Dionysus is also a god of death, rebirth, insanity, fluidity, dolphins, the sea, ecstasy, pleasure, drunkenness, psychedelics, rebellion, catharsis, and freedom from societal inhibitions/restrictions. But these characteristics were a lot more a part of Dionysus’s old persona before Classical Greece.

it's important to understand that though dionysus/osiris was the god of parties, intoxication & pleasure, he was NOT encapsulated by these motifs. 🍇🍷
it was only after the romans invaded greece/egypt that the deity's demeanor, along with many other gods', became distorted & reinterpreted.
originally, dionysus/osiris represented the RIGHT amount of intoxication/pleasure which, when rightly TEMPERED, could ease the mind, soothe the soul & fuel inspiration. 🍇🍷
however, once adopted by the romans, the deity largely became rebranded under the title "bacchus".
"bacchus" is the root word of the term "debauchery", and entails hedonism & drunkenness.
the roman empire birthed much of today's legal traditions, which is quite telling because to a large extent it was a secular realm.
as an empire, its entire ethos was largely usurped from the people it subjugated.
it wasn't until constantine publicly converted to christianity that the empire, for the first time, had its OWN religion.
but even then, christianity & its customs were SO similar to its pre-roman counterparts that it wasn't ever uniquely original.
