- This week we work on the shop air system by adding a extra hose reel outside the shop to make things nicer when the weather isn't that great or I'm not around to open the doors for those folks that need air.

Steve, I love the idea of the outdoor hose reel. But a couple of things I want to let you know from experience. First, in cold weather, the o-rings in those reels seem to shrink and cause an air leak. Secondly, I highly recommend adding shutoffs and/or a quick disconnect just ahead of your hose reel. That way if it ever starts leaking or you want to change it out, you can isolate it without having to depressurize your whole air system.

When I have to crawl into the tight space in the attic, besides nearly stroking out, one of those roofing nails always seems to get me. Some people never learn.
As an FYI, if you are using a "name brand", quality, "standard projection", off-the-shelf taper pipe tap, the tapping depth is approx. 12 threads back. During manufacture, we (in this case GTD) thread a ring onto the tap to size it. The large end face of the ring represents the top of the tapped hole and the "12 thread" location. If you happen to cut off the front end to shorten it (Short Projection for shallow applications), it's approx. 5 threads from the back.

Make or find a cap to cover the end of the quick connect. I know from experience that the ends of air tools and quick connects are a dirt dobber's dream come true...
I keep all my air tools hung in a little metal wall cabinet with closed doors for this very reason. Texas dirt dobbers are no joke!

Great Idea Steve & love the machining that went along with it. You are correct about the look though. On the corner under the side overhang would be where I would have moved it after placing it where you did. I always do it better the 2nd time around :)) Just ask my wife!!
You may want to seal up the hole for the air line coming through the outside wall to keep wasps from nesting in your attic.

Don’t forget if the hose is not rated for low temperatures, it could be difficult to unroll or even crack. Thanks for the video.

I would get some of that spray paint that's made to bond to plastic and blast that neon green into a black color. That would go a long way to making it disappear against the shop.

Great job Steve! I am just installing my compressor right now. I want an outdoor capability just so I can work outdoors in the summer, but like you, I can't leave the door open because of the humidity (and heat!). I'm leaning towards just having a coil of hose near the door, and a chuck outside because of the same issues you mentioned. We would have hornets in the summer and Asian beetles in the fall filling-up and enclosed unit, and the sun would destroy the rubber pretty quick on an open unit. I will be curious to see what makes a home in your unit. here, a mud dauber would fill up the chuck right away, and I plan to cover mine

I've seen a guy do this & I agree with it.
Mount & adjust the cutoff tool upside down in the tool holder, cut in reverse.
That way as the carrige & the tool flexes, it flexes away from the workpiece.
Eliminating the tool from moving into the workpiece eliminating the chatter & Binding..😊
Gas stations still supply air here in Sweden, but often you have to go inside the station to borrow the tire pressure gauge, as they tend to get stolen...

Hi Steve. Nice upgrade for the shop. I hope one day to have shop air plumbed in nice like you do. Until then, I can roll my compressor to where I need it. I wonder if you could pop one of the side-covers off the old hose reel to check for birds or wasps, without destroying it.

Steve i started watching your channel during the shed rebuild. So when you were placing the outdoor hose reel high above i thought you were mad. Then kicked myself given the sliding doors. I should have known better ;-) Keep up the good work mate, I lived in Cincinatti in the early 2000's and loved the difference between Kentucky and Ohio ( My preference was Kentucky) it was much more like Australia!

Any time I want to over work my core muscles I also do those tasks that require crawling in the attic, stretching out awkwardly on the support beams. 😁
Most people don't take the fitting off the air hose then put it through the wall it makes a much smaller hole! easer to seal.
Some type of hose cover on the part of that hose that is always out will make it last a lot longer. UV light destroys hose pretty quick.
That attic corner gives me a claustrophobic episode just watching the video 🤪
Nicely done and an addition that just makes sense.
Generally to get the Full Volume in Air systems...you start with the Largest size piping/hose and reduce down as needed for each outlet in your system....you can't get maximum CFM if you are doing it backwards... smaller to bigger.... i understood your reasoning and just passing on my experience in Air Lines....

WooHoo. Our Steve is back again. Hi bud. Any time you make these upgrades to the shop you are investing in your self. Anything that saves time automatically pays for itself. This whole project has benifited yourself and family. Remember the day tou desided to fix a building that for all pourposes should have been taken and starting from scratch ? For that outside reel you should make a stopper that fits the opening closely to keep the critters out.

Steve, guess there must be a reason why you didn't run the airline down the outside corner of the shop wall, clear of the sliding door and mount the reel at chest height on the side wall? Would be more convenient access, (no ladders involved) if you have to work on the reel, just thinking out loud. Good to see you back in the saddle.

Perhaps the enclosed hose reel wants a generous shaking of baby powder to lube the hose. Talc fixes stuff and smells like baby!
maibe build a wooden or poliester cup that mounts around the hose and absolutely wraps around the hole where the hose comes out of
you might need to squirt a bit of antifreese in the outdoor hose or unroll it completely and blow a lot of air out while keeping the end down during freeses as theres allways some moisture in the hose and it might split the hose when it taws again
With my ancient lathe with its four jaw chuck, it would be faster and easier just to go to the store! Sometimes you have to pick your battles!

When l built my 3000sq ft workshop l had 4 outside outlets fitted, a worthwhile job .
I have found, as I am sure you have too, that a substantial amount of shop time is spent improving the shop! All good fun, enjoyed watching that Steve!

ive got that same bit set, with the little ratchet and extension, great under dash and tight spots...
I’ve got the exact same one and I use it a lot, more than I thought I would. If you have a tough screw to get out, you can really put some torque on it using that little ratchet. I’ve got a set of adapters for my 1/4” drive Dewalt that has hex head to 1/4”, 3/8” and 1/2” drive so I can use about any tool or extension with it. I haven’t used the 1/2” but it’s there if I get in a tight spot.
I don't remember what you have for a dryer on your air system. I am praying that it is a good one. Here in Nebraska I have problems with water freezing in hose reels in the winter. I too am concerned with the potential for bird and insect interference. I have and use 2 of the enclosed air reels and I would prefer to have open reel style reels. I have had insect problems with my reels in the past. Thank you for the contribution that you give to the machining community. I look forward to each of your videos. I like to use the loctite Hydraulic sealant for pipes works great and never leak.
Holy Cow, I just looked at Amazon for that and it’s expensive! I don’t use a lot anymore so I might have to some, it easier to pay a little more that have to tear something apart because one joints leaking.
Attic Steve.. "If I get heatstroke, can you guys carry me back down?" made me chuckle :) As a very un-limber, overweight guy though, my brain couldn't quite comprehend how you hopped up on the top of those cabinets like it was nothing to do the leak check!

Hey Steve, one thing you may want to do is have something to secure that outside hose reel so it doesn't go banging itself against the wall during a windy storm. I could see not only the unit getting destroyed, but also the airline getting pinched. Great vid - I really enjoy shop upgrades.

I wondered if a plumbing fixture escutcheon (trim plate that covers the hole where a pipe would come through) would work on that. I’ve seen ones that are hinged to fit over existing pipes, just secure it with a screw or two.

I have 3 hose reels, 2 inside the shop and 1 outside under the eave. Having outside air is nice.
Please never bring us into the attic EVER again. Felt like we were escaping Shawshank 😅. Good to see ya again Steve love the work

Compressed air, cold weather, and air tools generally don’t play well together. Be ok for pumping up a tire. Should be fine in warmer weather.
I ( just my opinion ) would have mounted the outside setup...on your other wall ... and lower... alot easier to use or fix if it jammed up etc..) and i would put a Quick connect to remove that air line reel as needed and put a quick hanging setup to remove and install when i need it... and probably some kinda box to keep it covered when not used... especially if left outside permanently?
Why not take a look inside to see if it can be fixed to wirk better??

I'm out hose reel airlines on the ceiling above my machines pull down the line where I need it thought we tracked out of the way when I don't I gave up entirely on having wall mount air fittings it's just too much trouble compared to having them retracting the seal the harbor freight ones work fine I've used them for years.
My shop air system has a solenoid valve (oversized to not affect flow) between the compressor tank and the pipework, activated by an illuminated switch just inside the door. That way the compressor can stay on all the time, but I'm not going to burn out the compressor if there was a failure in the pipework. That outside hose reel is asking to fail at some point. I'd fit a solenoid inline with the reel if nothing else. A pullcord switch could then be used to turn it on and off. Combine it with an outside light and you have a perfect combination for airing up a tyre after dark.
Pipe fitting test depth = 2&a half to 3&a half turns in by hand..
I have that same reel (its branded different (Reelworks), but it appears identical down to the mounting holes. I also had some choice words mounting it, it's sure not light. 3 years into owning it it still works great, no leaks. As for the green out outside I might be tempted to give it an aerosol overhaul to make it blend into the building a little better, at least for the 2 green panels and maybe the hose going into the building.
Sounds like you should have purchased two hose reels. Suspect you will eventually when you're POed enough. lol

Nice job Steve. 1/2" hose is a good choice, but I did when I was working (retired) make the company buy and stock 1/4" and 3/8" hose. My job back then required me to hand drill precision holes that only allowed +.002, and with the larger 1/2" it was really difficult and sometime impossible to do. Just to stiff and bulky.

Hi Steve from Tasmania, just a thought re nesting birds in the hose reel if you put a block/board/foam/rubber behind the stop it will block the hole without hindering operation cheers John

Is there anyway you could fab something up that would fit on the hose stop that would cover the holes in the outdoor hose reel? Maybe use a plastic plug like you would use on a hydraulic hose to keep critters from building mud nests in the quick connect. Just thinking, that’s all, probably aught to quit that before I hurt myself.

The only possible problem I can see is with the outside unit. Where I live when it gets cold any water accumulated in the line will cause it to freeze up and plug off until it's brought inside and thawed out. With your temperatures there it is unlikely that this will ever happen but for those who may wish to use this in the northern climes they may want to consider it.
