That is typical of them chrome pans and timing covers with a 1 piece gasket .
I've heard that too. I took a little grinder and roughed up the surface of the oil pan sealing area. The rail and the front and back. No oil leak. Ohhh yeah. One piece gasket.
I did rough mine up a bit as well...
Dang it !!! Brad I'm rooting for you because you brought this car along way ,and that engine sounds great ,but it sucks when you pick up oil leaks !! Always had problems with chrome timing chain covers leaking. Went back to the original one. And always use RTV on timings cover top an bottom. And rear of oil pan.

Oil leaks are always a pita. Many are hard to trace and always show up after you have everything assembled. Hope the fix works for ya. The '55 is sounding really nice. Look forward to seeing the next one. Be safe and stay well.

Use some black tape on your wobble socket to help it from flopping around.
I am so old that I knew that, but then forgot it. Thanks for the reminder...
Pull the whole pan off and do it right. Black silicon the whole gasket on the pan side. Press it down with your hands and make sure the holes are lined up perfectly. Let it set up a few hours. Clean the block surface and timing cover completely. Make sure everything is DRY apply black silicone to the gasket block side. Let set 10/15 minutes and install on engine. Put on the 4 larger corner bolts and snug down. Then install all other bolts and snug all in a cross pattern. Then one final time tighten all bolts and let sit overnight. Always worked for me. You should re snug after first heat cycle and periodically after that.

I reused one of those thin chrome covers and it did the same thing. May not be your problem but it sure was mine! 😂 hop u get it fixed

Hope that fixes the leak. I had the same exact problem on my sbc. When I first put it together, I used a 1 piece gasket. My buddy had a run stand so we ran it on the run stand and it leaked. My buddy hated the 1 piece gasket so I put an old school cork in it and had no leaks. Fast forward 4 years, I pulled the engine and put a solid roller cam in it. I put it back together with a new moroso oil pan and a 1 piece gasket. It leaked exactly like yours. I pulled the engine, replaced the timing cover with a Milodon cover and old school cork and now it is sealed up well. I love the idea of the one piece but I have had zero luck with them. Mob on.....

If i remember correctly, after mine leaked , I ground off the chrome & used cork gasket & "The right stuff" sealant. Good every since. Live & learn

The chrome covers leaked in the 70s when we stopped using them. Nice to see some things never change ;)
Yeah probably should have changed put the cheap chrome...
The inner part of timing cover isn't properly attached to outer cover at spot welds the chrome covers just leak, see if you can find an aluminum one, Mr. Gasket, is my choice.

I tried using a gold anodized timing cover. Mistake! Bad oil leak anodiced timing cover was to thin and chincy. Went factory timing cover. Problem solved.

You have the wrong gasket. There are two styles. One is for early pans and are thin. The one you need is the thick style in the timing chain valley. Easy fix.

Better get a loud stereo to cover up the fuel pump noise. LOL. Bummer on the leak. My guess is the timing cover is too narrow for that gasket. 😢😢😢 crying in my beer for you and hoping I don't have the same problem since I used the same gasket.
Well hopefully by now you know there is a thick and thin gasket. I needed the thick one, hopefully you have the correct one and all is good. Yeah, that fuel pump is obnoxious.
Those chrome timing covers and oil pans always leak. I hope you dont have a chrome radiator hose neck on it. Most are all warped

Well heck! That's the pits. I've heard that if you connect a vacuum to the top of the engine that you can spray some kind of solvent on the area that is leaking so that the oil is removed then add RTV. Vacuum will supposedly be sucked into the area thats leaking. I've never tried it but I heard that. 🤔🤷

@MontanaGarage supposedly just a low vacuum external source. Hook up vacuum and spray the area with oil grease remover, let dry then apply sealant and turn off the vacuum source. At least that's what my buddy did. He said that it worked. 🤷

I feel like that light gauge chrome plated tin doesn't seal very well. Also, if the gasket doesn't have those little metal sleeves to keep from being crushed, tightening the bolts will only make it worse.
Yep, that's why I didn't want to tighten it too much. I think this one does have the steel though. Stay tuned to see how well the fix worked...
Don't goop it with silicone, you dd speed hack, get the correct gasket for that pan, if you notice when you buy the cork gasket set, it comes with 2 different size front seals
We all have a little hack in us I guess... I was just trying to sneak by with an easy fix, and you are right, it didn't work but I figured it as worth a shot. Fixed correctly in an upcoming episode, although I probably still hacked something just because...

You have the wrong gasket, there are 2 different small block chev timing covers, one of them the groove is deeper, you need a pan gasket for like a mid 80 chev.

I have your answer what Fel-Pro doesn't tell you i you use an aftermarket oil pan or timing cover you have to use the old style pan gasket as it is thicker and will not leak that's what I had to do for my 1957 chevy 283 after that it never leak a drop

If that's a Fel Pro, they provide recommended torque specs for the pan bolts. Did you follow those specs? The spec is surprisingly high.
Shocker I now, but I'm not good about following that stuff. Actually, I think the instructions ight have had torque specs in "inch pounds" ( I might be remembering that wrong) and I don't have a torque wrench for inch pounds so I went for tightish. Thanks for watching!
@@MontanaGarage I used to do the same thing. I was shocked at how tight Fel-Pro wanted the oil pan bolts. I feared they would snap, but using a very similar gasket and following their torque specs, no leaks.
