Ever wondered what that tractor abbreviation stood for or if others refer to an attachment the same way you do? Tractor terms can be confusing. Sometimes these terms can be interchanged as they have a common understanding, but other times you may be referring to something completely different. Like Tim (and a lot of I've been around over the years), I'm using grease when I'm Greezing my equipment. Maybe it's a thing from the farming communities, I've always lived in one and that's how it's been commonly spoken for all of my 60+ years of existence.
Of course, don't get me going on spider webs vs cobwebs... :)

I really enjoyed this video because you've resolved a couple of terms (like SCV) I haven't been able to figure out. There was one item that surprised me though. You were talking about snow blower vs. snow thrower and mentioned single stage blowers have just the auger and no impeller. I haven't seen one of those. Both my dad and my father-in-law had Sears walk-behind snow throwers that were nearly identical, but dad's had a hood over the engine. Both had only the impeller with no worm drive and steel wheels with no tires. Both did a pretty fair job most of the time, but had great difficulty with heavy, wet snow. They both lived in SE Wisconsin, where they get quite a few wet, heavy snowfalls each year. Unfortunately, on the first day of spring in 1983, they got 7" of the stuff. Dad was in his 70's and had several health issues, but cranked up the snow thrower and cleared his sidewalks and those of the neighbors. He put it back in the garage and was heating water for the bird bath, when my mom found him on the floor. He'd had a massive heart attack and died. I moved to Louisiana >50-years ago to avoid that, but we're having a week (2/2021) of cold and snow worse than I've seen here since '85. I'm planning to buy a 1025R soon, but don't plan to buy much snow removal equipment unless this becomes a regular feature. -- I certainly hope not!

always great to see your helper rosie. cute she brought her friend to help lol. i agree. implement is ground engaging [tillers, mowers, blowers, non-powered equipment - blades, rakes] attachment is something attaching to the tractor like front loader arms, even quick attach system. PTO is an abbreviation as you explain. you were showing the front and rear SHAFT of PTO. someone told me its like saying a tractor has x horsepower - then looking at the engine. if that makes sense. great video.

HAHA! I lost it when you revealed the "bone to pick" with TTWT. I call it "greazing" too. Even as I type the word spellcheck is telling me it's wrong. I know it's spelled "greasing", but phonetically, I say greazing too. I'm from southern Ohio so maybe it's regional thing. Anyway, love the videos, keep them coming. A couple of possibilities could be the different types of transmissions, or quick hitches. Especially the fact that there is NOT a common standard for Category 1 hitches.
Oh, l love the clock! Takes me back to my youth growing up on a golf course. When the growing season hit in the spring, the 2 workers couldn't keep up, so mom ran the pro shop, & dad & I jumped on the tractors & sometimes mowed late into the night. He liked the 801 Ford, & I was in love with the brand new 1020 John Deere we had just received. It had less than an hour on the clock, & it smelled like a new car.... This was in the early 60's, & not exactly what a teenager like me wanted to be doing, but for some strange reason it stuck, & I've had a real fondness for AG equipment, tractors & the like ever since......
Front PTO = on my Ventrac 4500z, 32.5hp, gas Kubota engine. Most of the 30+ attachments run on the front...I also have a rear PTO and 3-pt hitch. Ventrac are not for cultivation, so has low ground clearance comparatively...but it is used for everything else a tractor is used for around any property. I love mine.
Great clarification! There could be a part 2 to that video! Third function valve versus Diverter valve to actuate an implement on the FEL with SSQA or a Pin On Style implement... Is this a 3pt Quick Hitch or Quich Attach for the rear implement... like a 3 pt hitch receiver. Or maybe a rear blade or grader blade? And so on! Thanks for sharing!

I have two John Deere tractors and love them and how they work for me. I have many implements which can be attached to the tractor and use the quick hitches to attach my implements to the tractor much easier. I learned about the terminology when I purchased my first tractor and since getting my newer tractor I had to learn new terminology and it helped me.
Just realized I usually call my tractor brush cutter simply a “brusher”. Great videos!!

Good video explaining terms used on tractors . The most important thing that I have experienced on tractors is when buying a new tractor or purchasing used one is get it with the power beyond hydraulics at back . You can then add any open center hydraulic control in the future very easy or when wanting too add a backhoe or other hydraulic controlled attachments . 👍

I’m looking at buying my first subcompact tractor due to finally having a need for one and a lot of the terminology you just explained are common to those who grew up on a farm but were foreign to me. You saved me from sounding as stupid to a dealer and letting him/her know they have a mark on the hook when I go to purchase.

implements either needs hydraulic or PTO connection to operate as intended. Attachment is equipment connected to the tractor but does not need the auxiliary power of the hydraulics or PTO. Ex: Grader box = attachment; post hole digger = Implement.

I put myself through school in the 1970s working for a farmer in Oregon. The farm had a “rotary mower” but we called it a gyramower (don’t know if this is spelled right). I guess it was called that because of the gyroscopic aspect of the mower. Great channel. I’m learning a lot from it.

Always learn something from your videos. I was raised on a farm, but left for a career in law enforcement . Retired now and its a whole new experience with tractors. ( I have the 1025R ) . You mentioned the very tractor savvy Tim and your beef with an incongruity that he makes. I also have one with Tim. He mentions metric and " English " measurements ? It should be; metric and imperial . English is the language , Imperial is the measurement . Small thing in the scope of everything but lets keep the tractor knowledge imparting correctly.

I would call it greasing too. I think Mike on Outdorrs with the Morgans calls it greazing too.

Third Function, Diverter valve, and Third SCV.... I think of Third Function as an activity rather than an actual hydraulic port. A Third SCV is an actual Hydraulic port, not just an activity. My tractor has a Diverter valve mounted on the vertical loader arm with a switch on the loader "JoyStick" for controlling a grapple on the FEL. This, in my mind, is how I get the Third Function to operate the grapple "lid". The diverter "diverts" some of the hydraulic fluid going to the normal FEL operation to use for the grapple lid operation. My tractor also has 2 additional SCVs on the rear of the tractor. I had a discussion with my dealer about using one of them to control the grapple (rather than buying a diverter), but he thought the levers were too far from the joystick for that purpose (not to mention the additional cost of the hydraulic coupling and hoses).
Yes, it can get very confusing. There's a lot of ways to set it all up too.

How about an explanation of different front end loader (FEL) configurations like: Non Self Leveling (NSL, your typical FEL); Mechanical Self Leveling (MSL); Hydraulic Self Leveling.
I’ve owned a John Deere 4720 CUT with the 400cx MSL FEL that was absolutely fantastic! It is such a pleasure to use a MSL equipped FEL when lifting, or lowering, anything (bucket full of whatever, pallet fork, bale spear, etc) from ground level to full height, or back down, by just activating the boom lift cylinder circuit. No need to do the "herky-jerky" movement of controlling both the boom and bucket cylinders at the same time (or sequentially) to maintain control of the FEL’s load. If you’ve never used a MSL equipped FEL, you just don’t know what you’re missing!
Also, due to some kind of mechanical advantage I don’t fully understand, you’ll find that MSL FELs have higher "real world" 500mm ahead of the pivot pin capacities. However, the same FEL model without the MSL option will spec out with a higher, but less reflective of the real world, "at the lift pins" specification.
In the CUT world, John Deere is one of the few manufactures the offers the MSL option, and then only on their deluxe 4-series FEL. Kubota recently added an MSL option on one of their small/mid-size CUT FELs. Kubota does, however, offer a hydraulic "Spill Guard" option (a form of HSL) on their larger Grand L series FELs. I’m reasonably sure this setup hydraulically levels the FEL load on the way up, but I do not know if it also levels the load on the way down.

I did want to add one caveat about an MSL FEL. I have seen postings (on a 400cx) where the person was complaining about a "design flaw" of the MSL linkage that prevented him from lowering the bucket all the way back to the ground after dumping the bucket at full height, but leaving it fully dumped. This is not a design flaw. It is, in reality, "pilot error".
If the bucket is fully dumped at full height, it is already pushing against its dump limiting stops. As you lower the boom, the MSL linkage is going to attempt to, in effect, dump the bucket more. Since the bucket can't dump any more, the boom cylinders will eventually bind up because the MSL linkage is pushing against the cylinder's upper mounting points, but the bucket is now mechanically limited in its movement. This bind up will not cause any damage because the boom cylinders will enter bypass mode and stop trying to force the boom arms down.
The solution to this perceived "flaw" is to roll the bucket back up using the joystick's bucket dump/rollback function. This will free the bucket from its dump limiters, and now the boom cylinders can continue to lower the bucket to the ground.
If you closely watch the MSL portion of your video, and in particular concentrate on watching the top end of the bucket cylinders, you can see just how the MSL hardware is doing its job. Kudos to you for rolling the bucket back and full height before attempting to lower the FEL booms. You passed the Pilot's test!

That's a cool clock . Didn't know that you can get 15 watt bulbs . Question ... what about a flail mower with hammer blades . Could you use that instead of a brush hog ? Another question .... can you get a John Deer tractor with SSQA instead of the JDQA or do you have to do some kind of change over . I see you showed one . Hi Henry, yes, a flail can be used in place of a brush hog in many circumstances. There's some differences between a brush hog and flail though. Regarding SSQA on a John Deere...my 4066r (shown in the video) was ordered with SSQA from the factory. So, yes, that is an option. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Good question. I don't think so as you don't ever see a subframe sold unless it's with a backhoe. Then again, I've been wrong before! :)

Have you gone over the three lift systems on the 1025R that are offered for the mid PTO? TTWT has a description and my dealer only has mechanical - my current tractor is hydraulic... can you help me out what are the drawbacks of going hydraulic again besides the cost?
I haven't, but the downside is you can't raise and lower the deck while the loader is hooked up. At least with the standard version of the independent hydraulic deck lift.
This is were I get confused- I know you can add multiple SCV valves and I saw that John Deere has an independent 3rd SCV I was wondering if it could be used for this. I just really can’t seem to find anyone knowledgeable enough or wants to even install them correctly if I ordered the tractor that way

There is no Z in diesel either but most people have a deezel truck.
Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, was German. In the German language, the "S" is usually pronounced with what in English is a "Z" sound. So "deezel" is actually the correct pronunciation, unlike "greezing" your tractor (which seems to be a bit of a Southernism).

Got a question 4-U. Talking with an old timer in America's Store Harbor Freight about GreaZe😂. He says people get it wrong. When you use the gun, just pump one or at most two times. You don't want to pump until you see it coming from the boot. If you see that you are doing damage. Second for years, I have been using a L120 and because of you I just purchased a 1025r, waiting for delivery. With a snowblower on front, do I need rimguard Or chains on the back? Did I make a mistake not getting the back hoe. Like the show.

Yes Thank you! GREASE! NOT GREAZE. But I guess it's all in where you are from. If you could touch on Front wheel assist vs 4 wheel drive, is it the same thing? In my mind any axle that is not mechanically connected such as a hydraulic driven axle is an assist axle where if the traction is to great for the hydraulics the tires may stop turning. Any axle that is mechanically gear driven is a drive axle as in 4 wheel drive where as long as the engine is turning so are the tires. However my tractors front gear driven axle is referred to as front wheel assist.

To burst your bubble but the original name before it became the company name was bush hog. There's actually a original film of the first time it was tested. And one of theFarmers seeing the demo test said that thing goes through Bushes like a hog. So the guy started calling it a bush hog after that he created the company Bush hog.
