Personally, I’d love to see all of these folks again, sitting down for these types of discussion. Maybe a couple times in the year? There is much wisdom among this group, and I thank God for each of them.
I agree completely.
Yes Plz! These gifts are rare to see & teach & inspire me deeply. Plz do more videos like these. To Tyler, all of your videos I've seen have been wonderful mind & heart opening gifts to me. Professor Tim, I'm a long time student of The Bible Project Classroom, WOW! To have access to each of you! I am so grateful.
Agree but with a more diverse representation:)
@@rachelmarie8067 Shai line would be a wonderful addition to this discussion
@@rachelmarie8067 Let's focus on having knowledgeable, wise, mature, and virtuous followers of Jesus speak and focus less on the color of their skin or where they grew up :)
I'm tearing up at Christine's comments about motherhood and prayer. Thank you for including her.
How the heckin’ heck did you manage to get, like, almost all my favourite people to listen to in one interview?! This is GOLD. Thank you for this.
And all the people they're quoting. Guess we have a little family being created :)
Heckin' heck!? You sound like my family 😂😂😂
Thank you for including Christine Caine. It's so valuable to have a woman's voice on a prayer panel, and she is very wise. This was a great discussion. Thank you!
I concur 🙋🏾♀️
@@koalalou68 Yes we need to hear more women's voices among men's preaching
YES. It reminds me of how much Jesus has redeemed women and our place in society. She is such a godly example for women, and she has wisdom for both men and women to offer!
Amen, Cori! Thank you for saying that.
I was crying when Pete was talking about using the doodling and drawing part of the brain to connect to God! That’s exactly what us artists have been exploring and it’s so undermined by the church…
I used to carry a sketchbook to church and sketch the people in church. It actually helped me listen better. 😊
I agree. There is a movement today where artistic expression in the church is increasing in various ways. God created us, to create, and we can glorify Him in all we do. I LOVED this video, have watched it 4X. About a decade ago, homeschooling our kids, we would doodle little proverbs in a tiny book for fun. As a visual learner... I've always struggled with 'words' and remembering scripture. Visual note taking and doodling really helps brains who prefer to learn that way - learn and remember. To hear Pete talk about it was mind-blowingly affirming. Sounds like you are an artist, may you be encouraged in this area! 🥰
Tim Mackie.. what a treasure!
It’s nice to see Portland engage with teachers from other areas
Imagine watching a morning show with these fine people? This has helped me grow in my learning.
Love this! I don’t know any of these people, but I think I was lead to watch this because I’ve been struggling with ‘unplugging’ to connect with God as someone with ADHD. The comment the gentleman made to ‘pray the way God made you’ literally just set me free! God is so good, He knows how much I’ve been beating myself up about this! Like I’m so shocked, no doubt that was truly for me. Thank You God! 🙌🥹
Great discussion from wonderful people. Would love to see a few more ethnicities represented here though. The Global South has so much to teach us about prayer!
Practice the presence of God
by Brother Lawrence
While he did everything , including washing the dishes, He spoke to God. It's like "hanging out" with God in doing life. We take Him with us! It's not all reclusive or quiet. It's active and productive, too. Being alone with God can be within us in a busy space. Kinestheticly , yes! Connecting with God during any productive activity, sometimes without conversation. We are not double minded but mindful.
This is good.... and there is more!
Totally agree Resa
Heard about Brother Lawrence from both Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. They highly recommend "practice the presence of God" book. I think its time to read it.
That book blew me away! A treasure for sure!
That book changed my life
Girlllll you nailed….well said. Thank you
Wow this made me think. I realized now after watching you talk about different kinds of prayer for half an hour. That my morning walks to work are in a way a prayer. I also realized that when I presently listen to the birds chirping and animals in my walk I have a heightened feeling of Gods presence around me, this always make me smile and makes me feel good and relaxed.
As someone who is a mom, everything changed the moment we realize this little life was given to me to care for, to love, to keep safe, to nurture, to hold, to mold. I realized the Love of God was all of these things for me... through the 3 am feedings... the diaper changes... their thriving, their milestones. All of these reminded me daily to love unconditionally, to be compassionate, to be a resource to others. To being grateful everyday for all of these moments. Being a mom transformed my life to see God as a beautiful father. And looking to him as the best teacher to be a mom. I'm so grateful for this fellowship.
As a busy mom, This brought me to tears. Thank you for these truths! Especially what Pete had to say, about finding Jesus in the changing of dirty diapers and then using focused times with Jesus, just as that.
Yes, that moved my heart too. The sacredness of the mundane.
Love this Tyler, I have been in recent months literally disciplined to have the intake of the Word of God, first thing in the morning and last thing at night as a way to sanitize my thoughts. Other than that I literally have a conversation throughout my day with the Holy Spirit and He has taught me somehow to be able to pray in my mind and be able to do whatever I need to do at work at the same time. I find myself receiving words and directions from Him and constantly, and He has become my closest friend and my Counselor in all things. I ask Him what He thinks even for things that are apparently trivial, but I've come to know that He actually loves that. And because of that lifestyle, I can honestly say that I feel His presence constantly irrespective what is going on around me.
Psalm 143:8 ESV
[8] Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
Good Stuff
❤❤
The garden could also mean Gethsemane. Where we weep, struggle for God to intervene and it's hard. It could also mean the garden of the empty tomb where God answers prayer and we are excited and awe struck. Whatever garden we are with Him in Paradise because they are His gardens. Amen ❤
Dude I love this, this is what I was thinking as well
To me, Tim Mackie is so spiritual, he really understood unceasing prayer. Unceasing prayer is not a religiously designed plan of prayer, it is to be aware of the presence of God and his creative and merciful power for each of us his children at every moment! This is the paradise! It is now and here when we are in GOD'S presence
Agreed!
I really appreciate Pete’s input. I feel like a dualism was indeed starting to form in the conversation here; a sort of separating the “mundane” from the “sacred” when indeed Christ’s presence is not locked into the quiet and aloof. Making prayer into a sort of esoteric practice. Although there is a time for quiet contemplation, Christ is not exclusively locked into that neat little frame. You can experience Christ through the most mundane things, by simply remembering his imminent presence. Theoria Physike!
@Abner Rubio, I agree with you.
I stressed not being a morning person then I thought … Hebrew days start at our night. ❤
Also Pete’s comment, “Most of the books on spirituality have been written by introverts”… i am def not an introvert. Just that profound observation freed me sooooo much from a lot of what I have read about prayer. I do find stillness really helpful and necessary to hear the “whisper” of God, but man. I hear him on the go a lot too, and when i am in the middle conversation with others. That “unceasing prayer” convo, so helpful.
This is by far the most practical and impactful video on prayer that I have ever watched. I’m really struggling with spiritual burnout right now so this is exactly what I needed :)
Amen.
I really appreciated Pete’s reminder of how okay, and ultimately important, it is to integrate prayer into every aspect of our life. So often, we compartmentalize the “Christian” parts of our life when Christ desires to be part of every aspect of our lives. As a dad of 6, soon to be 7, kids, I can totally relate to the sanctification of working through the mindset shift that kids aren’t a distraction from God but exactly where He often wants me to find him.
"No Bible, No Breakfast", is legendary!
Thank you all for this absolutely edifying conversation, and for sharing your life stories with us too. I am particularly thankful to have Chris Caine be a part of this--she certainly shared some distinct perspectives as a woman & mother, and that was so encouraging to hear!
Love the thought about how ours thoughts before bed and when we wake can shape our thinking and lives. It reminds me of the hymn Be you my vision -"be thou my best thought in the day and the night". May that be our hearts and prayers to our saviour and redeemer.
Thank you for these thoughts. Having some diversity would add unique perspective and flavour on this important topic.
When I first became a Christian in 1972, I prayed in the spirit for an hour a day. God would meet me so incredibly. As my life progressed I no longer did or could do this. I really needed a new or deeper way to have this through my day. Thank you
This was an incredible round table and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE that no one's prayer life looked the same. We always wonder if we're doing this right because ours doesn't look like someone else's. But here out of 5 people, they all had different methods of prayer and different things the Lord has been working on them through prayer. Our God is so vast that He can be available for every single moment in the day for every single person, no matter where you are in the physical and spiritual. 😭🙌🏻❤️🕊📖✝️
Without a table. 😊
Thank you so much for this conversation. It has truly blessed my soul. God bless you all for taking the time to share. Thank you Jesus for sharing your love through these wonderful brothers and sisters.
🙏🏻✝️🙌🏻♥️🕊️
Wow. This was incredible. I could listen to all of you talk for hours. Thank you all so much for sharing. Thank you Tyler for pulling them all together. This is what I needed to hear.
Yes yes!! 🥳
Comer has an awesome podcast and he is one that can really capture my attention.
Beautifully said! So much appreciation for all of them and their honesty as they journey just like any of us.
I wish they would keep beginners in mind in all of these conversations. Because they use systems of prayers and other spiritual strategies with titles which many of us have never heard about and just keep getting lost in all of it. Nevertheless, overall it was a blessing to listen to this!
Unceasing prayer is your direct, and constant communication with God throughout the day, as the Spirit leads you, and gives utterance to your deepest feelings, and thoughts. It doesn't have to be on your knees, or any place special: my car is holy ground for worshipping, as I walk through the grocery store aisle I continue to pray, as I clean, do laundry, talk to my kids, or communicate with my husband: all praying. For guidance, wisdom, strength, peace, to be a testimony and a light in this dark world, for joy IN the storm, and above all else, to accept, and be willing to obey God's will...despite my own, opposite volition. In everything, to want to give God the glory...in everything we do (tasks). Do it all for the glory of God. Truth is, we are engaged in constant warfare, where the enemy doesn't take a break even for a second, that is why we have to constantly be vigilant in prayer. May the Lord help us where we fall short. The results or answers we seek are in concordance with the effort we put forth in the battle on our knees.
This reminds me that God views believers as his children and loves it when they speak to him. He enjoys the uniqueness of each of us.
Glad I bumped into this awesome God honoring discussion on prayer .. subscribing and planning to watch and listen to all tha is available
Literally this has been my struggle since becoming a mom … quiet time with God … God Himself has led me to such an adventure in it rather than my own control and expectations. Thank you for sharing, it reaches me so deeply I could cry (and I don’t cry!) ❤
So beautiful - a collective of brothers and a sister whom I appreciate, sitting and sharing together honesty and wisdom from the same Spirit - this one is a keeper. 🙂
This is incredibly powerful insight. Prayer is paradise here, the garden now. Its our ability to connect to reality, to the intimate presence of God and surrender to Him to be at rest.
Favorite tips from this:
-Pray often, routinely, and earnestly
-Combat our 'facts' with the Truth (focus more on Word of God rather than world/circumstances)
-Find intentional quiet time to connect; especially first thing in the morning and last thing before bed (no Bible, no breakfast)
-Acknowledge and recognize the presence of God and remember/meditate on His insights/scripture often
-Be fully transparent and honest before God rather than polished/impersonal (He knows our heart and is eternally merciful)
-Pray the Scriptures (Psalm 5, Lord's Prayer) or pre-written prayers as guide
-Practice varied prayer methods
-Tune in to what the Lord is saying, pay attention to His revelations/reminders throughout the day
I ended up here at 4 in the morning, when I should’ve/could’ve used this time in prayer, but I wanted the dopamine hit. I’m sure the Holy Spirit used this conversation to reveal and guide me into deeper intimacy. Looking forward to reading the book!
So beautifully transparent, almost poetic in places. I have listened over and over. Thank you all.
As someone who works overnights 4-5 days a week for the last 5 years. I very much miss a morning routine to attempt this. My days and nights all blend together.
Caleb Pennock, I hear you! I work nights as well! But often when I get home I am too awake to go to sleep! So I make it a routine to worship the LORD and pray! It's so amazing how the LORD meets us as we set aside time for HIM! My prayer life has really been so sweet!
As a matter of fact, the LORD continues to minister to my heart through the night! He gives me scripture and worship songs! So often HE is the first thing I consider when I awaken!
So GOD bless you on your journey in prayer! 💞🙏💞
This is full of beautiful wisdom, thoroughly enjoyed it! The only thing I'd say is that I heard marriage mentioned a few times which is totally fine and makes complete sense in the context and nuances of the discussion but for those of us who are single, it can make us feel a little isolated as we can't relate to that. But overall, lovely conversation.
Thank you for your honesty and transparency. Great facilitation Tyler. Thank you for making it practical and understandable, and making the rest of us feel normal amongst the five most incredible people who's lives, thoughts and wisdom highly influence my life (for the better). Would love to see more of you all!
Great discussion! I’m so happy Christine Caine and Peter Krueger addressed the busyness of life and how to find God in those moments.
When I forget to be thankful my prayer life grows cold. Thankfulness really is, from what I can see, the foundation of prayer. "Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving". ~ Colossians 4:2
Thank you all for your honesty and openness. The whole conversation was really helpful, but especially the end as you shared what God is doing with you right now.
Its clear that so many people in my own church family feel like they dont "pray correctly" and feel so scared to pray audibly. Love the "resting" language. Thank god for you folks.
Finished Fear No Lies. Onto Praying like Monks Living Like Fools 2023!
Pete Greig, THANK YOU! I almost started crying when you talked about movement in prayer. I so appreciate that.
YES! This reminded me about Revelation Fitness' mission. Have you heard of them? Physical Health/activity while in the Word etc. "revving the Word"
Prayer rules and daily, weekly, yearly prayer rhythms were never "taken out of the common church". It still lives on in Eastern Orthodoxy; across the globe. Fidelity is not rebellious; it is simply what faithfulness looks like, no matter how rebellious it may seem to the broader culture at any given time. God bless these protestant leaders, but there is a bit of arrogance underlying their presumptions. It is indeed wonderful how more and more of them are rediscovering "hesychasm" but this seems to happen every 10 or 15 years among popular protestant movements (missional, emergent, etc.). It then becomes no more than a "trend" or "movement" among one or two pockets within denominations or church groups, only to die out with a change in leadership or forgotten/buried by whatever the next "trend" is. Without broader ecclesial backing, encouragement and promotion, it will not last. And this is just one of the realities that opened and challenged me to seek out and eventually join the Orthodox church.
I love the example the man gave of connecting with God while changing a diaper. The light bulb went off in my understanding by this, as someone who deals with ADHD. Thank you!
The Fellowship of the Prayerful Life
This makes me think of Teresa of Avila and the interior mansion of the soul. When she talks as she grew deeper into the interior mansions, her prayer life became more and more silent. So important in our journey with Jesus.
3796 souls helped and blessed by this panel, let’s share and bless others too!!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and wisdom 🙏 ❤️
The multi-faceted Body of Christ. Thank you for letting us in on this.
Interesting that there are hundreds of years of literature on this subject within the Catholic and the Russian and Greek Orthodox Churches.
St. John of the Cross, Theresa of Avila, The Philokalia, Thomas Merton. John Michael Talbot wrote a great book on the subject, “The Lover and the Beloved, a Franciscan Way of Prayer.”
The Holy Spirit will lead you to the depths of intimacy and transformation if you answer and submit to the call. Past masters can help provide a framework and encouragement until it’s time to leave them behind. Ultimately the absorption into God is a One on one endeavor.
Agreed, totally interesting. I’m a young Catholic myself and I’m not nearly as formed on these practices as I want to be BUT it is so refreshing to hear other Christians tap into these ancient spiritual traditions that are commonplace in high liturgical or apostolic traditions. So many Christians from Protestant traditions really fear this idea of ritual and tradition so I’m happy to hear words like “monasticism, liturgy of the hours, vespers, examen” etc
I think we often forget what happened in the temple when Christ died. That veil that separated us from God was torn and the Holy of Holies - was opened to us As such, there is nowhere we can be in this universe where God is not. Emmanuel, God is with us! Let us remember to take off our shoes, wherever we are, whatever we're doing, because we are on holy ground and our loving Father is with us in the eternal now. This is how we pray unceasingly and do everything in faith.
Beautiful souls 🩷
This is ,by far, the best video I have ever watched
As a stay at home, dad, the wiping away of the wet it paralleling the cleansing of our sin got me 😭 🙌❤️🔥 to take it further, you can even relate that to the priestly sacrificial system. Jesus will be praise weather I am cleaning dishes, a diaper, or spilled milk.
I'd love to see how worship through song comes into play with intimacy. For me I find I transcend to a blissful paradise through sweet song to the lord in addition to prayer through song. I haven't heard it mentioned yet but I think that is one portal to paradise for those who have the gift!
This was so beautiful and helpful. I sincerely appreciate the humility and honesty of this conversation. Thank you!
Wow, when she said not wanting to because God with changer her heart.
I so feel that way about praying for my mother. Over and over she abandoned me. Now, I’m the one need to be there for her and I don’t want to.
What a blessing! So encouraged in my prayer walk! Thank you, Tyler, John Mark, Tim, Christine, and Pete! Amazing!
This was so inspiring! Love all the different ways everyone brings. I hope you keep doing these. Loving the book!
Thank you all so much for sharing your thoughts! I love the depth of sincerity! Really loved Pete Greig about the brain! Always praying for Jesus to move in different parts of my brain and ask Him a lot about how I can, "put on the mind" of Christ! Also, love Tim Mackie' s thoughts about subjectivity. Thank you so much! Christine Caine, love the honesty about on the move and prayers for others!
This is the body of Christ that I want to be built in with! Blessings!
I love the totally different perspectives. Not one is wrong - we all have a way to access God. He's right with us instantly. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Enriching discussion. Thank you for your vulnerability and insight. I agree…more of this group, please.
Thank you for this compilation-an answer to prayer. ❤
So I thought I was pretty smart and spiritually mature until I watched these Christian intellectuals talk😂. I can appreciate the growth my mind had to take just to understand the vocabulary 😮. At the end I realized that we are all different, have different relationships with God and maturity levels. I love Christine and her transparency ❤. I can relate to her best, but hearing all these other men speak of their prayer journeys was motivating and humbling and reassuring as well. I love the diversity of the Body.😊
Unceasing prayer is something central in the lives of Eastern Orthodox Christians - not just monastics but laity as well. There's an ancient tradition there going back to the earliest days of the Church that is well worth digging into. "The Jesus Prayer" by Kallistos Ware would be a solid intro for anyone who's curious.
The Jesus prayer is vain repetition. It should be a last resort for someone under demonic attack. One is better off reading, memorizing, meditating on the psalter. Eastern Orthodoxy has a lot of useless tradition and bad habits from backsliding pagans. The early church "fathers" are worshiped and because they are "first" but being the first they are also coming from heavily pagan roots. This is obvious in how they cling to their idolatry and fake saints they worship. It is rebranded catholicism and the schism was fake.
@@br.m This feels like one of those “tell me you don’t understand Orthodoxy without telling me you don’t understand Orthodoxy” kind of moments.
@@feeble_stirrings Really? If I had more time I might help you understand Eastern Orthodoxy.
I loved this. Thank you 🙏.
Thank you for this candid talk!
❤❤❤ More of these, please. Excellent conversation. Thank you!
Amazing, inspirational, helpful, thank you all 👏👍
So grateful for this. Thank you.
This was amazing…thank you so much!
This was so real and unreal. Thank you!
This was a blessing. Thank you
I love the honest humility regarding the state of their hearts towards the end.
This was beautiful. Thank you Tyler for bringing this group together. It is so valuable to have everyone involved speaking over us and telling us it’s ok to connect with Gd in a personal and unique way. And it’s even better to learn what that looks for yourself Gd, now and in future seasons.
Such a gift! Thank you for sharing this conversation.
Brutal Honesty:( not hiding behind any mask living real life in the reality of Christ in their life… Thank you
This is so insightful. Thank you for this.
Its good to come together and talk about what we love the most, God!
This is beautiful! I want this in my mornings. I need consistency.
Thank you all for your transparency and authenticity. I appreciate your sharing here .
Love love love this! Maybe my favorite part was toward the end… When Tim Mackie was talking about hearing from God. Yep, Tim. You’re way smarter than me, but this one I know … I call it being a “ first class noticer “… that’s no coincidence. When we become first class noticers , there’s no denying God’s handprint !
Thankyou so much for what you share here! It truly blessed me💛
This was really helpful, thank you
So helpful! Bless you guys abundantly brothers and sisters!!!!! Love from a brother in Cape Town
Excellent format, challenging and informative. More please.
This was great, thankyou.
Just listening to the first answer Tim made, makes me remember how much life I received listening to their deep revelations on bible project it felt like experiencing new rivers of fresh living water
So encouraging, thank you!
Thank you all for sharing so honestly, humbly, vulnerably and transparently.
Appreciate it! ❤👏🏼👍🏼
That was a beautiful prayer - thank you 🙏
Loved this conversation, thank you Tyler! I’m excited to follow your channel, been looking for more content like this.
This discussion is so helpful and clarifying for my own prayer life. Thanks so much!
This was honestly amazing. Really enjoyed it. Many takeaways to apply. Thank you for the podcast, as well as this roundtable.
