Can I ask how you store all these cars? 😂
I watch a lot of CZcams videos (Number27, Harry's Garage, Tyrells Classics etc ) as do most I guess. Not easy to stand out doing yet another car video, but I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your presenting and the obvious hours of research you do to create them. Thank you and well done.
Cheapest one of these I got was 280 pound but head gasket was buggered made a good bit on parting it out tho
The mid 2000’s, a golden era of motoring. Where cars were modern enough to be safe and reliable, but still fun to drive in a wonderfully mechanical way and still offered in an array of interesting engines! Looking forward to seeing this sorted James 👍
I completely agree.
In my opinion that was the 90's. In the 90s almost all the cars had fuel injection which was evolved to perfection and made engine perform better but also made them easier on gas, luxury amenities that became normal like AC, electric windows, cruise control these hardly failed and if it failed it was easy and not that expensive to fix aswell as the suspension which was well balanced and made cars handle very solid.
The early to mid 2000's was a time when the car manufacturers wanted to implement new technologies into cars. But the new technologies weren't developed to be working flawless. Think of BMW's iDrive and SMG, Renault Velsatis, Avantime and Laguna MK2, VW Pheaton and Touareg, Mercedes Sclass W220 and Eclass W211.
This MG ZS was still being built in 2005 but developed in the 90's. It had the underpinnings of a 92 Civic EG/Integra and a MG/Rover engine also from the 90's.
I remember walking around a car supermarket in the early 00's with my Dad (I was only about 7 or 8) and I saw a few of these and fell in love. Even at that age, I could tell that the build quality was questionable, but it didn't matter because it passed the "cool" test
Completely agree. although I couldn't care less about the safety part.
But fuel injection was good, not like early version with a lot of small annoying things. The equipment was exactly what i want in a car. AC, electric windows, cruise control and nothing that really ratteld in the car. Not a million beeps, stupid assist things or a car that tries to steer you in to the barrier cause it thinks it knows better. When you switch something of it is actually of and that manual gearbox was just that, manual
No of todays petrol cars interest me a bit. EVs are interesting if you only could get just a car and not a touch thing that driving comes as a bi product
100% this!
Now for me personally, this is the kind of project I like to see on your channel. As nice as the Ferrari’s are, the running costs are just too prohibitive for me to enjoy the (excellent, it must be said) films you make on them! Something rare, and achievable for the man in the street/road/culdisac to potentially own and more importantly, repair on a Sunday morning makes this a must see on Jayem!!!😊
Thanks chaps!
@@JayEmmOnCars new prius is out , unfortunatly they sold out to the kind of people who like big wheels on their car... i thought thats what the corrolla suv hybrids were for! maybe a lexus ct based on prius would do something like transverse inline 6 with 2 kei car inline 3 combined, powering 2 elecric motors at rear , a clutch pedal to charge up the battery for full power immediately released.
and a brake power ditrbution switch, to slide the rear end out or switch to 50/50 distrubution to slow the whole car . maybe all wheel drive option. maybe a gr prius i3 or flat 4 . maybe a ev.
If costs you £2500 to fix so 3k all in and is worth only 2k, you’ve managed to saved a car you love for the cost of a set of rubber for one Ferrari.. that seems like great value to me 👏 I’ve long wanted to get a MK2 MR2 for similar reasons. Looking forward to seeing what the Detailing Doctor makes of it.
Yep that's my logic!
I always preferred the ‘prettier’ mk1, but this looks great. More of these need to be kept going. They are a true modern classic: great fun to drive, v6, good looking, a marque with proper history.
First time I've ever seen one - on camera at least it reminds me more of a Nissan Primera than a Subaru Impreza - with a bit of Mitsubishi Galant in the rear.
Glad you've bought one. Far more interesting than exotic stuff most can't afford.
Your channel gets better and better.
It shouldn't cost anywhere near as much as you think to get most of the bits you mentioned sorted, there are loads of bits for them in scrap yards. Door cards, roof lining, clock, etc are all easy to get hold of for cheap and just fit yourself. It's also the most common colour for them, so you might even be able to find replacement wings, rear bumper and so on in the same colour you need. Again, easy stuff to fit by yourself.
I'm really excited to see how the ZS turns out. There's something really satisfying about seeing a budget car getting the love it deserves to return it to top form. Great stuff, James. #doingcarownershipproperly 🙂
This purchase has excited me far more than any Ferrari or Lamborghini that we frequently see on CZcams. I can't wait to see this get some love, be enjoyed and have some time to shine. Wonderful Jay!
Good job disguising that Evo in the thumbnail, can’t wait to watch this one.
hihi
I’m looking at either a ZR160 or ZS180 as my first “project car”/ “fun car”. I joined the MG Car Club last week at the NEC and can confirm they are a great community. I can’t wait to own my own once I find the right one- which is becoming increasingly more difficult! Looking forward to seeing how this progresses
This was definitely on the cards after the MG series! Great colour!
I'm addicted to the KV6 engine and bad panel gaps. Wonderful cars all of them! Had ZRs/25s and ZTs but those gills on the wings are getting me tempted!
Nice purchase James, love this type of story, any car saved in this day and age is a big thumbs up from me. Just sold my old Passat B4 1.9 TD and regretted it as it was pulling away from my house. Keep up the good work 👍
I think too many people see the "price" of things but don't know the "value".... which, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. May not just your eye enjoy what it beheld. Be well!
I think the Rovers and MGs should be saved more, they made some good cars and yes, they had a lot of flaws but they are not around anymore and the more cars that are on the road, the better the reminder will be for many years to come rather than a forgotten marque. I rather the Qashqais and whatever else SUV crossover things go to scrapie’s instead. Glad you are putting money into fixing this one up as like you say, many would give up on it.
These cars are brilliant, sad they're now so rare, glad you're saving it. That V6 is epic sounding
I love when you post older cars like this - can't wait to see it come right again.
A real car that real people can relate to👍👍
These videos of affordable cars are great. I hope we see more like this - it’s the main reason I subscribe to your channel. Love your enthusiasm for these cheap cars.
IIRC reviews of the period said that the ZS was the sweet spot in the MG range.- enough power to move it reasonably swiftly (where the ZR fell short) whilst having reasonably sharp handling for its time (where the ZT fell short).
I didn't realise your red ZR was so long ago - I've been subscribed to you for far longer than I thought!
What a great little nugget
And I appreciate your approach to cars in many ways, more people should care like that.
"If I dont save the poor thing, who will?" and stuff
I completely agree about the memories meaning more than what the car is. I just took part in a charity banger rally. I bought a 2005 nissan almera for £500. It's nothing special car wise but it's what it did that made it so special. I drove it through Europe completing challenges to raise money for the local hospice that cared for my Grandad when he lost his battle against cancer.
It was my first ever time abroad and I conquered my fear of dressing up in fancy dress because of that almera. It started misfiring in Spain so had to retire but limped it home because I couldn't bear to scrap it.
Because of those memories I can't scrap it, I have to save it and I'm struggling to find the money to do it (probably cost about £500 to get it back on the road) but I'm determined to save ìt. It's not just an old banger. It raised over £1600 for charity and helped me achieve a dream I thought would never happen so I desperately want to save it.
Glad you bought one, James! I guessed the car as soon as I saw the thumbnail. Restore it nicely and sympathetically and it you'll end up getting more than your money back in a couple of years. Looking forward to seeing some more content on this.
Can’t wait to get stuck right into this piece of British nostalgic future classic ❤
Deserves a full restoration. I said it before on a previous video, my 8v integrale back in the early 90's with a leaking boost hose (still quick) was out paced by a new one of these. Sounds brilliant too. As you said it looks surprisingly modern still, which is weird as when they were new I always looked at them as tarted up old car.
YES - so chuffed you've got one of these again. I'm almost as jealous as I am about the Ferraris...
Fantastic video, James. I am so pleased you've got on-board with these.
Heh...bought my Mk 1 for £650 when they were going for peanuts at the beginning of lockdown, spent about £2k on it (belts, clutch, welding etc) and now they're selling for...£2500-ish. Even though it's got a leak in the cam carrier seal, and a coolant leak, and needs an interior cosmetic refresh...I'm not letting go of it for anything. Definitely my favourite car yet.
Do yourself a favour - FullDip the wheels, cost about £60-70 and it's pretty durable. Pull the fabric off the door cards, sand them down and either spray them or wrap them (probably about £30 in rattle cans). Plenty of bumpers kicking around on eBay for £50-odd, and most are in this colour (it's the most popular). The SRS warning light is blindingly simple to fix - there's a connector under the driver's seat, just pull it and clean it with Servisol. Reconnect, and the problem's disappeared (disconnect the battery while doing that if you're of a nervous disposition).
I've owned 2 of the Honda MB6 civics that shared a chassis with the ZS, they where great cars, came with the B18C4 engine with 170bhp. One of the most common mods was to fit the thicker rear anti roll bar from the MG ZS. If you are considering another ZS perhaps you should consider an MB6 too! Great video! Will definitely be keeping an eye out for your ZS on the channel
Honda mb6 , aka 1.8 vti probably the best car I have ever owned unbelievably well built and had detuned same engine afaik as the Integra type r. I too have had two of these 10 years apart. I drove both of those cars very hard, nothing ever went wrong with either of them just standard servicing. Whereas my ATR just ate clutches and gearboxes as standard box and clutch not fit for purpose..mb6 fantastic car !
Brilliant video 👏🏼 Great to see these cars getting recognition now. I own a MK1 120 ZS & it’s a cracking car. Worthwhile project which I’m sure many are looking forward to seeing progress
Looking forward to this video series. Keep up the good work.
Amazingly as soon as I saw the thumbnail I guessed it would be an MG, not because I'm a smarty pants bit because the synapses reconnected and I remembered the first video of yours I ever saw was that very MG vid!
Many years later I rediscovered your channel and it never clicked that was you until today!
This feels like your channel has come full circle and I echo your sentiment for the MG. Congrats on the channel can't wait to see what comes next with this motor.
Absolutely love the ZS 180.
Very fond memories, my dad had a pre facelift 03. Sure it was monogram the colour, it was a beautiful car.
Despite its flaws, water in the spoiler, gear knob coming off in your hand when selecting reverse, and generally poor build quality, the noise it made was beautiful.
Can’t wait to see what you do with this one, new subscriber here 👍😁
A really well put together video, and a great project, and let's be honest, everyone loves a project car. Sometimes the cost of fixing up a car isn't a part of the equation, it's simply something you just have to do, automotive passion.
This gets me excited for when I'll be able to own a car for the first time. Thanks a lot Jayemm!
Good stretch of road you took it down at the end there, many fond memories of thrashing my little 1.4 Corsa shortly after I passed my test keeping up with a 911 on a leisurely cruise.
Awesome! Always appreciate people preserving unloved models :)
Nice. I'm very much looking forward to seeing this when it's all sorted.
Definitely something very appealing about these, even as someone who's not generally bothered about Rover/MG stuff. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
Your old MG video brought me to your Channel. Enjoying your Content ever since. Nice to see you got another one 👍
Mate. YOU are the reason these cars are creeping up in value.... and the reason I want one. Lol. 😉. Have had a couple of of ZT's, and now on my 5th 75. .. keep up the good work and thanks for keeping these classic, bargain British cars 'alive'. 🇬🇧
Thanks Paul :)
Thanks J, good to hear that V6 again, & yes, a long time since your last one! 🙏🙏
Good Luck and look forward too seeing it finished.
Really looking forward to seeing a detailed project series on this car James, having recently bought a ZS 180 myself!
They Corner so nicely, have to drive one to understand. I've only driven the 120. 180 for sale on Auto trader for £3999 and an engine issue version on ebay for £1500, well done on you purchase James 👍
Love it when your giving it the beans and the artic in front is pulling away 🤣
Seriously though it does need saving, part of our British motoring heritage. Good man 👏
These are brilliant, great to see another one on the channel
I feel like this about my old Corolla. It isn't that special but it's a manual. With that being a thing of the past soon. The car feels special to me.
Congratulations on your latest acquistion , this is a gem of a model...i am currently restoring a 1995 bmw e36 328i 5 speed manual....i can relate to your comment on bargain motoring....love from malaysia
Nice! Don’t leave it too long until we see it again 😊
Well done James, you summed it up perfectly and glad your mixing your content. You Tube has done a lot for saving these cars of the unexceptional and exceptional in your case. I fully get why these videos get more views than expensive modern over complicated cars. I look forward to seeing you enjoy it with us viewers when it's finished. I had an MGZTT estate which was and is one my favourite cars having owned new BMW & Mercedes since it still holds memories that the German cars never did..strange🤔
I guess your ZT-T certainly had character, something that the subsequent German motors you had lacked. 👍
@@jammy_rex3038 Yes it's hard to put your finger on. The Alfa 159 Sports wagon was the one that has the most "it's a part of me" it's not handling or performance which did not match the equivalent BMW which I moved to and absolutely hated. But even then I would take the MG ZTT over a BMW design that was 10 years newer.
I really do see the appeal and what a great project car. Looking forward to seeing the updates.
Absolutely love bangernomics! We scrapped our trusty old 2004 Xsara Picasso this year, after 9 years of bargain motoring - it hurt a lot, and I regret not laying her up for restoration :(
Congrats on the purchase! Best of luck with it!
£425 for a rare V6 and a piece of British car manufacturing history? Sounds like a proper bargain and you're quite obviously a big fan of these cars so I'm sure the seller was glad it was going to a caring, good home. Plus it gets to live on here on your very cool channel! Sounds very tasty too!
Doesn't it just? Perfect noise for this car
Oh and thumbs up for DMGRS - good company and I've used some of their K series bits for my Elise.
Scott's fabulous
Loving your car selections for reviews 👌 Great buy to! I appreciate the MG / Rover
I still pine after a Rover Coupe facelift, i had a ZS Hatch diesel and it handled amazingly, loved the facelift version too. Actually looking forward to seeing what you do with this.
I was behind one of these on my way home from work today, not seen one for ages. A mate had one in the same colour a few years ago (I'll send him a link to this video). I prefer the look of the pre face-lift cars to be honest. Look forward to seeing it restored...and with the MG badges back on :)
Thanks for keeping this car as a future classic yes they are fun to drive
All the old Z series MG’s must surely be appreciating money wise.
loved my ZR back in the day..great upload, subbed
That's a rather Cool project great work James! It makes very much reminiscent of my own mk2 45
Bought a lovely 52,000 mile example 6 years ago for £450, ran it for 3 years and then got my money back. Was a great little car. SRS light is likely the underseat wiring and the Check Engine almost certainly one of the O2 sensors. Both common faults. Atlas Sportgreen Tyres work really well on the ZS180 for a budget tyre.
Good luck with the project, I had the MGZTT 2.5v6 fantastic car still miss it to this day plus even the wife misses the car. I found that the kv6 biggest downside to future proofing is the upper inlet manifold NO one is making a fix for the inlet rattle of death ( which WILL happen, it is when the plastic internals come apart. There is no fix apart from gutting them out or replacing with a used good working one.). if you can use your influence to get that sorted it should help to keep these engine cars on the road. Make sure you put in the uprated vis motors, the uprated metal thermostat and the uprated stainless steel lower coolant rail.
Great purchase that Jay! I love all your Mg/Rover videos. Id love for you too review a Rover sd1 manual v8 at some point, I would lend you mine but its a few years from being back on road at this point I'm afraid. Keep up the good work dude!
Great project idea Jay...really interested to see how this will play out (from a 90s Ford guy)
Looks like a good buy. I bought my Mk3 Mondeo ST220 estate for many of the same reasons. I paid over four times as much but there's nothing seriously wrong with it and I plan to keep it as a future classic and as something to take to shows.
I'm barely reaching 25mpg but the V6 on acceleration is intoxicating 😂
Love it..can't wait to see update videos
Great little project James, well worth saving as we’re all going to wonder why we didn’t buy one when they’ve all gone. Eventually, you’ll (possibly, but don’t hold me to that) get your money back.. but that’s not the point is it?😂
Cool that you are saving this great little car. It would be great to see some of work being done similar to Harry's Jag and Lancia
Hi James. Love the channel, and I headed over to your merchandise section to look for a t-shirt. But I was underwhelmed. Please make some with a shouty design, like the emblem on you exit titles. I am happy to be a walking billboard for your channel, so be bold! 😊
Thanks Gary, I haven't done Merch properly in a while, but may reintroduce it next year
Your videos are always but great but this was your best yet. It would be great for us if, rather than not see the car for a year, you share regular updates on what is being done. We’d all love to learn and see the journey through restoration. A lovely car that many could own and do up so please share. And don’t stop doing content here or on Jayemm and friends.
Thanks Helen
The thing with updates is I don't really like doing them unless there is something substantial to say (that's why no S2000 update) - but the hope with this is another video in around Feb
Even though this car is not native to my country I will leave the video on so you don't think doing these videos are bad for the channel!
Keep up the great work and keep up the old car content!!!
Fantastic choice and content James 👌
The production quality of these videos is just excellent
That orginal red ZS was what got me subscribed to both Jayemm and Laurie.. both very different!
This in current state is prime LMM fodder, but its great that you're prepared to invest in its future.
Starting to make me hanker after a zs or ztt now.
Do it!
😆 knew you wouldn't resist after seeing the last vid lol..... They are great daily runners 👍I do have to laugh tho - for a man who owns a Ferrari, you say you're "worried" about the amount of money you might have to put in to it.... you could probably do a nut and bolt rebuild on the MG for the price of a set of tyres for the Italian Stallion 😆
BTW - the SRS light is almost certain to be the yellow multiplug for the seatbelt pretensioner under the drivers seat is loose/making a bad contact 😉
Well done. I have 2 Mk 1 180s. A BRG hatch i have owned since 2006 and Mono Saloon i have had 4 years. Well worth restoring and saving
People Bang on about Alpha and peugeot Citoen etc V6 's But that sounds lovely Jay.. now once its sorted . you must get a ZTT .. And of course the Mustang engined ZT.. Great video as always.
Enjoying the videos on your channel well done ✔️✔️
I am a viewer from the United States.
I moved here from Germany to work for a pharmaceutical company which was acquired by the company I worked for in Germany.
My father and grandfather were engineers for Opel and my mother's family still own several Opel dealerships in Bavaria and Thuringia.
In in United States Opel's have practically no enthusiast following except for the GT and Manta.
Although I own both of GT and a Manta I also own one model from every model year from 19 58 to 1975.
From majority of my collection I have spent far more than they are worth to get them to the standard that I want them.
Their monetary worth is secondary because I enjoy the process of restoring them and I am creating memories with my family about restoring them and driving them.
Sounds great! Great colour too! Cheers!
Well I’m with you on viewing “ lessor mortal” cars with affection; I am also luckily enough to have McLaren, Ferrari and Lotus in the garage but will often grab my sons Skoda Citigo just so I can thrash the nuts off it and not be worried I’ll be doing 90mph past a school.
These cars are all part of our combined history and deserve to be kept on the street. Much like 1970’s are defined as Spitfire’s and MGB’s, the 1980’s by XR2’s, 205Gti’s and the 90’s and noughties by Impreza, M3’s and R34 GTR’s, quirky cars like Suzuki Swift, Hairy Arsed TVR’s and minor exotics like Alpine 610 all form part of our motoring heritage.
Lol u had me with the thumbnail.. i was expecting an EVO 6
I've always loved the MGs - especially the Z cars and TFs. Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out. Might give my son an idea of what he'll face if he swaps his current car for one!
I had an 03 ZS 120 saloon, same colour but with the lower rear spoiler. I bought it for an incredible price and it was almost mint. Always had the worry of the K series going Pop! but loved it. Only sold as due to my Wife passing her test and the cost of adding her to the insurance was ridiculous.
I'm excited to see where this goes. Would love to own one of these!
I love these cars, its such a shame they are just undervalued and unloved! There is one currently in my local scrapyard (as well as a ZR & ZT-T) and its such a shame, people need to wake up to these awesome cars!
To be fair they are undervalued because MG doesn't have a particularly good reputation for reliability, and although the ZS isn't too bad, it does still have frustratingly stupid flaws.
An English teacher back at my secondary school (around the time these were new) absolutely skinted himself to buy the V8 engined ZT.
What a guy, and what a car.
Other noteworthy mentions my science teacher had an 850i M-Power and a Hillman Imp that he took historic rallying and circuit racing too.
Well done James its a shame there isn't a multiple "like" button. Great to see another CZcamsr who can see through all the dross written about MG/Rover Group.
This is such a much more interesting car and in keeping with the type of channel this is as opposed to showing off heavily financed Ferraris.
A blue MK2 ZS180 for under £500?! How rusty is it then 😂.
Great to see another MG on the channel though can’t wait to see what you do with it
Totally get your point. I am always thinking how it would be to buy a 1991 Opel Kadett GSI 16v. Was my 2nd car, so many good memories and it was a blast in those days
Great car James, I had a feeling it would be a MG after all your recent MG content.
Tiff Needell spanked one of these round a circuit and proclaimed it to be one of the best handling front wheel drive chassis he’d ever experienced.
I had the chance to save one a few years ago. It was a runner, but had been sitting for five years completely untouched outside. Even putting 4 good tyres on it, replacing all the brakes and the blowing exhaust would’ve taken the investment to about what the finished car would’ve been worth. That was without the timing belt and water pump that needed doing, the leaking radiator that needed replacing, and the general recommissioning that any car that’s been untouched for five years needs. In the end it went for spares to keep another one alive.
That's the thing once they need more spending on than buying a decent example in the first place then most people aren't going to bother which is a shame.
I don't think you'll find Rover was ever under Honda ownership; they merely had 20% interest which they sold along with BA's 80% to BMW in 1994.
I bought a late 95 N reg 214Sei R8 from my dads friend back in 99,one of the best cars I've ever owned..it was stunning in nightfire red and served me well until 2005 ish when tinworm got the better of it...scrapped at 85k miles with it's factory head gasket still intact..they were Good cars.
The SEi was a very nice edition in terms of spec. Never really heard the head gaskets being an issue with R8s, certainly the earlier ones... I think cost cutting of the gasket quality etc in subsequent models led to many of those issues and the slide in reputation.
I remember these, albeit quite vaguely. Not a bad looker and fairly decent in terms of both performance and practicality, sounds ok too.
