  • When I first accepted the job as president and CEO at Union Rescue Mission, I could not believe how good God was to me, and I could not have imagined the incredible roller coaster of challenges I would face, lessons I would learn, nor the triumphs I would cherish.
My journey at the mission has literally consumed my heart, soul, and body for the past 19 years. Folks think I've had some years taken off my life by the work at the mission, but actually, I believe God has come alongside me and extended my life while I did this work.
As the day is approaching for me to bid my final farewell, I'm filled with a profound sense of gratitude to God for his faithfulness and willingness to use a broken vessel like me to bring a little bit of light into the darkness of skid row, to the brave and precious souls living on the harsh streets of skid row.
You are the reason I've tirelessly labored over the years. I've walked with you, talked with you, learned from you, even stayed out on the streets with you. Your resilience in the face of adversity and your spirit of survival in the midst of despair have forever changed me.
My recent malady that put me in the hospital for five weeks made me aware of how you've suffered and helped me relate much better. With your incredible courage, you're my heroes. I will always carry your faces, your stories, and your dreams with me.
I am truly grateful to the beloved donors who have generously poured out their hearts and resources to fuel our dreams. You've made it possible for us to never turn away a woman or a family who comes to our door, to always say yes, to never say no. You've stood with us through thick and thin; without you, the beacon of hope we've provided to those in need would've flickered out. I implore you to please continue. Your support for the battle against homelessness in LA is far from over, and it's your generosity that will forever change lives.
The unsung heroes of this mission have been the incredible volunteers who've selflessly given their time and their energy. Your dedication and compassion have given hope to those who desperately need it. Some of my most cherished memories have been working alongside you to cook and serve Thanksgiving meals for thousands of precious souls. Over the years, I humbly ask that all of our volunteers continue to be beacons of love and kindness in a world that often forgets the least of these among us; you are our secret sauce in our recipe to welcome and love our guests like Jesus loves them.
The faithful, steady beating heart of the mission has been the dedicated staff who've been my colleagues and companions on this arduous journey. I could not be prouder of the work we've accomplished together. Your tireless commitment to our mission has been an inspiration to me over the years.
When I first came to Union Rescue Mission, another mission leader in town, knowing how important it was for me to put Christ first in my life, presented me with a plant, which included an inspirational note encouraging me to stay true to my Christian conviction and keep Union Rescue Mission to our Christian conviction. I've done my best to live up to this conviction, and over the years, that plant has turned into three huge plants.
As I move on from here, I now want to present a seedling to each of the staff in hopes they will continue to keep Christ as the center of all the work being done here. As I step aside, I urge all the staff to keep focused on the work that God has entrusted you with. It is your unwavering dedication and compassion, with God's help, that will make the impossible possible.
In this time of transition, my heart is filled with hope and encouragement. Together we've made a difference. We've witnessed first-hand the miracle of changed lives. The battle against homelessness is far from over, but I've seen what can be achieved when hearts and hands join together for a common purpose.
Thank you, my dear friends. For a remarkable 19 years, my journey with the Union Rescue Mission may be ending, but the mission itself lives on stronger than ever.
As I prepare to pass the torch and leave this city that I love, the city of angels, I offer this prayer.
Dear heavenly Father, I pray for our beloved city, Los Angeles, and the people of Los Angeles, and for the relentless crisis of people devastated by homelessness. God, extend your hand of compassion. Continue to touch those who suffer. Raise up courageous individuals, donors, volunteers, and staff to continue the life-changing work that has happened at the Mission for over 130 years. May the peace of God fall upon the city. Amen and amen.
    Andy Bales

    Andy,
Hearing you say “CHRIST first”(4:06) only echoes the courageous excellence that I saw & admired in you, serving under your incredible leadership years ago.
Psalm 16:3 “As for the saints who are on the earth, ‘They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight’..”
May GOD establish the faithful work of your heart and hands. (Ps 90:17)
