"The Founder": A fast-food story

- A new movie dramatizes how a visionary milk shake mixer salesman turned the McDonald brothers' fast-food restaurant into a franchise powerhouse. Ben Tracy interviews Michael Keaton and John Lee Hancock, the star and director of "The Founder."
Great movie but felt bad for McDonald brothers

"Great movie but felt bad for McDonald brothers"
They should have hired better lawyers. Who the hell makes a million dollar deal on a handshake?
At least the Winkelboss Twins got 80+ million in Facebook stock. Which means they probably had had better lawyers (As shown in the movie "The Social Network").
John niner8 me too 😢 thats real monopoly for you. Take properties
Finished watching the movie and I was blown away how amazing this film is and how brutal Ray Kroc was, Michael Keaton done a brilliant job. Gotta feel for the McDonald brothers. Quality film
I don’t “feel” for them....they made a terrible business decision and still managed to become rich beyond their wildest dreams (which is why the family isn’t too bitter about it).
But I do think Ray Kroc was a snake in the grass and am glad this movie is giving the McDonald brothers their proper due.
Ray Kroc was an A** hole, but he helped a lot of people become rich including his own secretary. Much of the fortune of the Kroc family was given away through philanthropy by Joan Kroc and the foundation she started. The deal with the McDonald's brothers was about 30 million in today's value.
I am very happy with the work of Ray Krock, otherwishe, MC didn't became what it is now
Game Guild that’s understandable, but you have to also be happy that the McDonald’s brothers eventually got their share.
Blackpilled Saint Then don’t eat there, simple.
For the grandson of the true founders, if you are seeing this, just know that there are many people out there that know the truth.

The McDonald Brothers and Ray Kroc had a terrible business relationship.

Moral of the story. Have everything in writing lol no handshake deals
Edward T. Remember the song “Smiling Faces” it says, “beware of the handshake, that hides the snake” that’s always been true..., or like the pat on the back, might hold you back

another lesson from the movie
Moral of the story - be a great businessman and you can steal peoples businesses and wives and take them as your own with no repercussions 💯💰
They owned and sold their percentage of the McDonalds corporation lol
handshake deal was the biggest business gaff in history
that was one expensive handshake...
Let me throw something at you. How much money would they have made if they took some of that money they got and bought McDonald's stock when it went public? Well initially they could have bought the stock for 0.35 a share. It's worth $185 a share today. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to adjust for stock splits. So let's say they bought $100,000 worth initially just to be safe. That would be 285,714 shares of stock X 364(adjusting for stock splits) = approximately 103,999,896 shares X $185 = $19.2 BILLION. There is nothing that would have prevented them from doing that since it was a public company and available to anyone who wanted to invest. Granted I am not taking into account inheritance tax since they died in 1971 and 1998 respectively, but you get the idea.
Get it in writing my father always said.
Hand “shake”
@Paul y your math is wrong. Do it again.
Advice: Never share your secrets or someone will steal it and become successful.
Amanda Lo he stole the brand, he even explains in the movie the secrets meant nothing without the name.
You meant to say: **Patent your ideas/secrets FIRST before sharing them.*
Social Network is a must watch if u like this movie
Incorrect. Share your ideas ALWAYS, get the word out, get tips and advice because once you realise how HARD it is to get successful or startup a company, you will realise that it is so tiring and so much hard work amd effort is needed that most people give up and don't bother to steal your idea anymore because most people neither have the capacity for all that hard work, nor the passion. So relax, and go ahead and follow your passion and do what you do best.
Also Trademark your company name.
It’s so crazy how the first McDonald’s ever made is down the street from my school and a 30 minute walk from my house. History never ceases to amaze me.
And the big Mac was first distributed in the Uniontown McDonald’s at the Walnut Hill shopping center 10 minutes from my house

The fact Kroc had the audacity to say ” If they [the brothers] had played their cards right, that 0.5 per cent would have made them unbelievably wealthy.” That’s like randomly knocking someone out and saying “well if he would’ve payed attention”
He didn't say that.
I would be extremely bitter and gutted if I was missing out on $100 million a year
I think it was a billion not million
Delay it’s a $100 million. It said it at the end of the movie.
@@Arnostic adjust for inflation it should be $ 100 billion by now. The brothers should have that documented they should not rely on the handshake deal with Croc. @@AshNonokPlays yeah the handshake deal was a bad move
They never learned when they trusted Kroc, yet they did it again and lost $100 million a year with a mere handshake.

Edward Koepke That's incorrect. The fish sandwich came to be from a competition between Kroc and a franchisee. The franchisee came up with the filet to still draw in customers who didn't eat meat for lent, and Kroc thought the hula burger would fair better. Guess who won that bet?

@Brianmeligan1992
How would they have had more?
All the franchises they sold before they met Kroc operated independently and the brothers did *zero* work in maintaining any connection, other than collecting a percentage. These restaurants sold anything on their menus. Dozens of other restaurants sprang up using a copycat method that McDonald's used. The brothers also didn't trademark their name until 1961.
They were successful with their San Bernardino restaurant, but had absolutely *no clue* on how to grow the business, especially since they didn't seem to want to take responsibility for it.
McDonald's would have absolutely failed without Ray Kroc.

Yes, and they bring it to you as well.. too bad
all this innovation and the milkshake machine is still always down everytime i go to mcdonalds.
alpha bryan No it's just because they don't want to clean the machine.
The Mcdonalds brothers always knew that damn milkshake machine was a mistake. Milkshake is MILK not powder!
It hasn’t been powder for years. McDonald’s switched back to milk many years ago.
The milkshake machine is “down” simply because employees don’t want to clean it after a certain hour. Usually if you go to McDonald’s before 7pm or so, you’ll get an ice cream. After 7 pm, the machine will normally be “down” (I.e. washed and turned off for the night.)
I don't know why it is a big meme
I just saw the movie last night and I recommend seeing it! (Spoilers) It was motivational seeing how a smart and simple design of the speedy system changed the world. However, Kroc's Greed was really distasteful and I liked how this was not sugar coated in the film.
I'm really surprised that McDonald's actually let this movie be made.
People want some authenticity these days...
so yeah, it makes sense
It probably wouldn't've been made if Kroc were still alive.

If you mean the film, yes, but it's been a while. It was o.k. Why?
I worked in a McDonald's in England for three years and loved it. I trained to become a floor manager but decided to go off to college instead and didn't stay long enough to take the exam. Part of the exam prep was the history of McDonald's. I later moved to Redlands, CA in 1992. I remember visiting the site of the original McDonald's and it was emotional. I didn't know the full history before watching the film, but I knew enough to know that I was at the place where McDonald's was born. I loved this video, thank you for sharing.

I have been a student of business my entire life… I’ve known the story from the beginning, as both my mother and my father worked for the corporation at one time. Some very valuable lessons can be taken from the story, and many of us still consider the McDonald’s brothers the founders of modern day fast food and the business models that derived from their humble beginnings. This is a story that should be told and appreciated over and over again.
I was once told that everything has already been done, it’s what you do with it today… That makes it different. I started my small business with competition all around me, yet we continue to grow and prosper. The wheel may not be able to be reinvented, but you can still add your mark that makes it different. Take into account the ingenuity and the dream, and make your dreams a reality by putting in the work.

I love Mcdonalds. My respect to the ORIGINAL founders, the Mcdonalds brothers/family. The brothers supplied the idea, and Ray Kroc supplied the drive to get big, and they needed each other, but Kroc was not an honorable man. He said business is brutal, but that didn't have to apply to the Mcdonalds brothers, because they weren't competitors. They gave him the idea, he should've gave them more than their 1% out of respect.

I also remember seeing a McDonald's at practically every train station in the Tokyo area while riding on the train. When the train stops and the doors open, I was staring at a McDonald's just across the way. It was absolutely unbelievable. To top it all off, I prefer to eat at McDonald's in Japan because I never had a bad order. It was always correct and super fresh with the best customer service ever! Recently, saw the movie, loved it! Great piece of history, learned something new, felt bad for the Mcdonalds brothers, very unfortunate their own creation and dream was stolen from right out of their own hands. Ray took their vision and ran with it.
Sonneborn's genius is how Kroc "took their vision and ran with it" because he was failing miserably due to high operations cost (biggest being monthly rent for the land since he didn't own it). You own the land, you can evict those who don't adhere to the high standards, and you get monthly rent which you can use to buy more land and open more franchises. HE is the reason McDonald's grew, not Kroc who would have gone bankrupt without him.
ya Ray crook steal the restaurant, franchise it to other people and leeching from other works

@@mozambique9113 ya, he was a salesman before this too so that why he so toxic evil
I don’t think the Brother’s would have made it as big as it is today. Let’s just be honest they were already getting tired, and Warren nothing to do with getting more franchises.
I remember going there as a child. Used to give out paper hats to us. It was great! I wanted to work there when I was little.
Ray Kroc is the founder of the McDonald franchise system. The McDonald brothers are the founders and creators of the McDonald's fast food system. That is something that can never be taken away from the McDonald brothers no matter what anybody say's about Ray Kroc's involvement in the business.
The same happened to Xerox. They developed a windows based system for their computer, both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates saw this system and took it one step further and as they say, the rest is history.
Sonneborn is more the founder of the franchise system, because until he got involved Kroc was letting the franchisee pick the land, and operate. Sonneborn came up with the idea to own the land, and franchise it out. By the way, the brothers had franchises as well (the one in the video was one of their 3 original ones), but they couldn't keep quality control standards, so they opted just to do those 3. What Sonneborn made Kroc realize is that by owning the land you force them to adhere by evicting those who don't. Plus, by owning the land you get rent payments every month which you can then use to buy more land and open more franchises. Sonneborn is the one who took McDonald's to the next level, not Kroc- Kroc fell flat on his face trying to run his own primarily due to high costs of operations (biggest being monthly rent since he didn't own the land).
I remember reading about the McDonald brothers and Ray Kroc from a book back in the 90s. The movie mirrored it for the most part.
it's about 85 to 90% accurate. The movie doesn't portray Sonneborn's part, because without his real estate vision, Kroc would have fallen flat on his face. He needed to own the land that the franchise was built on, that's why Sonneborn's famous line holds true "you're not in the burger business, you're in the real estate business".
I read an autobiography by Ray Kroc called..."Grinding It Out". It was published in 1987. I read it a long time ago, but I remember it being a pretty good book.
Movie was SAD AF. First time ever shedding a tear for a fast food movie/company. ;(

You know after watching the film and getting to hear the brothers story how they first started out on their first Mcdonalds. It one of those classic things go bad in the start, they worst when try something new cause at that time no one was ready, you try something flashy it ends bad. But then through out all of that pain and just as your about to go to the old ways, a little spark of hope happens, and then that spark grows bigger and bigger until it a giant flame. But Ray Kroc's sure he may have brought it world wide, but he will never be the true founder of the McDonalds.

Alex Gamboa, if it weren't for ray crook the entire United States would be a lot healthier then it is today mentally and physically. Instead its the #1 obese country in the world. Congratulations is all I can say.
wrong. If it wasn't for Sonneborn you would not know McDonald's today. Why? Because Kroc was FAILING on his own until he got Sonneborn involved who convinced him he's not in the burger business, he's in the real estate business. This is going to be a lot to follow. When you own the land, you have more control over what's on it, because you don't like what they're doing, kick them out! Plus, since you own it, you'll get money from them every month in rent- they have to pay you before their business is even going! That generates more money you can use to then buy more land, and then get more franchisees. Sonneborn is the real brains to their growth, not Kroc, but he'd like you to believe he was probably the one who came up with that too, not the one who had to mortgage their house and nearly lose it because his McDonald's franchise was going bust due to high costs (one being rent for the land since he didn't own it).
Kroc didn't grow McDonald's any faster on his own than the brothers. It wasn't until Sonneborn got involved and made him realize he was in the real estate business not the burger business that it grew, because by owning the land you can not only evict those who you don't like what they're doing, but you get monthly rent payments from them which you can use to buy more land and open more franchises- Sonneborn is the real brains behind their mammoth growth, not Kroc, but that liar would probably have you believe he also came up with that too, not almost lost everything, because he couldn't make a dime in profits due to high costs (one of which was rent payments to the owner of the land since he didn't own the land).
@George Kouts he is
I think the movie was great. I watched it on a plane ride home in 2018 or so. I think it really does put things in perspective. And its a movie so I won't say everything is 100% accurate but I do believe Ray Kroc was as ruthless as they make him out to be.
Just a greedy guy who wanted it all and didn't feel bad about who he hurt along the way. He did open a McDonald's near the brothers original franchise to put them out of business after he bought them out (there was no need to do that but he was ruthless), divorced various wives to get the girl he wanted and told the Padres players they stunk over a PA system during a home game of the Padres team he owned in the early 80's. So this was not the nicest guy around.
BUT credit where it is due. McDonald's would not be what it is today without his vision and passion. McDonald's was a cute little business with some locations here and there before Kroc, after Kroc it was a major business and name brand. To say he stole it or the brothers could have been millionaires without him is not true. He paid each of them 1,000,000 + taxes paid and they lived a very comfortable life. Yes Ray wasn't the nicest man but the brothers didn't complain as they were fine. Getting one million dollars tax free to enjoy the rest of your life aint a bad thing I assure you. They didn't have his passion or energy to do what he did. So it really all worked out for all involved. Of course would have been great if Ray was a nicer person but nice guys do finish last after all.
Personally I don't even like McDonald's food so none of this matters to me. But I always find the story interesting and I used to love the advertising growing up. Catchy songs, fun characters and slogans. I enjoyed the advertising more than the actual going there.
Great movie. Keaton was (as usual) stellar.

it made me admire Sonneborn more, because Sonneborn got Kroc to go into the real estate business, not the burger business. Since they owned the land, they can evict those who don't follow the rules, and get monthly rent payments which can then be used to buy more land to open more franchises. Felt bad for them but that is the first rule in business.. verbal agreements are worth dogshit.. never take someone at their word, only what’s on a contract and notarized
Kroc is a crook
Yes and no. He stole the idea but he was the one who made it fly....that's the reality.
@@Thejbirdy not really, did you see the movie? *SONNEBORN* is who made it fly. Kroc was going to lose everything until Sonneborn got him to invest in the land, not the burger. Kroc was nothing but a lucky swindler who took credit for the McDonald brothers and Sonneborn's ideas!
Jay Birdy How?
Trump: Hold my McDonald's order
not really... the McDonalds brothers would have never made 10% of what they made without Kroc.. they didnt have the business sense
They got an old fast food restaurant story. I can't wait to watch this movie and see the the effort it takes to build a Company
I just watched the movie and its heartbreaking to see. But im very happy that the story is told now that is the least that could be done for this unfairness
Everything in writing. Schultz did the same with Starbucks, though he bought the company fairly.
all right; SEEING THEIR STORY ON THE BIG SCREEN, IS KINDA PAYBACK AGAINST RAY KROC FOR SCREWING THEIR FAMILY OVER FOR 60 YEARS; THEY FINALLY HAVE A HAPPY ENDING!!
2 schmucks with an idea they thought should not be shared and getting paid $2 million in 1961 for that idea, I think was payback...
Awesome Story for Both brothers and Ray!
Born and raised in Downey...I used to eat there all the time... Friday night hangout for after football games!
Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️❤️🇺🇸🛐🗽
If I might visit this historic landmark, I will respect a minute of silence in honor of the McDonald's brothers, and then I'll order something.
anyone notice how the grandson looks like nick offerman??
I know....I saw that too....they should have switched the roles for that reason alone! :)
Great movie, very enlightening. I always thought that it was Mayor Mccheese who founded Mcdonald's. Man was I misslead!
Thanks for post, now I’ll stream the flick 🤗
Most people feel bad for the McDonald brothers, and make Ray Crock the villain... When in reality, thanks to Ray Crock, mcdonald's is what we know today. The McDonald's brothers lost because they were too afraid. Entrepreneurs will see the story from this point of view.
They better make movies about real life fast food pioneers like KFC , BURGER KING, WENDYS, ARBYS, DOMINOS PIZZA AND TACO BELL AND CARLS JR AND JACK IN THE BOX AND WHITE CASTLES AND SO ON :) im getting hungry
I feel like this role, Michael Keaton played, was just as touching to me as his Batman was but in a very different way
Just watched the film “The Founder” and it’s very saddening about the truth. Rip to the McDonald brothers
"You wanna get nuts?, COME ON, LETS GET NUTS!!"
Ray Kroc was a visionary and a genius who tried to drag the McDonald brothers kicking and screaming to success, doing all the work while trying to meet their demands. Eventually he had to cut them loose, which they were happy to do since they didn't want to do what it took. To come back and complain after Kroc creates a global phenomenon is unconscionable, they couldn't see it, even as it was happening.
To be successful it is necessary to do those things that most people would not be willing to do.
The guy who really blew up McDonald's was really Croc. That's just it.
Diligent and vigilant are the way to success
I got a McDonald's ad before this
The Founder is the reason I switched to Burger King
I don't like McDonald's. I prefer Burger King or Wendy's.
…and the orange Hi-C
@Gunther penguin true but at least they did it on their own and didn’t con the McDonald’s brothers out of their business
Your $5-10
Won't make a difference dude. XD 😂
Yeah, I like Burger King more than Mc Donald's Burger 🍔 too. Hahaha

Funny you should mention that.
Keith Kramer and Matthew Burns visited the San Bernardino McDonald's and were SO impressed with it, that they took the idea back to Florida and started their own restaurant that would evolve into Burger King.
So yes, they actually *did* steal something and never paid out. Meanwhile, Kroc approached the brothers to work tirelessly for them, and made them into millionaires...something that the brothers themselves wouldn't have been able to achieve with their San Bernardino burger shop.
This needs to be a movie!
Loved visiting the McDonalds museum in San Bernardino on the site where the original mcD’s was. The McDonald brothers back office building is the only remaining original structure still standing
One thing that isn't mentioned here, but was in past books, is that the $2.7 million payment made to the brothers (which was to equal $1 million for each after taxes at that time) was to be a replacement for the ongoing 0.5% royalty. Not sure which is true, but if that is the true answer, it could explain why the brothers (or at least his grandfather) was never bothered by not getting that royalty each year (knowing that he had signed it away to get the one time $1 million payment, which sounds like very little today but at the time no one could have figured how much the company would be worth in the future).
The royalty payment was supposed to continue after the sale but was done on a handshake deal which Kroc reneged on. From what I've read, that and the fact that Kroc stole their name and forced them to remove it from the original McDonald's restaurant and then put them out of business by opening a McDonald's just blocks away from their restaurant lead to Maurice McDonald's death because he was so distraught about it.
Be honest if somebody did me in like that they would lose there life.
Floyd1504 Seems you have anger issues. Too much McDonald's maybe?
“What a Kroc” ! I bet that is where this saying came from .lol
i worked at McDonald's I was fry cooking the burgers myself being a McDonald's employee was great giving that opportunity working there.
That was a really good movie. I remember going to that McDonald's in Downey from time to time when I was a kid.
