    Ive been in this hobby since the 1990's and probably had 25-30 subs throughout that time including building a few of my own. This PSA EV1813-M is my favorite and overall best performing. I recently had 4 sealed subs in my living room, but even those could not match the output, quality or impact that this single 18" can do. I had also tried 3 RSL subs, one 12s and two 10s calibrated with my Denon 3800. Even those lacked the midbass punch of the PSA and could not energize the room the way the PSA. Ill eventually add a 2nd for symmetry and even out the seat to seat room response but not for a lack of output.

      Woow! This sub seems to behave like a bass monster! Could you please tell me about this speaker sensitivity? Do you need turn this sub too much up on back knob, to reach the level of satisfying bass you like? And what about the volume on receiver?

      @@demonreturns4336 I love them. No regrets. Great for music and movies alike. Although I found their limits on accident with high volume use. I wish they had a built-in limiter. Set on eq-2, which is full low frequency extension, they can be maxed out in the low frequencies if you're not careful, which was expressed on the Audioholics review of the uls-15. If you have a heavy bass addiction and a large room, I'd maybe opt for the svs sb16 ultra's if more output is needed. Or just get multiple uls-15's. But for most people I think they will be great as is. If you need more specifics, just let me know.

    Hi Matt: Excellent review ... always be critical and lets see more tests!
    And Props to you for specifying 75db. That's pretty darned loud but should not be enough to cause permanent hearing loss, which begins about 80 to 85 dba.
    I had to laugh at the video of the car window getting ready to explode. Whenever this comes up I'm always reminded of a service call I got a few years ago.
    "My system is losing bass more and more all the time."
    So I get to his house and everything is vibrating like it's in an earthquake.
    "My friend, your system isn't losing bass ... you're losing your hearing".
    So I showed him how to balance a sub-woofer with his audio system and went on my way.

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1  Před 8 měsíci

      The alarming thing is the customer you assisted with their sub tuning likely thought the proper balance was worse. I mean I can appreciate a little bump in the lower frequencies especially for home theater but to the point of hearing loss is another story all together.

    • @Douglas_Blake_579
      @Douglas_Blake_579 Před 8 měsíci

      @@MattCoykendall1
      Given his obvious hearing loss, I'm sure he thought it was worse. I like a little extra kick for special effects in movies too... like +3db on the EQ or a little twist of the tone controls... but that was absurd and he was doing it to his kids and wife too.
      I've personally never felt the need for a discrete sub-woofer. My game is to tweak my towers so they do it for me.

    • @justinbeamon6624
      @justinbeamon6624 Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@Douglas_Blake_579 It takes exponentially more DB level to damage your hearing the lower the frequency. 85 DB isn't even close to damage at like 40hz for example. Someone can be blasting 20hz at 150 db and it's not causing any damage. But yah all the other frequencies definitely don't go above 85 long term.

    • @Douglas_Blake_579
      @Douglas_Blake_579 Před 5 měsíci

      @@justinbeamon6624
      The lowest frequencies cause the most movement of the ear drum ... and are in fact far more likely to be harmful.
      As I pointed out, above ... In the last couple of years before my retirement, sub-woofers were becoming more popular. I sometimes got service calls from people complaining "My system is losing bass". When I would get there, the whole darned house would be shaking because the sub-woofer was turned all the way up. Their systems weren't losing bass ... they were losing their hearing.
      Check the industrial noise standards in just about any country and you will see.

    Good review. I can contest that a sub really opens up your main speakers. I don't own a sub yet but I demoed some speakers with and without a sub and the sub really opened up the imaging of the tower speakers to the point of vanishing. It was really cool.
    Hey, do you still like and have your KLH Model 5? I loved them too and almost got them but the Sonus Faber Lumina 5 stole my heart a little more. KLH is supposed to come out with the Model 7, they announced that when I was demoing the Model 5 and that was part of the reason I went with the Sonus Faber. I can't wait for the Model 7 to come out and I like to compare it against the Klipsch Forte IV and the Sonus Faber Sonetto Vlll.
    PS: any idea how to get sound stage depth? I heard setting up the speakers along the short wall with a good 3 ft space between it and the front wall does the job, fact or fiction?
    Thanks

      Hey! I do still have the Model 5, I still think its a fantastic speaker. I am excited for the 7 as well and have reached out to them to see if I will be able to get in a review sample, we will see... As for the soundstage your spot on discussing the placement, thats 90% of the battle, pulling them out does help at the expense of low end extension so you need to find that healthy balance. I would suggest checking out the channel New Record Day, he has a lot of good speaker set up video's.

What recording gear, (camera, lights, recording monitors, etc) do you use and/or recommend? Do I begin by purchasing my own speakers, amps, etc and review them then seek out sponsors? How do I get companies to send me gear to review, is this a result of getting my channel out there and they will contact me or do I contact companies and ask them if I can review their gear? Thanks
