakdown. I think teams will regret not taking him if he doesn’t go in the lottery 10
he isnt fit for current nba, college basketball and nba basketball are very different, but I feel edey focused too much on being good at college basketball. There is also the fact that there isn't an nba team where he would fit well, he doesn't fit well in the current era of basketball. We are in a perimeter centric league, and edey is a paint centric player. Also, we are in one of, if not, the weakest college basketball eras, this is most likely because of the huge college-nba basketball difference I said before, college players aren't tuning their game for college basketball, they're tuning it for nba basketball. Another reason is that, many players that are projected for the draft aren't in ncaa. sarr, risacher, buzelis, salaun, topic, holland, klintman, t smith, dadiet, flowers, djurisic, chomche. sarr for example, is better than edey in most ways, and is very close to edey in the things he's worse at. most importantly, sarr can defend in the paint, and on the perimeter. edey lacks severly in perimeter defense. kel'el ware is edey but with a perimeter game. There is nothing that you would want that would make you pick edey over ware, ware is just better.
Great video and helps put things into perspective. He’s a beast who has improved dramatically each year, showing his killer drive and motivation as well as tremendous potential. And if you are good enough, you end up molding the style of play and rules around you, rather than being a victim of the style and rules. NBA scouts and haters are truly delirious.
First of all, Edey's agent should be sponsoring this video. He's way more skilled than previous giants like Tacko Falls, Hasheem Thabeet, Roy Hibbert. He's a new-age Yao Ming, and he's only played six years. I hope he doesn't go lottery. I hope he goes to a team that has a need but also can be patient and let him develop. Maybe Toronto and learn playing behind his countryman Kelly Olynyk.
Anybody else hate takes like this that are obvious engagement bait?
Yep
I am a BIG believer on Edey. He may not become an mvp but I think he will have multiple all stars, all-nba and if he gets lucky he’s becoming a champion
The reason those two that won the award in college that are not doing good in the NBA is because they like to play small now, which is stupid because if you notice the teams that are winning are the tall teams.
Well DKM if the NBA undervalue Edey out the league the plus side will be that Euroleague career will do all time numbers.
Can’t wait to watch him dominating the euro league soon enough
It’s interesting to see how he will do in the modern nba.
