      I wouldn't be surprised if the movie's reputation and the general gist of what it's about was what these guys were judging on. Keep in mind it's pre-Internet days when audiences who couldn't handle horror movies would usually just avoid them and/or only know of them through trailers/movie reviews - they didn't have the benefit of the Internet to provide a summary and make their viewing experience easier.
      Doesn't justify what they were doing to poor Linda Blair though - she and many other child stars in Hollywood didn't deserve the crap and dysfunction they got alongside their fame. :(

    I've never understood why when people point to a film being cursed when people die during or after production for entirely unrelated reasons. Like... people die. That's a fundamental fact of life. Why does that have to be blamed on a specific production? Not to mention that if this had been any other genre of movie chances are nobody would have deemed it cursed as a result of the deaths, but because it's a horror movie - and a controversial one at that - then people jump to it somehow being the film's fault. So weird.

    • @mackenziewoloschuk7375
      @mackenziewoloschuk7375 Před 25 dny

      Probably because the production of a horror movie would be a possible hot spot for something paranormal, given how many of them are based around possessions and demons and the occult and such. So it makes some form of sense that some people would be paranoid and point to a death completely unrelated to the production as being from a curse. Even if the only thing connecting the death is that they're tied to one of the actors.
      If you want a real curse from a movie, there was this old flick that was supposed to come out, but they had no choice but to cancel it due to a very strange pattern happening, so strange that it stopped being a coincidence.
      The strange occurence? Every person they chose to play the main character would die before they even start shooting the scenes. Every. Single. Time. Whether it'd be heart problems, or something completely unrelated, the main lead would always die before they start production, leading to it being cancelled.
      I don't remember what it's called, but I'll look it up later and add the title once I find it. Honestly, kinda wanna see that flick be possibly covered here...
      Edit cuz I found the original video I found it from: The movie is called Atuk. Known actors that expressed interest in the lead role was Jon Belushi(idk how to spell his name, died in 1982 due to drug overdose), Sam Kinnesin(yeah, I don't think I'll be spelling any of these last names right, he died in car crash), John Candy(heart attack), and Chris Farley(also drug overdose).
      You're welcome

    • @elleofhearts8471
      @elleofhearts8471 Před 3 dny

      it is dumb to blame it all on a movie but there is something to be said for the fact that so many crazy events happened to/involving people tied to this production and there was a lot of pain, suffering, and sadism embedded into its production. That is very noticeable because...it's very unusual. But again, it is dumb to blame it on a fictional, highly curated and highly produced piece of entertainment. It's just people assigning meaning where there is none to fill in gaps of understand/find an answer to something they want to know.

    Great look at a very interesting production.
    There is one story from the production that rarely gets spoken of, I'd hoped that you might have covered it here but I suppose it wasn't "Hellish" enough.
    I found this out through my old boss who worked with Dick Smith, the man behind the make up of the possessed Reagan.
    During the early pre-production of the film, the studio wanted to skimp on costs and pushed for the "possession" make-up to be simple blue/green make-up on Linda. Friedkin hated this and (behind the execs backs) got Dick Smith to "indulge his creativity" on the make-up. Smith started with subtle palette changes (first darkening then giving Linda Blair a sickly blue/green hue far less cartoonish than the studio had in mind) before going into the sculpted stigmata and scarification's and later rotting/gangrene like wounds. During a "final presentation" to the studio brass, Smith would bring Blair in with each stage applied. Everything went ok until he bought her in for the final "full possession" presentation. The make-up presented was extreme, with blood running from open wounds and the skin peeling back in places to show exposed muscle beneath (Friedkin later admitted that he'd pushed Smith to go as far as possible in order to get the studio to understand what could be done and that this make-up was never intended for the final film, although something close was used). The execs freaked the hell out. They called for studio security to detain Smith and Friedkin and then called for the police. They were adimant that Smith had actually taken a razor blade to Blair and cut her face and arms. They detained Smith and Friedkin in an office while one exec proceeded to attempt to coach a confused and terrified Blair into saying Smith had assaulted her. When the police finally arrived the execs demanded Smith and Friedkin be arrested and "spoke on behalf" of Blair who was being told to stay quiet.
    In the end, Smith and Friedkin were given a chance to explain what happened as the execs were at this point being nothing more than angry Karen's yelling at the officers and even the now truly terrified Blair. Smith proceeded to remove sections of the make-up to show that it was just prosthetics and paint. The execs demanded Smith be fired from production but Friedkin stood by him and said "if he goes I go and if I go so does the rest of the production". Smith stayed, a legend cemented in film History....
    And the execs never went to set once during the later production period where Smith's make-up was on show in full.

    Yo what a fucking power move by Father Karis's actor. That's a "You got spunk, kid" story if I've ever seen one. Also just imagine you lose an iconic role to some Broadway actor outta left field. I feel bad for him

    I know many people don't feel this film as scary nowadays. But i honestly was scared when i saw it, it didn't have jump scares but still it had a sense of creepiness, uneasiness which was enhanced even more due to the score.
    I keep my eyes closed when watching horror movies which are not many, this i didn't need to do that but it felt so real like i was watching a documentary. Just my opinion as to what i felt with this movie

    The line “I am not kidding” is a reference to when Zoren (I seriously doubt I spelled his name correctly) was introduced for the first time when he spoke about a giant prehistoric shrimp in either Bixby, or New York. Yes I still remember that video, “Tremors” is my Mimi’s favorite horror movie and I love the kill count.

    Fun fact: I saw the film premiere in theater, and I believe we lost about 20-30 audience members all the way thru it, either bathroom vomiting sessions or fleeing from the theater. As an aside, on the way home from the theater, we were in the car on the freeway, when all of a sudden "Tubular Bells" came on the radio. We all looked at one another totally creeped out, but ALL of the freeway lights went out at that very moment. So there.

    Jack Nicholson as an actor is second to no one, but I cannot for the life of me imagine him as the gentle, mild-mannered, entirely serious Damien Karras. But then... we'll never know. Perhaps he would have played against what I consider his type. Also, Paul Newman is mentioned in dialogue in both the novel and film (by Damien Karras, no less) so it'd have been interesting to see how they'd have altered that if he'd been cast as Father Karras.

    Incredible video! I had heard about some of these things, but definitely not all of them. Looking forward to the day directors trust their actors to act instead of abusing them to get an "authentic reaction." Anyone can provide an authentic reaction of being in pain when you hurt them, why bother hiring professional actors at all then?
