2020 Chevy Colorado Z71 | GM Steering Column & Ignition Lock -Key Won't Turn & Steering Wheel Locked

Today I inadvertently found a way to lock my steering column & ignition cylinder on my 2020 Chevy Colorado Z71.
If you can't turn the key in your 2nd gen (starting in 2015) Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon and your steering wheel is locked in either direction, you may be facing the same issue. Stay tuned to see how to unlock your ignition and steering wheel!
This may work on other GM models, and maybe even some other brands as well. Let me know in the comments so we can add some tags to this video to help others out!

I have a 2016 Colorado, been dealing with this for a while now. You can also free the key by moving the gear stick from park all the way to reverse and back to park. Sometime I’ll tap the break and you’ll hear the safety switch unlock, sometimes that’s an easy way as well. When it happens to me I basically run through those 3 things. 1 park to reverse and back to park. 2. Tap the break peddle and turn the wheel. 3 turn the wheel.

I knew the steering column could lock, but I had just never encountered an ignition that also locked with the wheel.

What do you do if you have a push button start with the same issue? Do you push the button at the same time as turning the steering wheel? (Have a 2015 Yukon XL Denali)

Hmm that’s a good question… I’m not entirely sure, but that may work with a push button.
You should also see where the backup ignition is (if there is one). (Your key fob has a detachable mini-key inside of it) If there is a backup keyed ignition, you may be able to use the key method also.
