    I purchased this subwoofer knowing that it would perform.

    Since the Sony Walkman, 1998 component receiver, Mege Bass days as a kid I fell completely in love with Sony. They know they type of bass I like to hear. Not too punchy but also very much present. That has not changed today over 20 years later. Here I am thinking I can just use 5 speakers without a sub on my Yamaha receiver. The Sony floor standing speakers definitely performs well without a sub but God oh mighty is it like heaven with this Sony sub! With a room correction mic all my speakers put out the bass they need to and it sends the most beautiful signal to this Sony sub. With bass enhancement on and cross over set to 40 HZ on my Yamaha receiver emphasizes the deep lows at ALL volumes and this Sub takes full advantage of that. It seems to know the expected output of this sub so that clipping is not an issue.
    I can imagine running an old school amp with speaker line in may not be as good. Since you only have the crossover on the subwoofer and whatever frequency the receiver puts out by default on speaker level. Not a deal breaker because I never intend on using this sub that way. You have more control over the sound on a separate subwoofer line out.
    Biggest complaint... It does shut off quite fast (3 minutes maybe) when watching movies with at night with little to no bass. So when bass does come you will miss about 1.5 seconds of the bass before the sub turns back on. You do have the option to turn that off on the sub but I keep it on. Saves on electricity and my sound is very balanced so It does not bother me as much. I can make corrections so that it stays on but I like deep lows to get out of control so I keep the crossover on the sub to the lowest while the gain is at the highest. This thing has me wondering why I ever went to the movie theater to begin with.
    Seriously the best thing I could of bought working from home.
    I didn't catch it when it was 99.99 but at 140.00 I still don't feel robbed! If you got the money, BUY THIS THING!

      Yes mine also cost about that much...$150 or so, but let me ask you this question....1st I have the Sony SSCS50 bookshelf speakers for a 2.1 set up...near field and it all sounds so awesome. But how exactly do I set the cross over up to get the best bass sound? But honestly It sounds very good right now, and that subwoofer, no it can't duplicate the power of a SVS, RSL or anything on that level, but the bass is ok for my 1st hifi system.

    I ditched the 12 inch SA-WM500 for this one because of space issues. The 12 inch is extremely potent, this one however, despite its size, is not less potent. I thought it was going to perform poorly but it did not

    There is not a way to "add" a subwoofer to this unit. The speaker connections are for pass through audio. It is also not a good idea to turn the volume all the way up, unless you plan on replacing it soon afterward.

My GF said that she wishes we got the Sony 7.2 receiver and first set of towers that cheap. LOL I'm still using an older Sony center channel speaker and I gave a buddy my older Sony 12 inch sub to help him out. The damn Sony Atmos speakers were costly IMO for two sloped speakers. Hi Robert, I believe you do not need to use expensive cable however you should use a larger size of wire at least. When I was connecting speakers to the sub. Okay normally I don't leave comments but... The switch should be on for reverse the frequency knob is too high you can't turn them both all the way up or it sounds like crap and you also have it on its back where the airport is I watched your unboxing videos of the exact same thing I have the 1080 same exact everything I will say this the speakers actually not as bad as you're making it seem turn the frequency down to half way maybe 3/4 up and you can turn the level all the way up but I will suggest a second subwoofer cuz with the 1080 you can do that you crank it up past 50 the highs tend to overpower the bass. I actually had a couple people laugh when I told them I needed to get a second subwoofer as they listen to it shake my whole house 😂 bought it all from Best buy rate around 1704 everything brand new no open box need to get another subwoofer just because total cost just under 2k after tax when done and that includes to 100 foot rolls of 16 gauge speaker wire I chose this setup over the Denon the only thing I'm not happy with is when I bought the receiver I thought I'd be able to do two subwoofers and 9 speakers unless there's a way to turn on zone 2 with everything else as well

      The Onkyo HT-S9800THX is a very nice-looking system! I like how it’s THX certified. It’s a powerful system. Has more power than the STR-DN1080. From reading reviews it’s not rated as high as Sony. Some customers have glitches with their Onkyo, it’s a hit or a miss. Onkyo does have more inputs if that’s important to you. The Sony super easy to use. It’s hard to say I haven’t tryout Onkyo HT-S9800THX 7.1 package. Not sure how much better it would be. It’s a close competition. The Sony is more popular. Don't mean to sound rude here, but you didn't mention that the speaker terminals in on the rear of your subwoofer where for a receiver to be connected to that doesn't have an rca subwoofer output. And like you said, the other two left and right terminals out work for additional speakers or a subwoofer.

    I bought this 'sub' woofer 2 months ago, it's good for the movies, good for the price but sucks on music. it cannot get anywere below 40Hz.. Even my 8'' JBL active subwoofer goes down to the 22Hz... Sony disappointed me when it comes to the music because as low as the frequency gets below, dB goes low also..

    • @thzrealist
      @thzrealist Před 2 lety +3

      @@danielc5436 Yup, It's not the worst and after a while it plays a litlle bit better but it's not a huge improvement. I believe the box tuning or swapping would help a lot but not acceptable at warranty conditions. I use this woofer together with Yamaha 3 way floor standing speakers and I'm driving them with sony stereo amplifier, I actually love that sony amplifier depends its price and performance, So I'm not a sony "hater", I'm just a reasonable person on my own and i can see the build quality as an IT and Electronics technician. I can say it's decent while watching movies. And for music I can say it's good at " blues " but when it comes to electronic music with high bpm rate or rap or R&B it gets choked out anywhere below 40 Hz and I start to hear " 45 to 35 hz " frequencies from my floor standing speakers ( Because these speaker system box and woofer driver tuned down to 35hz ). It is weird for me lol, you buy a "sub" woofer to improve the frequency levels below 45 Hz but when it comes down below 45 to 35 Hz, I hear these frequencies from my floor standing speakers, because they are able to do it which is that "sub" is not able LOL. and It's not crossover or phase issue, sony just chokes out LOL. I start to hear that "sony" woofer abusing the the frequencies between 65 and 190 hz in some musics. I wanted to return this but for some personal reasons I've been late for this. Once warranty expires, I'm going to modify the corossover and maybe swap the box because at the moment I can't call it subwoofer, maybe superwoofer LOL. Compared to this, my JBL 8'' Subwoofer is still superrior. In some forums and even at sony product page they says this woofer can go down like 28Hz. But to make this happen we might need to fine tune the listening area and this is not a practical solution and not guaranteed. I keep typing longer but all I want is to share my experience and let those people know who are interested in to this product. And I can say for those who is really into this product for "Music", you should really go to a hi-fi store and listen this and get a clue ( even this is not accurate because acoustic of the store or shop would be different and perform better than your listening area ) But if you just want to add some color to movies and little bit to tunes, this is not bad for it's price, but not the best also.
