How Russia is taking control of the Arctic | It's Complicated

  • Controlling the Arctic has long been an ambition of Soviet and Russian leaders.

    And it's not hard to see why: the Arctic contains vast deposits of untapped fossil fuels, it is of huge strategic importance militarily and represents an emerging trade route between Asia and the west to rival the Suez canal. But Russia is not the only country with designs on the Arctic. Canada and Denmark have also staked a claim and, in military terms, Nato is bearing down on all sides. Yet Vladimir Putin is closer than any of his predecessors to gaining control of the polar region. Josh Toussaint-Strauss explores how Russia is trying to entrench its claim to the Arctic.

    • @nizzebroid
      @nizzebroid Před 4 měsíci +42

      The real problem for the West is not the Arctic itself, but the aggregation of trade routes within Eurasia (and further Africa), as an expanded Silk Road to be controlled now by the Chinese and Russians. Britain in particular used to receive huge profits from the control of maritime transportation, and soon a decent slice of it will be cut off from their interest. So nothing complicated - and the talks about climate change and resources in the Arctic are just a smoke screen, I believe.

      @@guzelataroach4450 it's not just India that's facing the Indian Ocean you know.... Are you aware that the ICJ has demanded for the US and UK to leave and return Diego Garcia and the British Indian Ocean Territories to the Mauritius but the US and UK conveniently ignores the ruling? Or the presence of British, French and Dutch islands miles off the coast of independent states in the Carribean? How about France having the most amount of time zones, even larger than Russia because they have territories thousands of miles away from their country in the Pacific? Russia's claim to the Arctic is not that extreme. Russia has numerous archipelagic and island chains there. And if we go by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS), all states have the rights to claim the seabed and waters of a certain region if that specific region is part of that country's continental shelf. This means that there are provisions where Russia could pursue it's claims even through legal methods and not just physical explorations. Of course, in that case Canada and Denmark can claim the same territory as part of their Continental shelf, hence it could be solved by an arbitrary seating of the UNCLOS. Russia is an active member of UNCLOS as in the past, they have sought to expand their EEZ in the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East and they successfully persuaded the UNCLOS body to grant Russia authority over a body of water called "The Peanut Hole". Hence, there is really nothing too far fetched about Russia's claim and Russia has not shied away from using international maritime laws to press for it's claims.

      No. Russia already owes too much money to China
      and there's the matter of a vast chunk of territory in Asia
      which China says Russia stole in the 1800s and wants back.
      So I don't think that China would be in any mood
      to give or sell any territory to Russia.
