- NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode, we go for a bit of a walk and take some pictures for you around lovely Whittle le Woods near to Chorley in Lancashire before setting off from the bottom of Johnson's Hillock Locks. As soon as our engine is fired up a lovely fellow boater is offering to assist with the first few locks, and it's not the last time someone helps us on the flight - we LOVE the boating community!!!
Once out of the locks we see some lovely scenery but also see a burnt-out old mill which was standing proud the last time we saw it. Not good. It's a lovely cruise though so come join us and soak it all in!!

Hi again, I'm so enjoying your trip along the L&L canal. So many beautiful spots are bringing back some great memories. We travelled along it 3 or 4 times in our 17 years of boating over there. Its sure nice to get some help on those heavy locks. Having another boat with you also is a bonus. My better half handled our boat as well as I so many times she drove the boat and I did those heavy gates. Take care. Looking forward to the next one.

My strength has definitely improved through boating. I remember when we first started out really struggling with the lock gear and the gates and feeling so weak and pathetic but now I approach the locks with confidence, although some of them are still a bit of a challenge. Thanks for the message 😍

Great vlog as always. When you were passing Wheelton boatyard I spied the gap in the moorings opposite where our boat should have been since the end of October. We got stuck on the wrong side of the breach at Foulridge and couldn't get back. We eventually made it through yesterday - yaaay! We passed Josh and gave him a little wave.
Oh how spooky is that!!
The breach at Wanless has been a pain hasn’t it?
We’ve been (thankfully busy with work stuff and some family commitments) so whilst it has impacted our plans it has allowed us to focus on putting some diesel in the tank.
Shame it sounds like it was a working day for us or else we would have helped you guys with the locks.
Safe travels back to Wheelton where you Sheba a superb spot!!!

Those locks looked like niagra falls.
I spotted a nice green open kayak canadian type like used to have.
My daughter was a baby and when on the canal barges went past us and they realised then why we were singing nursery rhythm 😅
We all had life jackets too.
My daughter later had a miniature single sofa seat I made fully upholstered best seat in the boat.
So much fun.
Now she paddles a proper tandem kayak with her mum and I'm on my single kayak.

Have to admit the idea of operating the boat remotely doesn’t appeal but each to their own and you have to appreciate the effort that has gone into making that work.
You guys have some serious history with kayaking and good on you for taking Millie on the water at such an early age. Probably some law these days to prevent that (droll) but a great way to get them used to and appreciative of our waterways 👍🤣
@NarrowEscape1 used to struggle getting my daughter out when she reached about 10 yrs now at 13 yrs she only kayaks mostly on the sea.
Canals last few times been just me and the wife on single kayaks wife Katie has a much easier paddle.
We both love the scenery and nature ie Kingfishers on occasions river mostly.
It's all good fun...

Honestly I’m sick of trying to convince Sue to drive JOSH into the locks but she just doesn’t want to do it. The obvious outcome of that is that she has to operate the locks instead, but she’d much rather do that than drive…go figure but we would say the vast majority of couple boaters do it this way…much rarer to see the ladies driving and the blokes doing the heavy locks…💪💪
Personally I’d like to have the variety but can’t see it happening anytime soon!

We saw what happened to your car which was ‘interesting’ and thought you both remained very professional on camera through it and Sue was mighty impressed Sonya with how you tackled the locks on the Napton Flight including your first solo lock - top work that 💪👍🤩
It was the windiest of days when we went down that flight and we got crashed into by another couple of CZcamsrs, although we didn’t know who they were at the time.

Have you bought a drone? We have just ordered one but properly worried we will just crash it! Sonya said she was impressed with Sue doing those massive gates. Did you do the Shroppie yet? We are thinking about it for the Summer would you recommend anywhere?@@NarrowEscape1

DJI 3 pro I think it's called. The DJI ones seemed to be the most recommended without spending a fortune. Havent tried it out yet. What have you got?
@sameshipdifferentday2023 yeah those are the ones most people recommend. We plumped for the DJI Pro 4 but the same thing really.
They are surprisingly nice to fly actually.
Have you done the test and got the operators licence for it? If not it’s probably worth doing to avoid issues with people with clipboards and adenoids!!!

I left the canals after sixty years of living on my narrow boat. And could never fault the narrow boaters .if you were in trouble..
They all made it Thier business to help you and others out.
Unfortunately this does not happen anywhere else.. other than on the canals .
Anyway folks stay safe and well. The life style you have chosen for yourselves . Can not be matched .
No where else can you move your home at the drop of a hat.. most anglers have enough sense to wind in their fishing line when they see a boat coming...
Unfortunately there are a few who believe that you should run around to avoid Thier fishing lines.???
It certainly looks like the spirit is largely alive and well Wayne. We’ve met some great boaters so far and each time we cruise we seem to meet more. Long May it continue!!!
As for the fisher people a surprising portion of them seem to look at you like you shouldn’t be there, inconveniencing them - madness!!
