I am a Montrealer, who just happened to find you on CZcams 5 months after I was laid off. The difference between you and I was that I was 61yrs. old and was laid off after 33yrs, of working at the same place. I too felt lost and insecure (who would hire me at my age?). Well, I kept following your journey, and it gave me the courage to know I wasn't alone in my journey. Even with our age difference, you inspired me. I went back to school and now at 63 yrs. old I have a job in a different field, Enjoying my new job and increased my income. Being laid off was the best thing that happened to me. Now the question is did I just happen to find you when I needed it or does the universe just work in mysterious ways....LOL. I am proud of you and very proud of myself too. ❤

I got laid off last May, as a technical writer. I wanted to try full-time independent contracting and that was the whole plan, husband was ready to make it work too…when a recruiter from a civil engineering company reached out. Now I am in a position where I can apply my biology AND technical communication degrees, and it came out of nowhere. It was scary. But it was worth it.

I was laid off at the end of last year, all while dealing with a breakup and a big move. So many life changes happened at once. I felt so sad, stressed, anxious, scared for the future but things are looking up! I accepted a new offer today🎉 Anyone going thru a lay off, stay strong and remember everyday is a new chance for opportunities! ❤️

I was layed off from my tech com two days ago but it wasn't a surprise for me as I wasn't related at all to the corporate world. I can now fully concentrate on my artistic career. Be focus on yourself do yoga, meditation or pray and SILENCE your projects or just tell them to your "soul family" be strong and trust on yourself you open a new chapter in your life.

Zoe, I worked for two startups very early in my career and I swore to myself I would NEVER work for a startup again. They take so much out of you--more so than any other job I had--primarily because it is, as you said, their everything. It becomes even worse when the founders or your superiors are micromanagers and have trouble seeing work as valuable when viewed through their own personal lens.
I find that people who start startups are used to excelling in life to some degree, and therefore believe THEIR way of doing things is the only path towards success when this simply isn't the case. When working with people like this, it is nearly impossible to thrive if you have a different opinion on how things should be done. Sometimes, it isn't that the deliverable is poorly done, it just isn't what they perceive as valuable lol.
I've been subscribed to your channel since 2022 and it's been such a fun journey seeing you and your channel grow so much in that time!
oh my gosh i resonate SO MUCH with this!! i feel like startup culture is so romanticized when it can really be so challenging and bad for a person’s self esteem (in terms or work ability) 🙃🙃 not to mention worse pay and total lack of stability

Yes!!! Loved this video. I left my job by choice 2 years ago because I was extremely unhappy there. I took a chance on myself and struggled for a long time. Getting a corporate job again and having that stability always sounded great but in the end taking a chance on yourself or following your true passion is always worth it💖

I'm a 30-something year old woman from Texas and not only do I remember the video, I rewatched it several times. I remember relating to all of your feelings, but also being inspired by the possibilities that laid before you.
It definitely wasn't easy, but girl, you handled these hurdles like a champ!!! I read that most elderly people don't regret things they did or said, but things they didn't do or say. I'm trying to incorporate this paradigm into my decision-making.
I worked with a money / job coach who gave me an exercise to write my best and worst case scenario obituaries. It was morbid, but really eye-opening to whether I'm living the life I want. This may be a cool video idea too! 😉

I have been following your videos since you first left PwC and I discovered your channel because I also was a consultant at PwC and hated my life lol. I finally left and I also ended up working at a startup that I thought was my "dream job" which really ended up being high stress. I got laid off last March and this video has been really helpful. I have been trying a bunch of freelance stuff without focusing on applying to other jobs that much and I'm not where I want to be yet, but this gave me hope and to trust the process. Thank you always for your authenticity and encouragement!

Hey Zoe, I found your channel back when I was contemplating leaving my workplace at the time. The place was extremely toxic putting employees against each other, not approving PTO not that we even had any PTO anyway (5 days per year). I had had enough and came home crying everyday from the stress and supervisors screaming and name calling at me for not completing a task quick enough or not doing enough. I wanted to quit but didn't have anything lined up. I saw your videos and gained the confidence to quit without anything lined up because you did it and succeeded. It was such a relief to be out of there and I had the time and energy to get together a quality resume and put in applications. I'm so happy with the job I ended up landing and everything worked out perfectly.
i'm in a similar situation - in a really toxic workplace with a toxic micromanaging boss and it's really made my mental health plummet. i'm terrified to quit without anything lined up, especially in today's job market. reading this makes me feel less alone!

you should be so proud of yourself in how far you've come! There is no shame in getting laid off because it probably will happen to each of us at some point in our lives and you're right, it's so important to took at finding purpose in that and the silver lining while at the same time not ignoring the hard feelings that often come with it as well. It can feel devastating at the time, but usually everything does work out OK! Cheers to two years!
I got laid off just over 1 year ago. I was working in real estate and the rate rises killed my employer’s sales (new builder). I went back to doing hair and after 6 months, I decided to open my own shop. It’ll be opening within 3 weeks. Getting laid off was the best thing for me because it pushed me back into doing hair and reignited my passion for barbering. My dad was laid off when I was a kid and it was the best thing in his career. All of this happens for a reason!!!

I also had a STRONG intuitive feeling months prior that it was going to happen. I'm actually so excited because I feel this is the universe's way of leading me to my actual life mission. “Restructure” is a kind way of letting someone go. I think they thought enough of you to be thoughtful and do what they thought was best for their company as they grew as well. I don’t think it’s a reflection of you it was really a combination of a number of things. It’s like the guy saying “it’s me not you”. End of the day it was probably the best thing for you as you’ve hit your stride being self employed and doing YT anyway. Same happened to me and I couldn’t be happier being my own boss, it does come with its own level of stress but you’re still in charge of your own life. You should be super proud of yourself.

AHHHHHH SO COOL!!!!!! EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR YOU, NOT TO YOU! I have been told that I am being made redundant after the 31st March and I literally COULD NOT BE HAPPIER! I don't even know how I could possibly go back to another 9-5 or CORPORATE JOB, I think I would actually cry! Im now on an ABSOLOUTE MISSION to work for myself ONLY! Last year I started a food tour business which is doing well (but of course relies on people booking on to the tour, and am now working hard to be consistent on CZcams and have that as another stream of income - CZcams IS SO HARD, but it's possible so I'm going to keep going! Hi Zoe! I found your channel when I was feeling burnt out from EY/Big 4 and then six month later I was laid off due to over-hiring during the pandemic. I wish I had enough courage to post my experience but I was very bitter at the moment so I didn't think it would look right. I always did my best to put on a strong smile in the past but now it feels more genuine. It took me 5 months until I got rid of all the Corp Big 4 stress from my body. I had physical complications from the stress and I was happy to finally heal while on unemployment. I took your path and started working at Orange Theory for a couple of months until I found my footing. I work there only on weekends while I am going to teach during the work week. I want to try Teaching so I can learn the skills and publish a book about Data Ethics. I want to bring light to the world and not work only for money. I made enough money and I wasn't happy at the moment. I am a lot happier now trying to find my footing. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I'm really glad things worked out for you, but sadly that's not the case for me and many others. I was laid off around the same time you were and I haven't been able to find anything since. Not even a minimum wage job at Walmart (they don't want me either). I was crushed when I was laid off. I really liked my job and I felt like I was actually getting useful experience. It was different from the time I was laid off before that (I liked the work but not as much and I found a job relatively quickly after).
This most recent layoff definitely didn't lead to better things in my case. Not at all. The one before it did. But this one basically ended my career and made me unemployable, apparently, even though it wasn't my fault. My position was eliminated because the work dried out.
Now I'm officially considered "that failure cousin". The "black sheep of the family". The one who had "so much potential" but failed in life. I get so much crap for this. I was getting crap from my relatives when I was employed because I wasn't making much. But now it's a lot worse.

Girl, I got let go from a toxic job a long time ago, and I remember all the feels of shame and wanting to avoid social situations where you’d have to tell people what you do for a living. But there were better plans in place for me and I’m much happier now!

That video brought me to your channel and inspired me to have more than one stream of income in case of emergencies like this. My coworkers and I were slowly pushed out of our employment at a bank years ago when our branch closed. They didn’t lay us off; instead, they sneakily cut our hours by only having us come in for four hours a day, five days a week. I ended up having to move in with my parents and then join the army. Companies don’t give a crap about us.
2 years can change a lot that was just a setback during that time but look how far you came ❤❤

You did something really difficult and succeeded. The shame regarding applying for emploement insurance is real. I've heard the stigma that people on it are lazy, won't go back to work etc.. which is BS.
I got laid off in 2022 and thought about EI, but took another work offer my boss lined up since I was in a difficult situation (caregiving for my mom). I took it even though I didn't want to. Being unemployed before and during the pandemic made me self concious about work gaps, throw in debt and a dying parent which puts you in survival mode. Now the debt is paid, I have a little f-u money, mom is gone, and now I'm trying to figure out how to pivot.
You're just the best, Zoe! Your growth over the last few years has been truly inspirational and honestly I don't think you would be where you are, were you to not have gone through what you've gone through. I have loved watching your journey here on CZcams and cannot wait to see what is to come! You rock, girl!!

I wasn't fired exactly, but I thought I was going to be, so I was basically forced to quit because I thought it would be easier to explain later on. That job paid well, but was very stressful, boring, and intense. I don't miss it or my dick of a boss. I just work part time now, on a pretty strict budget, but I am very happy with the freedom. Not sure what is next though.

I was in the same boat in terms of not filling out the forms and HATING taxes/accounting. It sucks that the process is so convoluted that it deters people who are entitled to it.

I remember i found you by watching the other one 2 years ago becasue I was fired to and I was trying to cope with it at the time.
Just lost my job as a 23 year old who moved into his first apartment and haven't even been here for six months. Pretty much the day that I got fired I sort of just made up in my mind that it was a part of God's plan and it didn't hit me too hard. Today I am getting drug tested to start my new job for a repo company, and applying to get into the local electrician union. God will always shake up your life to get you where you need to be.

Oh hunny get used to it, it will happen quite a few times in your career. Recently my job was advertised behind my back because another staff member made a huge error and somehow it was my fault as I only just joined and I was her manager. Sh!t happens, move on.
