    I've really been happy with this boot oil. I use it with clean, bare hands without issue. It wipes away clean without too much oily residue or anything. The sawmills definitely look great, and I keep thinking I need to add these to my collection.

    I strongly recommend getting your hand on Smith's Leather Balm. It's made in the USA and is just 3 ingredients. It darkens initially but once absorbed, returns to the normal color. It's the best 'leather conditioner' I've ever used.

    Correction! If you don't want to darken the leather on your Red Wing 875, you should have used "Red Wing Leather Cream", item No. 97095. Description: Our Leather Cream is a conditioner that can be used on all smooth-finished and oil-tanned leather. This Leather Cream is formulated to condition without darkening or adding shine.

      The boot oil has mink oil in it which will be beneficial for a winter tasked boot. Leather cream I would associate more with a boot you use more for style

  • @dark_gravity_edc

    Red Wing has a conditioner that doesn't darken the leather. All Mink oil based products will darken. Neatsfoot oil based products will not darken the leather.

  • @GarmologyVideo
    @GarmologyVideo Před 3 lety +1

    I use quite a lot of boot oil, or Neatsfoot oil (more generic). Great for softening up the dry leather, giving it back a bit of the original flexibility. Oil for longevity, wax for shine.

    I suggest giving the boots a proper cleaning with a saddle or leather soap with warm water. Let dry for 24 hours. The Red Wing All Natural Boot Oil will condition the leather. To really waterproof them, I would use Granger's G-Wax a day after. Rub in by hand and then melt it into the leather with a hair dryer. They will be waterproof!

    Nice. I picked up these boots along with 2926 and the very rare 2932 Black Briar. I imagine this oil Would only work with 2927 and 2932 as the 2926 are Suede like Materials.
    Thanks for sharing. I don't think the boots came out dark at all, mine are Dark just like after you re-oiled them. They were light before re-oiling them, because they dried up and lost their natural oils.

    In the USA we have a product Pecard Classic Leather Dressing that provides similar leather cleaning and conditioning and leaves an equal finish IMO at a better price. I use it on my Sawmills Briar Oil Slick and Charcoal Rough and Tough leathers with great satisfaction.

  • @UncleChoppy
    @UncleChoppy Před 3 lety

    Brilliant stuff! The Sawmills look fantastic after a bit of wearing-in and the briar oil slick would appear to scrub up nicely. You'll be enjoying them for many winters to come.
    On a related note, I seem to remember you were saying that you were going to start making your own laces, out of paracord IIRC. I was really interested in this idea for two reasons:
    1. For a fat bloke I have quite thin ankles so my boots tend to be tied quite tightly with lots of excess lace flapping about. Therefore the idea of custom length laces appeals greatly.
    and 2. I'm also not very well off and a new pair of coloured laces is a good way of sprucing up an old pair of boots and give a different look!
    Did you ever get anywhere with this project? (Apologies if I misunderstood and it was someone else making the laces.)

      It's called Magic Yellow Dubbin made by The Magic Polish Co.Ltd of Leicester. No ingredients are on the tin...the colour is less yellow, more a dark brown. I remember using it on my DM's at school in the late 90s...

    • @GrahamAtDesk
      @GrahamAtDesk Před 2 lety

      @@DevonReviewer It's made from oil, tallow and natural wax. I was always taught the best way to apply it was with your fingers, as your body heat softens it and makes it easier for it to soak in. It's certainly true, that does help. You need something like Swarfega to get it off your hands afterwards though. A rubber glove is an option, but I think warming your boot slightly with a hairdryer is a more sustainable option.
      In the 80's I heard that Dubbin wasn't as good as (the similar) solid NikWax, as Dubbin could damage the stitching. I've not heard that recently though and suspect it's rubbish.
      Just don't put too much on, you can overdo it. Apply lightly, let it soak in (possibly warming it a little), leave for a while, then wipe off any excess.
      And don't use it on suede or Nubuck.

    Be careful with coconut based products on your boots. The coconut oil can begin to rot and ruin your boots. It should be ok if applied very sparingly and your boots do not get wet, but I avoid it as there are better products that do not involve this risk.

    May give the boot oil a try, been thinking about it for a while. By the way i love the colour of your 875's and the sole. Mine are needing a re sole soon, think i will opt for the same sole you have. I seem to have worn out the normal sole in a yr.

    • @DevonReviewer
      @DevonReviewer  Před 3 lety

      Yep, if you are walking in concrete / tarmac a lot the christie soles wear quickly.. a year is pretty quick though, I am guessing you supinate / overpronate like me, so the heel goes extra quick? I m coming to the conclusion that darkening is inevitable for the 875 and the boot oil is actually great if you accept that, most people also seem to enjoy the deeper darker tones!

  • @_bats_
    @_bats_ Před 3 lety

    Bick 4 is a great all-around conditioner, especially if you don't want to darken the leather much, but something a bit more waterproof (like that boot oil) is definitely the way to go for something that will be seeing a lot of weather.

    • @DevonReviewer
      @DevonReviewer  Před 3 lety

      Thanks, Bick 4 is silicon based isnt it? Will need to try out at some point!

  • @LinusScrubTips
    @LinusScrubTips Před 7 měsíci

    This will lighten up a bit as it distributes and soaks in. It’s the best compromise between a hardcore oil and a “balm” like bick 4.
    I would use on medium to dark leathers, only on light leathers if they are extremely parched. On light leathers like the oro-legacy it can darken a bit like you said.
