    Thanks for that awesome thorough review. I was debating between both of these mics for my Sony a7riii, and it’s going to definetly be the mke. I loved how you turned the mics around, with the mke it sounded like you really were behind me. Mke sounds crisper, less hard than vmp. I think they are both awesome, but the mke is just perfect. I do like the design, very eye catching.

      Thanks so much for watching!! I agree, I love the MKE. Sennheiser in general make awesome mics. I love Rode as well but like you said the crisper sound of the Sennheiser is really quite nice. The build quality is incredible as well, a really great mic. Hope you enjoy it! :)

    Nice job. I have a Sennheiser wireless headphone set-up using that cord mount. One concern vs. a plug in version is that input can get frayed /crimped and might render the entire mic useless since the input is more a permanent fix. A plug-in adapter can be easily replaced if problem with juncture occurs.

    Scott, I'm looking for a mic that I can mainly use outside and for music. Is the MKE 440 still a way to go? Or should I get something else? I also have the GH 5.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  Před 4 lety

      The 440 is great for an on camera outdoor mic because it tends to take in the environment a bit more than a standard shotgun mic. But it depends if you're looking for an on camera mic or need something like a pin mic, or if you're going for music, what/how will you be recording it. If you're using an on camera mic at a bit of a distance (more than 5-6 feet ish) they'll all sound pretty average and the differences might be less important than the drop in quality at that distance. It will definitely depend on what/how you plan to record.

    Hey there =) hope you are still reading this. Really appreciate ur reviews! I want to start making "silent" hiking film where I hike but dont talk. Just catching the ambience etc. I am torn between the rode stereo mic x and the sennheiser. Sometimes it can be nice to have a more directional mic for streams, cooking food with the stove, setting up camp or having some reduced noise of people passing by. But I am afraid the directional stereo might be too confusing when capturing wider angles and broader imagery? any thoughts? Kind regards.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi! That's a tough one. I think that the MKE 440 would do a good job though. It's directional enough for those cases but it still does a good job of putting you in the environment. The rode felt so "open" to me it almost felt like an omnidirectional mic at times. If you're going EXTREMELY wide, then maybe it could work out, but for 90+% of the shots I imagine that the MKE440 would put you there but at the same time highlight the sounds of what's actually in the frame. Hope that input helps!

      Scott Dumas Hey! I eventually got the MKE440 for my trip and after reviewing the footage I am blown away by the sound. I exactly 100% agree. I testet a Friends Video mic x and it was too broad. You could almost sometimes did not focus on the visual due to the sound turning into a mess of noise. Thanks for your review and advice! Much appreciate it!

    Would this mic work when streaming debates with up to 8 participants? Or would you than rather recommend the Rode VMP+?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  Před 3 lety +1

      Between this and the VMP+, I think this would do better... however there are probably better options available. Individual mics (lapel mics or any mic on a small table stand) going into a mix board (even a fairly cheap one) would be a larger investment but far better result. If your budget is very tight though, the MKE440 will pick up a bit of a wider area in a more natural way I believe, compared to the VMP+

  • @ArunBarnard
    @ArunBarnard Před 6 lety +4

    While the sennheiser obviously has superior sound quality, I like how the Rode doesn't cut out as much noise from the back of the mic. When vlogging you tend to point the camera at things and talk, and the sennheiser is not going to pick up any of that.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  Před 6 lety +2

      Very good point! And I totally agree :)

    • @JDW-
      @JDW- Před 6 lety +3

      I disagree. I often will take the GH5 out with my son and ask him questions from behind the camera. Using the GH5's built-in mics, if I set the levels to be perfect to pick up his voice, my voice from behind the camera is so loud it clips. So having a mic that attenuates my booming voice while picking up my subject (keeping our respective vocal volumes about the same) is just perfect.
      By the way, Scott, I heard a lot of wind noise on your MKE 440. Did you really have a dead cat on the mic when you made that recording? If so, it doesn't seem to be the most ideal dead cat.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  Před 6 lety +3

      In practice I'm not sure how significant the actual difference would be... perhaps it would make an interesting test to focus on that specifically :)
      Also, the wind was insanely strong that day so even with the dead cat there was some wind noise. I coincidentally made a test video today (will post in the morning) specifically testing the wind noise on the MKE 440 using no dead cat, with and without the high pass filter then with the dead cat, with and without the high pass filter. It was, again, insanely windy today so you can still hear the wind in all the clips (only something like a larger blimp can really cut that out significantly), but when using the dead cat there is a huge improvement. The high pass filter makes an additional improvement too, but wind is wind and if you're using any microphone like this when it's considerably windy you'll just have to deal with the noise a bit I think. With the dead cat though it avoided clipping and the audio was still useable, it's just obviously a windy day.The high pass filter cut it out pretty effectively except during the absolute strongest gusts.
      Best solution would not be stupid like me and don't film on excessively windy days haha. I think my face froze out there today :-D

  • @Sol-In-Seoul
    @Sol-In-Seoul Před 2 lety

    I had *two* Rode microphones fail; on both the Stereo Videomic Pro and Stereo Videomic X one capsule died. As a pro audio guy with 20+ years experience, I don't think Rode knows what they are doing, it's basically consumer junk. This Sennehsier is consumer grade too, but I'll give it a try as they at least know pro audio. It would be great is someone actually made a pro-grade mic of DSLRs.

  • @nordfresse
    @nordfresse Před 5 lety

    I dont see why you would crank the mic output all the way up and then turn the camera levels down too low, so that you have to push the signal in post again. Doesnt sound good and certainly makes it almost impossible to judge the mics quality.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  Před 5 lety +4

      It's a pretty typical way to use a mic like this- the preamps in the mic are usually better than in the camera so turning the camera levels down and using the mic's preamps instead should give better quality, but if you set the levels "perfect" in camera, you risk clipping with any change in audio level. So, you'll usually record somewhere around -12dB in camera to avoid accidental clipping, then boost it in post. It's the way a mic will typically be used, so it's an absolutely appropriate way to judge the mic's quality.

    • @nordfresse
      @nordfresse Před 5 lety

      @@ScottDumas Thats true, maybe I just didnt like the EQ settings you went for. Watching the video again, I realized that the Sennheiser actually sounded very very good when you tested it on the GH5 inside. Maybe the Canon preamps are just that bad. Do you own that mic and still use it? I am torn wether or not its a good idea to record both stereo ambient sound and voice at the same time. Professionally you would of course record it seperatly and mix it in post so you can adjust the levels seperately. But most vloggers dont bother doing that so I guess its better than just a mono recording.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  Před 5 lety +3

      @@nordfresse I think the big difference between inside and outside (or just generally when I need to have Canon's preamps higher) is the distance from the mic. The closer you are, the better they'll sound- not only true of these mics. Having to turn Canon's levels up means I'm a little further from the mic so it won't sound quite as good as when I was very close like indoors. I do still own the Sennheiser and use it from time to time but the Deity D3 Pro has been my go-to mic lately. It's not stereo but it's cheaper and I think sounds a little better. I have a review/comparison of those as well on my channel. Also- I've compared the Sennheiser stereo mic to the Rode stereo mic, and while the rode really captures everything around you fairly equally, drowning your voice out more, the Sennheiser does a good job of still focusing on your voice and only what's in the camera frame. It's stereo only in the fact that you can hear things more in one ear than the other when they're a little off to one side of your frame, like you would in reality. It's a very natural way to hear a video I think. It's still a super-cardioid pickup pattern, which means it will reject off axis sound from the sides and some from the rear, just like the VMP+ or Deity D3 Pro for that matter. They all have very slight differences in how much they reject that off axis sound, but I think the word "stereo" can be a misnomer- it just means the left and right will be recorded separately so you can hear them appropriately in your left or right ear. It's not a 360 mic or even quite as "wide" as Rode's stereo video mic. Hope that helps
