  • Are we getting ripped off by John Deere? Some time ago, I noticed that my John Deere suitcase weights were stamped 20kg/40lb. Well, I don't remember much from school, but I do recall that one kilogram wasn't exactly equal to two pounds. The most commonly accepted ratio is 1 kg = 2.2 lbs. However, I'm going to use a slightly more accurate version of 1 kg = 2.205 lbs.
So, 20 kg is equal to 44.1 lbs.
And, 40 lb is equal to 18.14 kg.
The weight test results are below and the main thing to keep in mind is that this is just for fun! This is not a certified scale, I have no controls in place, I simply grabbed the weights and weighed! I found the results interesting and I hope you do too!
John Deere 20KG/40 LB Suitcase Weight Results
    Average: 18.96 kilograms/41.8 pounds
    High: 19.23 kilograms/42.4 pounds
    Low: 18.59 kilograms/41.0 pounds
NOTES: 15 weights weighed. Mixture of two different style logoed John Deere weights and an aftermarket version without logo. All labeled 20kg/40lb.
John Deere 32KG/70 LB Suitcase Weight Results
    Average: 32.29 kilograms/71.2 pounds
    High: 32.38 kilograms/71.4 pounds
    Low: 32.20 kilograms/71.0 pounds
NOTES: 3 weights weighed. All generic, no label and marked 32KG.
John Deere 50KG/110 LB Wheel Weight Results
    Average: 46.39 kilograms/102.3 pounds
    High: 46.44 kilograms/102.4 pounds
    Low: 46.35 kilograms/102.2 pounds
NOTES: 2 weights weighed. Both John Deere weights purchased from John Deere dealer. Included hardware (BM11939) mentions that it's for 110 lb wheel weights. Weight not identified on weights.

John Deere Ripping people off, is why I left them. $20 for a 2" x 1/2 grade 8 bolt, $1000 for a radiator on a 4100 HST, $3500 for a kit just to kit one part that listed for $119... $500 for a rear PTO shaft that doesn't meet the OEM specs so you have to ship it off to be reground by a machinist. Yep.. Yanmar and RK for me!

Your test results shows that the weights for the back or front of the tractors are correct where the ones for the wheels are off quite a bit and the consumer is cheated when buying them. I have the weights on the front of my 790 John Deere tractor since I use the bush hog attached to it and I needed the extra weight to hold it down. I didn't put wheel weights on either tractor though, but don't need them on my other tractor since I have a front loader on it.

Do you feel the wheel weights are worth the money? When I was raking my yard, I would go over large mole hills and the tractor feels tippy. Obvously with the rake I don’t have my ballast box attached. I have been wondering if the wheel weights would help. The JD dealer talked me out of the wheel ballast, as they said the chemical is very corrosive and is messy if the tire needs to be repaired.

Interestingly enough, I just went out and checked them, mine are cast with 19 kg (42 lb).
The conversion of 19 kg into pounds is 41.8878 lbs., which is extremely close to the average weight of your sampling of the 15 small weights that you have weighed.
It looks like somebody in charge of sourcing finally figured out how to convert kilograms to pounds, and had the markings changed.

Rounding off . . . 20 kg = 44 lbs. And 18 kg = 40 lbs. So by aiming for a plus or minus 42 lb they are just splitting the difference. Lesson to be learned is that with rough castings of big heavy blocks of steel that are not machined or milled for precision in any way, there will ALWAYS be variance in final weights.

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  Před 3 lety +1

I assure you John Deere had not survived and thrived as one of the biggest and oldest company's in the world by cheating and ripping customers off on weights. Honestly, anything JD is the only products I've felt that you actually get what you pay for.

Maybe it’s too politically correct but- the term “gypped” is an ethnic slur that refers to the ethnic group commonly referred to as Gypsies. By using this term to mean cheated, you disparage a whole group of people. I won’t name them, but other ethnic group names have been used to define negative traits. It is insensitive and you seem to be an intelligent well meaning guy so why use this expression?

First I've heard that and you're right. I had no idea it was a derogatory term. I wasn't using the term to intentionally disparage a group of people. It is defined as being cheated or swindled not as a derogatory term describing a group of people.

No worries, being a child of the 60s myself, we used that term regularly. Only when it was brought to my attention did I actually make the connection. Before that, I never thought twice about using the term. Peace.
