How Weight Cutting RUINS the UFC | Biggest UFC Problem

  • Weight cutting is a problem in the UFC.
This past year was not the best reflection of the UFC’s weight system.
Charles Oliveira became the first UFC champion to lose his belt at the scale, We reshuffled the UFC 279 card because Khamzat Chimaev was unable to make weight, and we had quite the scare with Alex Pereira making weight opposite Israel Adesanya.
And there have been plenty of weight controversies in the past.
But at the root of the problem, is the fact that fighters feel obligated to cut 20, 30, 40 pounds, or more to gain an advantage in a weight class.
Oftentimes, the fighters dehydrate themselves to make weight, which, not only makes them look very ill, but it negatively affects their brain function and could be even more hazardous by affecting their performance during their fight.
One Championship in Asia has deterred fighters from cutting weight, by implementing hydration tests, which force you to compete at your natural weight.
This counteracts weight bullying and enhances fighter health, and while it’s not a perfect system, it is a step in the right direction.
But implementing a system like this would completely shake up the UFC’s weight classes and championship holders, which is unfortunate because

In wrestling we had to get certified at our weight class. so then they will weigh in at roughly their natural weights because there's no way they will cut weight 30 minutes before a fight and fight drained and dehydrated. So it will be impossible for them to weigh in at the same weights, which means that one fighter will have an advantage over another. At least with weight cutting both Fighters weighed the same the day before. Your solution is just making the problem worse. The best solution is to take the big weight cutters and force them to move up a weight class. It's that simple. The only other solution is to have a weight class for every 5 lb which will be ridiculous. Basically everybody on the roster will have a championship belt. in the end, you will always have one fighter that has some weight advantage over his opponent in just about every fight. Like I said there's no way around that other than to have a weight class for every 5 lbs. People come in different sizes and weights that's just the way it is. If there were to be more weight classes all you would see is the same three or four people constantly fighting each other which is boring as hell.

As a wrestler hydration testing was very helpful for limiting the most extreme weight cutting. Though a good amount was still allowed even with that. Another thing I think should be changed to help with weight bullying is having same day weigh ins like wrestling does. That way the people cutting a ton of weight have much less time to put the weight back on, and they’re going to be way more likely to fatigue because they haven’t recovered from the cut as much. This creates a good equalizer to make up for the size difference.

The olivera situation was and still is arguably a faulty scale. The guy weighing people in was making the process look horrible (he was banging the weights back and forth, and was calling weights for some fighters before the scales stopped). Olivera never had issues at 155 before, all his weight misses were at 145 before this. It's probably the worst example because the UFC added security at the scales after this event. It kind of nodded to the idea that they knew the scales were fucked. To give an idea, I believe 21 fighters all weighed .5 over championship level weight, one of those was Tony Ferguson (bro barely ever weighed in over 155).

I've personally never been a fan of huge weight cuts. With wrestling or fighting I always preferred to stay pretty close to my walk around weight. I always felt so much better only dropping a few lbs than trying to cut like 20. I mean they even have hydration tests for high school wrestlers so its kinda nuts to not have them at the apex of combat sports. Also if you're losing because of 10 lbs you were probably going to lose anyway... its obviously not always the case it can definitely sometimes matter but I mean look at light HW and HW they are two divisions where people actually fight inside the weight range rather than barley making it by a lb and looking like a corpse... Idk fighters just always look and seem to perform their best at their correct weight it would be really interesting to see how the weight classes would be shaken up if it was implemented.

the solution would be to get every fighter on the UFC roster's weight once every 2 weeks. the average weight over the previous 12 weeks will determine the current eligible weight class. this way theres no way the fighter can cheat the system with dieting or cutting because the weigh ins are too frequent and consistent. there will still be a weight cut before fights to ensure fair competition for both fighters, but the eligible weight class will ensure that fighters cant cut 20 or 30 pounds leading up to his fight.
example: if a fighter's 12 week average weight is 185 then he cannot fight at 170, and has to fight middleweight. if its 184 then he can cut to 170 for a contracted fight.
now of course some fighters will watch their weight consistently to stay in their desired weight class, but this rule will make monster weight cutting a thing of the past. there will only be moderate - light cuts, because the 12 week rule makes all the monster cutting impossible

Have the fighters weigh in before the walk out. If we can expect them to be just precisely dehydrated to death's door to be a certain weight a day before the fight, we can expect them to be whatever their ideal fighting weight is when it's time to fight. Move all the classes up, everyone generally ends up fighting the same opponents (LHW and HW may get a little squirrelly though hopefully it finally leads to new weight classes), and fighters can perform better, be more active, have longer careers, and have better health in retirement. Otherwise just accept that weight cutting will always be a thing and quit whining about it.

Issue is the weight cutting hydration testing can be avoided and pretty easily at that. And it's extremely unhealthy to do so, but fighters will because it gives them a massive edge. There are some great videos with in depth research on this on youtube.
It's very difficult to stop and there's no system that works right now.
