@@gabrielschaffner9117most of the streams tell you if your account is European that they either dont ship or the shipping will be higher. The proff last time i was on whatnot did do international shipping, but it's quite expensive. The proff covered the shipping for contests even international.

It also tells you everything you need to know about reprints and reprint sets in general... what is the the point of a COLLECTIBLE card game if none of the cards are collectible anymore??????

@@cjared99 "Fairly priced reprints" - bro, it wouldn't be an issue if those would be fairly priced reprints. The issue is that 4 collector packs costs 180$. There are places in the world where people don't make that much money in a month. It's a joke. Same with precons which are overpriced like hell. I don't think anyone would have issue with those if they weren't treated as some kind of premium product. But they don't advertise it as such. It's a normal, insanely overpriced set. What's the reason for that except WotC greed? There is none. None at all.
@cjared99 right, the game pieces shouldn't be more than a dollar a piece. I don't care I'd the fancy hyper rare version of a card is 100 dollar as long as it's cheap for the poor man version.

I don't think he gets "shown" that as such, wouldn't make much sense. But maybe a reaction to his own video and his own guesses would be cool.

I mean he mentions these videos take a while to go through the editing and uploading process, so why not just wait until the pricing is added then record a clip of his reaction then just throw it in at the end before uploading? Given the way the format was explained I frankly just assumed that's what would happen.
A couple minutes segment at the end would work fine for this! And I would love to watch it.

@@animalchin5082 Like with every MTG set the value is concentrated in only a few cards. For this it's the Jeweled Lotus variants (and specifically the extended art textured foil one at $600+).
It just feels so much fucking worse with packs that are this stupidly expensive because most of the time you're losing $100+ when you buy this "booster box" insofar as you can call 4 boosters a box anyway.
I would love to see Prof's reaction to his guesses vs actual prices. It probably wouldn't make a great video by itself but as an addendum to another, maybe?

yeah. sometimes the whole buy singles thing is a little crazy still with some cards just being like... WAY too expensive regardless, but commander masters kinda helped massively tank some of the prices. I'm hoping for that same situation with the reprints in the new eldraine set.

I was at a nearby LGS when some dude walks in and buys a CMM Collector Booster box. I watched him begin opening his packs, and he pulls the freaking border-break Jeweled Lots! He wasn't NEARLY as excited as he should have been. I said, "That's literally the most expensive card in the set!" He was like, "Oh." and went to the next booster.
The kind of gambling addicts that casually stroll up and crack a "box" of collectors probably put thousands of dollars into boxes for hundreds worth of cards back. Sure, that lotus is like 600 dollars or something, but if you had to open 10 boxes to find one you're probably still in the red

Hi Prof! I'm from a little town called Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, here we have a game community and what you said about the prices is true, in my country a Collector Booster pack cost us 95 dolars each, so the closest we had them was watching this opening 😂. Every MtG products here costs double because taxes, and the latest prices of the sealed products (which are increasing a lot) are almost a dream for us.

@@kennygrenier4011no as time went on people have become softer and the majority of magic powers are extremely weak willed and although very nice and loving are just too weak to temptation and keep buying everything that comes out. For Christ sakes I remember seeing people opening boxes of core set some years ago.

I really enjoy this type of booster box game. Professor providing commentary while opening a box = chefs kiss. Would watch this also for older sets as well.

Wilds of Eldraine is definitely affecting the prices of Commander Masters. Every day they show off another enchantment that lowers the EV of the set, and why would players buy old Magic cards over exciting new cards.

Particularly when we're now so many years into commander being a thing, a massive number of people who want the "commander staples" have at least one copy. You know, one - the number of copies you need to play commander. This set feels at least two years too late to be charging this price.

To me a real commander masters is a not-draftable set, nearly unlimited print run, containing exclusivly playable cards. I'm not saying all expensive cards but playable cards across the price spectrum from a utopia sprawl to a mana crypt. I so desperately wanted Commander Masters to be a set that I could open a couple boxes to jumpstart my commander collection after years of not playing it.
I think this is what everyone was looking for in a premium priced reprint set.
I like the idea of high powered draft, but in the case of commander master it's the worst of both worlds. They should've made two different product, one for draft and one specially curated to just crack open and don't end up with chaff. I guess this is what set and collector boosters are supposed to be, but we all know you still get chaff in those.
Hopefully this isn't a bad omen for the upcoming remastered sets.

Same. It's marketed as a throwback, a set for new / returning players to get back into it. I started playing Magic in Brother's War for the first time and I can confidently say this product is squarely NOT for me. Too much money.
That commander draft box was fun. Other than that, Wizards screwed EDH with how hard they and how much they are printing cards aimed at EDH.

Not a single pack hit $45. Wow. I'm thankful I haven't bought any of this product. I remember getting Commander Legends boxes for $99 and being excited for the chance at hitting a Jeweled Lotus or Mana Drain
I opened one box of it, but i didn't pay for it. Instead I traded in a bunch of fetch lands from MH2 to my lgs for it so they could actually make some money on the deal, lol
I rolled the dice when the collector boosters got down to $174 and got $236+ worth of cards (only counted the ones worth $4 or more). Although I'm sure that will drop as LGS's open their boxes and sell the singles. Prof got really unlucky with his pulls.
@@jry0511 I would say the Prof got a bit unlucky true but mathematically your odds of getting the value of it are pretty slim. Of the 90 rare/mythic cards in the set, less than 20 have a value over $25. That means if you pull 12 rare/mythic cards across the box, you mathematically only have a 16% chance of getting at least 4 value cards...which may not even total up the value of the pack. Your chance of getting at least 5 plummets down to 10%.
Put another way? On average ~70% of these boxes don't even break even. Only around 10% actually do what yours did and go significantly above.
@@jry0511 based on what ive seen, he got what many others have gotten. someone at a shop i go to spent $400 somehow and they got sub $100 in value, prob more around $50, but seeing as they were mostly super cheap prints that wont sell easily or for much, basically $0.

Idea for the Shuffle up and play episode, There are 5 Omnaths ... there's 4 players in a commander game, everyone picks 1 to make a deck from?
So nobody will play the mono green Omnath as a Commander, but it will be in everyone's 99 for the funnies.

Honestly the greatest aspect of this commander "focused" set for the overall game were the downshifted cards that are now pauper legal. Can't wait for some busted tortex combo with Dread Return and Lotleth Giant to be discovered!
WotC needs to stay away from the side formats. They’ve already ruined every other format.

Designers in sets saying "oh, there's this cool card I made at common for pauper," or just downshifting cards in general, that's one thing; having a 'Pauper Masters' or something like that would be horrid for the format, don't get me wrong. I'm sure some WotC/Hasbro executive would find a way to say 'Well, we're reprinting Snuff Out and Expedition Map and Exhume and Lotus Petal, so the box prices will be $200 USD,' and then expect pauper players to pay those prices.
It must be frustrating to have technical difficulties, but I do always love the glimpses behind the curtain that show the care and integrity that go into this channel
I absolutely love that Prof worries so much about authenticity. To pushbthrough like that after the camera dies. I dont think a majority of us would have questioned him if he cut there but you've gotta respect the authenticity...keep it up prof!

@AlbertoDeDiego You do you, but this is probably the only game since Elden Ring (and Zelda if you are into that) I'd pay $70 for in the last couple of years. Granted I also got God of War at full price last year as well, but I was pretty excited for that one.

Prof, you have an immense reservoir of good will. I love your content and I value your opinion and trust the facts you present. This video made me ashamed to be playing Magic. The pricing of Commander Masters is... ridiculous. I bought singles, of course, but honestly this is killing me. I was so excited to buy and test out the Enchantress and Eldrazi precons, but the prices turned me off. I could spend 200 euro and get them both when they came out, but instead I brewed my own deck, added some staples to it, some cool art and ended up with my own 200 euro fully fledged commander deck! Ridiculous what happened here and the LGSs will suffer for it.

So glad your store could afford to drop the price! I wish I was in a position to do the same, but the allotment my store got ended up costing more than the rent for the space. We didn’t even know it was going to cost as much as it did until we had essentially already bought the product from Wizards. Now I have customers calling me greedy for not allowing discounts or lowering prices, when we just can’t afford to.

@@joshuaepstein5874 We’re looking at not ordering “premium” MTG products at all going forward, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes harder to find those products in local game stores.
@@sharktrap267 Exactly. We go off of what the last similar product cost, and compare it with any hype we see in our community for the upcoming product. So we were completely blindsided when a case of four commander decks cost us nearly $300 dollars. Similar for the collector booster boxes. They cost the stores over $200, so they are taking a hit by selling them at $180.
Eventually, you WILL be able to afford giving discount. Because there is no loss hurting as much as total loss.
The Professor has some big "It's one banana, Michael. What could it cost, 10 dollars?" energy on some of these price guesses, but boy am I right there with him. It's disturbing how worthless the cards we once treasured have become in favor of the new hotness of the post Horizons era. It feels a bit of like the canary in the coal mine. If it happened to the cards we valued 10 years ago, it's going to happen to the cards we value now in 5 more years... and that's if it even takes 5.
It's never been a wiser time to fully accept playing the game without investing money into it any longer. Any card with a sharpie taken to it can be any *other* card you want it to be. Don't waste the money you increasingly need to conserve for bills and food anymore. Just play the game for free, and buy only the singles and products that you intend to keep forever- because they'll have no inherent value in the future. After all, the "whales" seem content to support Wizards of the Coast financially ad infinitum. Doesn't seem like it'll hurt their bottom line in the least if the more enfranchised players like us that enjoy the game stop compensating the designers for their time and work in creating sets for this wonderful game. So why bother? It doesn't hurt them, it only hurts us when we keep paying for overpriced products with an expiration date attached to them. They should have to put "Warning: Perishable items. Good until Modern Horizons 5" on the back of their boosters.
Being able to have the same deck for years was how I convinced my girlfriend to play magic. That was when MH2 just dropped. She now believes I lied to her

I think the boxes are dropping is partly due to the fact that we just came from Lord of the Rings where a lot of people spent a lot of money chasing the 1/1 or just the Rings. This is the first set that I will probably not open any packs but strictly just do singles. I'll see how I feel when WoE comes out. I am already resigned to spending a lot on Dr Who, so I'm not buying too much between here and there.
One correction: Starfiled is 70USd for the standard edition and 90 for the Premium Edition. Prof's point still stands though.

The only thing that wizard can do after that is to do gimmicks like halo/surge foils etc, which is not working out, or power creep the game into oblivion to create new chase cards if all old cards are viewed as trash
Hey Prof, I'm from Germany and I'm really enjoying all of your videos. It's really great to see a big content creator that shows his passion for the game without loosing his integrity. I really like that you critisize the extreme pricing of products and that you put their real value into perspective.
Because in the end MTG could and should be a game for everyone.

I usually don’t comment on videos but I REALLY enjoyed this video, felt super natural and unscripted with the prof just telling stories. These videos are a lot of fun to have on in the background!
I think another problem with opening packs nowadays is that there are so many different arts of cards that the chances of you not pulling the art you want are relatively high as well, further disincentivizing opening packs

What they could’ve done for the premium decks, since they want to give out special lands, is reprint pain lands and the commander lands, and give a chance to give out the ORIGINAL dual lands like Badlands, because it’s insane that lands can cost up to 1k
Personally, When I saw that Wilds of Eldraine is to have all the reprints I wanted from Commander Masters, I decided to wait until then to buy the singles I wanted.

Did Professor ever do a video on draft booster packs increasing to $6.50 & set boosters going up to $8.50? Saw these prices for Lord of the Rings boosters.
Those prices is specifically for lord of the rings because of licensing (though I'd argue it's still overpriced). The standard legal sets still go for their normal price for each box, cheaper depending on your distributor and how few chase cards are in the set.
@@gigawarman12yeah I asked a friend about that and they basically gave me the same answer. I also think it's because it's technically a "modern" set, like Modern Masters.

One of the biggest mistakes they did is in my opinion are Collectors booster with way too much Junk inside , I forgot all the different Artworks for Cards.
He didn't have to do all that when the camera died, I would NEVER question The Professor's integrity

The best formula was when you could open masterpieces in standard packs. The alt arts felt truly special and valuable, it made opening draft packs exciting, and it adds value to sealed booster boxes over time which is healthy for a game that prints so much product year after year. Now that nothing has any value, all it's doing is killing the LGS and the enthusiasm of many enfranchised players.
23:12 I have a cool misprint smudge thing on my MH2 bone shards. The artwork is a guy sitting down with his arms raised as bones are raising from blood and bone, and becoming sharp objects that resemble bone knifes/shards. Now the printing error is like spotted smudge/roller artifacts(common mh2 misprinting) starting thickest in the middle of the art amongst the blood and bone and extends upwards to the top edge of card. Like if a house fly was smooshed and rolled over with the ink towards top of card. Really cool misprint adds more detailed art to the bone shards floating upwards. Wish I could put a picture here.

$50 a fricken pack? I stopped buying sealed product a few years back, and its mind blowing what boxes go for now. A pack used to mean losing like 3-5 bucks. Now it means losing hundreds.

love the prof commentary, idk if he would be up to it, but maybe seeing him get a reaction to the prices at the end would be pretty neat.
I have a bunch of people I know who are shocked when I don't know the price of every card I open. It's very reassuring that even the person who deals with this stuff for a living doesn't know the value immediately of every new card. Honestly, thank you for having the honesty and self confidence to post that.
I really liked that one, very entertaining! Also liked the free part inbetween. However, who would ever accuse you of something like faking booster openings? Honestly, I assume that can only be trolls (goblins, possibly).

I personally measure boxes by the Kayak. Your average small boat is $700.
This means that a box of commander masters set booster is about a "Half Kayak". Most boxes are sitting about a "Fifth Kayak" but are getting close to a "Fourth Kayak."
The 30th anniversary was very special at "One and a Half Kayaks."

The little technical difficulty but made it feel like I was back in class and the bulb blew out on the projector. A great little break segment regardless, way to go with the flow.
Edit: oh man. I just built up a nekuzhar commander and it's my favorite deck by far even though I have like 5 decks now. Probably made it a month ago and my lgs had the original print of $8. The value of that print hasn't changed, strangely. It's not even a foil.
