Mary was by all accounts a lovely person, but I'll share a brief encounter with you. I had recently fell in love with Stereolab, and, having also recently turned 18 , and having had no one to coinvince to go to the gig, found myself on my own in December 94 at a Lab gig at the Limelight in Belfast. Laika were playing support and were fantastic, but Stereolab were off the scale, the best band I'd see at tat venue to date (Oasis, the Inspirals and Primal Scream not providng much competition). They came off stage and I remember getting Laetitia's autograph which I thought wou;ld be a highlight. I was getting my last pint of snakebite in before shutdown when I realised I was standing beside Mary at the end of the bar. After the double take I started talking to her and even though I was quite drunk I will always remember how utterly lovely and sweet natured she was to me, she didn't have to be so kind to some off his face teenager, but she was. I spewed some nonsense about how much I loved her band and asked her about her life in Australia, and how big Mount Isa was (only thing I could remember about Queensland) and she talked to me for a good 4 or 5 mins about her life in Queensland as a child and how it's much bigger there and her life with Stereolab, and then we parted ways, but not before she signed my ticket "Cale, Pyjamas, Mary" - maybe an indication from her that I'd had too much to drink and needed my bed! She's hugely missed by so so many of us fans, I just wish she knew how much we all love her, in all honesty.
If you have a story about meeting her, please share so we can remember that she wasn't only a talented vocalist and musician but also a really sweet human being. I met her in 1999 -- she was really gracious despite the fact that I was more than a little tongue-tied. She touched a lot of people like that.

Mary was the spark, the bubble on the soda. I miss her.
I remember hearing the news, it was like being told a friend had died. You touched countless hearts Mary.

Thx for this. She is on my mind decades after I got to see her with Stereolab at Irving Plaza. (Putting velcro on my bike helmet now)
