- This week we make a new coolant spray nozzle for the grinder that I am going to call the Renzetti magic cooling fingers for no reason other than it sounds cool. This is a idea that I picked up from Robin over a year ago and i decided to make one for myself.

I used to make up a similar system using 3/8 refrigeration tubing by pressing about 3” or so closed against a piece of .025-.030” shim stock bend a 90 at the appropriate spot cut and flare the end and attach to the lightweight ball valves from McMaster. Install a tubing barb to the valve and mount using heavy duty metal tubing clips.
Grinder hands could have a few different lengths that could be changed out easily. Easy to make and kept the flow where needed and off the floor, walls and most important out of the air.

Hi, I missed seeing you last week. I trust you are just being your normally busy self my friend. I love these one off shop improvement builds. In my mind they are money in the bank and can pay themselves back in either wheel or loss of coolant or finishes. I was bored the other day and wandered about the early days for you when in the old shop and you with not a grey hair. I must say you are a lot more comfortable in front of the camera these days. That took me to some of my own almost unable to speak fluidly in the post. That/this is a fun one and I can see it being used by many of your followers. That type M copper tubing is very hard and doesn't form well. If you aneal it with some heat (a nice rosy red) it will soften up and be easy to work. I picked that up from a maker who makes copper roses using copper tubing. Nice project that I will make for my surface grinder. Thanks Steve (and Robin).

Nice practical addition. The cleaner is a bit slow on the dusting. Also needs a bigger brush. A 4" skirted uniform and a little apron wouldn't be lost either. The overseer woke up long enough to eat lunch.
Steve little tip your right on track smashing the copper pipe making a nozzle i found i would take a even spaced apart number of steel filler rod in 3/32 weld them together missing every other one use a ♒️♒️♒️♒️〰️〰️〰️〰️

Us in Louisiana are hitting 102 degrees, 54 % humidity, heat index is 104. We do get a gulf breeze in the morning and evening. Super duper cooling fingers, thanks for sharing. A your temp is no joke.

Steve I feel your pain. Here in the Pacific NW; I live in a canyon on the western slopes of the Cascades. Normally summers here are warm and mild. Today it will hit 90 and for the next week (at least) it will be 100+ with typical high humidity.

note 2: I HAVE been frog gigging but I will raise you one; as a kid on my grandad's ranch in central Texas. we once went.. Water Moccasin. gigging. The stock tank was infested and they would bite the cattle when they came to drink so we came down at night and filled burlap sack after burlap sack with the critters. Grandma aunts my aunts cooked up a mess of them with greens and yes it DID taste like chicken!

Quick trick I found for heating plastic tube like the straws., Heat up a cup of water in the microwave and dip in you tubes they will stretch perfect fit. and will shrink to fit when they cool. Cup lasts about 30 min before reheat required.
What was wrong with the heat gun? Did I miss something? It seemed to work just fine.
I can see perhaps a couple of brass knobs with 1/4 20 stems on them for ease of adjustment. LOL, like most things home built, a work in process.

Here's a suggestion.
I make motorcycle chain lubricators. All the commercial units on the market use some form of tube to deliver the lubricant to the chain and they all suffer from uneven oil delivery.
I use a polyurethane flap that contacts the chain and the oil is delivered to the surface of the flap and flows down evenly onto the chain .
Try using this concept to guide the coolant to flow to where you want it. It can be a flexible flap of any suitable plastic or even a small brush.
And if it gets caught in the wheel , a plastic flap is unlikely to make the wheel break up.
Those copper tube fingers are more likely to cause some excitement when they go under the wheel.
A few rows of nylon bristles would be safe, but a PU flap bigger than the gap might be a bit chewy at that spindle speed
The "copper tube fingers" are nowhere near the wheel. That is the reason for the plastic straws! You need to listen and pay attention to the video before you comment. He explains this entire operation.
Great job. I’m surprised you don’t use a valve that has more turns than just a quarter. That would make the coolant stream a Little more adjustable.

You can get creative with the copper. You make a good point with not running to get the fitting. It’s not just the cost of the fitting.

Since you're just about out of flux. Oatey sells a tinning flux that comes in a can with a green label. Buy that flux. You'll thank me later. They sell it at the big box lumber stores. It's the best flux I've ever used. I used to use the yellow stuff but I never looked back after using the stuff in the green can. It makes a fool proof joint every time.

Add a second valve like a needle or gate to more finely adjust the flow. Use the original ball valve for on and off only.
If you like challenges, add a v notch to the existing ball channel to improve the low-flow control. You can probably find a commercial one pretty easily, but making one would be way more fun.
I second 4575's suggestion of a needle or gate valve. The ball valve is great for on/off applications, but not fine adjustments. Check with McMaster/Carr for valves. Thanks for the video. Jon

Gate valves are designed to be fully open or closed more than metering. A needle would be fine.
Function over form Steve. Are you balancing your grinding wheels? I don’t recall you mentioning that in videos. I found that really ups the quality of the finish. The adapters with balancing weights for my Jones and Shipman grinder run over $300 each (the spindle has the European taper) which drove me to making a cup with adjustable weights. The results were a remarkable difference. I may work up a nozzle system like this one. Great job, as per the usual.

Try to keep maximum coolant on the part and minimum coolant on the wheel. When you achieve that balance the mess is reduced x10.

my issue is if not using the grinder regularly the coolant always evaporates. i use mine dry and if critical i let cool and do a last small grind
I am the same about the temporary stuff becomes permanent. I don't want to hear any complaints about it being hot. I'd gladly take your weather. We haven't seen a day under 100* in 3 months and still have another month to go with temps of 104-110* daily. Some days it's 100* by 10 am and still 100* at 9pm. And it only gets down to the low 80s at night.
I gave up doing anything outside or in the shop so no videos till maybe October when fall starts. The concrete slab of my shop is 93* now and I don't have enough AC in it to get everything cooled down to work in there. I have been wanting to move out of TX since I was forced to move here in 89 and now I'm just angry that I live somewhere the weather sucks year round. And that's pretty common as most people are angry and not friendly here because it's so unbearably hot most of the year.
We have had 99-103 temps in La for about 20 days, with at least 10 more forecasted. We're cranky, but not angry. The good thing about a heat wave is that it feels so much better when it's over!
@@Bob_Adkins I wish it was that nice here. We are 3 months into it now and no relief till late september. We don't call it a heat wave it's just summer here every year. We just hope for a hurricane for a day of relief from the high clouds. The rain never makes it this far inland.
It's still 95* at midnight here. Here it's not like it's 100+ for an hour or two it's usually 8-10 hours a day and the ground and everything else is heat soaked. Our cold tap water is 90* because the ground gets so hot.
We might get lucky and get a one day break and only be 100* on Tuesday.

Great idea Steve and I’ll be making one for my English 1943 number 2 Brown & Sharp. Unfortunately a previous owner removed all the automatic feeds so it’s fully manual 2B now. The “B” was a hand control only model and I find it’s not too bad as I don’t do a lot of work on it and it’s a kind of mindfulness using it. Thanks for the excellent channel. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺
Why are soldering on a heat sink (section of railroad track)? I keep a few firebricks under the bench for chores like fabricating Renzetti Fingers. Good for gas welding little projects, too.
Last thing I saw, his soldering worked quite well.

Steve, just my opinion but, your beautiful square body would be even better looking (she does look great as you have it..) with regular sealed beam halogen headlamps..or some H4 conversion lamp housings.
Only way i have gotten amazing surface fonish is with flood coolant right at the buisness i constanly use to watch and adjust the spray nozzle other guys walked away.. they asked me many times whT i did different.. in which i replied take pride in my work 🙃
Wouldn't putting the nozzle the other side of the wheel avoid the sucking under problem? slightly offset so the sparks aren't aimed at it?
The wheel needs to draw the coolant to the grind. Why would you want to spray it into the action??
Good little idea that one. Hopefully I pick up my new to me surface grinder next month. This'll be one of the first things that gets made. Do you have a link to Robins video? I had a look but couldn't find it.
I wonder what happens if you lose a straw between the wheel and the workpiece?(or did I miss that?)
Steve suspects/hopes that since it's soft plastic it will be quickly ground into dust.
Some of that straw will probably gum up the grinding wheel but that’s a quick fix with redressing the wheel…hopefully. Lol
Hello Steve 😅 Tell me, why is it that whenever someone turns low gas on, the first thing they do is repeatedly tap the gauge? It's like if I tap the gauge, it will create more gas. I do it, too.😅
I guess it's hoping for that 1 in 10000 chance that it is a bad gauge and not actually a low gas cylinder 😄

I'm rewatching some of your videos and was wondering have you ever used a magnetic base for camera mount or anything else mounting ? The type that is switched off and on? Was thinking of making something for a slow moving sign for my lawn mower and trailer that I can pull with it.

Nice idea. My only concern would be if one of the straws drooped down for some reason. On the return stroke the part(s) being ground could catch it and push the whole thing back which could rotate the nozzle downwards and if not caught could hook onto the part(s) on the forward stroke and cause a crash.
My "only concern" is that the aliens will move from New Mexico to Kentucky and steal this cool idea!
Too hot? Why not get yourself one of those DIY MiniSplit HVAC systems? I think 2 tons would be sufficient for your space but do get some other opinions based on your local climate. And many of these MiniSplit systems are heat pumps so they can provide heating as well. Would save you the hassle of firing up your wood stove for short jobs. Plus we get an excellent install video with the Steve Summers high standards at play.
I have a 2 ton mini-split in my garage. I tell you what, it is great having it where I can comfortably work in my garage all year.
Riddle this. Guy calls me and asked if I would come dress the mag chucks on two of his grinders because he was having trouble. He had been dressing them with the chuck off so when he turned it on he would get a low spot in the middle of the chuck. Set up a tenths indicator and found when he turned the chuck on it would "suck" itself down to the table. Started dressing with the chuck on and the problem went away. Any of this make sense? Crazy I know but fact is strainger than fiction...
Just curious, has he removed the chuck and inspected and possibly reground the bed yet? I remember a few years back when I used to watch NYC-CNC, he was still figuring out his way in business and was still occasionally playing with manual (non-CNC) machines. He'd bought a decent size Okuma grinder, and wanted to get it nuts on accurate. He ended up pulling off the chuck (1st time in probably years that it'd been off, if ever) and there was a bunch of rust under it. He went thru the process of cleaning it up and grinding it flat, then hours of putzing with it to try and adjust most of the droop out of the end of the travel in both directions. He got it into a pretty accurate condition, but then ended up selling it not all that long afterwards apparently.

I would think injecting the fluid at an angle from an off axis location would be safer, nothing in the path of the wheel.
As an apprentice more years ago than I care to think about, we were always taught to start any surface or cylindrical grinder at least half an hour before actually grinding anything to allow the bearings and oil to warm up and stabilise
"half an hour"?? Nothing takes a "half an hour" to "warm up"!!
It was common practice when I served my apprenticeship in the 50's and 60's. On centreless grinders, it was even longer.

Ball valves are designed to provide the most flow, they do not throttle flow well. They are an full on, off valve. Try a needle valve

My gf would come out into the shop and just sit there and watch me and I didn’t really care for that. I usually go to the shop to be creative and relax so personally I’d rather not have someone just sitting there. I’d be like: do something.
think those plastic straws are going to become harder to find as they are bad for the aquatic life (they tend to end up in the nose of tourtusses for some reason ........maibe they sniff the white powder i dunno) , anyway you could use pieces of schrinktube instead just slide them on and warm them
Absolutely true! Drinking straws are now waxed paper or thin drawn stainless tube. Ear buds stc are no longer available with a plastic stem so you will likely have to look for an alternative in the future (unless like me, I got a stack of material in a secret store somewhere!!)

Sorry, but this video doesn't measure up to your usual standard of excellence. It looks crude and clunky, and detracts from the elegance of your grinder.
Well, I suppose he could have machined it out of a block of stainless, precision turned, drilled and reamed each individual tube again out of stainless, and had maybe spun silk tubes as a delivery method, each meticulously hand fitted to it. Taking $100's and 10's of hours, all for what? So it was made to your standards? T'was a relatively cheap, quick and dirty project to accomplish a specific task. Mission Accomplished
