I bought a 1.4 trophy in the summer, I only wanted something cheap to get me to work and back. For £380, I’ve spent £25 for a new radiator, £45 for a new starter and it’s the most fun I’ve had to drive since my corolla 1.6 twin cam... Saying that, it had around 75000 miles so very low mileage for car of it’s age and it does me for 300 miles a week, so it saves me a large payout when my new motor is up at the end of its finance agreement

No disrespect to the owner or Jamie but none of them have any clue what they’re talking about. They really don’t know the cars. Firstly it’s not a 160bhp version from factory, they didn’t have heated seats, they have a choice of 3 different gearboxes and the 160bhp didn’t come with the short ratio box (might be wrong on that) and you definitely get a lot more than 25mpg out of them. They also don’t all have a magnex exhaust, it’s janspeed or xpower. They are also very costly to insure.

nice to see one of these again, i replaced my nova sr with a zr 105+ may years ago, that then ended up being built as a high compression forged 1.8 on vvc head with jenvey throttle bodies and piper 285cams made a tad over 190bhp and was great fun. My only gripe with them was the seating position was awful felt like you were sat on them and not in them if ya get me. Land rover mls headgasket is a must as you say. My old one had a blueflame system on it that sounded fantastic coupled with the janspeed 4-2-1 manifold and decat. £450 payed for my ZR+ last weekend. 100k miles, head gasket done ,similar to this one. bit better sun roof condition,, great fun , great sounding exhaust but addictive hammering through 2nd and 3rd gear, so really you can drink the fuel.
Im getting Brembo disk and pads fitted next weekend for £200 for all four corners. so not too pricey for brakes
My head gasket was done at 80k miles. As the video says these cars do suffer with paint lacquer peel. especially in THE Colour red , on the roof and spoiler.
Another thing to note is just the general build quality. given that its at 20 year old car nearly. there is quite a few cheap sounding rattles in the cabin.
contrary to popular belief these cars do not like being raced around. the engines really don't been driven like a rally car because of the reliability issues.
if you get hold of a good one for under £500 its worth it. as if its in good condition it will be worth more in parts.
Edit, pretty sure this isnt a turbo, but the 1.8 twin cam 120bhp

I would have another one in a heartbeat except for the fact that it’s hard to find a decent one these days for less than £2500-£3000 which is mad because for not much more you can get a slightly ropey ep3 which will probably be more reliable and more fun.

So much shite info it’s laughable. This is a 120+, not a 160.
There was no such thing as a 160+, the 160 came with all of the good stuff as standard.
The ‘+’ gave you a leather steering wheel, front fogs, electric windows & mirrors, seat height and lumbar adjustment and the electric sunroof.
The wheels and skirts were options regardless of if it was a ‘+’ or not. This particular car has the poverty spec Matrix seats, the better seats were the Monacos.
Head gaskets aren’t quite as bad as they are made out to be, they are easy to fix and only need doing once. Leaking sunroofs can be fixed without buying new glass. Body rust is the worst issue to fix on these cars.
They handle very well and have always given a great performance per price ratio. As well as being a lot of fun.

Yeah - they do handler well. B roads are definitely where they shine. The 160 sin;t great around town. Gearbox can feel a bit baulky, not that easy to drive smoothly below 30mph. But that gearbox feels great when you are hassling the car. I love the steering as it feels direct, (turning circle of a barge mind you) and the throttle is very responsive when you step on it. It's a car that thrives on high revs - just don;t do it before the engine has warmed up!

Was unfortunate because the owner at the time actually had it booked in to have the belt replaced it just went before he got it to the garage. That included uprated mls head gasket and everything to bulletproof the engine. Just a shame the head that was purchased was faulty.
