What Happens When Gas Runs Out

  • The 1973 gas crisis didn’t just mean prices at the pump spiked. It meant a sea change in how Americans thought about their relationship with cars, and how U.S. auto manufacturers designed them. Luxury and V-8 dominance had been the signifiers of car culture for a generation, but suddenly, fuel-sipping economy and the nimble joys of compact imports had changed the game. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the old dogs of Detroit didn’t exactly knock their first experiments in competing out of the gate.

    During the 1973 gas crisis, I was and worked at a gas station. Unlike most of the gas stations in the area, we had gas. We were receiving 9000 gallons per day and had a line 1/4 long. My best friend was shift manager. He designated one island for fleet vehicles and took kick-backs from the fleet owners. I worked the island and got a dollar of 2 tip from every driver. For a brief period I was making more money than my father.

There’s barely any competition in that sector and nothing from the Americans. I think they’d sell well enough. It’s probably because it costs less to make. It’s why the British flogged to diesel. Then the government realised they were losing out on tax money and taxed the shit out of it making it more expensive than petrol. We should all try to be more efficient drivers in times like these to keep prices in check collectively. Chill out, keep your speed up, keep your revs down, time lights and just avoid braking as much as you can. I guarantee you can alter your driving and see huge improvements in your fuel bill regardless of what you drive. Find your vehicle's highway rated fuel economy and aim to beat it on every drive. That is your mission should you choose to accept it...

    I remember one of my teachers telling me about biodiesel and how easy it was to make.
    They would go to restaurants and pick up the used oil (that the restaurant would have to pay to throw away). They would strain it out with cheesecloth.
    Pouring it directly into their diesel cars, he also said something about if it was in colder climate they would have like a warmer box or something like that.
    Note: if anyone could add clarity to this story, tell me if my teacher was exaggerating, or any other additional information would be great.

    • @BayAreaRushHour
      @BayAreaRushHour Před 2 lety +15

      He is right you can just get strained cooking oil and put it in a diesel car. While it is possible, you can’t just throw it in along with diesel, most people dedicated to the biofuel usually have a second tank specifically for the used cooking oil, and can switch from the diesel tank to the cooking oil tank on the fly

      @C-M-E Před 2 lety +14

      Not quite as straightforward as just filtering it and throwing it in a tub, as to get it to run reliably in most commercial engines, you need to add a bit of methanol. I'm sure if I looked for it, I recall having a book somewhere in my alt fuels research days about the exact percentage, but my brain tells me about 5% to every 50 gallons. Wood fuel is another one that's like the fryer oil equivalent for gas engines. Doesn't seem like it would work, but it's an alternative.

    • @chadcoady9025
      @chadcoady9025 Před 2 lety +9

      Slight exaggeration. You need to filter with more than just a cheesecloth. Otherwise, you'll be clogging up fuel filters every 2 months. I did this with a buddy of mine. We worked a fuel supply systems company, so we had access to good filtration devices, used an old water heater and dual filters to pre-filter the veggie oil we got from a donut factory and a restaurant. A gallon of vegetable oil is about $8 and is always higher than the price of diesel, so now most restaurants sell their used oil to companies that buy it and come pick it up for free. Yes, in colder climate, you need to add ethanol (Heet) to the used oil and also need a tank warmer because the oil coagulates thicker and faster than diesel. The older diesels worked better with this but still had a lot of problems with cloggin if not twice or thrice filtered.

    I just remembered that there was that gas shortage in Texas (might have just been the dallas area) in 2017. Most stations were out of gas, jerry cans were out of stock everywhere, and the stations that did have gas had long enough lines to cause traffic jams. Like the tp crisis of 2020, it was caused by everyone bulk buying jerry cans so they could super-bulk buy gasoline. After it was over, my Home Depot received 6 fully loaded pallets of Jerry cans that are probably still collecting dust in the overhead.
