Let's talk about sweet itch (It's time for our annual sweet itch chat)

- The time has come for our annual sweet itch chat. Not much has changed with our routine since last year, we are still opting for the weekly 'slosh wash' in a benzyl benzoate and neem oil solution, followed by an application of product in-between baths as required. So far we seem to have had good success with this strategy but I have a feeling this year is going to test us ... the midges have been relentless already!

Poor horses, they really are having a rough ride this year with the midges. 100% agree on a top notch sweet itch rug. I do find my fans in the stables help a lot.
Ooh I wish we could run fans in our stables .... Were off grid though 😭 bet they love them on hot days
Aww poor babies especially Blue, you know yourself when you have an itch that doesn’t go away it drives you nuts, it’s good that you looked at the ingredients on the expensive sweet itch treatment and decided to make your own version, l’m getting the citronella oil ready in my humidifier, I get very bad reactions when those bloody mosquitoes bite me, why were those blood sucking bugs part of evolution l don’t know, hope you and your beautiful horses have a good summer Ravers, tfs x Julie
I think they were just sent here to test us tbh 😂
Him having a little comb over made me laugh 🤣
I'm just glad he has enough left for a comb over 😂😂😂
To update on the little comb over .... It can no longer be called a comb over. Perhaps the world tiniest mohawk 😭😂😭
@@raversmead😂😂😂
The poor horses, wish I knew of something that helps xx
❤️
This is super interesting to watch! Poor guy. Looks like he’s very lucky to have someone that is looking out for him always!
Ben doesn’t suffer with sweet itch but he does have a mild-moderate reaction to fly bites from midges to black fly. I make my own fly sprays but find nothing lasts longer than a few hrs at best! Might have to add some neem I’ve used it before for my houseplants! Super helpful video ❤
Yeah fly sprays need to be reapplied frequently to keep them working, I'll be honest I've almost given up on them at this point. Neem seems to do the best though, I wonder if it's because it's SO stinky 😂
@@raversmead literally!! Like every 20 mins would be perfect I feel 🤦♀️ I unfortunately don’t have him at home or work from home so missing two components to have that be possible! I don’t even blame you it feels hopeless 🤣
Yeah I think it’s possibly one of the strongest and most foul smelling oils I’ve ever known! I have to light in sense if I use it on the plants 😑
I'd say Lara is a true sweet itch horse as without coverage & a lotion her dock becomes a bog brush face becomes all bloody & raw & looses mane & awful hives around her body. Like you I cover her head to toe good rug ( used fly mask in past might use snuggy hood this year) & night time turn out . Only thing I do different to you is I put Apple Cider Vinegar ( & or garlic) in her feed. Then it comes out in their sweat & the bugs hate the smell of it .
I've just bought the benzyl benzoate & neem oil on line right this minute! Going to be doing those slosh washes !😂
Oh yeah she sounds like she has it ☹️ poor girl!
Ooh the vinegar interests me .... I've thought about it for other health benefits for them but didn't realise it could repel bugs from the inside out. Might have to look more into that one ❤️
Omg I'm right there with you I literally just did a sweetitch video too eugghhh. Looking forward to your tips
Ooh great I'll give that a watch ❤️
Thanks for a fab video and the advice ❤
😘
Ahh yeah Angel gets them on her belly like that too. Luckily seems to be only the bit thats not covered by the rug so not too much to plaster cream on
Does she also drag herself along the ground trying to itch it? 😂 Blue has that manoeuvre mastered now
@raversmead haha yes she does this 😂
Heres a good tip for you that i learned the hard way. NEVER get benzyl benzoate in your eyes 😂😂😂
oh ... oh dear 🤣🤣🤣
@@raversmeadliterally thought I was going blind 😅
Couple of friends of mine used antihistamines and its made a differnce xx
I have heard of people trying this with varying levels of success. Might have to give it a go
Apple cider vinegar, the insects hate it and tend to stay away… downside is that we all smell like a chip shop 😂
Oooh no I love the smell of vinegar ... I wash my hair with it 🤣 Might have to give that one a go!
@@raversmead that’s a bonus then and me too (makes my hair shine and stops me getting bitten as well) 🤩 I use a coconut oil carrier and some essential oils too (cedar wood, lemongrass, tea tree or rosemary for hair growth) no chemicals so you can sponge it on their sheath, face and crest! We live close to lots of fishing lakes so a breeding ground for biting insects! 😭I’ve found this to be a cheap, long lasting and effective solution 👍🏼
@@amandasmith171 ooh I've not tried coconut as a carrier but have added it into other oils, my goodness it does wonders for their skin and hair. How do you keep it from solidifying though??
@@raversmead not a problem in the summer months with the vinegar and a glug of dish soap to emulsify! Amazon do a great coconut carrier oil 👍🏼 let me know if it helps you itchy boy 😀
Hey 😊- A few horses on my yard got the insol injection (the new sweet itch injection). I'd say it worked on 1/3 of the horses completely stopping the itching, 1/3 it made a small difference and 1/3 it did absolutely nothing. which lines up with other peoples experiences and the case studies online so I wonder if its worth asking your vet to try it next spring (they had it done in feb then march). a 1/3 chance of it making a difference isnt great odds but may be worth trying?
We tried that last year, I'm not sure if it made much, if any difference. It will be interesting to see how he does this year in comparison but this year is going to be rubbish for insects I think so we are already off to a bad start ☹️
Hi, great video again. Do you find blue gets very sweaty with the sweet itch rug on, I have a epic fly rug but my cob gets so hot she’s wet through with sweat so although she could do with the sweat itch rug I think she would just get too hot.
On very hot days yes ☹️ but he's more comfortable sweaty with the rug on than naked, so I guess it depends on the horse. I will drench the rug in cold water several times a day when its hot out

Ok thanks for your advice, keep the videos coming, always a joy to watch.
Does the kill itch solution cause the main to be all sticky and greasy or not?
Yeah it does unfortunately .... not as bad as some other products we have used, but they do need a good bath once a week to wash it all out again otherwise the dirt starts sticking to it and it gets a bit gross
Ah thats a pain isn't it. Luckily we seem to be doing well so far with just the rug and a load of cream under her udder area. Fingers crossed it continues to work 🤞
@@PonyFunWithCloverJasmine it is. Ain't no quick or easy fix for this one 😭
